The weather is heating up, the days are becoming longer, and there’s no better time than now to enjoy an ice-cold adult beverage. No matter if you’re spending your weekends lazily lounging by the pool or heading to a friend’s barbecue, whipping up tasty cocktails is a guaranteed way to win over your friends and family. Since a frosty, cool drink can be a summer staple, we’ve gathered a few recipes to help you beat the heat and stay refreshed. So grab a few glasses and let’s raise a toast to these tasty summer cocktails.

Blackberry cucumber gin and tonic

A sweet twist on an otherwise simple classic, the blackberry cucumber gin and tonic is guaranteed to hit the spot. Even better? It’s super easy to make! That’s right, the only four ingredients are labeled right in the title, all that’s left to do is mix, shake and pour.

  • 8 fresh blackberries
  • 3-4 slices of cucumber
  • 1-1.5 ounces of gin (your favorite brand)
  • 1 cup tonic
  1. Pour a few of your blackberries into the bottom of your cup and smash with a fork.
  2. Add ice.
  3. Pour gin and mix with the blackberries.
  4. Pour in your tonic.
  5. Garnish with blackberries and cucumber slices.
  6. Enjoy!
Watermelon mojito

You’ll probably want some friends here, because this refreshing watermelon mojito is good for six drinks. If not, you can always leave the big batch in a large, sealed container for later. Just be sure to store it in the fridge.

  • 30(ish) mint leaves
  • 3-4 slices of fresh watermelon
  • 12 ounces light rum (your favorite brand)
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup
  • 3 limes
  1. Grab your pitcher!
  2. Cut up your watermelon and remove the seeds before tossing it into a food processor to puree.
  3. As the watermelon is pureeing, mash the mint leaves.
  4. Add the watermelon and mashed mint to the pitcher.
  5. Add the rum, simple syrup & lime juice.
  6. Stir to combine & pour over ice.
  7. Garnish with fresh mint.
  8. Drink up!
Rosé sangria

We don’t know about your drinking preferences, but it’s pretty hard to go wrong when it comes to sangria. A little bit of sweet, a little bit of booze and a whole lot of flavor makes this drink a favorite no matter if you’re at a barbecue, the lake, or just lounging around your apartment. The best part? It’s super easy to make!

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water (pro tip: if you want to skip the prep work, buy simple syrup in place of the sugar and water)
  • 2 1/2 cups rosé
  • 2 1/2 cups sweet sparkling wine
  • 1/3 cup blueberry rum
  • 1/2 cup assorted fruit (we recommend strawberries and blueberries)
  1. Toss the sugar and water in a pot and heat until it reaches a boil. Stir until the syrup is formed before setting aside to cool. Or, as mentioned above, buy some simple syrup.
  2. In a pitcher, combine the rosé, sweet sparkling wine, rum and fruits.
  3. Add in your homemade (or store bought) simple syrup and stir.
  4. Pour over ice to enjoy now, or refrigerate overnight to enjoy the next day.

With summer picking up momentum, it’s only a matter of time before weekend barbecues are in full swing. When you aren’t in the mood to start up the grill (or cross the bridge into Seattle for Dick’s), there are plenty of delicious burger joints in the Bellevue area for you to get your fix. Below, we’ve pulled together a list of three hot-spots to grab a mouthwatering burger, all close to AMLI’s downtown Bellevue apartments.

Lunchbox Lab

989 112th Ave. NE

Serving up eclectic cocktails and juicy burgers since 2011, Lunchbox Lab first started in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood before expanding to locations including Bellevue, Green Lake, Redmond and Gig Harbor. Sporting old school vibes complete with ’80s video games and vibrant decor, there’s plenty to do, see and eat over at the Lunchbox Lab. With a daily happy hour from 3pm-6pm and 9pm until closing time, as well as a kids eat free special each Wednesday from 5pm until close, this is the perfect spot to bring the whole family. Their one-of-a-kind burgers range in flavor, where you’re given the opportunity to include add-ons and create the perfect bite. Some of their burgers include:

  • OG Tear Jerker – American Kobe beef patty with pepper jack cheese, grilled onions and jalapenos, topped with Satan’s Tears Ketchup and habanero mayo.
  • Mack Daddy ‘Merican – Two all beef patties, Billion Island sauce, lettuce, tomato, American cheese, pickles and onions served on an organic bun.
  • The Smoker – American Kobe beef patty served with smoked Gouda, bacon, grilled onions and Smoker Sauce.
  • Bahn, James Bahn – Duck and Pork patty finished with pickled carrots, cucumber, daikon, fresh cilantro and sweet chili mayo.

We could continue, but you get the idea. Enjoy your burger with a lunchbox cocktail, specialty shake or boozie shake, where you can choose from flavors such as the Cinnamon Toast Crunk or the Drunken Elvis, which combines vanilla ice cream, graham cracker, peanut butter and banana before its finished with Malibu banana, pinnacle-whipped vodka and Irish cream. Trust us when we say you won’t want to miss out on this place.

Katsu Burger

12700 SE 38th St.

Home to the Japanese deep-fried burger, Katsu Burger present unique takes on an all-American classic. Here, each burger is handmade and seasoned with miso before being breaded and fried for your enjoyment. Each patty is 100 percent grass-fed beef, and the sauces are made in-house daily to ensure quality and freshness. While each burger comes with pickles, red onion, tomato and shredded cabbage, feel free to customize your meal to create the perfect burger. Menu items include:

  • Tokyo Classic – Grass-fed beed Katsu, tonkatsu sauce and Japanese mayo.
  • Ninja Deluxe – crispy pork loin Katsu, topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, tonkatsu sauce and Japanese mayo.
  • Miso Honey Tofu – Organic Miso marinated crispy tofue, finished with Miso Honey mustard and all the fixin’s.
  • Teriyaki Chicken – Natural chicken breast topped with sweet pineapple, Teriyaki sauce and Japanese mayo.

For side options, choose from a variety of delicious fries, as well as seaweed salad or Korokke, a Japanese deep-friend croquette with potatoes and vegetables. Come on in to enjoy a burger, or order online and take it back to your apartment.

10606 NE Northup Way

For more than 60 years, Burgermaster has been serving up great pairings of burgers and fries in the Seattle area. A family-owned business, Burgermaster has since expanded to six various locations throughout the region, and prides itself on high-quality options with grass-fed beef in all of their hamburgers. The menu is strictly traditional, so you won’t be finding anything too out of the ordinary. Sometimes, though, the best food comes simple and straight up. Check out some of their menu options below:

  • Burgermaster – Ground-beef patty with American cheese, tomato, lettuce and relish on a toasted bun.
  • Burgermelt – Two ground-beef patties, two slices of cheese, ketchup and mustard on a toasted bun.
  • Chickenmaster – A quarter-pound grilled chicken breast on a toasted bun, with lettuce, tomato and mayo.

For those of you looking for the best of both worlds, Burgermaster also offers combos, where you can pair your favorite burger with a thick and tasty milkshake. Flavors include your classic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry varieties, as well as more adventurous flavors such as pineapple, mint and pumpkin. If you’re still hungry (don’t worry, we aren’t judging), enjoy a chocolate chip cookie or slice of hot apple pie for dessert. Yum!

Remember when we were younger and our parents used to tell us that breakfast was the most important meal of the day? They weren’t wrong, but more often than not—people are mindlessly pouring another bowl of cereal or grabbing toast with a cup of coffee as they run out the door to begin their day. And while there’s nothing wrong with throwing together a quick breakfast, you’ll find much more good in creating a meal that’s healthy and packed with protein.

Why a hearty breakfast matters You stay fuller longer

Several studies have indicated that adding lean protein to your breakfast can curb your appetite and cravings for the remainder of the day. Wondering why? Well, protein-packed meals release the hormone ghrelin, also known as the “hunger hormone,” which stimulates the appetite and can intensify your hunger. Therefore, adding protein to your diet will increase your fullness and reduce your hunger, potentially keeping you from grabbing the glazed doughnut that’s been eyeing you in your office.

It fuels your metabolism

Simply put, more protein means a faster metabolism, and a faster metabolism means more calories burned. Foods that are rich in protein will not only provide you with more energy, but it will also keep you from losing muscle mass. Seems like a win-win, right?

Many people adding protein-packed foods to their breakfast regimen start first by just making scrambled eggs every day, but that can get old fairly quick. Luckily, creating healthy breakfast options isn’t as challenging as you may think. In order to help fuel your day in a delicious way, we’ve gathered three breakfast options for you to create in your apartment. And don’t worry, we understand that mornings can be hectic, so we made sure they are quick and easy to make so you can get on with your day. Enjoy!

Try these recipes Blueberry Spinach Smoothie

The good thing about smoothies is you can pretty much take almost any sensible fruit and vegetable combination available in your kitchen, toss it in a blender and have a 95 percent chance that things will turn out delicious. And while smoothie concoctions may seem endless, we were able to find one that’s easy to make yet still packed with flavor.

  • 2/3 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 banana
  • 2/3 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 large strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1/2 cup milk (skim, whole, almond…the choice is yours!)
  • 2 tsp protein powder, optional
  • 1 tbsp honey, optional

Now throw it all together and press the blend button. Just like that, you’re done! And remember, you don’t always need protein powder to create a protein smoothie. You won’t get as much as you would with the powder, but here the Greek yogurt still acts as an excellent source of protein.

Berry Cinnamon Greek Yogurt Parfait

With only six ingredients, this scrumptious breakfast option has 27 grams of protein! Get the recipe below:

  • 7 ounces 2 percent Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup berries of your choice
  • 1 ounce chopped walnuts
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • Honey to taste

Now the creation process is up to you. You can either blend all of the ingredients together to create a sweet concoction, or layer the ingredients to build yourself a parfait bowl. Once you’ve finished, dust a layer of cinnamon and add a drizzle of honey to create additional sweetness.

Protein Eggsadilla

Alright now we will admit, this does have eggs. However, we’ve made sure it’s a recipe that adds loads of flair and flavor, making it the perfect go-to dish.

  • 1 egg
  • 2 egg whites
  • Whole wheat tortilla
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheese
  • 1 tbsp salsa
  • Salt & pepper to taste, optional

Once you’ve gathered all of your ingredients, scramble the egg with the egg whites before placing on your whole-wheat tortilla. Add your cheese and salsa and top with salt and pepper if the extra spice is wanted, before rolling your tortilla up and digging in. Super easy, and super yummy!

We’re just about halfway through 2019, and AMLI has already exceeded expectations in meeting several sustainability milestones. Here’s a quick run-down of what’s been lighting up on our radar.

Habitat for Humanity Donor Appreciation Award

In May, AMLI received a Donor Appreciation Award from the Austin Habitat for Humanity ReStore, where we donated over $220,000 worth of materials, furniture and appliances as part of our on-going renovations to our communities in the area. These donations will allow local Austin businesses and homeowners to renovate for less than the cost of buying new, and keep these items from being pitched into local landfills. It’s estimated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality that around 5,500+ tons of waste enters Travis County landfills every single day.

Items we donated, included:

  • cabinets
  • refrigerators
  • ovens
  • washers and dryers
  • dishwashers
  • plumbing fixtures
  • sink bases
  • light fixtures
  • ceiling fans

If you’re in the Austin area, be sure to swing by fast. The Austin ReStore location has some of the highest sales in the country. These items may not be there for long!

ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award

In April, the EPA named AMLI a Partner of the Year for our commitment to achieving ENERGY STAR certification for our new and existing communities. Apartment communities that receive this distinction use much less energy and resources than average through their overall design and by using highly-efficient appliances to cut down on waste. AMLI has 27 communities certified by ENERGY STAR, and those communities perform in the top 25 percent of similar multifamily buildings nationwide.

AMLI Residential on LinkedIn: “We’re proud to announce a new first! We’ve received a 2019 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award! Congrats to all the winners and huge thanks to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). #ENERGYSTARawards #energystar”

Earth Day Recycling Drive

To celebrate Earth Day this year, AMLI completed its first nationwide electronics recycling drive. Residents were encouraged to recycle their old electronics at their community’s leasing office, and in exchange would be entered in a raffle to win a new TV. A winner was selected for each of AMLI’s nine regions, with TVs provided by CORT Furniture. Residents across the country recycled over 1,800 items, with AMLI Deerfield near Chicago collecting the most. The Chicago area placed first in number of recycled items overall, the Austin region came in a close second behind Chicago, followed by Houston in third.

Thanks to all the residents who participated! And congrats to those who won!

AMLI Buckhead goes LEED® Platinum

Our newest community in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood recently received one of the most highly-regarded sustainability nods in the building trades.

In March, AMLI Buckhead achieved LEED Platinum status, the highest award available for LEED certification. Similar to ENERGY STAR, the award was received due to a forward-thinking, efficient design at the community level, but also in large part due to the building’s location. Uncommon for most of Atlanta, AMLI Buckhead is within walking distance to the MARTA, the city’s public commuter train, and the walkable portion of the local neighborhood as well.

This comes in addition to having Marie Sims Park, Buckhead’s newest greenspace, directly outside its doors. Marie Sims Park was created by AMLI for our residents and the public to enjoy, and uses landscaping that helps ease the impact of stormwater runoff in neighborhood. Other features that contributed to AMLI Buckhead’s LEED Platinum achievement include use of low or no VOC paints, high-grade air filtration, electric car charging stations, bicycle storage and water-efficient fixtures.

Looking forward

Coming up next month, we have our third annual AMLI Sustainable Living Index. This is a survey we send to all our residents to see where their sustainability priorities lie and whether we are meeting expectations. It’s always exciting to see the numbers roll in and how they compare. Last year, we saw 84 percent of respondents say they believe in global warming and/or climate change, and 83 percent of respondents say they believe that living in a green community is beneficial to their health.

On the development front, AMLI currently has 18 LEED developments in design or construction phases, with some of those already leasing or expected to be move-in ready this year. Our newest projects to begin leasing include:

The future looks bright. We hope you’ll continue to join us on our path to create a more sustainable present—and future.

Open seven days a week until 2am, choose from a wide variety of doughnuts and top the off with a tasty dipping sauce. Wondering what your choices are? As the weather continues to warm up, it’s become all the more necessary to find the perfect cold treat to suit your sweet tooth and keep you cool for the summer. And if you’re wondering what that cold snack may be—yes, the answer is ice cream. Around our Ft. Lauderdale apartment rentals, there are plenty of ice cream shops for you to enjoy, and we recommend trying every single one of them.

Wilton Creamery

2301 Wilton Drive

Differing from your average mom-and-pop ice cream shop, Wilton Creamery defines itself as an “upscale boutique.” A loft space with industrial decor, take your pick from either indoor or outdoor seating as you try out their multitude of ice cream flavors. With vegan. gluten-free and non-dairy options, no dietary restriction can refrain you from making your way over to Wilton’s and enjoying a tasty snack! Some of their most popular flavor choices include:

  • Triple rum raisin
  • Nutella crunch
  • Key lime
  • Strong coffee

And for all you single folks out there? The “He’s Not Worth It!” is your go-to. This vanilla and English toffee ice cream includes Oreo cookies, Heath bar and chopped soft caramel, all finished with a swirl of sea salt caramel. Not too shabby, right? If you aren’t in the mood for ice cream, Wilton Creamery also offers shakes, sundaes and bubble tea for your convenience.

Sloan’s Ice Cream

700 S. Rosemary Ave.

A retro shop bringing you back to the 1950s, Sloan’s Ice Cream provides you with traditional ice cream flavors we all know and love. Enjoy your ice cream in a freshly made waffle cone, or add a freshly baked cookie to your order. With its first location opening in Palm Beach in 1999, Sloan’s has since expanded to more than 15 locations in Florida, California and even the Middle East. Their melt-in-your-mouth flavors include options such as the Almond Joy, Mom’s Apple Pie and Birthday, which is loaded with chunks of buttercream frosted chocolate and yellow birthday cake. For those looking to try unique flavors that you can’t find elsewhere, we recommend the Coffee and Doughnuts, a creamy coffee ice cream with Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts thrown into the mix. Our only recommendation? Make sure you wear your stretchy pants! Other flavors include:

  • Fresh Strawberry
  • Mint Chocolate Chunk
  • Oatmeal Raisin Cookie
  • S’mores

Sloan’s is open until 11pm during the weekdays and midnight on the weekends. Be sure to stop on by!

Yo Mama’s Ice Cream

901 Sunrise Lane

Homemade and made from scratch right in front of its customers, Yo Mama’s Ice Cream is one of a kind. Specializing in sundaes, banana splits, milkshakes and more, Yo Mama’s is made daily on-site to create fresh flavors you’re sure to love. To create your own unique dish, Yo Mama’s offers a topping bar, where you can specialize your dessert with options such as fruit, brownie bites, chocolate chips and plenty of sprinkles, among other toppings. Although their flavor options vary, popular choices include the caramel fudge bomb and coconut cream, finished with white chocolate chips and coconut shavings. To add some crunch into your dessert, Yo Mam’s created its own specialized popcorn, with flavors such as caramel, cheddar and chocolate covered caramel. All we can say is, yum! This popular destination is sure to get busy during the weekends, so be sure to get there early! Because we’re pretty sure the saying is no dinner before dessert, right?

As you walk through the grocery store aisles, it’s easy to mindlessly grab items that may not have necessarily made your list, but caught your eye and became an impulse buy. We get it, we’ve all been there. However, once this happens—it’s only a matter of time before you get home to your apartment and realize that figuring out how to organize your kitchen pantry has become a somewhat messy, unorganized and unmanageable task. Between the half-eaten bags of chips, the varying sizes of food containers and the food you forgot you even had, your pantry can become a disaster area if you don’t stay on top of it. By properly organizing your kitchen pantry, specific items will be easier to find, all while giving yourself more room and less mess.

The weekly clean out

Although this may seem like a daunting task, we promise it’s worth it! Set aside 10 minutes each week to sift through your kitchen pantry cabinet and throw out anything that’s no longer of use to you. These items could include items that have either expired, or you don’t plan on eating. You’d be surprised at just how much extra food you have and be amazed by what a little bit of clean-up can do.

Clear containers/label makers

Now comes the fun part. Once you’ve finished cleaning out your kitchen pantry, you can begin organizing it in a way that will make everything easier to find, and upgrade the aesthetic of your pantry in the process. Using clear plastic or glass containers will help you quickly find what you’re looking for, especially once you’ve labeled it with a handy-dandy label maker! (If you don’t have a label-maker, don’t worry, stickers will work just as well). Make sure to use containers that are easily stackable, providing you with additional room for storage while keeping everything tidy and compact. Simply transfer your food from its original packaging to these containers. Or, better yet, purchase loose items like dried fruits, nuts, oatmeal and grains like rice from the bulk bins at your local store. You’ll no longer be rummaging through endless boxes and bags to find what you’re looking for.

Group like items

To continue on the organizational streak we have going, it’s important to group similar items together. This will not only make things easier to find, but it will also make all your food items more accessible so you aren’t rummaging through your pantry to find the secret ingredient your homemade chocolate cookies need to have. Move spices and baking items you may use regularly toward the front of your kitchen pantry for easy access, followed by others. Snack items can go on another shelf, the same for canned goods you may have stocked up on—you get the gist.

Door storage

For those of you looking to create additional storage space within your kitchen pantry, adding door storage may be of use to you. Easy to install, this will aid in providing quick access to your most widely used items and ingredients. All you need is a rack with handles that can be placed over your door—and voila! You can even use a hanging shoe organizer for this if you already have one. Try looking at your retail store, or click here to shop for door storage online.

Pots and pans

There’s no denying that storing your pots and pans can pose the most difficulty and the largest hassle when organizing your pantry. It’s already a challenge making room for all of your pots, never mind making room for all of its corresponding lids! And although many may think it’s important to keep sets together, it takes up more space and is less organizationally-savvy for those looking for a greater uniform. Instead, we recommend separating your lids from your pots/pans and hanging them (with the help of your handy-dandy door storage) to make them more accessible and easier to find.

And there you have it folks, follow these few easy steps and you’ll soon have the kitchen pantry of your dreams! That wasn’t too hard, right?
