4 Ways To Start Improving Your Gut Health Today

If you read my last article Why Gut Health Is Important you would have gained a good basic understating of why gut health is such a big topic these days, and why so many of us are suffering from gut issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, food intolerances, candida, leaky gut, IBS, other diagnosed gut conditions and auto-immune issues.

And if you answered YES to any of the gut related questions in the last article Why Gut Health Is Important you will most likely want to get started on healing your tummy troubles!

So here are 4 ways you can start improving your gut health today:

(And I’ve kept them super simple so you can start doing this at home straight away).

1. Look at your current diet.

Are you currently eating or drinking any of the following:

Soy milk, or soy based products (tofu, tempe), processed vegetable oils, wheat based foods such as breads, cakes, pastries, pasta’s, dairy products, milk, yoghurt, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, or eat a lot of corn or conventional produce, processed foods & foods that contain hidden GMO’s, artificial sweeteners, soft-drinks?

If you answered YES to one or more, start by eliminating these foods in your diet, as they are gut irritants, inflammatory and can weaken the gut. Replace with natural based sugar free, non GMO, organic if you can, dairy and gluten free options.

Try this for a week and see and feel the difference this makes. It may help with your bloating, improve your toilet trips, as well as improve your mood, quality of sleep and more! If your gut health does not improve after eliminating these inflammatory and gut weakening foods you may need to delve deeper into your tummy troubles as these types of foods can contribute to leaky gut which requires a bit more attention and strategy to healing your gut.

2. Start taking Apple Cider Vinegar before every meal

Apple Cider Vinegar is truly a miracle food! If any of you follow me on Instagram you’ll know how much I go on and on about ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar).

Most of us have low stomach acid these days due to our crazy lifestyles and diet. And this can contribute to gas, bloating, poor digestion, malabsorption, inflammation, weight gain, parasites, candida and bad bacteria and general poor gut health.

Well ACV can help improve that by increasing stomach acid. Having optimal stomach acid is key to keeping candida, parasites, bad bacteria away, and to ensuring all your food is digested properly when it hits the stomach.

To improve your gut health today start by taking 1T ACV in a small glass of water before every meal. It’s quite strong, so knock it back like you would having a tequila shot! And then follow up with another glass of water.

Don’t worry even though you are drinking an ‘acid’ you won’t become acidic as ACV leaves an alkaline ash in the body.

There are also a million other amazing benefits of taking ACV (literally) such as lowering blood sugar from the foods you eat, helping improve insulin resistance, improving protein digestion (great for retaining muscle mass), I might even write a seperate article about this miracle food another time. :)

3. Take a good quality broad-spectrum pro-biotic every day. Maybe even twice a day.

Working on your gut health without taking probiotics is like trying to make a raw vegan cheesecake with out coconut oil. It just won’t work!

Poor gut health usually involves an incorrect ratio of good bacteria to bad, with more bad than good.

So we need to correct this imbalance to get you feeling good again. (There’s a specific protocol for doing this which we do together in The Gut Makeover Program), but in the meantime for a good all round maintenance / daily application do this:

Find yourself a good quality broad-spectrum pro-biotic and take it in the morning before breakfast, and perhaps even 1 before you go to bed. You need to take these every day, as we excrete good bacteria every day, and sometimes we need even higher doses and other specific strains depending on what is going on with our gut health at the time.

Broad spectrum pro-biotics supports normal absorption and assimilation of nutrients, promotes healthy bacteria counts and pH levels in the gut, helps maintain a healthy intestinal bacterial balance, maintains intestinal comfort and health, may help alleviate occasional gas, bloating or traveler’s diarrhea.

These are the strains to look for in a broad-spectrum (and the highest count possible, in the billions):

Saccharomyces boulardii, Lactobacillus plantarum, Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus paracasei, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus brevis, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei.

4. Eat more plants.

The latest gut microbiome scientific studies have shown that the more plants you eat the more diverse your bacterial terrain will be. And that missing gut microbiome or less diversity can contribute to obesity, particular food cravings, ADHD, anxiety or depression.

So check out my free recipes or sign up to me via the Home Page of the website and let me help you get started in the right direction towards adding more delicious plant based foods into your everyday.

Try these 4 simple but key tips for improving your gut health and let me know how you go!

Tried these tips already and still feeling blah?

I know how much of a drain it is on living your every day life to the fullest, when you have to deal with a bloated tummy, not being able to lose weight, or having acne in your adult years, auto-immune issues or leaky gut.

If I can heal my gut so can you!

Depression is a growing problem and anxiety is becoming an epidemic as our fast paced world becomes even more intense. Relationships, career, finances, social engagements, society and the diet we eat all play a part.

In this article ‘Have Anxiety or Depression? Try Going Vegan’ we are going to explore how diet can play a huge part in your mood.

It’s estimated that depression costs about $210 billion per year in the United States, and Australia isn’t far behind.. with 1 in 5 experiencing some form of mental illness at some stage in their lives.

Studies show diet plays a part

Recent research shows that an effective way to treat depression may NOT be through medication but through dietary changes.

A study published in the journal Neuroscience showed that diet plays a huge role in having a daily positive mood. Out of 620 participants, those who ate the most fruits and vegetables and the least animal products were found to have less depression and anxiety than those who ate a standard omnivorous diet.

Food for thought?!

The participants were divided into three groups based on their food choices: vegan, vegetarian or omnivore. They then tested and measured their overall mood using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS).

While the results showed that overall those eating a vegan diet had lower stress scores, results did differ between male and female participants.

In males, a higher fruit and vegetable intake was associated with less anxiety. For females, a vegan diet along with DECREASING sweets led to reduced stress levels.

This study is in line with others that show vegans and vegetarians to have a more positive mood in general.

Seventh Day Adventists, are a great example as they tend to follow a more plant-based diet and report maintaining a healthy mood, even despite decreased intakes of omega-3 fatty acids.

A raw vegan diet is arguably the most powerful plant based diet as it not only incorporates the principles of vegan eating, but also eliminates all processed foods, focusing on alive, vibrant and fresh natural produce, in it’s whole form.

A delicious way to combat depression and anxiety!

Foods consumed in their most natural raw state ensures a multitude of vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, antioxidants and phytochemicals are available to the body to help keep depression away.

Fasting is the key to health

If you’ve ever struggled with food cravings, energy levels, niggly healthy issues, bloat or weight that just won’t shift, skin, sleep or mood issues this article on ‘5 Reasons You Should Be Doing Juice Fasting. Science Proves It’ is for you!

There are now even some scientific studies coming out on juice fasting that show significant improvement in mood and gut microbiotica after fasting, and that the entire immune system can be reset in just 3 days of fasting!

My fasting journey

I first discovered fasting as a way to heal from my Systemic Candida, but what I experienced on my first ever fast was so much more than that.

My moods and my body felt lighter, I was experiencing the best health I had ever experienced, my mind was clear and I had a renewed focus for my healing journey and my life.

The fear is real!

But, fasting can put a lot of fear into people. The thought of not eating all day can be scary! All those attachments to food, the enjoyment we seek from it every day – well, what if that disappears and we don’t have anything to look forward to?!

I know those fears certainly came up for me, and what I discovered was that, they were all made up stories in my mind! Oh how our minds love to play games with us.

I discovered that with the right combination of juices, smoothies and blended soups I could easily fast all day without feeling hungry or craving certain foods. And reap the benefits of fasting.

So what are they? Here are my top 5:

1. Slays cravings

Doing a juice fast is like hitting a reset button on all your cells. And that means wiping the slate clean on cell memory. All those attachments to those addictive foods, wheat, dairy, sugar, chocolate fall away. And let me tell you – it’s so nice not to be driven by thoughts sending me to the fridge or pantry every couple of hours!

2. Improves digestion

One of the biggest benefits of fasting is that we are not eating, thereby giving our body a break from digestion and this then gives it time to heal and regenerate, particularly the colon wall which is generally under a lot of stress with daily food choices and lifestyle factors, creating weakened gut linings, poor digestion and assimilation.

So when the body has time to repair, be sure it’s repairing and strengthening the colon too, helping to strengthen your digestive powers!

3. Helps improve liver function

Doing a juice fast helps to cleanse the liver and helps it produce better, more efficient bile. This means your body can flush toxins and break down fat more efficiently. It also makes those precious nutrients more available to your body and reduces strain on your immune system. Toilet trips improve and you become better overall at eliminating toxins. Bonus – it’s easier for you to maintain your optimal weight too!

4. Cleans up rogue cells, & creates new healthy cells

The most prominent effect of fasting is an increase in autophagy, a self-cleansing process at a cellular level.

During autophagy the body removes damaged and aging proteins, organelles such as mitochondria, and efficiently keeps up cellular housekeeping by removing and replacing damaged parts.

When we eat, the autophagy process all but stops. Fasting for periods of time activates it.

5. Easy weight loss

A lot of fat on our bodies is actually stored toxicity. It can also show up as puffiness or bloating. Our bodies are intelligent! All toxicity gets pushed away from essential organs and organ function, into areas of the body which stores fat for the toxins to be ‘housed’. Over time any toxicity in the body is going to cause damage so we want those toxins out!

Fasting is an easy way for you to start tapping into weight loss. Why? As your body receives the signal to heal, it will release all toxicity from the body so it can be safely eliminated. And as the toxins get released, so do you too, lose any excess weight that has been stored as toxicity.

So if that isn’t enough to convince you, what is?!

If you find yourself coming up with excuses to NOT do a fast to improve your health & energy, I invite you to do some self enquiry around where that resistance is coming from.

1. Are the excuses really real?

2. How is that mind chatter going to help serve you in the best possible way to achieving your health goals?

These questions might help you find your answer.

Join my next group kick off for my Beginners Juice Fast

I run a 5 Day Juice Fast for Beginners with regular group kick offs. It is THE BEST juice fast if you are new to fasting as I have specifically designed the recipes to help support your liver through detox and so you don’t go hungry.

I get asked this question a lot! So I thought I would write an article on Cooked vs Uncooked Food and give you some links to research and scientific papers to back up the pros and cons. For many of us, we are brought up on a mainly cooked diet, and most of us find as we get older our digestion is not so good. AND people join me wanting to get healthier by switching to a plant based diet but find their digestion is even WORSE when transitioning.

Let me explain why. Cooked foods require our own finite reserves of enzymes to break down the food. Digesting cooked foods also takes A LOT of work for the body and means the body does not get time to clear up rogue or dead cells and make new healthy cells very well.

Improper food combining, stress and dietary choices also weaken stomach acid production so when people try to switch to raw vegan, these issues will really become apparent.

This is where I can help. With recipes, techniques and supplements to help get people’s digestive fire strong and healthy again, so digesting raw vegan foods becomes easy. Email me if you would like help in this area.

Not all cooked food is the devil

However, this is not to say consuming a cooked diet is totally unhealthy! It’s still possible to detox and heal consuming a cooked diet, but it does need to be vegan for a period of time with a little raw thrown in (read on and find out why).

Removing the inflammatory foods, meat, dairy, gluten, goes a long way to cleaning up your body, lowers inflammation and helps set you up for healthier eating habits.

And give you the confidence to take the next step to maybe try adding in some raw vegan meals to help your body continue healing and upgrading.

Here’s a great article from Medical News Today that links to the benefits of a raw or plant based diet http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/251689.php.

The scientific debate on whether uncooked food is healthier than cooked food, however, is undecided, have a read of this one and let me know what you think! http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/raw-veggies-are-healthier/.

This is science

But as an experienced raw food proponent and educator I can give you a foodie perspective (and my own personal healing journey is testament to this) on the benefits of live food vs cooked food, that is simply science.

Live or raw foods (not cooked) have all the beneficial living enzymes, vitamins and minerals our bodies need for optimal health.

When food is cooked over 44°C-48°C these precious enzymes are destroyed along with a lot of the beneficial vitamins and minerals.

Another bonus? Plant based foods especially the green ones contain tons of chlorophyll which is oxygen for our blood. Chlorophyll is plant blood and is very similar to our own blood make up, and is super alkalizing for our bodies.

When we consume oxygen rich foods we create oxygen for our cells to function optimally and to keep out the bad guys: fungus, parasites, bad bacteria and serious diseases.

Cooked foods triggers an immune response

Interesting to note (again science has proved this) that eating cooked foods triggers an immune response called ‘pathological leukocytosis’, which is not dissimilar to an immune response triggered by a foreign invader. Scientists discovered that when consuming raw foods, the body’s response remained neutral.

Eating more live raw foods is giving your body a fuel that it knows what to do with it and this means everything is assimilated and used for cellular energy, metabolism, growth and repair.

Instead of potential weight gain from inflammation and toxicity from consuming too many cooked foods.

Get curious

But as with most things in life you really need to try it out and check in with your body and feel in to how it’s working for you.

What I have noticed is that people who follow my principles and plans – using the plant based diet as their foundation tend to experience on a daily basis more energy and vitality, improved digestion, overall good health and optimal weight.

It’s soooo easy to fall off the wagon in winter with your healthy eating goals. The cold temps make you want to eat and eat and eat. Well it does for me anyway! And that usually means stodgy carbohydrate laden foods, lots of chocolate and probably some red wine!

So in this article I am going to share with you my 4 proven strategies on how to maintain a healthy diet during winter.

Part of what I teach when you join me on a plant based journey is to learn how to eat intuitively. And that means eating with the seasons.

In the cooler months we tend to want to eat heavier foods, and if not choosing wisely, this can lead to weight gain.

We also tend to want to hibernate more so we move less too. Double whammy!

I know raw vegan is THE best diet for detoxing and healing the body, but trying to force yourself to eat a raw vegan diet through winter can have the opposite effect – it can give rise to dampness in the body and create its own set of health issues if not addressed.

It’s all about balance, and being more intuitive to what your body needs and fuelling it appropriately.

Our bodies are always changing and we are changing and shifting with the season too.

Another reason why it’s quite natural to get a cold between seasons, as the body naturally detoxifies at this time.

BUT instead of reaching for that block of chocolate, glass of red or starchy pasta meal – that you know is only going to kick in unhealthy eating habits and weight gain, try my 4 tips below to keep you on track in the cooler months.

My 4 Tips On How To Maintain A Healthy Diet During Winter: 1. Omit All Dairy & Gluten.

That includes wheat! Both are major culprits for inflammation in the body, leading to bloat and weight gain, not to mention a fast track to gut issues.

Substitute with gluten free and try out plant based milks, yoghurts and cheeses instead. They taste just as amazing, especially the cheeses in a vegan lasagne or pasta!

2. Stay Primarily Vegan.

Mostly cooked vegan as your body needs warming foods during this time. Add in warming spices, and think about using roasted root veges which are very grounding and nourishing. Or a delicious stir fry with some buckwheat noodles.

Use the 80/20 rule (I use this rule for everything as it works so well!). So that means 80% primarily plant based and 20% of what you fancy – so this could be some quality organic animal protein if you desire.

OR 20% raw, its always great to maintain some raw on your plate in some way (baby spinach, fresh herbs, kale etc). As we all know the power of those beneficial enzymes in raw foods.

3. Move

Even if you don’t feel like it! Just 10 minutes a day is enough, rug up, get outside, get some fresh air, or if it’s really unbearable outside, google a HIIT workout on You Tube and you’ll be a fat burning machine in no time, it will warm you up, give you energy and improve your mood!

4. Have A Daily Detox Strategy

It’s sooo easy for toxins to build up in your body during winter, as the urge to move is less, eat more and stay indoors is REAL. So have a daily detox strategy to ensure your insides are eliminating properly, and possibly have support to keep your detoxification pathways working. What’s especially nice at the colder times of year is making a turmeric, ginger, garlic, raw honey hot drink and having this daily. It’s super immune boosting, helps support the liver and keeps bugs at bay.

Feeling the need for some extra support to stay healthy during winter?

I run regular online group winter cleanses, not a juice or raw vegan meal in sight! Just delicious, hearty, nourishing goodness, with the support of me by your side and my Cleanse Community. if you’d like to be put on the wait list for the next round.

3 Ways To Start Improving Your Gut Health Today

If you read my last article Why Gut Health Is Important you would have gained a good basic understating of why gut health is such a big topic these days, and why so many of us are suffering from gut issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, food intolerances, candida, leaky gut, IBS, other diagnosed gut conditions and auto-immune issues.

And if you answered YES to any of the gut related questions in the last article Why Gut Health Is Important you will most likely want to get started on healing your tummy troubles!

So here are 3 ways you can start improving your gut health today:

(And I’ve kept them super simple so you can start doing this at home straight away).

1. Look at your current diet.

Are you currently eating or drinking any of the following:

Soy milk, or soy based products (tofu, tempe), wheat based foods such as breads, cakes, pastries, pasta’s, dairy products, milk, yoghurt, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, or eat a lot of corn or conventional produce, processed foods & foods that contain hidden GMO’s, artificial sweeteners, soft-drinks?

Why Gut Health Needs To Be Your EVERYTHING!

Gut Issues are an epidemic these days and it’s no surprise when we look at how our modern diet and lifestyle is detrimental to having thriving good bacteria that protect and support us in our gut.Without these good guys in the correct ratio we are open to a whole host of issues and diseases. Symptoms are wide and varied: Gas, bloating, irregular or unsatisfying toilet trips, skin issues, leaky gut, auto-immune issues, and other diagnosed gut conditions are pretty common these days. Not only that, having imbalanced gut flora or poor gut health can cause weight gain, food cravings, depression, and other neurological disorders.

Why has gut health become such a big deal?
  • There’s a direct correlation between an increase in gut issues since pasteurisation, eating denatured foods, crop spraying (pesticides / fungicides), GMO foods and overuse of antibiotics as these have become the main stay in society. Gut health is also inherited generationally.
  • Pasteurisation is used to make foods “safer”, have a long shelf life and a consistent taste.
  • Pasteurisation destroys all the good bacteria, precious enzymes that help the body digest food as well as kills off vitamins and minerals.
  • Anything purchased in a can, bottle, tetra pak, packet has generally been denatured, heated, pasteurised = dead food. Dead food = dead bodies!
  • Add to that our daily stressors, stimulants and daily addictions - coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, prescription drugs, vaccinations, our gut = immune system is really taking a beating.

This is why gut health needs to be your EVERYTHING!

Working on healing your gut, creating a strong healthy gut is like building a really solid healthy foundation for your house, as without that foundation you have a very unstable house and will suffer from ill health.

How do you determine where you’re gut health is currently at?

Can you answer YES to any of these questions -

  • Do you experience bloating after eating?
  • Are you often times moody, irritable and tired?
  • Do you struggle to lose weight?
  • Do you eat a standard diet that is mostly cooked, with wheat, dairy, meat?
  • Do you regularly drink alcohol?
  • Do you experience some level of stress on a daily basis?
  • Ever taken antibiotics, steroids, proton pump inhibitors?
  • Currently experience leaky gut, IBS, gut dysbiosis, Chron’s, IBD, candida, heartburn, indigestion, or other diagnosed gut condition?

If you answered YES to one or more of these questions you are most likely experiencing imbalanced gut health and poor gut flora.

Here are some interesting gut health facts -
  • 80% of our immune system resides in our gut.
  • We are 90% bacteria, 10% human. There are more bacterial cells than human cells in our bodies so it makes a lot of sense to understand how to look after our bacteria!
  • The vagus nerve connects the gut to brain, the gut is host to 100 million neurons and 90% of this communication is actually from the gut to the brain, not the other way around. Food for thought huh?
  • A healthy gut will keep pathogens at bay IF the gut flora is in the correct balance, approximately 75% good bacteria, 15% bad bacteria. (I love this stat as it’s almost like the 80/20 rule of eating, and a similar percentage of how much water is in our bodies and the planet!).
  • Other diseases you may not think would be associated with imbalanced gut flora and ill gut health - Lung disease, colon cancer and other cancers, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, allergies, food intolerances, anxiety, Autism, Parkinson’s.

So how do we get optimal gut health?

I teach the Clean, Seed, Feed principle, as it’s so effective (having used this protocol during my healing journey from leaky gut and systemic Candida):

It’s so simple!

  1. Clean out the colon of pathogens, bad bacteria - detox, colonics, enemas while giving the digestive system a rest.
  2. Seed with good bacteria, fermented foods, gut healing herbs.
  3. Feed with plant based foods - pre and probiotic rich foods that support an optimal and long term gut health environment.
