Pick Ups, Monster Hunter, Pop Punk & Christmas

On this week's Live Lesson, the guys unveil their second songs from the song writing challenge. But first, they answer a few questions about pickups. Aldrine kicks off the song writing showcase with his Monster Hunter inspired instrumental. Kahai follows with his pop punk / Nintendo-esque song baby. And Aaron brings it home with his oh-so-sweet "sad Christmas song". Each of them explain their song writing process and musical choices. They wrap up the lesson by setting up the rules for the next challenge.

Learn to play an easy version of "Mele Kalikimaka" on the Ukulele

On this lesson of Songs Made Easy, Aldrine teaches you how to play "Mele Kalikimaka". This version of the song uses 5 chords in a somewhat lengthy chord progression. The good news is, that's all there is to the song. Learn that one chord progression, and you've learned the whole song.

If you want to try a more challenging version of Mele Kalikimaka check out our Uke Lesson. It's a beginner lesson in the same key of G, and Aldrine uses the exact same chords. He does teach you a bouncier strumming pattern, as well as a melody picking solo.

Music Theory and History with Mike

On this week's Live Lesson, Magic Mike returns for our monthly dose of music theory. The guys end up spending the majority of the lesson discussing unconventional choices in music. First up, Mike explains some chord choices in a particular song that aren't in the song's key. He detours with a bit of music history, and explains the evolving acceptance of various sounds (E.g. the Devil's Chord). The guys also discuss unorthodox bands and musicians who push the boundaries in music. Lastly, they circle back to music theory and discuss its relationship to actually playing music.

This time on Songs Made Easy, Aldrine teaches you how to play "Guava Jelly" by Bob Marley. The original recording of this song was done in the key of C but for this lesson, Aldrine uses the key of A. He shows you the 4 chords, as well as a really simple strum pattern.

If you want to learn Aldrine's original take on this song, check out our Guava Jelly Uke Lesson. It's a beginner lesson in the key of G. Aldrine uses some chord inversions with the Bb chord shape, as well as a reggae strum pattern. He also teaches you a little picking riff that mimics the original recording.

The Results of the Challenge

On this week's Live Lesson, the guys regroup to unveil their original songs from last lesson's song writing challenge. Before the big reveal, Aldrine answers a few questions about different variables that can affect the sound of your ukulele. First up to bat, Aldrine performs his original song and explains some of the choices he made when creating it. Next up, Aaron (the Voice) lives up to his nickname when he presents his lyrical masterpiece. Kahai (the man behind the challenge itself) brings it all home when he plays his not-so-original song, followed by his actual original piece. The guys wrap things up by setting the stage for the next challenge, answering a quick question about amps, and talking about a new challenge centered show on UU.
