The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Don’t Buy it Just Because it’s on Sale

I have a rule about sales and it’s true for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale too. If you wouldn’t buy it at full price than don’t buy it on sale. For real. I can’t tell you how many peoples closets I’ve been in where there are clothes hanging with a tag still on them (like they’ve NEVER BEEN WORN!!) because “it was on sale”.

Bottom line, it’s not a deal if you’re not going to wear it or use it.

The great part about buying it from Nordstrom is that they pride themselves on customer service and have a very generous return policy. So, if you decide you don’t really like it, with Nordstrom, you can always return it.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and The Don’t Waste Your Time

Last week I took a stock room tour of the pieces our Cleveland Nordstrom store received for the BIG Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I scoped out what looked appealing and also what felt like it was well made and soft ( I am all about comfort). And earlier this week I did a quick try-on session at our local store.

Because Cleveland is a smaller market, our store only received a fraction of what is available online. But that being said, there are some lovely pieces to be found in-person and then waaaay more online.

This post is going to focus on the items I tried on in-store so I can tell you how they run (small, large, or true to size TTS). I find that helpful because when you’re ordering online you don’t necessarily want to order multiples of sizes if you don’t have to. And with this sale things sell out fast – what’s the saying – the early bird catches the worm…

Sold Out? Just Wait…

Things might say they’re sold out. BUT Nordstrom restocks this sale regularly. AND a ton of people buy and return. So don’t get freaked out. Just check back and even check back after the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is over. Pieces get returned all the time, especially as it gets closer to fall.

The Winners

These are the items I tried and really liked.

What to PASS on

Part of my mission in saving you time and money (and stress) when shopping and getting dressed, is to tell you about the bad finds, the misses, the that looks/feels awful, as well as the good, OMG pieces. Now, most of the time I’m a believer in the if you don’t have something nice to say philosophy. But in this instance, I feel like there were some items that looked fab online but in person were less than impressive. So let my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale fails, be your win in saving you the hassle of returns and disappointment.

Do not get this dress! It is totally see thru and super tight. I even tried sizing up. It felt like I was wearing orange/nudish LEGG pantyhose as a wannabe dress.

Nordstrom Sale – What to Get

I LOOOVE that you guys gave me ideas on IG as to what you wanted to see from the big old Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. And as I said over on stories, I have a bit of #NSale fatigue this year. And it seems about half of you do too.

It may just be that I have summer brain (aka vacation) and a bit there is so much noise out there regarding this sale (sensory overload, like every blogger and their brother, and mother are talking and posting about it – so it feels saturated)

So my thought is this… to keep it short and sweet. And well organized so it is easy to shop.

I’m organizing my picks into 3 categories.

  1. CLASSICS –  Items I already own, love and stock up on at the sale
  2. TRY ON SESH – Items I saw in person and tried on
  3. Fall 2019 “trendy” pieces to add

If you want the low down on men, beauty, etc just let me know – I saw some good things but seriously don’t want to overwhelm.

Army Green Pants

If there is one pant you need to add to your wardrobe this season it’s an army green pant! For real! Mark my words you guys… We knew there was something going on when Elana and I both showed up to work one day in almost matching Nili Lotan pairs last summer. We’ve been styling the heck out of them ourselves and for clients ever since. And the army green love fest is not slowing down.

Notice I said an army green pant NOT a cargo pant. It could be a green cargo or a green wide leg, or a green chino style. That’s the beauty of it – it’s about the color NOT the style per se. So there really is a pant out there that can fit every age, body and price point. And, I promise you, you’ll be surprised how often you wear them. And, how put together you feel in them too.

One other note… The green color of the army green can vary and that is ok. Some are more olive (like mine in the photo above) and some are more moss (like Elana’s). It’s that kind of casual, military-esque green we are going for. NOT a forest or kelly green. Think more laid back, sun-washed than preppy, holiday cheer.

Why Adding Army Green Pants is a MUST
  • It’s a pant that’s on trend, but not trendy.
  • Because it’s the color, not the style we are after, you can find a pair that flatters your body type.
  • Think of them as a stand-in for your white jeans. They’re not as dressy as a black pant but a step up from a blue jean.
  • They will carry you from summer to fall with a change of shoes.
  • Style them with a sneaker and sweatshirt or with a heel and a blazer.
  • You’re wearing it as a pant so it doesn’t matter if it’s a “good” color for you (and I think a lot of that is bull and can easily be fixed with style tricks – but that’s for another post)

How To Wear Army Green Pants

There truly are a gazillion ways to wear these pants. I love styling mine for going out or running around or even for a business casual environment. With the change of a shoe and top, these pants can take you thru a bunch of different scenarios. I styled up a few just to show you how. And I linked all the pieces below each photo if you’d like to purchase or get product details.

Old Navy?!? Really, YES!!

Full disclosure. I have not shopped at Old Navy in years. When my kids were little it was my goto for them.  Stylish but affordable pieces they could wear and if they ruined it (which they usually did) I wasn’t dying inside.

But this week I popped into my local Old Navy pick up some fresh t-shirts and tank tops. I feel like those need to get replaced every year or so, and I heard the Old Navy lux line was amazing and under $10 a shirt, so definitely worth a stop.

Color me Surprised!! Really Good Stuff

Go Old Navy, Go!! When I started looking for the t-shirts, I kept being drawn to dresses, and jackets and linen tops and sweaters and even exercise clothes. They were all good, like really good! Better quality and hand than it looks from when I’ve browsed online. And very, very wallet friendly prices too.

There was so much goodness, that I didn’t have time to try it all on. I had only planned to stop in a pick up some t-shirts. So in the interest of time, and research for all of you I decided to take it all home and do a big ol try on session.

Everything I picked did not look fabulous on. But, at the end of the day, there was more good than bad and certainly more good than I would have ever expected.

4th of July Ready

Considering July 4th is this week, you should know, Old Navy is stocked with all the patriotic, red white and blue you could ever need. However, if you’re more like me and like to do the less overt 4th of July outfit check out this post from last yearI updated all of the links so you can recreate my full proof 4th of July outfit easy peasy.

My Old Navy Haul – here and on Instagram Stories

I’m going to link up everything I tried on from Old Navy for you below. But I am also going to post videos on my Instagram Stories that will show you more detail as to how I styled them and how they fit, felt etc. If you don’t currently follow me on Instagram, please do – I post daily with outfits of the day, dressing room try-on sessions and more. It’s fun and I try to respond to all direct messages as well.

Rockstar Jeans

Old Navy is also the home of my beloved Rockstar jean. A piece I’ve recommended to many a client thru the years. Great style and fit, a bit of stretch and a much more friendly price point than Rag and Bone or AG. In fact, I was just with a client this week that I’ve worked with since 2015. She was saying how happy she was that I introduced her to the Old Navy rockstars. They’re her perfect everyday jean. She has “designer denim” for Saturday nights and such but at @$25 a pair if the rockstars get trashed she’s not having a heart attack.

One more point I love about these jeans – they come in regular, tall, petite and plus sizes. So there literally is a pair for everybody and every BODY.

It’s Sandal Time!

Summer is here! YAY!! And that means sandal weather is finally here too. Get your pedicures ladies, it’s time for the toes to come out and play.
When it comes to sandals there are a few sandal styles that are uber stylish and versatile too.
Theoretically, I could throw up a zillion sandal styles on you right now because there are so many good ones to choose from.

But I’m gonna get my ADD under control and organize them by category… Really organize by life role – because that’s how we do things for our clients too.

Yes, I could organize them by flat, wedge, heel, etc., but in reality, there are wedges you could wear to work and those that are a no go. So, organizing them by life role, I believe (and hope) will be more practical and helpful.

Casual Sandals

Honestly casual sandals are the ones I wear the most because my work life (styling people) is pretty casual AND because I need my everyday footwear to be uber comfortable (because so much of my time is spent on my feet). Even if you work in a traditional office environment having a great pair of casual sandals is essential to your summer wardrobe – think weekends and off duty.

Work Sandals

What makes a sandal a work sandal? If your office allows open toes (more and more do these days) an appropriate sandal for work would be one that has thicker straps, so less foot is showing. In other words, flipflops are not a work shoe unless you are a lifeguard. And if you don’t work in an office, think of these sandals as church or meeting appropriate footwear.

Going Out Sandal

Going out sandals are the summer version of your going out boot or your pointy toe pump. They take a basic t-shirt and jeans outfit and make it feel special. And they also look great with a sundress for an evening out. Earlier this season we talked about the floss shoe, and it’s a perfect going out sandal. But if they’re not your style, here are some other great options.

Square Toe Sandals are Coming Back

One thing to note about the trends I’m seeing in footwear… especially in sandals. Square toes are baaaack. Yup, the 90’s look is here and I think going to be here for a while. If your toes have been mad at you for the last decade because you’ve been pinching them into itty bitty pointy toe shoes, REJOICE!! And if you’re panicking because you love the look of a pointy toe, don’t worry, they’re still totally in and look fab.

A Raincoat Can be Chic

Rain, rain GO AWAY! I don’t want to have to wear a raincoat AGAIN!!!  Is it just me or does it feel like it’s been raining FOREVER! Mother nature get your sh*t together already!

As if the idea of putting on a raincoat isn’t bad enough… to then feel like the Gorton’s Fisherman when wearing it, is just too much to bear. While I sincerely hope we won’t need to wear our raincoats much longer, I do know that we seem to need these classic pieces in our wardrobes year after year.

If we can’t control the weather at least we can control how we respond to the crappy weather. And IMHO looking chic is the best revenge. And there are some surprisingly good looking raincoats out there right now.

Raincoats I LOVE
Turn on your JavaScript to view content
It’s raining again…

We’ve written about raincoats and rain boots and umbrellas before, but that was in March of 2018. In March I expect it to be rainy, and kind of cold too – so most of those coats were thicker or had liners. But in June, we shouldn’t be having this much rain and our raincoat just need to keep us dry, not quite as warm.

So, basically, I am wondering if anyone else is feeling the need to start building an ark? While I am kind of saying this as a joke, I am also kind of not. I am truly loving my new raincoat and am excited to wear it, just not in June!! I’m way over this weather, just sayin’ and complainin’.

Thank you!!! 10K!!!

Red and Yellow, yep it works!

Recently, I have been totally drawn to outfits that combine red and yellow together. Individually each of these colors can make an outfit feel up to date. However, when they’re combined, in the right way, it’s like putting MSG on your outfit. The color combo just makes everything explode, in the best way.

Honestly, if you asked me 2 years ago about putting red and yellow together in an outfit I’d have told you it reminded me of McDonald’s golden arches, and probably warned you to stay away from it. But now, it feels eye-catching, modern and oh so right.

Here are some rules to help you mix this color combo even more effortlessly. Rules for Wearing Red and Yellow.
  1. Firstly, make sure there is another grounding color to tone down the red and yellowishness. Denim, both dark and light wash look great.
  2. The yellow should be more of a French’s mustard yellow than traditional mustard which had more brown undertones.
  3. When the red and yellow have the same color saturation values, they play nicely together – meaning,  a pastel yellow looks better with a pink than a bold red.
  4. Lastly, if yellow (or red) is not your “color”  try wearing it as a shoe, belt or other accessories, something that’s not next to your face. You’ll get the impact of the color without looking washed out.
Red and Yellow Outfit Ideas

So, I thought it might be fun to show you a few ways to incorporate red and yellow into your everyday outfits.

Mix those colors!

Longtime TWC readers might remember when we talked about adding yellow to your wardrobe last spring. Did you heed our advice? Then all you have to do is add some red to update this season. If you didn’t,  I’ve got you covered…I’ve rounded up some of my favorite, stand-alone red and yellow pieces for you. You can wear them as is, or mix and match for some added fun!

Reader Questions Answered – Where can I find a casual summer dress?

You all know we LOVE when you write in with questions… Truly, some of our best and most popular blog posts come from YOUR questions. Like the “Is it OK to wear Pantyhose” post… it’s literally gone viral and is read by 2000+ people each week (crazy, right??)

A few weeks ago Molly sent in this question about casual summer dresses.

I love your blog! Where can one find cute, flattering, well-made and affordable casual summer dresses? I struggle each year finding casual dresses for summer. I want something that I can wear out to dinner and drinks or to a backyard bbq. Everything I see in the stores is either practically sheer, requires no bra (I’m too old for that). shapeless (which makes me look like a pregnant blob or a square) or the fabric shows everything. Can you tackle this in an upcoming blog? Thanks!
The Struggle is REAL

We’ve been running into the same issue with our one-on-one wardrobe clients as well. There are a lot of dresses out there but not a lot of the right kind of dress.

The last time we wrote about the day dress we focused on dresses as shorts alternatives. Meaning some of the ones we picked were short, or strapless or even a bit more expensive. But with this post, we’re changing it up…

What Molly’s looking for is a practical but nice looking summer dress. There’s a checklist of elements a dress has to have for us to put it on this list…

Must have elements for a perfect casual summer dress
  • Not too short
  • Bra-friendly
  • Light fabric (for warm weather) but that’s not see thru
  • Affordable (that word means different things for different people) but we’re focusing on dresses under $200. Some as low as $20!

ALL of these will look great with a flat sandal for day or with a wedge or block heel sandal for a back yard bbq or dinner.

The TOP 3 Jewelry Trends to Add Right Now

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… Accessories are where it’s AT if you want to change up your outfits, freshen up your look and get the most bang for your buck. And for what we’re talking about today, we mean accessories as in jewelry.  Not diamonds are a girl’s best friend kind of jewelry (although, they ARE and they do DO the job well). We’re talking about the more price friendly version. The fun trends in costume jewelry that simply and affordably give new life to your basics. And, bonus, make your outfits feel au currant (aka up-to-date)

Personally and professionally we are big believers in the magic of jewelry and it’s role as the “parsley” of the outfit. We talked about it in depth here. So we won’t go into it, but just know jewelry is your outfit BFF.

This season there are 3 jewelry styles that make any outfit feel fresh and new. If you follow TWC on Instagram you may already know what they are because Hallie has been wearing the heck out of them lately.

1. Big Links

Link jewelry is everywhere. The beauty of it is that the open middle of an enlarged link still lets it feel airy and not too heavy for summertime outfits. You can wear these links on your neck, wrist or even your ears. This is a great trend to pick up at a vintage or resale shop. The piece Hallie is wearing below is a flea market find. It was originally meant as a belt (circa 1969) but is now living happily as a necklace in 2019!

Similar Necklace // Dress // Jacket // Sunglasses

2. Shells

We’re always on the hunt for casual jewelry – pieces that work well for an off duty look but still look finished. Shells are totally in that lane. They have a beachy laid back vibe but when they’re dipped in gold or silver they have a sophisticated finish. Maybe that’s why Hallie’s been wearing this one DAILY!!

Choker // T-Shirt // Blazer

3. Rainbow Brights

Colorful rainbow looks are happening in clothing this season too. But adding it to your outfit in jewelry is an easy way to try it out without a lot of investment. And when you wear them, there is something so happy and warm weather like that happens, it just makes you smile.

So, do you think you’ll be adding one of these styles to your jewelry repertoire this summer? If so, which one? Truly, we want to know!

White jeans before memorial day.

We think that it is officially time to pack the heavy sweaters away until October. And at the moment, we’re not sad about it. However, it isn’t quite summer yet. And now the heavy sweaters are all packed up. So we get stuck in this weirdo time period of what to put on TODAY.  Like it’s a Tuesday and it’s 60 degrees outside.  It’s not 80 degrees yet, so we aren’t ready for dresses and sandals, and it’s no longer 30 degrees so we don’t need to be all bundled and stuff. So what do we wear? How about we dare say white jeans before Memorial Day.

Yes, we know what you are thinking. “BUT, I can’t wear my white jeans because it’s not Memorial Day yet”.  Wrong, and a total myth. When this weirdo weather hits all we want to do is feel refreshed and pull out our new pieces, but it just isn’t totally time yet. So, one way to reinvent the old before mixing in the new is to pull out your white jeans. Ya know those things that have been collecting cobwebs since Labor Day. (Oh, and these same rules apply for Labor Day, too.)

As long as there’s no snow on the ground or oodles of rain puddles, you can wear your white jeans, and wear them proudly. But there are rules to doing this so you don’t look too summery, or too wintry. There’s a real fine line to this transitional weather stage and making your white jeans work.

The 3 rules for wearing white jeans before Memorial Day.
  1. Wear earth tone colors on top in a lightweight wool or lightweight cashmere blends. Yes, neon and citrus colors are in for this spring and summer, (if you want to wear them now, wear them with your blue jeans but save them with your whites for summer). Heavy wool and cashmere is too heavy and doesn’t give the white bottom the transitional look you’re going for.
  2. Opt for a neutral color bootie or closed toe shoe. An open toe sandal screams summer, and an UGG boot is just too wintry.
  3. Try layering them up. A striped long sleeve T-shirt and a neutral color or camel color topper and pair of booties totally can work to transition your white bottoms. You can even wear a white blouse as Hallie did in the top photo, just make sure there’s some texture, stripe or graphic on the top to help calm down the white.
