Having a hard time getting back into the Halloween spirit? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a creepy new series to binge? Whatever the case, fear not! The answer to all your problems (as always) is anime, and we’ve concocted the perfect potion to bring your love of Halloween… back to life!

INGREDIENTS: Supernatural

Halloween is not all gore and horror.

Some believe it’s a time when the veil between our world and the ‘other side’ is thinnest. While I’m all about the red stuff, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the lighter side of Halloween with some fantasy style anime.

Gegege No Kitaro is a great place to start, especially if you’re a fan of Yōkai based stories.

The story is a familiar one: people have forgotten about Yōkai, so when strange things start happening they don’t know what to do… Until someone sends a letter through a strange mailbox and Kitaro arrive with a clop clop!

For something a little more adult, you can’t go wrong with Hozuki’s Coolheadedness. It’s about the day-to-day trials and problems that arise for Hozuki, the demon who takes care of the administrative side of hell.

Though my personal fave of this type of anime is a cute combo of fantasy and Slice of Life, known as The Devil Is A Part Timer, about how the actual devil comes to the human plane and has to get a job at a fast food restaurant.

These shows have minimal gore, but they all stick to the supernatural theme. There’s also plenty of others to choose from, like Wizard Barristers and Concrete Revolutio, so you won’t run out of options.

Trick AND Treat.

Maybe you like your Halloween anime like your lolly haul, not too much of any one flavour, but still mostly red… If that’s the case, you’ll need to watch Calamity of A Zombie Girl.

This movie has everything a horror film should have: a group of students messing with things they shouldn’t, an ancient power being awakened, slapstick comedy where people lose limbs and vicious fight scenes with broken bones poking through the skin.

You can also mix things up with anime like Overlord which has a fair degree of violence while also leaning heavily on the fantasy feel. Or Noragami, which starts out quite cute, but has some darker edges to it.

And of course, any Halloween list that doesn’t include Black Butler (with it’s melding of all kinds of themes) isn’t worth its salt!

Vampires

You don’t want your anime Halloween potion to suck, so you have to include vampires!

If you’re a fan of Vampire Knight, but always thought it could do with more guys who have wolves in their chests and faces in their hands, then Vampire Hunter D is the show for you.

That feeling when it’s Halloween and your dessert stomach is like….

It tells the story of D, a dhampir (half vampire, half human) who is on a mission to save a lady from a vampire, but not all is as it seems…

Need something a little lighter? Perhaps try Actually I Am. It’s a romantic comedy about a normal high school boy, who finds out his crush, Youko Shiragami, is a vampire! (Her name should have been a giveaway) And she’s not the only one in the school with a secret. The only time you’ll see blood here is during the nosebleeds.

Of course, there are many other great vampire series to choose from too, such as Seraph of the End, Hellsing and Servamp!

Zombies

To reanimate your love of Halloween, you’ll definitely need zombies. Loads of zombies! Sankrea: Undying Love is a cute way to get into the zombie anime genre.

If you like your horror with a big dollop of soppy love… if you think Romeo and Juliet would have been better if they’d been undead… if you’ve always thought dating zombie girls would be a good thing… then this anime is for you. This series does have some quite disturbing elements though (yes, there are things more disturbing than dating zombie girls), so be warned.

If you like your zombie love stories with more blood than Slice of Life, then Highschool of the Dead is probably a better fit for you. Or if you want something with a mix of comedy and horror, Is This A Zombie? is the hilarious tale of a boy who was turned into a zombie after falling victim to a serial killer.

Suspense

Sometimes the scariest things are not the ones that go bump in the night, but rather the knowledge that the real monsters are humans standing among us.

Mysteries where the stakes are high are a great way to get the blood pumping through your veins, and of course there’s plenty of anime that can do that for you.

Psycho-Pass is a great place to start for gore and mystery. You’ll never feel safe while watching this series.

Of all the scary things in this show, these two are still the things that creep me out the most.

Want something a little more supernatural? Death Parade is where you should head. It’s about a bar that people are sent to at their end of their lives. There’s no heaven or hell, just a game they’re forced to play to draw out the darkest part of their souls… which will ultimately determine their fate.

There’s plenty of mystery to keep you wanting to learn more and enough gore to make you reel back in horror.

Gore

If you’re going to make a potion for Halloween, it’s going to need loads of red, and in the world of anime, you’re spoiled for choice!

Let’s start off with the Blood-C series, then add a little  Elfen Lied and a side of Deadman Wonderland. Keen to add in a little extra spice? You’ll definitely want to heap on the Tokyo Ghoul!

It’s about a world where ghouls stalk the night, appearing as humans until it’s time to feed. But there is more to their story, as Kaneki Ken discovers after he recieves ghoul organs, following a horrific accident. There’s huge globs of gore, a storyline that won’t let you go and characters who will just… consume you.

Not only is the anime available to watch on AnimeLab, but also the Tokyo Ghoul live-action adaptation! This one is only available to stream for a limited time, so you should start watching while you can!

The countdown timer starts at 1000 and goes down by 7….

Now you should have everything you need to get into the spooky spirit of the season. The ratios are up to you, but I hope this helps you kick start your Halloween watching.

Let us know which shows you’re watching to get your Halloween feels on!

Get ready for your hype levels to power up beyond Super Saiyan 4… the new trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Broly has JUST landed!!

Toei Animation unveiled the first trailer for the film during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. During the panel, it was mentioned that series creator Akira Toriyama has worked on this film more than any other Dragon Ball film released.

There will be some changes to Broly’s backstory from the previous Dragon Ball films, so don’t expect this movie to be anything like them!

Watch the exclusive English dub trailer reveal from IGN below…

Dragon Ball Super: Broly Movie Trailer (English Dub Reveal) Exclusive - Comic Con 2018 - YouTube

The trailer teases some killer clashes too – Broly vs. Vegeta, Broly vs. Frieza and Broly vs. Goku! How are they going to fit all this action into one movie!? And what’s with the mysterious looking Saiyan tail at the end…?

New character designs for Goku, Vegeta and Broly were also revealed at SDCC!

Broly’s designs looking great!

Does this mean Super Saiyan God Vegeta???

Goku looking cool and powerful as always!

Original manga creator Akira Toriyama previously provided the following comment for the film:

Everyone, do you know who Broly is? He appeared only in past anime films, and is a ridiculously strong Saiyan. I am told I only drew his design; at that time I was mostly uninvolved with the anime, and so I completely forgot the details.

Even now it seems Broly is still very popular not just in Japan, but overseas as well, and because of that, the supervisors suggested, “Why don’t we make the movie about Broly this time?”

At that time I was shown the film, and I felt that it would become really interesting depending on how it’s arranged, so we started talking immediately about including [Broly] into the Dragon Ball Super series.

In order to not disappoint Broly fans, I was conscious of Broly’s past image, while also giving him new aspects, and I think he ended up as a fascinating Broly.

Of course, the film won’t just show amazing battles — it will also show what kind of fate Goku, Vegeta, and Broly will follow when they meet; how the Frieza Army is connected; and the history of the Saiyans — the content of the film is dramatic and has a huge scale.

There will be lots of other content that will be included for all the fans, so please look forward to it and wait a little longer until it is complete!!

Dragon Ball Super: Broly hits cinemas in Japan on December 14 and is coming to North America in January 2019.

There’s no news for Australia and New Zealand yet, but stay tuned for updates!

Looking back at some of David Production’s recent works, it’s evident that they have always endeavoured to produce a range of genres and animation styles. Whether it’s the long-running hit series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure or even the more light-hearted Ben-To, David Productions have established themselves in recent years as one of the many influential companies working in anime today.

So Cells at Work! is an interesting take on the cells that work in the body, presenting the different blood cells as anthropomorphic characters that run around in order to accomplish various tasks. Right off the bat, we are introduced to the the “roughly 37.2 trillion cells” that work to make the human body function. The series opens with big open shots that illustrate the various settings and the large number of people running around.

Following this, we are introduced to our female protagonist Erythrocyte or Red Blood Cell, who to my knowledge does not have an individual name other than her serial number of AE3803. What the show does incredibly well is establishing all these key characters within the first couple of minutes. We get quick glimpses of this new world, followed by our protagonist who is attacked by a gang of Pneumococcus germs who become the main antagonist of the first episode. This interaction also involves the introduction of our second main character, Neutrophil or White Blood Cell who is also only recognised by his serial number U-1146.

To an extent, I understand why they chose not to give these two characters names as it gives them a sense of industry. They aren’t special or uniquely individual blood cells, but rather just another member of the large cohort (think FN-2187 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens). I’m not familiar with the original manga, and thus I am hoping that maybe they’ll give these characters names that aren’t “White Blood Cell” or “Red Blood Cell”. I don’t know, maybe I just find it strange.

Anyway, the first episode plays heavily with the contrasting and often playful dynamic between the two main characters. We have a young, goofy and awkward female character that is introduced to an intense and slightly intimidating male character that’s sole purpose is to exterminate any germs.

Red Blood Cells deliver oxygen and carbon dioxide around the body through blood circulation, basically like a food delivery system that runs around carrying packages. Her mission to delivery oxygen to the lungs is first depicted through a delightful montage of her trying to enter different areas, only to discover that she was nowhere near where she needs to be in the first place. This is interrupted, however, when she discovers that a rogue Pneumococcus germ cell is also trying to get to the lungs, and thus chaos ensues between her and the White Blood Cell.

Definitely the strongest point of this series is the comedy. It’s fun, light-hearted and not over-the-top. A lot of it stems from the Red Blood Cell’s character, whose ditzy and quirky behaviour is juxtaposed against the cut-throat chase between a typical male hero protagonist (White Blood Cell) and the over dramatic villain antagonist (Pneumococcus). There are certain instances where I felt that the comedy would be a little left field or out of place, especially in sequences where the two characters are engaged in an epic battle while the Red Blood Cell squeals in fear in the background. But that’s in no fault of the series, because its ability to juggle a rich and engaging action plot inside an otherwise comedic storyline is both unique and well-handled. Once you get over the weird contrast, it’s easy to recognise that the contrast actually contributes to the overall comedic tone.

At its core, the concept is what separates this show from the rest of what Japan’s industry has to offer. It depicts the human body system as this living and breathing world (pun intended) with different entities running around to get jobs done. There’s the Red Blood Cells that act as the standard, average population, who are protected by the White Blood Cells or even the Killer T Cells that act as the defence force (like the Police or the FBI) against dangerous germs. There are even Platelets who are portrayed as adorable little children running around with small tools like chairs or ladders.

If it isn’t the precious children doing chores that gets you hooked, or the surprisingly strong comedic timing, perhaps the music soundtrack will get you pumped. The opening in particular was a lot of fun. Without even seeing a second of the actual show, the song’s upbeat tempo and catchy tune will have you obsessed with the show’s characters from the get-go, even if you have no idea who anyone is.

I reckon a lot of people will get a huge kick out of this, especially if you’re well-versed with human biology and the way the body works. It’s got charismatic characters, an interesting concept, phenomenal comedy that will have you laughing out loud, the list goes on…

Seeing as though it’s only the first episode, it’ll be interesting to see where the writers take the show. The first episode was a solid introduction into this world and the characters, and I’m excited to see what kind of overarching story arc they chose to write into the show.

– Ethan D.
