What Impact do Women have in the World of Technology?

At Techerati’s collaboration with Funny Women’s HERlarious on March 12th 2019, the panel was asked, “What impact do women have in the world of technology?”

As the panel was a business woman who set up a bank, a female leader in blockchain, a business woman in Forensics with an OBE, it was quite clear to me from the panel line up, women in technology bring talent, vision for change and expertise!

The panel’s answers to the question, “What impact do women have in the world of technology?” included “products and services will be developed for the whole population, not just one side” and “we ask the really obvious questions and that’s a good thing” and “ it’s very important to have a different view, especially in AI”

What would you say? ⠀

Let’s continue to encourage more women to work in tech. “Being a coder isn’t the only job in tech to have. The industry also needs female designers, data scientists and managers to enable a more balanced society in the future” Richard Freeman PHD.

“So tell your success stories you have about women in technology and break down the stereotypes,” said Sarah Williams-Gardener.

Thanks to Lynne Parker, CEO and founder of Funny Women for showcasing her #funnywomen HERlarious event for #iwd2019 and the brilliant panel Genevieve Leveille (Blockchain Leader),  Sarah Williams-Gardener (CEO Starling Bank),  Kirsty Cooke (facilitator) Deb Leary OBE (CEO Forensic Pathways Ltd) and Richard Freeman PHD (JustGiving). ⠀

and…

A nod to the World Wide Web being 30 years old today. And I learned the first programmer was a woman, Ada Lovelace, tell your daughters! #womenintech #stem #datascience#design #doit .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Time to Play and Overcome Your Fears

Wow we’re already halfway through Quarter 1 and it’s half term for many this week and next in the UK. Time to play! Even if you don’t have children, maybe it’s time to take a few days off too this week? Or book a holiday for later and go somewhere new to explore?

When we were children we were less afraid weren’t we?

If you grew up in the 60′s and 70′s we had far fewer rules. Quite ridiculous but we didn’t even wear seatbelts!

I remember climbing trees and riding my bike for miles, going out in the evenings with my younger brother, not coming home ’til it got dark.  Playing outside, fearless.

Sadly, fear is something we learn.  We are only born with two fears and that’s the fear of falling and loud noises. Surprisingly,  all other fears are learned.  I was quite shocked when I learned that fact.  But it’s a good fact.

It means, if we have learned to fear, we can un-learn our fears.  As well as helping people to get over the fear of ‘selling’, I have helped people to  their nerves and present with more confidence, get over the fear of flying so they can enjoy summer holidays again; an interior designer to get over her fear of dogs, so she can work in more houses. And I’ve had to deal with many fears myself including being able to present to more than 2 people!

When we do feel fear we are usually manifesting the fear in our minds.  Often by rapid negative self-talk.  Which leads to feeling unsure, not good enough, and then sometimes we experience physical reactions too like a rapid heartbeat, shaking and sweating. Not very helpful at all is it if you’re about to present?  But, we can change this.

Remember we feel our thinking.  So…

Change what you think and you can change how you feel.

Our brains don’t know the difference between a real or imagined experience.   Which can hinder us in many ways if we’re always thinking the worst, getting anxious or being harsh on ourselves.

Reframe! If our brains don’t know if it’s a real or imagined experience,  this can also be very helpful to us indeed.

For example, it means we can practise the art of presenting from our desks.  Of course we need good content but it’s usually thinking about presenting that puts most people off.

So, when you are running through your presentation from start to finish, imagine it all working out well. This will work wonders for your self-belief, confidence and your presentation.

Build your confidence by thinking it will work out, in your mind, see it all working out well.  Try it!  Take time to practise this.  Over and over again, so you’re building a new way of thinking instead and your fears will dissipate.

Today, I ask you, what would you do if you weren’t afraid ?

If you were a child again, would you really have those fears anyway?  No, I thought not.   Re-frame.  Think it will work well.

Go out there with a child-like fascination of the world and see things for the first time again. In all its wonder.  Play.

Be without fear, well, only the two you were born with!

To your success and happiness,

Jo James xx

P.S. Power Hours for Students

I did a brilliant Power Hour last week with a student who was getting so stressed about her exams, so her Mum called me to help. I am happy to report her Mum messaged me and said ‘the work you did with my daughter was tremendous. It’s given her a different perspective and she’s enjoying herself and her subjects. Brilliant. You’re an absolute star‘.
Do get in touch if you or a friend has someone studying at home and getting too stressed with it all. I’m here to help.

How You Can Make More Profit In 2019

While you’re having a look at your results, it’s also important to check the profit you’re making in your business.

Have you increased your profit this year?

More profit = more bonuses and dividends available to take as a Director and importantly, more money available to invest back into your business to keep it going in the right direction.

So, take some time to look at the profit you’ve made last year and what investments you made in your business that gave you the best return on your time and income.

You might be surprised!

What service or product has made you the most profit this year? Where can you attract more work like that? Do your marketing messages still support them? Check.

Also identify what services or products make you the least amount of profit based on the time or cost it takes to deliver them.

Why are you still offering those low-profit services? Do they lead into services later on in your client’s lifetime journey with you that do generate more profit? What tweaks can you make to make them more profitable? Is it time to have a closer look and make some changes?

Make sure YOU are profiting from all your hard work.

Many things will have gone up in price around you. Check you’re still not applying the same price points as you did a few years ago, or you might be in a situation where your profits will be considerably less or eroded completely.

Also note, are you doing work where you’re not making enough profit AND it’s draining your energy or taking up way too much time? Look at how you can change it this year. Highlight this now and consider what you can do for the better.

The more you track and understand your financial situation the more you know about your figures and where profit comes from, this will help you have a more profitable business.

Be mindful of how you can create a more profitable business in 2019.

If you need my help working this out,  contact me by email or give me a call on +44 (0) 7968 016585 to get advice and clarity today.

To your success and happiness.

Do your goals fit you?

As it’s goal setting season I thought I’d share with you some questions to ask yourself to make sure you really do want them and to help you make them more effective.  It takes time and your commitment to create new goals and habits for yourself.

So first, check you want it!

1. Check the goal is written as a positive statement and is specific.  The unconscious mind doesn’t hear negative commands, so change ‘I don’t want to be so unfit’ (as you’re only telling yourself that you want to be unfit!) to saying ‘you want to be fitter and be able to run 5K in 30 minutes by 30th March’. Or ‘you want to invoice £10K each month’.

2.  What will you gain by having this goal?

3. What resources have you already got to help you? and what extra resources do you need, if any?

4. How will you know you’re on track?  break down your goal into smaller chunks/targets or steps.  This really helps to make your goals more manageable and achievable.  You can then review and adjust your action plan along the way if necessary.

5.  Is it good for those around you too?  Think how this may affect your family, close friends or staff when you have your goal.

6.  Consider what will happen if you don’t achieve it.

– What won’t happen?

– What will you lose by having this goal? (maybe frustration and a lot of stress. What else? )

Do you still want it? Good. Just checking.

7.  Now imagine now already having achieved your goal.  – What will you look like?  Create a vivid picture of yourself.

– What do you hear and what are you saying to yourself?

– Feel how you will feel now that you have it.  Feels good doesn’t it?!

– What did you learn?

Allow all this new information to sink in for a few moments.  Keep breathing and smile!

The more we do something the easier it gets.  Repeat No. 7 regularly and strengthen that new neural pathway.  Set your own internal Sat Nav!

If you’re looking for more tips and ways to help you build your business and grow from strength to strength, sign up for my regular emails called Make Your Mondays Matter.  Delivered to your inbox on yep, you guessed it, Monday mornings. Join in.

WebSummit 2018 My Day 1 Report #ForTheWeb

The summit was focused on the future of the world wide web, data and security with passion and purpose to ensure a healthier, safer world online and here’s my first report for you.

The #WebSummit2018 kicked off with Timothy Berners-Lee, ‘the inventor of the World Wide Web’ – saying “We’ll soon be in a 50/50 moment. In May 2019 half the world will be online,  so the next step that’s needed is a Contract #ForTheWeb, where companies and governments will collaborate.

The Contract For The Web is a coming of age and will consist of 9 Principles.

People inside companies will have the attitude to do the right thing for the user and the world. GDPR has started this attitude of safeguarding people’s privacy, and we see it being used worldwide in time, and the new contract will be the next attitude to build. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Google has signed the contract for the web and is supporting the web foundation to protect the free and open web and France is the first country to sign it.

After 30 years of the WWW, it’s now the age of responsibility, to avoid the abuse, unfair business practices and secure online free speech.

It doesn’t have to be ad served, it goes back to values – encouraging those who build the web to work on a project and work as the user’s agent – writing code not to ‘distract’ the user.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead, generate value for the user – with no ads, no clickbait or stuff to distract the user’s experience.”  said Tim Berners-Lee.

Wow, wouldn’t that be wonderful?

To join in immediately and participate in making the web a better place for you and your customers,

your Action Point today is to take some time to reflect on these 2 questions to help shape your online brand.

What are the values that you will focus on in your business in 2019 and beyond?

How can you improve your customer’s experience online to match your values?

Not sure where to start? I’d love to help you identify and improve your customer’s journey too if you’d like my help, contact me today

The web summit continued for 3 days and I’ll share more with you in the next blog. Particularly the amazing interview we saw with the designer Alexander Wang and the surprising changes he’s made in his company to better serve his customers online and offline.

Your customer journey is, of course, off-line too!

Come and join us at my facilitated Networking evening, Contacts and Cocktails.

So we’re in September! August seems to have flown by doesn’t it? With schools back this week, many people will be back at their desks going through numerous emails and revisiting those they’ve saved ’til now.

Who have you met networking over summer that you’d love to catch up with again?  Who did you send designs, drafts or proposals to and you’re waiting to hear back from them?

I’ve been Making Your Mondays Matter for 7 years!

Wowzers! That’s the 358th time I’ve written to my VIP List of Brilliant Business Owners on a Monday morning with an Action Point! It’s 7 years today that I started writing newsletters with my sales tips and mindset shifts to give you and your business a boost on a Monday morning, called…

“Make Your Mondays Matter”

Make Your Mondays Matter, the title of the newsletters are written to help you get clarity on what to do next to help you build your relationships and ultimately to make more sales.

Feel energised to take action on Mondays to get more results by Friday!

Writing to you EVERY SINGLE MONDAY FOR 7 YEARS was a challenge and a commitment I decided to do to help business owners that were probably working by themselves, to give you clear action steps with sales tips that I’d learned work so well.  So at 10 am on a Monday morning, you feel supported, with a prompt and a nudge to get your week started.

It’s been hard work to do this every week and some weeks are definitely harder than others!!

I absolutely LOVE it when you’ve emailed me or caught up with me in London networking and told me you enjoyed the last newsletter, or that you keep my newsletters in a folder to refer to when you need it. It’s great to know I’m still helping you get results in your business, that I’m giving you a boost to your week, as I originally planned 7 years ago!

Your 2018 Goals

We’ve got a few months left to reach your 2018 goals and I’d love to help you smash yours too. So, get started on your list today, who said “Let’s talk when I get back in September?”
