Considering a home security camera system but don’t know where to begin? You’re probably wondering: What type of home security camera is right for me? How many security cameras should I install? Where is the best place to install home security cameras? Is it expensive to have security cameras installed by an alarm monitoring company?

Many home security providers offer free consultations, which is a great place to start. If you’re like most homeowners, however, you prefer to do some research ahead of time. Understanding your options can help you ask questions that are meaningful to your home, family, business, and lifestyle.

Choosing a Home Security Camera System

Rest assured, that an experienced home security consultant will know what questions to ask to help you choose the best home security and camera system. A security expert can also provide a helpful walkaround of your home or business to identify optimum areas for surveillance. Some great news? Costs for home security and cameras have come down considerably, while the technology has advanced. And, monthly alarm monitoring costs less than a dinner out for a family of four.

What Should I Consider When Choosing a Home Security Camera System?

Before we share information about your security camera options, let’s consider what questions you might have about installing a security camera. We recommend reviewing the following with a local home security provider, which will help determine security camera choices and areas to protect:

• Where do you store valuables that need to be protected by a security camera system?
• Do you have school-aged children or elderly parents?
• Do you have a sensitive area, such as a pool, gun safe or medicine cabinet?
• Would you like to know who stops by your property or when deliveries are made?
• Are there areas of your property that are hard to keep an eye on and allow entry?
• Do you want the convenience of mobile-app control, video viewing, and sharing?
• Would you like to record and store video from a security camera system?
• Would you like the added security of professional alarm monitoring and dispatchers?
• Do you want the flexibility of adding to your camera system in the future?
• Would you prefer alerts and notifications based on activity detected by your security cameras?

To help, we answered many of these questions here:

Tips and Questions When choosing the Best Home Security Cameras
Top 10 Ways Homeowners Use Home Security Cameras
Easily Protect Your Family, Property and Pets with Home Security Cameras

The Most Popular Home Security Camera Systems

With nearly 50 years of experience in the security industry, we’ve followed the rise in popularity of home security cameras. Homeowners who install security cameras state convenience, quality, and performance using an app as the most popular capabilities of today’s camera systems.

At Alert 360, we offer both dome security cameras and bullet security cameras. Our 2.8 dome camera specifically is a top choice with home security customers. Our doorbell camera also is a very popular home security camera option. Overall, most homeowners opt for a security camera system that covers a variety of video surveillance needs in and around their homes. By far, the benefits homeowners enjoy most are property protection and crime prevention. Burglars who notice a home is protected by monitored security cameras are more likely to move on to another target.

In addition, some of the coolest new features in home security camera systems that homeowners enjoy include:

• picture quality
• video storage capabilities
• ability to include numerous cameras
• more affordable security camera options
• indoor cameras with two-way voice
• DVR camera systems with multiple camera options and ability to add security cameras
• infrared, LED night vision so the camera works well even in low light
• video clips that help prevent crime or capture thieves

At Alert 360, our base security camera system comes with four camera capabilities. A base home security camera system like this allows a homeowner to start with two or three and add more cameras if needed. The ability to add on to a camera system is helpful for growing families or during different life stages. For example, if you welcome a new baby, help care for an aging parent or add a shop, garage or pool. Alert 360 can design a camera system with up to 16 cameras; or more for business applications.

Now that we know the most popular features in home security camera systems, let’s dig deeper and look at the options and benefits of dome and bullet cameras.

Home Security Dome Camera Features and Benefits

Dome security cameras are popular with both homeowners and business owners for a variety of reasons. These cameras are circular, with a dome shape, and are popular because they blend in well with their surroundings. They are not as easily knocked down or moved, which bullet cameras are more susceptible to.

Dome cameras provide some of the highest levels of video surveillance, along with the following benefits:

• vandal-resistant surveillance
• wide-angle viewing options
• zoom available within phone or tablet app
• indoor and outdoor use
• weatherproof
• night vision

Features and Benefits of Bullet-Style Security Cameras

Many homeowners invest in bullet security cameras, which appear more like a tube and are easily seen. The higher visibility of this style of security camera can also help to deter crime. These security cameras also can be used indoors or outdoors. The benefits that homeowners enjoy when installing bullet-style security cameras include:

• ease of install, repositioning and change of view
• long-range viewing options
• night vision up to 40 feet
• weatherproof
• live and recorded video can be viewed through our free mobile app
• instant alerts with smart clip capture
• HD quality, with crystal clear video
• ability to view multiple locations on the same screen

Home Security Features of a Doorbell Camera

The doorbell camera or video doorbell is certainly worth a mention. Many homeowners are familiar with doorbell cameras, which have seen a rise in popularity the past few years. Alert 360 home security systems include the doorbell option, which offers the following features:

• ability to see, hear and speak to visitors on a free Alert 360 app
• built-in motion sensor sends you alerts even if a visitor doesn’t press the doorbell button
• video recording so that you can review event history or take a photo of your visitors
• full-color HD, night vision
• motion sensor alerts
• weather and rain-proof
• high-resolution video
• zoom capability
• ability to adjust or turn off chime from our app if quiet is preferred in home

Things to Consider Before Installing DIY Security Cameras

A final consideration you might have is weighing the benefits of a professionally installed and monitored system versus a DIY security camera system. It’s worth noting that many home insurance providers offer a discount for a monitored camera system, and a security system can increase the value of your home.

There are other benefits to working with an experienced home security company. These companies provide years of investment and technology partners that design reliable cameras and cutting-edge services that last for the long haul. For more on this, check out our blog “Why that $79.95 Home Security DIY Camera may not be a Secure Purchase.”

We also recommend considering a combination of security cameras around your home. Installing multiple cameras, connected by a system that you can easily monitor, allows you to achieve more viewing options and angles. Working with professional designers and installers makes the job easier and comes with 24/7 alarm monitoring.

Since we last shared tips for securing your home while on vacation, options in home security have grown tremendously. Homeowners now have more choices – from more affordable security cameras to home automation with connected devices, such as sprinkler systems.

If you haven’t taken a summer trip already, you’re probably planning a family getaway. Whether your plans include a staycation or a cross-country trip, you’ll enjoy your time away more if your home is secure while sitting empty.

Increase Summertime Home Security with Home Automation

The basics in home security we shared previously are still critical tips. However, we’ve added some steps for increasing security using home automation or the latest in wireless security options. Tips and options for securing your home prior to and while on vacation include:

  • Home security cameras have become a critical component of most security systems, offering an affordable, easy way to keep an eye on home. If someone does enter your property uninvited, you have the option to receive an alert and video clip. You can even save the video clip and share it with authorities if needed. In general, a home security camera, combined with a monitored security yard sign, helps prevent a break-in.
  • Make your home appear occupied to deter a break-in. This is easy enough to do with a home automation system that you can remotely control. Use your home security system’s mobile app to turn lights and entertainment systems on or off. Set your home automation system to run your connected sprinklers at various times of the day or week.
  • Place a hold on your mail with the Post Office or have a trusted friend or neighbor pick up mail and deliveries. Using a video doorbell camera to know when a package arrives and alerting your friend if needed is another option.
  • Avoid parking your car in the driveway or have a friend move it occasionally. Also, do not store valuables or items, such as a garage door opener, in the vehicle.
  • At the least, install deadbolt locks on all exterior entrances, including those to the garage. Even better, consider smart locks that you can control via mobile app (in case someone needs in to check your property) and a handy doorbell camera. A doorbell camera will alert you when someone visits your front entrance and allows you to speak to them.
  • Illuminate your home with smart lighting, which you can control with a mobile security app. A well-lit property makes it easier to spot unwelcome visitors and makes your home less attractive to burglars.
  • It sounds obvious, but make sure all doors and windows are locked before you leave, including any upstairs.
  • Avoid hiding a spare key outside, which burglars know to look for. Consider keeping a spare with a trusted neighbor instead or installing keyless entry and smart locks.
  • Make sure your emergency contact list is up to date with your alarm monitoring center. Having a professionally monitored system allows you to relax, knowing emergency officials will be called in the event of a break-in, fire, or carbon monoxide emergency.
  • Include water detection devices with your security system so that you receive a notification if the water is detected inside. You also now have the option of temperature sensors that help protect sensitive valuables from extreme temperature changes. A thermostat that goes on the blink or flooding in your basement is an unwelcome surprise when you arrive home.
  • Tackle any yardwork that can increase security before you go. Trim hedges and branches that create hiding spots near your home or easy entry.
  • Make sure heat and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Better yet, install monitored detectors so emergency personnel are alerted when you’re not home or are unable to call for help. This is especially critical if older children or pets stay home.
  • Consider a smart thermostat that you can control via mobile app or set it and forget it. Controlling or setting the temperature based on your daily or travel schedule can help save on energy use and costs.

A Security System is Your Best Travel Companion

A monitored alarm system with home automation options provides tremendous peace of mind when you’re away. Today’s home security systems can pull double-duty and lend a hand through easy, remote control from an app. Let visitors in or out, turn lights on or off, ensure the garage door got closed, and check in via security cameras.

On a final note, if your home is monitored by a security system, it’s especially important to:

  • Test your system monthly to ensure it is working properly before an emergency occurs and especially before you hit the road;
  • Help prevent false alarms. Provide detailed instructions on the operation of your security system to anyone who has access to your home. Using a mobile app and home security cameras help too, allowing you to verify an emergency from your phone;
  • Have your security company provide a free consultation to ensure you have the latest features that offer the most convenience, security;
  • Check with your home insurance company to make sure you’re receiving potential discounts related to having a monitored alarm system; and
  • Remember your home security features allow you to leave your worries behind whether you’re at the office or on the beach.

Imagine: No more leaving home wondering if you left a door open or unlocked. No more worrying about an elderly cat or teenager you left overnight at home. Mobile app control provides assurance and convenience all summer long and year-round. Your security system will allow you to leave town worry-free, check in if needed, and return to a comfortable, safe home.

Home security systems with home automation capabilities, help control energy use, prevent property loss or damage and provide additional benefits to homeowners.

1) Use home automation to help reduce energy use and costs – Most home security and home automation systems include options for programmable, smart home thermostats and lighting. Use these features to create custom schedules for lighting and cooling over the summer. Or, use a mobile app to manage your smart thermostat and lighting while you’re away. For example, set your smart thermostat to use less energy while you’re sleeping or at work. Remotely turn off lights or other connected appliances if you accidentally left them on, etc.

2) Prevent property loss – This seems obvious, but there are substantial savings when preventing theft. Consider the money and time you might spend to replace even a few of your most valuable items or to repair damage to your home. In addition to preventing home break-ins, a home security system can help detect drastic temperature changes while you’re away and the presence of water in your home. Real-time alerts from your security app can alert you to environmental hazards that threaten your property and help you act faster to prevent loss.

3) Receive a potential discount on home insurance premiums – Most home insurance providers offer a discount on insurance premiums for a professionally monitored security system. Actual savings vary based on providers, but a potential discount on your home insurance premium can range between 5% to 15%. If you’re not already receiving a discount, ask your alarm system provider for proof of 24/7 alarm monitoring and contact your home insurance company.

4) Benefit from home security programs, such as insurance deductible reimbursement – For example, Alert 360 offers the highest insurance deductible reimbursement in the home security industry. This benefit provides reimbursement up to $1,360 to customers who suffer a loss due to burglary while being monitored. This reimbursement also applies if a customer suffers a loss during a fire and has a monitored smoke or high temperature/heat sensor. Some conditions apply.

“At Alert 360, we strive to provide security system products and home automation services that not only help protect properties but provide real savings too,” said Richard Ginsburg, president and CEO, Alert 360. “We encourage existing Alert 360 customers and anyone considering a home security system to work with a professional security consultant to review savings opportunities and the latest home automation technology available that can provide protection, convenience and value.”

In addition to free security consultations, Alert 360 offers a complete line of home security cameras, business security, energy management, and smart home automation services, including Alert 360 interactive wireless security, a free mobile app, smart home video, remote access, water detection devices, video doorbells, and 24/7 alarm monitoring. As an owner, you know you need a business security system. But how do you choose the best security system company? What should a business security system include? How much does a business security system cost? And what benefits can you expect from having a customized, monitored alarm system? In this first blog in our business security series, we’ll cover the basics of commercial security solutions.

What Should a Business Security System Include?

Most business security systems include a professionally installed and monitored security system. This system most likely will include access control, intrusion detection, energy management, business automation, video monitoring, and business reporting features. A professional alarm company and security expert can help design a security and automation system that’s right for your business. When installed, this system will help your business operate more efficiently and ensure your employees, inventory, and customers are safe.

Innovative Business Security Solutions that Work Double Duty

As a top security monitoring company, at Alert 360, we work with thousands of business owners to design custom security systems that work for their unique businesses. No matter what security solution you need for your workplace, the following business security options will go a long way in protecting your assets:

Remote system access – First things first: A business security system should make your life easier and secure your business. You’ll want a wireless, web-enabled security system for the most convenience. A security system you can access remotely, using a mobile app, allows you to stay in control of your business around the clock from almost anywhere.

With a robust, wireless security system and mobile app, you gain the ability to remotely arm/disarm your system. You can also view live and recorded video from your phone or tablet, receive real-time alerts, notifications and more. Our Alert 360 mobile app allows you to receive notifications when your system has been armed or disarmed. You also can use our security app to check the status of your security system from almost anywhere.

Working with a leading monitored security provider, a system can be developed that allows you to remotely manage multiple business locations from a single page on the app. You’ll be able to keep an eye on valuable inventory and equipment, control access, and provide a safe business environment. A security system, with remote access, provides valuable awareness and saves time, allowing you to focus on growing your business.

On-site access control – The ability to control and track access both remotely and on-site can provide valuable information about openings, closings, and personnel safety. Access control notifications can also alert you to unusual activity. Access control is a necessary component of any commercial security system.

Intrusion detection – A professionally monitored security system provides intrusion detection and so much more. Activated alarm sensors at your business can help protect vulnerable entry points, trigger an alarm with motion is detected or glass is shattered. Most systems also can be customized to send an email, text alert or push notification when an alarm sensor is activated. For example, you can receive helpful reminders and alerts when a door is left open or someone is entering or exiting your business at an unusual time.

Video surveillance – What’s better than seeing (and recording) what’s happening at your business when you’re away? Not only do security cameras and video surveillance help prevent crime and protect employees, but recorded video can also help in the event of an insurance claim or liability issue. Today’s high-tech smart security cameras provide crystal-clear, HD and night vision options that help you monitor activity inside and outside your business. Alert 360’s smart video also allows you to store and send video clips right from your phone. Check out our business video security section to learn more about the full capabilities of today’s security cameras.

24/7 security alarm monitoring – You’ll want to ensure you choose one of the best security systems, with professional alarm monitoring. Professional alarm monitoring provides experienced alarm dispatchers who can quickly contact emergency personnel or law enforcement if needed, around the clock. Knowing there’s someone there to help eliminates worry. In addition, often, insurance providers provide a discount to businesses with a professionally monitored alarm system. Look for a security company that owns its own monitoring center for the highest quality service and fastest dispatch times.

Security insight and reporting – At Alert 360, our business insight reporting provides critical and actionable data that help you make smarter decisions concerning staffing, business hours, energy use and more. When working with a security provider, ask for sample data and reports that you would receive. This will help ensure the insight provides easy-to-understand data and trends about your business. Helpful security data might include activity levels at your business, opening and closing times, inventory access specifications, peak periods of customer activity, traffic, and more. (You’ll also want to ensure the reporting will cover as many business locations as you need in one report or via a dashboard.)

Energy management options – Most leading security providers can design a system that connects your thermostats to your security system for smarter, responsive energy savings. A smart thermostat can send alerts when settings are changed or temperature exceeds a preset threshold, protecting valuable assets. Remote control of smart thermostats across multiple business locations is also an option.

Energy management and business automation system also provides helpful climate and ambiance control at your locations. You’ll be able to customize schedules and settings to create an ideal environment for customers and employees. You can also program a smart thermostat to automatically adjust when the last person leaves for the day or night.

Overall, smart thermostats help you save on business expenses without giving it much thought, even if someone forgets to turn off the AC or heating when closing for the day. You can also choose a lock-out feature so that others can’t adjust the thermostat.

Intelligent Lighting – To increase energy savings and employee safety, consider a security system that allows you to set schedules to control lighting. At Alert 360, our lighting rules allow you to turn selected lights on/off based on system triggers, such as when your security system is armed/disarmed or protected doors are opened/closed.

As part of your smart business security system, Geo-Services (or geo-fencing) add another layer of automation based on your location. Using your smartphone, Geo-Services know if you are arriving at or leaving the business, to open or close. Then, your system adjusts the thermostat and lighting automatically.
Environmental monitoring – Top-rated security companies provide detection for environmental issues that can damage property or inventory. In addition to extreme temperature fluctuations, you can include protection against water leaks or pooled water. An alarm monitoring center and your mobile app will provide critical notification of these hazards, saving inventory, equipment, and property.

Automate Business Security, Energy Management for Worry-Free Savings

As a business owner or manager, you have enough on your plate. You shouldn’t have to worry about security and processes you can automate. The right business security and automation system, along with a reputable monitored security provider, will help save you time, money and worry.

When comparing business security providers, look for top security companies in your area who can provide customized support, years of experience, and 5 Diamond 24/7 alarm monitoring. Business security systems have changed through the years and keep getting better. If it has been a while since you have upgraded, it is important to become knowledgeable about the improvements in commercial security.

An integrated home security system is one that uses a combination of security products such as glass break and window sensors, motion detectors, access control, home automation, security cameras, 24/7 alarm monitoring to decrease risk.

Security systems have evolved far beyond a simple door contact that detects intrusion. Home security options now include security cameras, doorbell cameras, cameras with two-way voice, smart lighting, energy management, and more. There’s also the option to control and monitor your home security or business security system using a mobile app. Working together, these components and others create an integrated home security system and increase benefits your whole family will enjoy.

An Integrated Security System Covers all your Bases

You’re probably familiar with how a basic home security system works. If someone enters through a protected entrance when your system is armed, your alarm system sounds and your alarm monitoring center receives a notification. An integrated home security system does so much more to protect your home and make your life easier. It includes devices that let you view areas of your home and receive important notifications that you set, such as when a child arrives home. There are options to add home automation devices, lights, locks and more. With today’s integrated home security systems, you also gain the ability to remotely control and easily monitor your system from your smartphone. Beyond the basic system components, the following security system devices work double-duty protecting home, family or business:

Home security cameras – Home security cameras eliminate guessing and enhance your ability to know what’s happening when you’re away. Today’s security camera systems include HD, indoor/outdoor options that also record footage and send video clips directly to you. Home security cameras go a long way in preventing crime. Security camera recordings and clips are handy if a crime has been committed.

A video doorbell camera – A front porch doorbell camera alerts you when someone approaches your door. Then, using a handy app, you can see and talk to anyone who stops by. If it appears the visitor has ill intentions, such as stealing a package, you’ll be able to quickly notify authorities. The doorbell camera and other security cameras on your property can also capture helpful images.

Smart lighting – A basic security system, including a yard sign that proves your home is monitored, helps prevent a home break-in. An integrated security system, with smart lighting you also control via mobile app, can increase your home’s overall security. Turn lights on or off remotely so that your home appears occupied. Or, adjust lighting before you arrive home so you enjoy a safe entry.

Smart keyless locks – It happens. Someone forgets to lock a door in the hurry to work or school. Or, a teen forgets his or her key. Including smart locks as part of your automated home and security system adds welcome convenience. Lock or unlock doors for family members or check to make sure your home is secure – all using a mobile app.

Monitored heat and carbon monoxide detection – These detectors are no brainers. An early alert to smoke, heat or dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are critical to saving lives. Also, monitored detectors ensure that proper emergency personnel are alerted even if you can’t get to the phone or aren’t home, saving family, property, and pets.

Water and temperature change detection – These security system options are especially handy if you travel often, have a second home or items that can be damaged by water or extreme temperature changes. It’s easy enough to add these to your home security system and enjoy the same 24/7 monitoring and convenient alerts that help save valuable time and property.

Mobile app control – The ability to control, monitor, and view home security and automated devices from almost anywhere delivers awareness and true peace of mind. A home security system with a mobile app option provides these benefits. And, you can enjoy this control from your office, a vacation spot, or even within your own home. A home security mobile app will often let you adjust everything from your alarm system and lighting to your smart thermostat, locks and more.

Add Home Automation to Your Home Security System

On top of the above security features, you can include home automation features and connected devices such as sprinkler systems, sound systems, Amazon Echo, Google Home, and others. Together, a security system with home automation features boosts your ability to care for and protect your home and adds convenience to your life.

If you already have a home security system, you’re in a good position to beef up safety with integrated security devices. These components create a multi-layered system that goes beyond basic home security and creates a total smart, connected, secure home. With professional, around-the-clock monitoring also on your side, you can rest easy, knowing your family and property are safer. Smart lighting, with Home Automation, Helps Lower Electric Bills, Increase Home Security

If you already have a home security system, including home automation, you easily can make minor adjustments to save money. Even without these services in place, there are several steps you can take to reduce energy use around the home.

It seems we’re all paying more than ever before for goods and services, including energy. One way to save on energy bills is by taking a proactive stance to manage your home’s lighting. The good news is you don’t need to sacrifice comfort or safety, and your home automation system can lend a hand.

According to the Department of Energy, an average household spends about five percent of its energy budget on lighting. Also, according to the Department of Energy, it’s easy enough to light your home using the same amount of light for less money. Switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the quickest ways to cut energy costs. Smart lighting can also greatly enhance your home security efforts. Below, we’ll cover ways you can automate your lighting or use an app to control lights at home. These features help light the way when you get home late and deter crime, creating the appearance that someone is home.

Here are five lighting or home automation tips that help lower electric bills while also keeping your family safe:

1. Take a close look at your lightbulbs. Here’s an eye-opening fact: 90 percent of the energy given off by traditional incandescent lightbulbs is heat. That should motivate you to take a look at the bulbs in your home today.

For example, we now know that Z-Wave Dimmable LED Standard Light Bulbs are more energy efficient while still emitting the same amount of light. Switching to these spiral-shaped bulbs really does help save energy in your home. In addition, LED bulbs can last up to 10 times longer than standard light bulbs. At Alert 360, we help connect Z-Wave bulbs to your home security and automation system giving you lighting control using an app.

There are other lighting options available in addition to LED, so let’s break it down. Today’s most often used light bulbs options include halogen, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). CFL and LED lighting options can initially cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs. However, during their lifetime, they use less energy, which saves you money. (For the greatest energy savings, choose bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR® rating. An ENERGY STAR label ensures that the product has been independently certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to deliver quality, performance, and savings.)

As we shared above, traditional incandescent bulbs use a lot of energy to produce light. They also are no longer manufactured. Newer energy-saving lightbulbs provide plenty of choices in colors and lighting levels. The new lights are also much more energy-efficient, so they save you money. But what’s the difference in all the newer lightbulb options?

Choosing Smarter, Energy-Efficient Lighting:

Halogen lights are available in a wide range of shapes and colors, and they can be used with dimmers. While halogen lights can be bright, they also use more energy and burn hotter. There are other, more efficient options to meet your lighting needs.

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are curly versions of the long, tube fluorescent lights you may already have in a basement or garage. Because they use less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs, CFLs often pay for themselves in about nine months. Then, they save you additional money each month after that. An ENERGY STAR-qualified CFL uses about one-fourth the energy. It also lasts 10 times longer than a traditional incandescent bulb that emits the same amount of light. CFL bulbs are available in a range of colors, including warm tones.

Please note that fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and should be recycled at the end of their lifespan.

LEDs are one of today’s most energy-efficient lighting options. ENERGY STAR-qualified LEDs use approximately 20 percent to 25 percent of the energy and last 15 to 25 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs. Compared to halogens, LEDs use approximately 25 percent to 30 percent of the energy and last 8 to 25 times longer.

LED bulbs are available as replacements for 40W, 60W, and 75W traditional incandescent bulbs. They come in a variety of colors and are available in a dimmable option. LEDs perform well indoors and outdoors because of their durability in cold environments. Solar-powered, LED outdoor lighting is also available. LEDs are more expensive, but they can still save you money because they last longer and use less energy.

Another note: With all lightbulbs, we recommend that you check the packaging when looking for a dimmable bulb. Not all bulbs offer this option.
Now that we understand the options available in lightbulbs, we can move on to additional, money-savings lighting tips.

2. Replace halogen bulbs. As we stated above, halogen light bulbs are so hot that they can actually become a fire hazard. The bright light they give off easily can be replicated with safer, more energy-efficient CFL bulbs.

3. Don’t forget your outdoor home automation lighting! At Alert 360, for added security, we recommend motion detection lights outside. And for reducing energy use, motion-sensing lights are a great alternative to leaving a porch light burning all night, zapping energy and spiking your electric bill. Motion sensor lights only come on when someone drives or walks up near the home. These lights perform double duty by scaring off intruders and using less energy. In addition, using CFLs or LED bulbs in any outdoor light fixtures, such as floodlights, will save energy.

4. Consider longer, tube fluorescent lighting in some areas. Fluorescent lights are making a comeback in some areas of the home, such as playrooms and garages. These energy-efficient lighting solutions make sense for certain places because they use less heat than incandescent bulbs. Experts estimate they can be four to six times more energy efficient than standard light bulbs.

5. Consider easy-to-install home automation products. With our home automation solutions, you can program your lights to turn on and off at the times you determine. Or, you can control lighting remotely from your smartphone. Energy experts agree that installing home automation options can be an easy and smart way to lower your energy bills. (In addition to smarter lighting, Alert 360’s smart thermostat can also save you some serious money.)

There you have it: Five ways to reduce energy costs and increase your home’s security by managing the lighting in your home more efficiently.

While millions of homeowners have enjoyed security systems for decades, we’re now seeing a related, popularity rise in home automation. It saves money! Technology has made home automation more accessible than ever, allowing more homeowners to enjoy the convenience and money-saving features of modernizing a home. Like a home security system, with time, a home automation system pays for itself.

Today’s alarm systems include more complex technology behind the scenes but remain simple in the ways they help save money. Home security systems have advanced to include remote control via a mobile app. They also now include home automation features that allow more control over your home’s environment, security and energy use.

The bottom line: Home automation products and security services can make your life easier and more secure. Home automation systems turn your home into a smart home and create real convenience and savings. Fortunately, with a home security provider on your side, it’s easy to add automation to your home.

Most home automation solutions are wireless, making non-intrusive. But, what does home automation include and what can you expect to gain? Home automation systems include smart thermostats, Z-Wave dimmable LED light bulbs, key-free Z-wave deadbolt locks, smart garage door openers and much more. We also offer professional installation or integration of connected devices. Such as sprinkler systems, sound systems, Amazon Echo, Google Home, doorbell cameras, and more. Overall, these devices give you more control over energy use in your home all year-round. Home automation, along with devices such as security cameras, connect you to home and help increase awareness and family safety.

Can a home automation system really save you money? There are multiple ways home automation can reduce the strain on your family budget. At Alert 360, we help homeowners install home automation systems that allow you to:

Set a smart schedule with specific lighting controls – Chances are, your house sits empty for most of the day. With home automation, automated lighting systems can dim lights throughout the day, depending on your schedule, saving as much as an estimated $20-$30 per month.

Remotely turning off lights – Many homeowners use home automation systems to turn off lights when there’s no one home, if they forgot when leaving. Our Z-Wave lighting can be controlled with a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer, easily helping to reduce energy use.

Use keyless entry and remote locking/unlocking – Our Z-Wave key-free deadbolt lock allows you to lock/unlock your door by entering your pin code on its keypad. You can also control the lock through a Z-Wave smart home or our mobile app.

Customize home automation “scenes” to control lighting, locks and more – Advanced home security and home automation systems include the ability to set custom “scenes.” This makes saving energy and securing your home as easy as a press of a button. For example, Alert 360 provides preset Scenes that include Home, Away, Sleep, and Wake Up. However, you’re free to set Scenes that make sense to you, such as Movie Night, Vacation, After School, or Weekend. Leaving home? Tap the ‘Away’ button and your security system arms, front door locks, and lights and thermostat adjust to save energy. At bedtime, tap ‘Sleep’ to turn down your lights and thermostat and secure your home.

Smart thermostats allow you to track energy use and adjust as needed. With more knowledge and automated control, you can easily customize your smart thermostat to fit your lifestyle and routine. Automating your home’s temperature can help reduce overall energy use and costs.

Secure your garage with a connected opener – It’s one of the most often used entry points by family members … and thieves. With an automated garage door, you’ll gain more control and awareness, using our convenient mobile app. You’ll know when family members or friends enter and exit the garage. You can remotely open the garage for friends, a dog walker, housecleaner, or repairman. Most important, never wonder again if the garage door was left open. Keeping a close tab on this entry point helps prevent break-ins, theft, and property damage. Having a connected garage door that you control via an app makes life easier.

Receive a discount on your home insurance premium! Don’t forget that most insurance providers offer a discount for a monitored security system, with or without home automation.

Benefit from an insurance deductible reimbursement program. Some home security system installers and alarm monitoring companies offer to reimburse your insurance deductible following a loss. Details and conditions apply, so be sure to check with your provider. At Alert 360, we take protecting our customers’ homes to heart and offers one of the highest deductible reimbursement in the industry.

With a home automation system, small steps can add up to meaningful monthly savings on household expenses. This savings is in addition to the added benefits of automated convenience and comfort. Set lights to come on and the temperature to adjust before your scheduled arrival so that you’re safe and comfortable after a day away.

Home Automation Combined with a Security System: Automate your Peace of Mind

In short, home automation, combined with a home security system help protect your property and wallet. If you already enjoy a home security system, consider adding home automation features. If you’re shopping for home security for the first time, remember these additional benefits of having alarm monitoring services on your side:

• Monitored home security systems automatically alert the local police in the case of a break-in;
• Home alarm systems also can detect smoke or dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and automatically alert the fire department;
• Door sensors and security alerts help protect sensitive areas when you can’t be home;
• Features such as doorbell cameras keep you connected to home, family; and
• Security cameras discourage crime and track unusual activities on your property.

Technological advances in security systems make these services an invaluable part of your home and provide significant savings, convenience. The benefits above only touch on the many features a home security system, with home automation, provides.
