Benefits of a memory foam mattress

A memory foam mattress is considered to be one of the more luxurious mattress types. This is because the foam is a heat sensitive foam. The foam reacts and softens when it comes into contact with your body.

Perfect for pressure point pain

This is a perfect option for you if you suffer from pressure point pain. Pressure points are created when the surface is too firm and the softness from the mattress will cradle those points. These points are more often your hips, shoulders, elbows and knees. Once your joints are be cradled enough your body will not try and change position during the night. This will allow to to get the deep rest that is needed for the correct rest and recovery.

Best for back pain

These mattresses are also great for your lower back issues if you have them. These pains are caused by an unsuitable sleep surface. When a mattress is too firm or too soft, your muscles are forced to compensate during the night. If the mattress is too firm, your back will be too low. If the mattress is too soft, the back will be too high. The unnatural position forces your muscles to try and pull your back into the proper position. This is what causes the morning back stiffness. With a memory foam mattress the heavier parts of your body will sink to the correct level and you will not have the posture alignment problem any more.

No more sleepless nights

A memory foam mattress is also great for eliminating partner disturbance. Because of its elasticity, the sleep surface does not “pull” like a traditional foam surface. This is perfect for you if your partner turns a lot during the night. Getting quality sleep is vital for your health and well being and being disturbed during the night will break your sleep cycles.

Kids beds

Kids beds that can enhance your child’s future and set them on the path to a successful life.

Choosing the right bed for your child is possibly the most important choices we as parents will ever have to make. As a parent you often find yourself worrying about the best school, the right friends, the proper nutrition the correct choice of clothing and so many more issues. One of the biggest life decisions however is mostly overlooked. And that is the choice of mattress for your child.

When it comes to the mattress choice for your children, you probably find your self thinking “well it is only for a child so let’s go for a more affordable option” I know this because I come across this scenario almost on a daily basis. The fact is that this thought pattern could potentially ruin your child’s chance at the best possible future. The best kids beds are essential for their development.

Why sleep is important for your growing child.

When your children are sleeping, there is a lot going on both mentally and physically. making sure that he or she gets the right amount of quality sleep is so very important for a number of reasons.

  • Sleeping promotes the growth process.

During sleep, the glands produce growth hormones that feed every part of your child’s body. This includes the muscles, skeletal system, brain, internal organs, tendons, ligaments etc. Every part of your child body is reliant on these growth hormones to refresh and rejuvenate from the day’s activities and allow the body to grow.

  • Sleep strengthens the heart and lungs.

When your child is asleep, their heart rate slows and blood pressure drops. This reduces the stress on the heart muscles and allows them to relax and recover from an active day. As for the lungs the breathing deepens and slows down, this allows for better recovery and rest which promotes the strengthening of the muscles that help them contract and expand. In the case of both the heart and lungs. This results in better physical recovery during exercise and better distribution of oxygen to the muscles too when running and playing.

  • Sleep helps regulate weight.

When the body is getting the right type of sleep, the essential hormone Leptin is released into the system. This hormone is responsible for.regulating the appetite. If your child’s sleep pattern is interrupted, the distribution of the hormone is disrupted and this could lead to an irregular appetite which results in eating more than needed in order to balance out the shortage of Leptin. When your child is overeating to compensate this imbalance, the consumption of calories exceeds the number burnt during the day. This increases the risk of obesity in later stages.

  • Boosted immune system.

Proteins called cytokines are produced during sleep. The body needs these proteins to fight off infection, illness and stress. Recent studies have shown that a disrupted sleeping pattern can inhibit the production of these proteins. That leaves your body vulnerable to germs which can lead to a variety of illnesses and stress.

Why the mattress matters

Kids beds need to have the right mattress. There are two important factors that every child’s mattress must address, posture and circulation. These two mattress features will make the difference between a child that is not living up to their true potential and a child who is experiencing a bounty-full life. Let’s have a look at how they affect your child

  • Posture

The term posture is often mistakenly associated with only the position of the spine. The fact is that it refers to the entire musculoskeletal system. This includes the bones , muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and all other connective tissues. When there is not proper support for the body this whole system can be thrown out of sync. What then happens is that the entire body is fighting during sleep to get the correct alignment of the system. Although you are not aware of it your sleep pattern is disrupted and the deep sleep cycles never happens or very little of it does. these deep sleep cycles are the important parts of sleep as that is when the magic happens in your child’s body with the distribution of hormones and proteins

  • Circulation

The circulation feature of a kids bed is termed “comfort level” and this refers to the hardness of the sleeping surface. In general there are three degrees of that. Those are firm, medium and soft. Of these three surfaces, the suggested one for kids beds is medium. The medium firmness allows for the best blood circulation through the body. The circulatory system is what carries the nutrients, hormones and proteins through the body during sleep. If the surface is to firm, the blood flow could be hampered and that would cut off the supply of the essential elements to the body. if the surface were too soft, the body would tend to fall into the problem posture alignment as outlined above.

The perfect combination = The best chance for your child to prosper.

When looking for kids beds you may want to take into consideration what the best combination of support and circulation is. Fortunately we have taken that out of the equation for you and have picked apart our mattresses to find the best option that supports your child’s needs. This process left us with one clear winner. The premier design.

This bed ticks all the boxes when it comes to posture and circulation. Check it out below

Bed sizes in South Africa- A guide to finding the right size bed

Bed sizes in South Africa Come in five standard sizes. The chart below will give you the dimensions for each size available.

Size Dimensions in cm

Single

91 cm wide x 188 cm long

Three quarter (3/4)

107 cm wide x 188 long

Double

137 cm wide x 188 cm long

Queen

152 cm wide x 188 cm long

King

183 cm wide x 188 cm long

Deciding on the right size bed is very important and there are a few factors to consider before making your final choice. These factors would include the following –

  • Size of the room – It is suggested that there is enough moving space around the bed for obvious reasons. Not only is it practical to be able to move around the room for cleaning and going about your day but also to give you enough space so that you have a clean sleeping environment. Clean sleeping is very important for your health so things like adequate ventilation space for your mattress to breath is essential.
  • Alone or with partner – We all have this image of couples cuddling and spooning in bed with happy faces. The reality though is that most people need their own space. So it is important to choose a big enough sleep surface so that you, or you and your partner have enough space to accommodate your preferred sleeping position. If you have a surface that is too small you will end up keeping each other awake. That is bad in terms of getting quality sleep, an essential part of a health sleep regime.
  • Restless partner – As mentioned above, a restless partner is bad for your health, simple. The reality is that broken sleep is really bad for you and if you have a restless partner it is a wise choice to choose a bed size that keeps you away from their flailing arms and legs during your sleep cycles.
  • Pets and kids – If you have a large family of kids, human and fury, it is important to note also that they take up space in your bed. So that is another consideration to take to bed when deciding on your bed size. I suggest that you stand back when all of your critters and kids are in the bed to get a feel of the space that they occupy. You can then see what added space you will need for a comfortable nights rest.
Bed sizes explained.

Here we highlight the different types of bed sizes, what the are used for generally and how they fit into your life.

Size Dimensions Description Details

91 cm x 188 cm

With a measurement of 91 x 188, a single bed is ideal for your little ones first big bed. They can get adequate quality sleep up until the end of the toddler stage

Single beds are the smallest standard size, and are often used to create a king size bed by pushing two sets together. They are also great for tiny rooms where space is not really an option

Three quarter

107 cm x 188 cm

3/4 beds are great for student digs, and for kids up to the preteen years. They off enough space for young adults too making them a good option for an economical yet acceptable sleeping surface

The second smallest option in standard sizes. The 3/4 is very popular in bulk accommodation establishments such as hostels, mines and boarding schools. They are also very popular in hospitality situations like a B&B or backpackers where space may not be a luxury

Double

137 cm x 188 cm

Double beds are probably the most common size bought in South Africa. they can easily accommodate a young adult or teenager. They provide a good sleeping surface for a good quality sleep.

Double beds are ideally suited for this modern age living. With apartment buildings and town hose complexes becoming more and more popular. Double beds are also great for your couples who are starting out in life with a limited bedroom space and budget

Queen

152 cm x 188 cm

Queen size beds are considered the best option for couples. it give each individual the opportunity to have enough sleeping area to get an undisturbed sleep.

King

183 cm x 188 cm

Best for couples who need a lot of their own space. The king size bed is perfect if you need the space to have the best quality sleep. It is also recommended for large families who like to spend time in bed on movie nights.

Generally found in the main bedroom. The king size is also often found in hospitality suites and is often the end result of pushing two single beds together. The join of the two beds is often covered with a mattress converter

Extra length beds.

All of the standard size beds should come in extra length, that being 200 cm long from head to toe. This generally accommodates the taller individual but is extremely convenient for those of us who have foot sleeping pets. It is such an awesome way to keep your feet warm on those cold South African winter nights :). I hope you found our bed sizes guide useful.

Best mattress.

What is the best mattress? That would depend on the sleeper of course and what they require from the mattresses in terms of comfort and support.

When choosing a bed it is important to consider these two factors carefully as recent discoveries in sleep and health research shows that your choice can have a big impact in your overall health and well being.

If you are considering a new mattress, obviously you look for the best option available. the unfortunate reality is that most people start the search with a budget in mind. The consequence of this is that you may very well be looking at a mattress that could very well be doing more harm than good.

Comfort

Firstly, let us loook at comfort, what it means and it’s importance in your health. When we refer to comfort, we are specifically referring to the comfort level of  the sleep surface. Generally this refers to how hard/firm or soft the sleep area is. What is important here is the promotion of circulation and the cushioning of the joints.

Circulation is highly important because when you are sleeping, your body is recovering from the days activities. Your blood circulation is now carrying the important hormones, nutrients and all those good things to various parts of your body. So if your blood flow is restricted, the distribution of these elements is limited. This in turn means that your muscles, brain and entire musculoskeletal system is deprived of the building blocks it needs for the best recovery and growth.

Have you ever woken up with stiff or sore joints in your elbows, hips, shoulders or knees? This can also be attributed to the comfort level of the mattress. The joints of your body is concentrated into pressure points as they have a small surface area that takes a high portion of your body weight. This pressure on the joints creates a pain point and stiffness that often accompanies you through the day. It also makes you toss and turn during the night because you are subconsciously trying to relieve these pain points. This results in a broken sleep pattern which also interrupts the rest and recovery sleep cycles.

Support

The term is usually used quite randomly in the bedding industry and often mistakenly coupled with the term posture. It is important to understand what posture and support actually refers to. Many of us believe that posture refers only to the position of the spine during sleep. It does in fact refer to the alignment and proper position of the entire body. This would include the spine, hips and shoulders. The biggest mistake though is thinking that it ends there. The word “posture” refers to the whole body, including not only your skeletal system, but also your internal organ alignment. This includes your heart, lungs and liver. It also includes the tendons, ligaments and all other connective tissues in the body. With the proper posture support, the whole body is aligned and you can achieve the best quality sleep.

The best mattress.

So by taking the above into consideration we would suggest a bed that offers a high degree of support provided by a suitable support core with a medium feel on the comfort side. We have a range of  products that will tick all of the boxes in this regard. Although there are several more options available on our site, we believe that the best options would come from our luxury foam range.

This range of beds has the best support core on offer as well as the required comfort level to provide the best and healthiest sleep experience. These benefits that they offer are essential for growing kids, active individuals and anyone who is serious about getting the most out of life in any aspect. Getting quality sleep is so much more important that just the hours slept. It is really about giving your body and mind the very best opportunity to function at their optimum.
