Today marks the Year of the Pig and we’re celebrating more than just the Lunar New Year.
Written by Bijan in Music | 05/02/2019
What do you know about the Year of the Pig? People born on this year have the lucky numbers, 2, 5 and 8; and lucky colours include yellow, grey, gold and brown. However, something more significant is the type of pig – Earth Pig! With one of their characteristics compatible with a strong sense of time keeping, we are reminiscing on our favorite Chinese-themed tracks of the last decade.
Autumn Leaves – Chris Brown ft. Kendrick Lamar
Chris Brown - Autumn Leaves (Official Music Video) (Explicit) ft. Kendrick Lamar - YouTube
Fresh out of his sixth studio album, Chris Brown teams up with Kendrick Lamar for this oriental-themed track. Breezy’s smooth vocals lead this melancholic tune up to the highly anticipated verse of K.Dot – and it doesn’t disappoint!
Stir Fry – Migos
Migos - Stir Fry (Official) - YouTube
Not only did this track lead the NBA All-star weekend, but it also featured in their award-winning studio album, Culture II. The tune – and certainly it’s video – make you feel like your watching Rush Hour again, thanks to the brilliant mix of American and Chinese culture. I mean, who doesn’t want to see the Migos performing Kung-Fu!
Outside – The Weeknd
The Weeknd - Outside - YouTube
Outside is a track with an Eastern-aesthetic beat crafted by Canadian producer, Illangelo, and released by The Weeknd; but prior to his more established music. The track belongs to the Echoes of Silence mix-tape which was released in 2011. Although it’s 8 years old, Outside still holds that enchanting atmosphere to it, which of course, is accompanied by delicate vocals and interesting metaphors – something to ease your stomach as you enter the Year of the Pig.
These are undoubtedly ones to have on repeat. Though, do let us know if any other Chinese-themed tunes should’ve mad the list.
Rapman has recently released an intense and gritty second part, to his already successful ‘Shiro’s story’. This video is currently sitting at 2.3m views in just 2 months. Showing how important and sensational this project is. I believe everyone needs to watch it.
This story follows the life of a young Londoner called Shiro. The project highlights the life of young people in the modern age, and the pressures which surround their lives. Illustrating how through the pursuit of family life, it can lead to bad things happening, despite good intentions. In such a short video through the narrator, the actors and the direction. You become emotionally invested and feel at one with the characters and their struggles. Both parts as powerful as each other.

The Weeknd’s partners, Belly and 88Glam head down to London for a great live show
Written by Eugene in Music | 3rd June 2018
When we learnt that tickets to see Belly perform live, alongside his XO comrades, 88Glam for only £15, it was simply child’s play to get the event locked in our schedule as a midweek motive.
A Live Show with a Vibe Accountable for all Hip Hop Fan’s Expectations
The live show was set in the underground floor of one of Shoredich’s most known nightclubs, XOYO. Inside, the atmosphere was just right where the crowd was ready for an uplifting experience listening to an arsenal of the XO record label’s most eloquent and upbeat music. Might not; Consuela; Mumble Rap; & Immigration to the trap were only a handful of tracks that Belly performed on the night – or for those who don’t know, the show was full of tracks which the whole room was more than well acquainted with.
You’ll Like This Part…
During the show, only three things were thrown off the stage. A signed t-shirt with Belly’s and both of 88Glam’s signatures; a sweaty hand towel used by the rapper himself; and Camino (1/2 of the 88Glam Duo) who bought himself to jumping into the crowd towards the end of the show. The funny thing was, is that the three of us who went up to the show together ended up catching all three!
The event came a few days before Belly is set to perform on the main stage at Wireless Festival on Saturday the 7th July, where although 88Glam don’t seem to be amongst the Finsbury Park Lineup, they may appear alongside the also Canadian rapper during a potential surprise performance.

This year, so far has succeeded in providing us with impressive music in the Hip-Hop and R&B scene. Not only has there been a clear emergence of talent, but the quality and innovation put into albums is evolving.
In a world where the expected – and certainly repetitiveness – is frowned upon by the sophisticated listener, artists and producers are becoming more obliged to incorporate a degree of distinctiveness amidst their projects. Hence, you may recall a rise in double-albums, shorter projects and even a sequence of planned releases over time.
One of the most anticipated albums of 2018, Drake’s double-sided project, Scorpion has proven to hold its own style of innovation. With ‘A Side’ dedicated to Drizzy’s Rap abilities, and ‘B side’ focusing on R&B, the Toronto artist is indeed killing two birds with one stone (pun slightly intended). Scorpion managed to shatter Spotify’s one-day global record with a whopping 132,450,203 streams; while it smashed Apple Music’s single-day record with 170 million streams. These are huge numbers, and to put them in perspective, Drizzy’s More Life album received 89.9 million streams on its first day in the Apple Music database. Could this be a sign that innovative albums win? Perhaps.

Innovation isn’t the sole ingredient
Interestingly, innovation can take different shapes, sizes and angles when it comes to albums; as young New York rapper, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie evidences in his latest project. International Artist, just like its name, incorporates a global element to its track-list and features. This seemed like an excellent idea; especially as the FIFA World Cup had just commenced. However, the album sadly received negative reviews and opinions from A Boogies fans. Though, the reason for its disappointment was tilting towards the quality and flow of his work. This could suggest that innovation isn’t the sole ingredient to a successful album release; but an important, if not crucial component to attracting listeners.
Examples of Innovative Albums
There have been several unique releases this year:
We expect future releases to carry on this trend of innovation, and it will be exciting to see where artists take their ideas. Here at Vibestyle blog, we are all about new ideas and innovation; so keep your eyes peeled for new posts on similar topics.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s International Artist album exceeds innovation but underwhelms fans
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie returns to the spotlight with his latest 8-track EP; and this time its at a worldwide scale, featuring talent from across the globe. The 22-year-old artist had released his last project, The Bigger Artist in 2017, which would take its position among the US Billboard 200. In relation to the ’17 success, it will be interesting to see how his new album performs statistically. However, it appears that his fans aren’t entirely impressed with the EP; as people take to Twitter to express their opinions:
international artist was so bad i think im gonna be sick, a boogie producers must hate him if they actually sat there and let him think that was good pic.twitter.com/qb5JD7CqZn
When A Boogie’ named his EP, he wasn’t lying – there are artists from all across the globe. We have DaVido from Nigeria, Jamaica’s Alkaline, Kojo Funds from Britain, Canada’s Tory Lanez, NAV and Jessie Reyez; among others.
Previously released tracks Way Too Fly and Best Friend feature in the album, which pose as the most popular songs among the criticized album.
A Boogies’ International Artist album unfortunately possesses more cons than pros. The young artist’s innovative idea of sourcing international talent to create the theme of this album was actually a great idea; however, it almost feels that the release was rushed – something that the New York artist should learn from.
The best tracks of the album have to be Way Too Fly ft. DaVido and Best Friend ft. Tory Lanez. Not only were these tracks released prior to the album release, but they flow much better than the others. Perhaps these tracks raised the bar too high for A Boogies’ EP. Instead, he could’ve reserved some of this quality for the release.

Escobar Season has returned and Nas proves he’s still the King of Hip-Hop
Its been six years since Nas released his Life is Good album, but now the king returns for his 7-track album; featuring the likes of Kanye West, Puff Daddy, The-Dream and more. Posing as his 11th studio album, Nas seizes the opportunity to address the issues facing African-American’s; and in profound steez.
The New York rapper unleashed his latest project (15th June) and quite clearly impressed fans with his talents among the verses. He even says it himself:
Before you all congratulate Nas for #Nasir just think about how scary Kanye's abilities as a producer really is. He's 4/4 so far. That's 28 incredible beats, each album a different wavelength of sounds.
If you’re a Nas fan – or Hip Hop for that matter you will be far from disappointed with his album. While the 7-song track list may be considered brief, it well and truly suffices through Nas’ well rounded eloquence, and concise lyrics that truly paint a picture for the many messages the artist wants to convey.
What we find particularly interesting about the Queens-born-and-raised rapper’s album is a theory the arises subsequent to yet another Kanye tweet, where he delves in on the Urban Dictionary’s definition of the Seven Deadly Sins, signalling that each of the 7 tracks in the album represent a sin, as seen below.
Not For Radio – Pride
Cops Shot the Kid – Wrath
White Label – Gluttony
Bonjour – Lust
Everything – Greed
Adam and Eve – Sloth
Simple Things – Envy
Although these capital vices aren’t in line with their biblical order, each track correlates to the aligned deadly sin. As fans, we were no strangers to curiosity towards why Ye decided to provide only 7 tracks in each of the hand-produced albums of June, however this theory may be the answer we’ve been looking for. Let us know what you think about the whole idea in the comments section, or on social media.

R&B’s next up, Jacquees comes through with 4275 Album and its far better than we anticipated
The long wait is finally over for Jacquees fans, as the Atlanta artist releases his first studio album. The project features only the best from its genre; including Trey Songz and Chris Brown; along with R&B veterans, Donell Jones, Jermain Dupri and Jagged Edge.
We featured 4275 among our Top upcoming Hip Hop and R&B albums of 2018 and rightfully so. The track list alone proves to reap quality through its veins; and by boating a fruitful 18 songs , it isn’t going to get old – even with the record on repeat.
Listen to 4275
For those craving for a new R&B album, 4275 undoubtedly exceeds all elements of its genre; from Quee’s free-flowing vocals to a track-list with full of meaning, the emerging artist has certainly introduced himself in flying fashion.
While there have been some terrific involvement from big names, including 23 being produced by Donell Jones, the album unfortunately doesn’t feature the Gemini artist – something which we were looking forward. However, the respective track definitely inherits the legends finest work; giving the diluting genre of R&B a sense of nostalgia and perhaps direction for the future generation.
Our favorite track has to be All My Life featuring C Breezy, which reflects similarities of Brown’s recent work in Heartbreak on A Full Moon, with slick track, Sensei. Not only that, but Jacquees and Chris Brown are expected to release their collaborative project this year or the next – one to look forward to for sure.

Mr. West has kept his word in the release of the three hottest albums of June so far, with Pusha T’s album, Daytona which was released on the 25th of May; Ye, the self titled album which was released on the 1st of June; and last but not least, Kids See Ghosts, a joint collaboration album with Kid Cudi that only became available last Friday!
The albums each come from a wider body of work from Kanye West, under his record label, G.O.O.D. Music, where his presence is felt through the track production, commentary, and of course the writing of the majority of the lyrics.
Being an avid Twitter warrior, Kanye has been continuously expressing his ideas, no matter how bizarre or relatable they are, but amongst the random tweets, Ye has made promises of the upcoming work he is undertaking, just in time for this month. The wider body of work, or as Ye would claim, his vision, simply doesn’t stop here, not at all. Hip-hop fans will be ecstatic to hear that next Friday (15th), rap’s rightfully respected Nas will have his very own Kanye-produced album, as well as Teyana Taylor receiving the same special service from Ye the week after (22nd).
Each of Kanye’s hand produced albums are appearing to consist of only 7 tracks, something that Pusha-T wasn’t initially pleased about, but has subsequently come to accept the wishes of Kanye, especially after the success that Daytona has gotten.
In each of the albums that are out already, its evident that Kanye West is utilising the opportunity to express himself, educate others on his situation (plus his bipolar disorder, labelling it as his superpower), and most importantly for himself, to convey his opinions to the masses.
Why only 7 tracks?
As to why G.O.O.D. Music have decided to host 7-track albums, that’s unknown – however after the Daytona listening party, King Push claims that die to the anarchic nature of the music label, Pusha expressed, “you know G.O.O.D. Music anti-everything. If everybody going for 18 tracks, we doing seven”. A perfect demonstration of a record label who goes against the grain to provide something innovative and refreshing for us listeners.

London’s very own version of Bad Boys: Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters team up for action/crime TV Series, Bulletproof
While both Clarke and Walters are known to play outside-the-law roles; with the Kidulthood to Adulthood film series and Top Boy, the two British actors squad up as cops to pursue hardened criminals in London’s East End. Just like the popular Bad Boys movies, characters Bishop and Pike are not just partners, but best friends – causing some expected complications around work. This adds an element of comedy to the series; again, alike Will Smith and Martin Laurence’s roles in Bad Boys.
Without spoiling the 6 episode TV series, Bulletproof is full of crime, cars and comedy – the perfect combination for its kind! However, where it doesn’t lack in action, you could argue its shyness of episodes. Us at Vibestyle are hoping to see more series in the future; and with its success so far, perhaps the future will offer us longer series, with an increased budget.
Bulletproof 2018 trailer
Bulletproof: Coming Soon! - YouTube
Bulletproof is a Sky Original production; so it can be watched through Sky of course. However, once every episode has been aired, it should be available elsewhere.
To conclude our opinion of Clarke and Walters’ Bulletproof, it stands strong in its uniqueness towards other crime/action series, as most productions in this genre fail to position themselves as different – they always share a similar narrative. Bulletproof on the other hand, offers viewers a refreshing aspect of cast, especially considering the duos former roles. However, the series is extremely short; leaving some viewers “unengaged” or unsatisfied. Therefore, the Crime Series will receive a rightful 7/10.
