Back for its sixth season, the "Pondcast" is a weekly American soccer podcast from the website Wrong Side of the Pond. Listen in to hear D.J. and Jeremy discuss the happenings on both sides of the pond, from the lower tiers of America's soccer pyramid to the heights of Europe's elite leagues.
Despite picking up a nasty bug while in Chicago over the weekend, we managed to hold Jeremy to his weekly podcasting duties and pump out this week’s show — from an isolation chamber in his basement anyway. But even with great distance between them, the guys managed to rundown another big weekend of soccer on both sides of the pond on this week’s show. That includes taking a gander at what could have been in the Manchester Derby, digesting another slate of midweek Champions League matches, reflecting upon an exciting weekend of MLS playoff action, not making light of Louisville City adding a second star to their crest, and doing the opposite with regards to FC Cincinnati’s newly unveiled one. Suffice to say it’s a good one, even if it sounds a little like Jeremy lives inside an AM radio.
One of the legends of the game’s recent era will call time on his days as a professional footballer this weekend in Louisville, Kentucky. Just the way he pictured it as a child in the Ivory Coast, Didier Drogba will look to cap off his glittering career by leading his Phoenix Rising FC to an upset victory over defending champions and hosts Louisville City. And the guys tackled that very topic in this week’s show. But before that, we did our normal rundown of the weekend’s Premier League play. Afterward that, we moved on to the MLS playoff picture before providing some hot-takery on the proposed European Super League. And you can get it now in the normal spots!
Last weekend’s domestic action takes center stage on this week’s episode of the #Pondcast, as D.J. and Jeremy dissect MLS Decision Day results and look ahead at the resulting MLS Cup Playoff matchups coming at us starting this week. We also devoted a sizable portion of the show to looking back at FC Cincinnati’s now-completed spell in USL, including sharing some of our listeners’ favorite memories from the club’s meteoric first three seasons. And even with all of that in there, we still made time to review last week’s Champions League action and the weekend’s Premier League fixtures.
Here at Wrong Side of the Pond, we’ve been known to take the international breaks off. That’s almost always the case during breaks without any meaningful matches for the US Men’s National Team, which was very much the case this time around, too. But this was no normal international break. First, the USMNT’s failure to qualify for the World Cup has hoisted every match they’ve played under the microscope, and last week’s match against Colombia certainly provided another opportunity for everyone to micro-scrutinize through the lens of their overly high expectations. From there, we shift the conversation to monumental events that transpired in Columbus last week. And to aid in that process, we welcomed back Aces Radio host and Save the Crew leader Morgan Hughes to the show.
Two defeats in a week would be bad enough for Manchester United’s José Mourinho, but falling to a Championship side managed by one of your former proteges and following that up with a loss to the most chaotic club in your own division certainly makes the two losses sting a little bit more. And since Jeremy enjoys giving his former savior grief, we gladly beat the dead horse on this week’s show before offering up suggestions on how chairman Ed Woodward should handle the matter. Listen in too for thoughts Klopp vs Sarri, the fast-approaching MLS playoffs, FIFA’s bungling of their annual awards, and the USL’s recent brand overhaul.
