Have you been considering tossing your current dresser due to scratches, dings, or other damage? Or have you stumbled across the perfect piece for your bedroom at a garage sale or thrift store only to leave it behind because pink camouflage doesn’t really compliment your home’s current color scheme?

Maybe it’s something as simple to solve as missing hardware or even minor water damage caused by a carelessly placed cup. Whatever the case may be—before you decide to trash, pass, or buy something new—consider transforming your diamond-in-the-rough into the dresser of your dreams with these three easy-to-follow steps.

Before you begin you’ll need the following supplies.

  1. Drop cloth/tarp
  2. Dust mask
  3. Screwdriver (check and see what type of screws your hardware uses to determine the type of screwdriver you’ll need)
  4. Coarse, medium-grit, and fine sandpaper (consider a power sander if the piece is very large or you want to speed up the process)
  5. Paint/stain/wax etc. and applicators depending on the way you’d like your finished product to look.
  6. New hardware (handles/knobs/pulls) if desired
  1. Remove existing hardware and drawers

The first thing you need to do when tackling this fun task is to prepare your piece for the refinishing process. Start by removing the drawers and the existing hardware. Make sure to place any small pieces you remove into a container, and set them aside so they won’t get lost.

  1. Remove existing finish

Now let’s get to work. Lay down the drop cloth, and place the dresser on it. Put on your dust mask and use the coarse sandpaper to start removing any existing finish. Sand every surface—including drawers, corners, and hard-to-reach places—until you expose bare wood, or get as close as you can.*

At this point, if you’ve decided to use a stain or simply want a silkier surface, switch to the medium-grade sandpaper, then your fine grade, and sand until all exposed surface areas are completely smooth. Wipe down the dresser and drawers with a cloth to make sure every surface is free of dust. This is also a good time to break out the vacuum cleaner if you have one. You don’t want particles floating around while you apply your finish.

*If the existing paint or stain seems impossible to remove no matter how much sanding you’ve attempted, you might need to try using a chemical paint-and-varnish stripper. If this is the case, make sure you keep your workspace well-ventilated and follow all the products directions and safety instructions.

  1. Apply a new finish

Finally, it’s time to give your piece of furniture its new face. If you haven’t decided what medium you would like to use, consider the following:

  1. Paint is easy to apply and allows you to match the color of your dresser perfectly to your existing décor—however, it can take away the character of your piece by hiding the natural grain of the wood
  2. Stain is a classic option that allows you to see the beautiful wood grain of your dresser and is also offered in many of colors that make coordinating with your existing furniture a cinch—but it’s less forgiving if you make mistakes during application
  3. Wax allows you to show off the natural beauty of your refinished piece, but it can be a time-consuming process depending on the number of coats you apply and how long you spend buffing

Whether you choose to paint, stain, wax, or utilize some other creative finishing technique, take your time and pay attention to the details. Apply as many coats as needed to achieve the look you want—and make sure you allow each coat to dry before applying the next one!

After your finish has completely dried, remount or replace any missing or removed hardware, return the drawers to the dresser, and admire the results of all your hard work. You may not have made the dresser from scratch, but you definitely made it your own!

When you’re young, strong, and on a shoestring budget, the idea of paying a professional to help move your things into a new home might seem preposterous. After all, why should you hand over your hard-earned money when you’re completely capable of doing it yourself?

While it might seem contrary to common sense, hiring a moving company can actually save you time, money, and maybe even your back. So, if you’re preparing to pack up and run out to rent a truck, take a moment to consider these three reasons you should hire a pro instead.

  1. It saves time

Tackling a move by yourself can be a time-consuming task. Even if you have extra hands willing to help, you’ll still have to make calls and work around other people’s schedules. Once you include the number of hours it takes to get supplies, pack up, and rent a truck to haul everything over to your new place, you can start to see why the idea of D.I.Y might as well be D.O.A.

By simply scheduling an appointment and signing a few documents, you can hire a team of professionals to take care of everything for you. Also, while many people only hire movers to load up their belongings from one place and unload them at another, you also have the option to pay for them to do all of the packings as well.

  1. It helps prevent damage to you and your belongings

Have you ever found yourself frustrated—and possibly hurt—while trying to maneuver a large couch up multiple flights of stairs, or perhaps ruined your furniture’s finish while attempting to find just the right angle to allow you to fit an unwieldy piece through your front door? If so, the memory is often enough to make you never want to move again.

However, hiring professional movers will take the hassle out of ever having to haul heavy furniture and burdensome boxes again. Let’s face it—professional movers have the right equipment and skills to ensure your stuff makes it safely inside your new home—whereas, most of us tend to adopt a hold-on-and-hope-for-the-best approach which can lead to you and/or your belongings being damaged (sometimes beyond repair).

  1. It can save you money

Initial math will almost surely side with the D.I.Y. method being your most cost-effective choice for moving, but hidden—and sometimes unpredictable—expenses might be enough to make you reconsider.

You’ll not only need to rent a truck, pay for gas, and purchase packing supplies, but you’ll also probably have to buy lunch for your friends helping you move—not to mention, you’ll be on the hook for any items that might be damaged in the process.

Considering the average cost of hiring a mover, and assuming you don’t get scammed or end up with a large medical bill from a blown-out back or broken bone, paying a professional can end up costing the same (or only slightly more) than doing it yourself. However, if time is also money, you’ll undoubtedly save a bunch by choosing to hire a moving company

Finding the time and energy to keep a home tidy is a task that’s proven to be difficult for people at every stage of life—whether in school and busy studying, building a career, or trying to maintain a hectic social schedule, so it should come as no surprise the housekeeping industry generates billions of dollars in revenue every year.

For some, this type of service makes sense, whether it’s having a maid come by monthly to help tackle big cleaning chores or more frequently to keep on top of day-to-day operations, but if you’re not quite ready to pull the trigger, try getting into these four habits to make your mess more manageable.

Make your bed every day

Something as simple as making your bed may not seem like it would make much of an impact on helping keep your home clean but, once you’re in the habit, the results can be life-changing. Not only is it nice to come home to after an exhausting day, but it can fundamentally transform how you see your space and your desire to keep it clean. Try it out for yourself and you’ll soon see why this seemingly innocuous task is included on countless life-hack lists across the net—it’s even been said: “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”

Sort your mail

Sorting through your mail—keeping only the essentials and recycling the rest—after every trip to the mailbox helps prevent piles of paper from building up into mountains of chaotic clutter. Plus, it makes it easier to dust and shine the surfaces in your space when the occasion calls for a deeper clean. So, before your home requires a Marie-Kondo-style makeover, stop stacking and start sorting.

Do your dishes daily

Staring down at a sink full of dirty dishes can be discouraging. Instead of allowing them to stack up, try doing them daily, and the task will be less daunting. If your apartment has a dishwasher, start it before bed and unload in the morning while you make coffee/breakfast. Aside from the obvious benefit of always having clean dishes at your disposal, it will also help keep bugs and unpleasant smells at bay.

Put your clothes away where they belong

Believe it or not, your floor is not a very large drawer—though we all know someone who might beg to differ. It’s tempting to take your clothes off after a long day—or freshly clean from the dryer—and toss them on the table, your bed, or yes, even the floor. Resist the urge, and take the time to put them away properly. It’s not the most enjoyable process, but you’ll never have to dig through a giant pile to find a clean pair of socks or show up to work dressed exclusively in wrinkles.

Good housekeeping habits can feel difficult to establish and maintain, but if you spend a few minutes a day on these routines you’ll be setting yourself up for some really positive rewards—it will be easier to find the things you need, you can relax more easily in your space, and you’ll even be healthier. There’s no better time to start, so go make your bed!
