As with people the inevitability of getting older also happens to dogs even though we do not want it to or believe it. Even though dogs get into their senior years and start to slow down it's important and even more so that their quality of life doesn't change, exercise is extremely important to keep in good shape and healthy for longer. We can also do some other things to help them age in grace and comfort.
Dietary: There are many ways you can help your dog's age in good health through a good diet and recognising what foods and diet will benefit them. Many dogs are overweight and this will have a negative impact on their joints and ability to exercise effectively to keep them fit and healthy, the first priority should always be to get your dog to their correct weight.
We are strong believers in raw feeding for dogs (done correctly), this doesn't mean just feeding them raw meat but giving your dog the full range of vitamins and nutrients they need to be healthy. This can come in the form of an expert pre-mixed food or DIY is possible if you have done extensive research and are 100% sure you can provide your dog's full dietary needs. Providing healthy treats that are either low in fat or support healthy joints and muscles are also a great way to give your dog a tasty snack for being good and promoting good health. Even if you do not feed raw giving your dog the best quality food available will ensure they are getting a full and balanced diet.
Supplements such as apple cider vinegar and turmeric can aid a dogs health through their entire life and provide joint and intestinal support to name but a few benefits.
Exercise: A dog getting outdoors is good for both you and your dog's health. If your dog has health issues always check with your vets if you plan to change their exercise regime but generally getting out to explore new places and having at least 1 hour of exercise per day plus some active exercise to get their heart pumping should be the minimum. Above all have fun with your dog and keep their body and mind healthy.
Comfort at home: You can make a few changes to help keep your dog comfortable at home, helping them with steps up to the sofa or your bed and providing them with a comfortable dog bed that will support their joints and muscles such as an orthopaedic dog bed. This will go towards ensuring their ageing bodies are well cared for and will ease any discomfort from a standard bed.
Comfort outdoors: Dressing your dog up used to mean just putting on a Halloween costume or dog Christmas jumper, but there is also a functional and practical side to adding a layer of clothing for dogs to prevent them getting cold, wet and uncomfortable. Many shorter-haired breeds, senior dogs, puppies and dogs with medical conditions will benefit from the added layer of a dog jumper or coat and will help keep them warm on cold and wet days. As we know cold weather can make our joints ache more than usual and keeping our dogs warm and comfortable whilst outside is our responsibility as loving dog owners.
A nice pampering massage session: Our dogs love us immeasurably so dedicating a little time to give them an extra special pampering session is the least we can do for them, whether it is just 100% focus on showing them how much we love them or giving their bodies a gentle massage, they will be sure to lap up the attention.
Grooming: Keeping your dog well groomed at any age is important but especially important when a dog is getting older, keeping your dog's claws trimmed is important. Why is it important to keep your dog's nails trimmed? Long claws are more prone to chipping, tearing, splitting and breaking, which can be very painful and may require veterinary treatment. As well as being prone to damage, when a dog stands or walks on a long-clawed paw it puts pressure on the wrong parts of the foot, causing pain and discomfort.
To try and minimise this pain your dog may move slightly differently, which in turn may make them more susceptible to other joint injuries, particularly in older dogs where posture may already be a problem. In extreme cases, the nails can grow so long that they curl over and dig into the pad of their paws.
Also providing them with another chance of some TLC is making part of the nail trimming session a luxury spa experience with some beautiful scents and a luxury dog shampoo and conditioner to keep their skin and fur in the best condition.
Dental health for a dog at any age is important, replacing any human snacks that contain sugars or ingredients that will harm their dental health with high-quality dog treats and chews will help keep their teeth in the best possible condition for longer. Antler chews for dogs or raw meaty bones (not cooked bones) are great mental stimulation for dogs and as they chew and gnaw, plaque is scraped away from the teeth helping to keep them clean.
We hope some of this information has been helpful and if you do any of the above or have any suggestions we would love to hear in the comments below!
Molly Barker is an Australian dog accessory brand that brings a range of elegant dog accessories which have style, comfort and function for you and your dog.
Founder and Director, Angela Infantino talks to us about her journey and inspirations for Molly Barker, of course, the beautiful Great Dane x Labrador Molly herself.
Can you tell us about the Molly Barker Team?
I’m really lucky to have an amazing and dedicated team of individuals who truly care about our label and producing the best products. They won’t present anything unless they are bouncing off the walls with excitement, because we don’t want to just produce great pieces, we want to give our customers a wonderful experience every day. Whether it be comfort when they grip our dog leads or have a friend comment on how beautifully coordinated their dog bed looks in their living room. Each team member brings so much pride to their work and it shows in the finished product.
We are also a group of crazy dog lovers. We laugh about how often we’ve forgotten a person's name but remembered their dog’s name. A day doesn’t go by when there isn’t at least one dog in the office, so the vibe is always fun and light-hearted.
Is Molly your influence for your designs and chief tester of your products?
Absolutely! Many of the design features in our products came about due to the challenges I had with Molly or other products. Molly used to suffer from very sensitive and itchy skin. So our grooming range is made from natural and organic ingredients to hydrate and heal the skin with every wash.
She also has anxiety. On bad days she would pull on her lead so much that my hand would be sore from gripping her dog lead. So our decision to use real Italian leather in our Sasha Collection just made sense from a comfort perspective for both the dog and owner. It’s also more durable and environmentally friendly which is really important to us.
How important is it to you to create well-made products?
It’s extremely important. Prior to creating Molly Barker, I can’t tell you how many dog collars and leads I’d thrown out after just a few months because they broke or wore so quickly they just looked horrible. And some of the things I purchased were really expensive. Don’t even get me started on the toys…some didn’t even last a full minute! It’s such a waste of money not to mention the impact that type of waste has on the environment. Our products may be a little higher in price to start with, but they last so much longer which makes them better value for money in the long run.
Our decision to have our products made locally in Australia also means we have more control over the quality. Supporting local business was also really important to us.
What was your first product in your collection?
The Sasha collar and lead were designed simultaneously, which was quickly followed by the Sasha waste bag holder. It was important that our products made sense functionally and complimented each other.
Since starting Molly Barker have you seen any changes in the way people buy for their dogs?
I sure have. Our customers don’t buy from us out of necessity. They purchase our products with a deep sense of love for their dog and because they truly want them to have the best. The aesthetics of our products are also a huge factor. Purchasing products for their dog that matches their own fashion and interior decor really excites them. As we like to say…"leave ordinary for someone else”.
What is your favourite thing to do with Molly?
Taking her to our local dog beach. She just loves it! She starts fidgeting with excitement before we even turn into the car park. And once the lead is off, she’s gone! The smile on her face as she plays in the water and with all the other dogs’ just melts my heart.
How would you describe Molly Barker in three words? Style, function, love.
In today’s blog, we interview Dave Snow, Director of the innovative dog apparel and dog accessories brand Park Barkers.
We discuss the wonderful ways that their stunning collections come together and get an idea of the process behind making products that are not only good quality, functional and stylish but ethical too.
Can you tell us a bit about Park Barkers? Park Barkers is based in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia and seeks to do bring together considered design for the modern dog (and owner).
Functional essentials are reimagined with new fabrics, innovative details, ethical sourcing and a clean aesthetic. At Park Barkers, we work to minimise our impact on the world. This includes taking a cruelty-free approach to our design, materials and manufacturing. We use vegan-leather options that are durable and easy to clean.
Another aspect of our ethical sourcing includes an investigation of ideas of recycling. From recycled rubbers and plastics in our polyesters to our work with artists to reinvent discarded works, we explore the different dimensions and expressions of recycling.
In support of the work independent charitable organisations make to the welfare and rights of animals, Park Barkers gives 5% of all sales to a nominated registered charity. This season, Park Barkers is proud to support Beagle Rescue Victoria.
Pictured above: Park Barkers Red Vegan Leather Hyde Dog Collar
What did you get the inspiration for your brand? The inspiration for the brand has drawn from so many places. From homewares and furniture to outerwear for humans. These have all been filtered with the lens of my personal commitment to the idea of cruelty-free living.
I have always found it difficult to reconcile my love of all animals with the use of animal products in the production of pet accessories. Looking at cruelty-free approaches it seems that there was always a compromise between ethical decisions and concerns about aesthetics.
It was all too often that products looked like a cliche. I found myself asking “why does it have to look so recycled”? With Park Barkers I wanted to build a collection of pieces that address my ethical concerns yet keep a modern, clean finish and functional detail.
Have there been any outside inspirations for your products? I love things that look so simple. So effortless in appearance yet, when you get closer, realise they took a lot of thought, effort and energy.
What is unique about Park Barkers products? I think the way in which we have fused a modern aesthetic to ethical sourcing and production is quite unique.
Our work with Grammy-nominated artist Sarah Larnach (for her work with musicians Ladyhawke and Passenger) stands alone in the way that it challenges notions of recycling. In the development of our Milford jacket print, I worked with Sarah to re-purpose discarded elements of her watercolour paintings as a yardage print that is full of colour, life and an abstract simplicity.
At the moment we are working on the next range and will continue this idea with another artist. In this respect, partnering with artists as a source of recycling is quite different from the ways most brands approach their prints.
Pictured above: Park Barkers Black Fitzroy Dog Lead
What was your first product at Park Barkers?
One of the first products that came to life was the Fitzroy collar. Now patented, this collar came about from my want to have a slide-release collar (usually webbing) that looked more like the traditional buckle collars.
I love the ease of a quick-release slide-release collar but hated all the extra buckles and sliders you need to make them adjustable. I wanted something clean, simple, functional and that would accommodate an uninterrupted band of whatever material I wanted to use. I loved the idea of a stylish strap of recycled rubber as a collar but needed to bring functionality to the idea.
This innovation, where the adjustment is concealed on the underside using hook and loop (“velcro”) made this possible. With some further tweaks and refinements, the Fitzroy collar was born.
If we really want to go back to where it first began, at age 7 I used to make board shorts for my Snoopy doll… I’m not sure this really counts, although it is a precursor to today where I have Park Barkers and make styles for my beagles Darwin and Clyde.
Are you involved with any charities? Park Barkers gives 5% of all sales to Beagle Rescue Victoria. We have adopted two beagles through them and are eternally grateful for the amazing work they do.
Pictured above: The lovely Darwin and Clyde
What is your favourite thing to do with your dog’s Darwin and Clyde? Saturday morning walks are always the best! We mix it up quite a bit, so sometimes it’s the beach, other times one of the many off-lead parks in Melbourne.
I’m just so into hanging out with my boys, I get a laugh from just watching them walk and seeing what they look at. Really, any time with these fellas is time well spent.
How would you describe Park Barkers in just three words? Considered. Modern. Ethical.
With our brands, we like to sample the products first to see if what they are advertising is really what our dogs and us will love and to make sure what you are buying is the best out there.
Yianni and Yoko are our chief testers and have to give their paw or in this case drooling approval for any treats that pass through our door and these fish dog treats definitely received top marks from the drool test! But the taste test was not the only reason we are so proud to be a stockist of these healthy dog treats. In our interview with the Goodwin family, you will see why.
Could you tell us about The GOODCHAP’S team? Goodchap’s is a family business run by father and son team, Mark and Liam Goodwin. With the help of illustrator Beth and product taster Ralph, we developed a range of dog-friendly gifts suitable for telling your best friend how much you appreciate them.
Can you tell us about your ingredients - where are they sourced and how are they made to make your delicious doggy treats? Here are Goodchap’s we believe in responsibly sourcing our products from within the UK and we strive to be wholly British, just like the English Bulldog!
We are based in Somerset and all of our lovingly created dog gifts are processed and packed within the county. Even Ralph our dog agrees British are best, and he’s Romanian! All of our sustainably sourced fishy dog treats are from established and trusted fish merchants in Britain.
At Goodchap's we dry our fish and don’t cook it, a more natural process that leaves the nutritional qualities intact. The only ingredients we use are fish and occasionally a little bit of potato, keeping our treats natural and healthy.
What would you say is or are the best chewy treat in your range? Our chewiest and longest lasting treats would have to be the Catfish Twirls and Whitefish Jerky. They are a great, healthy and natural alternative to rawhide and are made from 100% fish.
These dog treats are two of our treats tasters, Ralphs, favourites. He loves how they are long lasting, great tasting and chewy. He also loves how he can hold them between his paws for easy gnawing.
We at Aurora Pets love your dog treat packaging; can you tell us about it? We strive to be as eco-friendly as we can, whether that’s by sustainably sourcing our fish from established and trusted fish merchants or making sure none of our waste goes to landfill, we try to do our part.
We kept this in mind while we were developing our ranges of products and decided to go plastic free with our packaging. All of our dog treats are packaged in plastic-free, compostable and recyclable pouches coated in a naturally derived water-based coating.
Do you have a chief drool tester in your team for your products?
Yes, we do, our very own pooch, Ralph, is our Treat Taster; all of our treats have to receive the paws up from him before they go to market. Ralph came into our lives from Amicii dog rescue in 2017 and has been our inspiration ever since.
Can you tell us about the work you do with Amicii Dog Rescue? We adopted Ralph though Amicii and are currently taking care of a little foster pooch called Cookie, so we have close links with this particular charity. We wanted to give something back to Amicii for bringing so much joy to our lives, so we decided to create 3 products with the additional benefit of treating a dog in need.
Every time you treat your dog to a bag of Mr Fisher’s, Mrs Cook’s or Lil’ Scamp’s, we send treats to dogs in need at Amicii Dog Rescue, a UK based charity, which was established to support a dog rescue shelter in Transylvania, Western Romania.
The shelter cares for up to 200 dogs at any one time and is run by Asociatia Amicii Nostri, a registered NGO. To find out more about Amicii Dog Rescue please visit www.amiciidogrescue.org.uk
Where is Ralph’s favourite thing to do - except be the treat tester that is?
That’s a tough one; Ralph loves life and enjoys a lot of things. However, I would say that Ralph loves nothing better than chasing his tennis ball on a sandy beach. We take trips to Cornwall every year and never fail to take our fur family with us.
If you were to describe GOODCHAP'S in 3 words, what would they be? Eco-friendly, Healthy, Dog-lovers
We hope that you have enjoyed getting to know one of our brands at Aurora Pets! To check out their yummy fish dog treats please click here.
Welcome to our interview with our new dog treat brand The Innocent Hound! We are talking to Chloe the Managing Director who is going to give us the inside scoop of these delicious dog treats and the team behind them.
Could you tell us about The Innocent Hound team? We are lucky to have a fantastic team who are dedicated to making high-quality treats for our pets. Most of us are pet owners, so we all care about what we feed our animals, just like we would feed our children. There are 10 of us in the team which makes us more like a family, than just colleagues. Everyone is always happy to lend a hand across the factory – any excuse to put on a hairnet!
Are your treats suitable for raw fed dogs? Yes, The Innocent Hound treats are suitable for raw fed dogs, because of our unique drying process. We don’t rely on heat, instead, they are gently air-dried to retain their nutrients and flavour.
Could you tell us what you can (without giving away any trade secrets) how your dog treats are made? Our fantastic team make Innocent treats by hand, right here in our Yorkshire factory. We use a bespoke air – drying process to make the perfect semi-moist treats, keeping all of the key nutrients and delicious flavours in our products.
What can you tell us about your ingredients? We use sustainable, British meat that has been ethically sourced for our luxury treats. Our meat is either wild or from Red Tractor accredited farms, and our fish is from MSC accredited suppliers which are important to us.
What is the aim of your Innocent Hound brand? The aim of The Innocent Hound is to create quality, luxury treats that we know your hounds will adore. We use fresh ingredients to offer a range of sumptuous treats for spoiling, training and also to provide a treat with a difference. Our Functional range of sausages have all been designed to be more than just a treat, with ingredients to help maintain joint, skin and dental health.
Why did you choose to make your dog treat range grain free? The Innocent Pet treats are hypoallergenic; we don’t use grains in our products simply because they don’t need to be there. Many of our customers’ pets struggle with allergies and intolerances, so find that our single protein sausages are perfect for their sensitive tummies.
How do you test your treats? We have our Chief product tester and Head of quality control, always ready to lend a paw when it comes to testing new products! We have a great idea for which flavours our pets enjoy, so when we are looking at new recipes, both Bongo and Mash are first in the queue.
We also have a brilliant mix of pets in the team too who all have different palettes, so when we create something that gets all tails wagging, we know it’s perfect.
Now for the really hard question! What would you say are Mash and Bongo’s favourite treats to eat out of your range? It would have to be either venison and chopped apple sausages or venison slices…they’d probably go for sausages as they are bigger! They have a strong (but not unpleasant) smell which always helps when you want to keep their attention during training.
Where do Mash and Bongo enjoy going for their walks? Bongo and Mash have a number of favourite walkies spots! Being a lurcher and a greyhound mix, the boys love to really stretch their legs and zoom off into the distance. We live close to Wetherby race course so early morning runs on the track before a day in the office is one of their favourites.
Which 3 words would you choose to describe The Innocent Hound treats? Worth every penny.
Valentine ’s Day is one day of the year where love is celebrated - typically with your partner but we at Aurora Pets know that your human partner is not the only one that deserves another day of love! Even though every day of the year is a day to love your dog (and your partner), you don’t want them to feel left out and let’s face it, it is an occasion you can use to spoil them just that little bit more!
With our human partners, we traditionally give flowers, perfume, chocolates and cards with messages of love, so in our list of dog gift idea's, you will find the dog-friendly versions of these traditions along with other fun loveable dog presents for them to enjoy.
Some say that the way to people’s hearts is through their stomachs – well, in my opinion, this could not be a truer statement for our furry family members and what’s the ideal alternative to chocolate – a tasty doughnut! These treats will be sure to have your dog’s tummy full of love (as well as the many health benefits).
We couldn't have a blog of love without the Lobster dog toy! If you’re a fan of the TV programme Friends you will understand this quote straight away - “She's your lobster. C'mon you guys. It's a known fact that lobsters fall in love and mate for life. You can actually see old lobster couples, walking around their tank, you know, holding claws. ... See? He's her lobster!” - Phoebe Buffay in Episode The One With The Prom Video
With pink being one of the most seen colours of Valentine’s Day we could not miss this extremely comfortable pink dog carrier! One of the best presents to give letting them rest their paws in luxury and comfort. If you love this style but do not need a dog carrier you can still get the style within the designer's stunning collection of dog bow ties, dog bandana, dog bed, dog harness and dog lead.
We hope that this guide to Valentine’s presents for your dog has been helpful and given you some great ideas on what to treat your dog to this Valentine’s. We at Aurora Pets hope you have a fantastic Valentine’s day!
Welcome to our interview with Molly & Stitch designers of high-quality luxury dog beds, dog collars and leads. Their lovely dog products offer your dog style and comfort while out and about or a place for them to relax at home - just part of the reason we love them so much.
Molly & Stitch is situated on the doorstep of the beautiful Carinthian Mountains in Austria, no wonder their products are so stunning!
Aurora Pets: What is the inspiration behind Molly & Stitch? Christoph Bergauer (CEO of Molly & Stitch): In 2015, I asked my wife Louisa a simple question: Why are our dogs wearing such boring collars? After hours of research on the internet and even after a store visit, we noticed that there are actually only a few refreshing and trendy dog accessories on the market. On that day, we set a new goal: We want to commit ourselves to develop and design the most beautiful and innovative dog accessories.
Aurora Pets: Can you tell us about the Molly & Stitch team Molly & Stitch: Christoph Bergauer, CEO of Molly & Stitch, lived 7 years in Ghana, West Africa, where he also met his wife Louisa. After they spent some time there together, Louisa got pregnant with their son Harry and they decided to move back to Austria, where both also lived before. It was also very important to have only the best medical care for their child, they decided Klagenfurt in Carinthia would be the best choice. Louisa also did grow up here; she knew this was the perfect place for a fresh start. The surroundings like the mountains in Austria are especially beautiful for children. Last year they welcomed a little baby girl called Helena.
Our team is also like a little family. Julian is the chef of our production and he manages everything at our warehouse. He tells the other members of the team what their daily tasks are so that every product can be sent out to the customer as fast as possible.
Gloria is responsible for our Social Media, our Marketing as well as for the customer's service department.
Aurora Pets: What materials do you use for your dog collars and leads and why? Molly & Stitch: For our dog walking accessories we use high-quality sailing rope in different colours and sizes. The inspiration behind this comes from a hobby Chris developed in Australia. He always had a passion for sailing and the techniques he learned during that were also his idea for Molly & Stitch collars and leashes. From his own experience, the material withstands every weather, every condition, and every force - So why not using it for our dogs?
We also use only the best organic tanned leather to put the final touch to our Touch of Leather products.
Aurora Pets: What are the differences between your Sweet Dreams and Soft Rock bed designs? Molly & Stitch: The most important difference between these two beds is the material.
The Sweet Dreams bed was the first dog bed of our brand, later we added some new colours. The very soft and luxury dog bed is one of our customer's favourites.
The Soft Rock bed is an upgrade with its solid and yet soft fabric. Cleaning this bed is easier than you think and the bed covers are also fire as well as water resistant, which can be pretty convenient, especially for little puppies.
Aurora Pets: How would you describe Molly & Stitch in three words? Molly & Stitch: Colourful, high quality, passion.

As you may already know, training your puppy isn’t a walk in the park. It takes time, energy, and money to get it right. That being said, training your puppy is worth every second and cent as it will not only help your puppy develop into a well-rounded and obedient dog, it will also save you a lot of headache in the long run as an owner.
So how do you succeed in training your puppy? It’s the golden question - especially if you’ve tried before and things didn’t quite go to plan. Don’t worry - many dog owners before (and after!) you have had trouble training their pup. And although it can sometimes feel impossible, it definitely isn’t. You just need a bit of guidance and discipline to get the job done.
That’s why we’ve highlighted the below handy tips which will help you in the process of training your puppy. From must-buy items to your own behavior as a trainer, here are 3 useful tips you’ll find make all the difference to your puppy training.
1. Do your research This tip may seem a bit obvious at first, but you’d be surprised just how many dog owners dive into training their puppy without doing any research at all. Although you may think training is all about intuition, as you’ll read with our next tip - some of the preconceptions you had about training might be in fact the opposite of what you should actually do!
The best way to learn the right way to train your puppy is to do thorough research. There’s no avoiding it if you’re serious about succeeding. So set aside some time, and acquaint yourself with any books, videos, and articles on how to train a puppy. For best results, make sure the articles are written by experts or veterinarians. Of course, you should check out our blog too for some tips!
2. Focus on positive reinforcement We’ve all been faced with an unruly pup before. It can no doubt be a frustrating and even disappointing experience when your pup doesn’t do as you want it to. Perhaps you even got angry at your puppy or punished it by taking away its favorite toy. If this is you - one of the most effective things you can do to train your puppy well is to stop!
Why? Because animals - puppies included - respond best to positive reinforcement. In other words, you should reward your puppies good behavior, instead of punishing its bad behavior. The reason for this is that by rewarding positive behavior, you will encourage your puppy to keep having in that way.
Conversely, punishing bad behavior may get initial results, but you’ll soon find they go back to their bad habits. What’s more, who doesn’t like seeing their pup’s eyes light up when they receive a treat or a hug for behaving well? It’s a win-win situation for both your puppy and you!
3. Invest in an indoor playpen Training can indeed be done without spending a cent, but investing in some useful items will make a huge difference. One item we can’t recommend enough is a puppy indoor playpen. Puppy indoor playpens make it substantially easier to train your pup as it will prevent them from either running away or getting distracted by surrounding stimuli. As you’ll see, playpens come in all shapes and sizes, as well as budgets. So whatever your needs as a dog owner, you’ll be sure to find a playpen to suit.
As an added bonus, playpens can also be used for non-training purposes as well! For example, if you need a bit of a break from minding your pup, or if it’s raining outside and you still want to give them the chance to play. Once you purchase one, you’ll realize that a playpen is an item you’ll be wondering how you did without for so long. 4. Don’t give up! If you’re in the camp of having previously attempted to train your pup and you’re feeling disheartened, the best thing you can do is keep going. Once you give up, you’ll find it hard to try again in the future. So keep at it, and believe us, the reward will be well worth the output
