Our Top 3 Hammock Underquilts Recommendations

Product Description My score Price
My choice ENO Eagles Nest Outfitters

You most likely won’t find a better hammock underquilt out there than this one. I wasn’t able to it, and this is by far the best one I have used so far. The thing I like the most about it is how adjustable it is. When it is unfolded it is 7′ 11″ by 3′ 9″, but you will be able to fit it on most hammocks that are smaller without a problem due to how adjustable it is. If you’re having trouble with that, this underquilt will be your savior.

You should consider this underquilt mainly for all the different uses it has, even though it is more than a little pricey and most people won’t be able to afford it, it’s still a quality product that you should consider. Its versatility is what impresses me the most, and you can use it as a blanket, a sleeping bag and more if you want. You can also use it to cover your entire body when you’re in the hammock meaning you don’t need to get a top quilt or some other cover to go with it.

OneTigris Hammock Underquilt

For this price, you probably won’t find a better underquilt out there, and you can bet on that. It will satisfy most customers, but you might find that it has a couple of issues here and there. Besides the price, the first thing that impressed me about this underquilt was how easy it was to set up. I usually don’t have a lot of trouble, but if you do this will be a good timesaver. You also won’t have trouble making it fit with most hammocks as it can be adjusted without any issues. It is around 9′ by 4′ when unfolded, and that’s more than enough.

Why Buy an Underquilt?

This is a legitimate question, especially since there are other solutions that people use for hammock camping in cold weather. Using sleeping bags in combination with hammocks is a popular and inexpensive solution, but it is also an awkward one since it doesn’t properly protect and insulate you from the cold. They also have various other issues when used in this way, especially when compared to underquilts.

Underquilts work similarly to sleeping bags do but offer much more freedom and better insulation. They don’t wrap around your body, they wrap around the hammock itself, over and under it, trapping the heat inside while letting you move freely. You can also get out of the hammock much quicker if you need to. You will also find them to be lighter than sleeping bags and less awkward to place on your hammock.

Underquilts, as their name suggests, cover the bottom of the hammock, the area that needs the insulation the most. You can pair them with a top quilt or just a thick a cover to keep yourself warm in your hammock during the winter months. You should use them during other times of the year as well if you need to.

Besides keeping warm, underquilts can provide other benefits that will improve your experience when you camp in a hammock. For starters, you will feel far more comfortable in your hammock with a good underquilt since you will have a thick and soft base that you can sleep on. They have more uses as well!

The best underquilts are products you can use in a variety of ways, even if you opt to sleep outside of a hammock. You can use them as sleeping bags, for example, and they will often prove to be more comfortable than the traditional style of sleeping bag. If you want, you can also use them as covers when sleeping and you will find them quite warm since they provide you with great insulation.

Tips for Picking the Best Underquilt

Getting the right underquilt can be tricky, but there are a few useful things you should know and follow to get the best results. Here are some of the things you should look out for.

The Materials

This is one of the most important things to consider when picking an underquilt. You should ideally pick a durable material, something like ripstop fabric or nylon, to protect from tears during sleep or set up. The material should also be coated with water repellent since you are bound to encounter some moisture on your camping trips.

Insulation

You should make sure your hammock underquilt is properly insulated, so it protects you from the cold. You should know that insulation in an underquilt works a bit differently than in sleeping bags since it is not touching your body.

There are two main options to choose from – down-filled insulation or synthetic insulation. Both work fine and will protect you from the cold, but there are some differences between them.

Down-filled insulation is the traditional choice, and it is a rather lightweight option so that it won’t put much strain on your hammock. It is basically a feather filling, so it is super-light. However, it also costs more.

Synthetic options are much cheaper, but it is also heavier. It has another upside in the sense that it isn’t useless when it gets wet. However, you should take care that it doesn’t get wet in the first place.

Size

The last thing to consider is the size of your underquilt. There is no better or worse size per se since it all depends on what you need and the size of your hammock.

Some hammock underquilts might be able to cover only your torso and will leave a part of your feet exposed. Others will cover your whole body but will cost you a bit more – still, they are necessary if you want to camp in the winter. There are also stretchable options that will fit multiple different hammocks. In case you want them to fit a larger hammock for two people, there are also products which will fit you well.

In the end, just make sure to get the size you need and not something which will cover too little or too much.

My Choice

For me, the best hammock underquilt out there is the ENO Eagles Nest Outfitters – Ember 2 Under Quilt. It comes at a decent price, comparable to even the cheapest ones out there and it offers great quality. It is durable, and it has no setup issues like the Outdoor Vitals underquilt while also being lighter than the OneTigris product featured here.

It is of a decent size and comparable to other products while being adjustable and able to fit almost any hammock out there. It just can’t be beaten, and you probably won’t find a better deal out there. That’s why I..

Comparing an on-shore angler and a blue water angler when it comes to precision fishing has always had the former at a handicap. This is because on-shore anglers previously had no access to sonar gadgets to help them locate fish. They literally played a game of precision guessing. Thanks to the Deeper portable smart sonar fish finders, on-shore anglers can now benefit from precision fishing.

This fish finder allows you to practice precision fishing whether you are ice fishing, shore fishing or blue water fishing. This fish finder allows you to know where your target is and the right time to prepare yourself for the kill. Feedback from this sonar finder can be viewed on a tablet or smartphone, as long as you download the corresponding application.

Both the smart PRO and the PRO+ are compatible with tablets and smartphones running on Android 4.0 or iOS 8.0 or their predecessors. With the app, you get additional features such as the weather forecast, Solunar forecast calendar, fish notes, among others. You simply have to hook your sonar unit and cast it into the water and pay attention to your screen.

A key feature of this portable fish finder is the fact that it has a WiFi connection. This means that as long as your phone and your sonar finder are charged, you will be able to take it and use it anywhere. This is particularly useful since you are not reliant on cell reception to enjoy your fishing experience. The WiFi range for this device is 100 meters (300 feet).

The portable unit has a diameter of 6.5 centimeters (2.5 inches) and weighs 100 grams (3.5 pounds). It draws its power from a Li-polymer battery that takes two hours to be fully charged and gives six hours of running time. This compact fish finder can be charged using a 110v/240v micro USB charger. Besides, it uses 290kHz(150)/90kHz (550) dual beam sonar frequencies to find fish. It is capable of achieving a depth range of 80 meters (260 feet) in freshwater conditions.

When in boat mode, you can easily download and discover your location on free online maps. You are also able to do 15 scans per seconds and receive feedback on a high-resolution display. The split screen functionality is extremely helpful when using the fish finder for ice fishing. You can keep an eye on the activities of the water column as you monitor the sonar feedback. Boat anglers also benefit from getting feedback from those hard to reach areas.

The PRO+ allows you to create bathymetric maps of your own rather than relying on generic, free, on-line maps. This feature allows you to pay attention to details when mapping.

iBobber Wireless Bluetooth Smart Fish Finder

Via Amazon.com

The iBobber is a portable fish finder that is compatible with Apple devices. It is easy to use and pocket-friendly. Its compatibility with your already existing Apple device is a plus as you never have to worry about having to purchase expensive accessories just to control the iBobber or view its feedback. Another plus is that you do not need to carry any extra baggage in the form of extra accessories on your fishing trip.

This fish finder makes use of a weaker Bluetooth technology to connect to your phone thus saving on energy consumption. It helps to ensure the longevity of your phone’s battery life allowing you to go for a nice long fishing trip without constantly having to charge your phone. A power bank for your phone is, therefore, another accessory you do not need to worry about.

It has a diameter of 2.3 inches and weighs a total of 1.7 ounces. You can easily throw it into your rucksack or backpack or even pocket and be on your merry way. It looks much like a freshwater bobber in design.
This fish finder makes use of a 118kHz transducer that is capable of scanning water up to a depth of approximately 135 feet and sends feedback to a mobile device 100 feet away.

It can use the size of fish as a marker. It generally differentiates fish based on their lengths with 15 inches being the starting point. Anything above this point is categorized together while anything below it is grouped separately. The corresponding application can be installed and used on multiple devices without compromising on its functionality.

On top of its fish finding capabilities, you get access to additional features such as lunar calendars that tell you all you need to know about the wind speed, atmospheric pressure, possible rainy conditions, and temperature at any given time. Such information comes in handy when planning a fishing trip.

This way, you do not go out fishing in horrible conditions. It has a large, clear, high-resolution display that makes it easier to keep track of the sonar activity. The size of the display depends on the type of mobile device you are using. Smartphones will have a smaller display than ipads owing to the difference in screen size. The clear and high-resolution bits are standard.

Venterior VT-FF001 Portable Fish-Finder

Via Amazon.com

The Venterior VT-FF001 portable fish finder is perhaps one of the easiest fish-finders to use in the market today. This fish finder capitalizes on simplicity in its design and use of technology. Not all lovers of fishing are tech smart, and the manufacturer of this fish finder understand this.

Its package comes with all relevant accessories making it easier to install. This fish finder is also quite pocket-friendly retailing at a low price. Its long cable is particularly useful for boat anglers. It may, however, prove to be a challenge to kayak anglers. They may either be forced to shorten this cable or seek a model with a more suitable cable length. This particular fish finder is also known for its accurate readings.

Its display is simplified to allow even lay fishermen or newbies to angling understand it. The downside – it is not particularly good with details such as the size of fish detected. To compensate for this shortcoming, the manufacturers have made it such that you can tinker with its sensitivity to scan for only large or small fish. This is a plus when fishing in a zone with a cap on the size of fish you can legally catch.

Garmin EchoMAP CHIRP 53cv

Via Amazon.com

This fish finder makes use of CHIRP enhanced 2D and ClearVü sonar technology that operates on an HD-ID dual frequency. It comes with a 5-inch screen display that is backlit and boasts of a 480X480 pixel resolution. The 2D CHIRP sonar operates on a 15-240 kHz 240/160 frequency while the ClearVü operates on a 425-485kHz 2° fore to aft / 50° side to side, 790-850 kHz 1° fore to aft / 30° side to side frequency.

These frequencies are capable of achieving a scanning depth of 701 meters (2,300 feet) and 335 meters (1,100 feet) respectively. It comes with a four-pin CV22HW-TM transducer capable of giving up to 600 watts (RMS) and 500 watts (RMS) for the 2D and ClearVü frequencies respectively. The transducer is also compatible with trolling and transom motor mounts. The transducer cable is six meters (20 feet) long. It also comes with a temperature sensor that enables users to keep a temperature graph and log.

This fish finder is capable of giving more detailed feedback seeing that it can modulate sonar pulses over a frequency range rather than being limited to one frequency. This basically means that you can separate the wheat from the chaff when identifying targets within a group. ClearVü sonar technology is useful when observing shapes, structures, and contours due to its clear, photo-like imaging.

The split-screen feature allows you to receive feedback from the two frequencies operation simultaneously. For this to happen, you need to include a second transducer to cater for the second 2D channel. The optimum speed for clear imaging ranges between one mile per hour and six miles per hour. Speeds faster than 30 miles per hour will result in fuzzy images.

This fishfinder comes pre-installed with LakeVü high definition maps for 17,000 lakes, rivers and reservoirs within the U.S. other details included on this maps are the locations of boat ramps, marinas, docks, camping sites, roads and bridges as well as interstate boundaries. These maps also offer a shallow water shading function that makes it easier to map out the safest navigation routes as well as ideal fishing depths.

You also have the freedom to create maps of your favorite lakes or fishing spots thanks to the Quickdraw contours feature that makes use of the 2D sonar technology. It is compatible with LakeVü HD Ultra, BlueChart g2 Vision, and BlueChart g2 charts. With the first two charts, you can search for safe virtual routes and calculate your expected time of arrival to a given point.

Thanks to the 5 Hz GPS/GLONASS internal receiver, this fish finder is capable of giving accurate, real-time location reading of your vessel at all times. It is capable of storing a maximum of 5,000 waypoints, 50,000 track points, 100 routes and 50 tracks. This fish finder does not come with wireless connectivity capabilities. You can, however, transfer your data using a microSD card (slot available) or a data cable.

Best Hiking Boots for Wide Feet

Choosing hiking boots is all about personal preference. But if you have wide feet, then your options are limited. You have to find boots that fit, while still giving you enough comfort, protection, and traction. These three things should never be compromised.

As an important reminder, always pay attention to the size of the boots. Do not ever buy hiking footwear that is too loose or too small for you. It becomes painful to use, which will eventually ruin your trekking experience.

For people with wider feet, this could be a problem. Luckily, there are boots specifically made for wide feet.

1. Salomon Men’s Quest 4D 2 GTX Hiking Boot – The All-Rounder

Via Amazon.com

A great all-around purchase. This midweight boot offers a ton of water protection thanks to its Gore-Tex insulation and a mixture of leather and textile lining. The patented Salomon 4D chassis brings a lot of stability to the mix without sacrificing too much comfort. The laces are surprisingly durable and stay tied during the toughest climbs and pushes.

The dual-density EVA midsole is stiffer than a lot of midweight competitors, so your feet are supported in the harshest conditions. The rubber blend outsole provides amazing traction, which can be a literal lifesaver in a pinch if you’re climbing a terrifying rock face. The Salomon 4D boot is tall enough to protect your ankle.

The upper is made out of suede leather and nylon, ensuring a good bit of ventilation while retaining the durability leather is known for. However, due to its stiffness, it’s a bit hard to break in, especially for people with wide feet. If the boot fits, however, it is one of the most comfortable choices on the market. A pair weighs in at just under 3 pounds, but it feels much lighter than that, almost like it’s a lightweight pair of boots.

A potential downside here is that the sole is pretty thin overall, and you will feel every inch of the trail on your foot as you walk. It’s not a huge problem, but it does mean the boot has a different feel to many other competitors. These boots also get a bit hot during the summer, as the waterproof lining tends to keep a lot of that heat in.

PROS
  • Feels very light, especially for a midweight boot. You don’t have to spend a lot of energy to move around.
  • The combination of nylon woven mesh and suede leather resists abrasion extremely well.
  • Water resistant, as you’d expect from the Gore-Tex lining.
  • Excellent ankle support thanks to the boot’s height, which reduces the risk of injury and keeps you going for much longer.
CONS
  • The thin outsole can make the shoes uncomfortable for some.
  • The boots aren’t that easy to break in.
  • Some hikers claim this model is too aggressive for their needs.
2. Merrell Men’s Moab Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot – Budget-Friendly

Via Amazon.com

One unique attribute of this hiking boot is that it has dual layers for its uppers—textile and leather. Coupled with its waterproofing feature, this shoes is perfect for the cold and wet environment.

The soles are made of EVA. Thus, you can expect that this boot is comfortable and is flexible. Instead of actual lugs, the shoe sports lug patterns. The removal of lugs increases the flexibility of the shoe and maximizes comfort.

The uppers feature breathable mesh that allows moisture from the feet to escape while preventing water from entering the shoes. Nonetheless, moisture does not escape efficiently. In addition, it locks in heat, so your feet feel warm. We don’t recommend this boot for hiking in summer or hot areas.

Set up and relax, enjoy the ease of glamorous camping anywhere by bringing a pop up camper with bathroom. You’ll never have to worry about a lot of things again!

Okay so here again you are camping and you want to level up your camping experience. Glamping? Yeah, probably! You are sick of sleeping on the rocky ground and your back is really hurting?.

There are camping sites wherein you can’t even find a decent bathroom or outpost. Well, say goodbye to the inconveniences and say hello to luxury camping!

Why endure the cold weather when you can have a heater inside you rolling home? Or if you’re heading to a desert, an air-conditioner wouldn’t be that bad at all. This is definitely perfect when camping during the summer season. Why burn your skin under the scorching sun when you can be sheltered away from the heat and UV rays?

Bathroom

This will certainly turn your camping life 360 degrees… A full bathroom and shower!!! You don’t have to be afraid again of the bears attacking you like when in the middle of the night you want to come out of the tent because of the call of nature. Oh, the perks of having a pop up camper with bathroom.

If it is winter time or if the weather is frigid, you can keep yourself warm by showering with heated water. Thanks to propane, it heats the water so you won’t even have to ignite the fire to boil water.

You will never again have to dig a hole somewhere to do your customary loo routines. Now you can use a Thetford cassette toilet, one popular brand.

Kitchen

Hungry? Save your fingers from calluses. You don’t have to chop up some woods and constantly scratch a magnesium flint just to boil a cup of water for your coffee or to simply fry a piece of sunny side up egg.

A stove top is employed for you to cook from simple meals to the most lavish dishes. You can even bake a cake utilizing the full functioning oven. Who said you can’t enjoy a freshly-baked black forest cake in the middle of nowhere?

You ought not to risk your life hunting for a wild boar or chase a chicken like a caveman in a Paleolithic era. Shop for the spare ribs or your fave primal (meat) cuts from your local grocery store or at any of the local marketplaces like a civilized person would do.

Worry no more about availing the freshest ingredients or about the rotting meat. Just pop it in the refrigerator and you’re good to go. Forget about leftovers spoiling because the freezer/refrigerator got you covered.

Bedroom

Thou are kyphosis prone no more! Enjoy the comforts of your home by having the king size or queen size bed. You can even bring in two beds depending on the size of your pop up camper. It can accommodate about six to eight people.

If heated bed isn’t that cool enough…When there are elements outside, a bad weather or you just want a comfy dining place, the dining table and chairs installed won’t let you down.

Pests are pesky! Right!? Get rid of the bugs, the gnats or the sand flies. No-see-ums no more definitely! The pop up camper structure slip cover will cover you.

The pop up camper may have slip cover structures made out of vinyl or canvas or combination of both the vinyl and canvas construction. The vinyl is much more expensive than canvas. Vinyl is water resistant.

Canvas albeit could be made water resistant if applied and treated with chemical or material that could make it resist water. Canvas is made up of cotton fibers. During winter days, the canvas can be easily folded without chipping, cracking or damaging the fabric whilst the vinyl needed to be thawed, kept warm or be placed within the warmer house garage before folding.

Vinyl can easily crack up in wintry weather conditions whilst canvas can withstand the frigid weather. Inside the pop up camper, condensation occurs on the vinyl sheets as a result of cold weather. Vinyl can possibly have mildew build ups. Hence it must be wiped when wet in order to prevent that said occurrence.

Toilet

What is cassette toilet? In essence, it is a toilet bowl wherein there is a receptacle. A holding tank is essentially attached at the bottom of the bowl.

This receptacle underneath is detachable and easily dismantled. You may discard the human excreta at dump points by initially removing the dump cap of the pour-out spout. Open the spout, tilt the holding tank and pour the contents to eliminate disposals. Push the vent button to let air in as for to avoid guggling and splashing of water.

The lip seal slides close and open when flushing. You can use the Lube lubricants to apply at the bowl lip seal for maintenance. The lubrication allows the slick movement of the lip seal. In addition, this prevents leakage and it makes the lip seal last longer.

You may also make usage of the toilet cleansers that you must pour onto the same waterfill funnel spout wherein the fresh water is similarly passed through. Cleansers used must be mild so as not to damage your cassette toilet, or you have an option to utilize specialized chemical cleansers for the RV (recreational vehicles) toilets.

An example is Pro-Kleen Toilet Fresh, Flush. Some specialized RV chemical cleansers are also functioning as well to disintegrate the tissue papers.

Under no circumstances should you flush the nappies (disposable diapers) in the toilet. You can unwittingly clog your toilet because of that.

It is highly recommended to choose tissue papers that are soft and can be easily disintegrated. Or that it may be best that you use the tissue paper that is especially designed for cassette toilets and that easily dissolves. One brand available in the market is the Thetford Aqua Soft tissue paper. It can cost you a little more than the regular toilet papers but the convenience outweighs the costs.

You should need to prepare at least twenty (20) liters of water than can just merely be used for flushing the toilet for less than three days of camping.

Final Thought

Pop up campers are lighter in weight ergo, easier to tow than hard-sided trailers. Folding the components is just a breeze. It is certainly more affordable to purchase than the hard-sided trailer.

So now you have acquired more information about the pop up camper with bathroom, why not consider getting one for you, your family and friends?

Camping is always a really fun time because there is so much to do and so much to see. That being said you will be spending several days out in the woods so you do need to prepare adequately.

You need to prepare for things like the weather, bugs, and your own needs such as hunger and hygiene too. Here is a list of the top tips you can follow to make sure that you have a fun, warm, and safe camping trip.

1. Check Out The Terrain

One of the things that you should do before you go camping is to check out what the terrain is like. This is important because it will dictate what kinds of equipment and gear you bring on your camping trip.

For example, if you are going camping near a body of water the terrain is probably going to be wet, meaning that you will want to bring waterproof gear. On the other hand, if you are camping in the middle of a forest that is not near water, the conditions will most likely be dryer, but there will also be many rocks and sticks on the ground.

That means you will want to bring some soft sheets or even air mattresses with you to provide some comfort from the hard ground. Also if you are going camping at a high altitude you are going to want to bring warm gear.

2. What’s The Weather Forecast?

The next tip to follow before embarking on your camping trip is to check the weather forecast. This is important because it’s a lot nicer to go camping when it’s warm and sunny out than when it’s wet and cold.

Bad weather can completely ruin your camping trip. Times, when you should be extra diligent in terms of checking the weather, are in early spring and early fall. People like to go camping at those times, but it may get pretty cold, and that’s something that you are going to want to know.

Even if you are going to be camping in cold or wet conditions, at least if you check the weather first you can get a rough idea of what gear and clothing you should be bringing along. The weather will go a long way in dictating what kind of gear you bring along with you because even if you get stuck in a storm you will at least be prepared for it.

3. Getting The Right Sleeping Gear

Perhaps one of the most important things to consider before you start any camping trip is what kind of sleeping bag to bring with you. If it is going to be warm something like a basic sleeping bag that is thinner will do because if it’s too thick you’re just going to be hot the whole time.

On the other hand, if you know that it is going to be cold out when you go camping you will want to bring a sleeping bag with a lower temperature rating to keep you warm during the night. On a side note, you should invest in a sleeping bag that is machine washable because camping is usually a dirty affair so it needs to be easily washed.

Also, you would do well to get a sleeping bag with a built-in pillow so you don’t need to bring one of those along too.

4. Food And Drink

When you go camping you are of course going to need food and drink because after all there aren’t going to be any restaurants in the middle of the woods. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are camping in a territory that is home to bears you need to keep your food sealed in multiple layers of bags and to tie it high up in a tree branch.

If you don’t do this there is a good chance of attracting bears to your campsite. Also, try to bring foods that are easily heated on a fire or foods that can be eaten cold. Once again you probably aren’t going to have a full kitchen so you’re going to need to work with a fire and maybe a grill grate.

5. The Appropriate Clothing

This has to do with some of the previous points such as the weather and the terrain. Always make sure to bring the right clothing for the climate that you are going camping in.

If it is going to be colder you should bring some long sleeve shirts as well as full-length pants, which might be a good idea anyway because even the hottest of summer days can get pretty chilly at night.

You should also bring some kind of waterproof clothing in case it rains. On the other hand, you also want to bring along some shorts and t-shirts for the hot times, not to mention some swimming shorts too. On a side note, you may want to bring both sandals and real hiking boots, especially if you plan on taking some long walks through the woods.

6. Bug Spray

This one is extremely important because, in any place where there is a forest and water too, there will also be mosquitoes and other flying critters that love to suck your blood. Going camping without a good bug spray can effectively ruin your trip because you will spend your whole time swatting at the pesky critters.

The bites itch, they hurt, and they can get infected too. Also remember to get bug spray that has a high level of debt because that is what keeps the bugs away best. You can also try getting some citronella candles to place around the campfire for the night time.

7. Personal First Aid Kit

To be safe you will want to bring a basic first aid kit. Camping can be dangerous because there are all kinds of things that can happen to you. You can twist a leg, get cuts from sticks, scrape your feet on the rocks in the water, get bitten by bugs or bigger animals, or even get burned in the fire.

Bring along a first aid kit with basic supplies such as band aids, gauze, disinfectant, splints, and anything else that comes with a standard first aid kit.

Final Thought

The final thing to remember when camping is your own cleanliness. You may not be able to shower if you aren’t near a campsite and you definitely should be pouring a bunch of soap into the natural environment.

The best thing to do is to bring some sanitary wipes with you and some all natural biodegradable soap so you can wash in a body of water. Try not to bring things that have much of a scent because that will attract bugs and possibly larger predatory animals.

Using dry ice for camping has been a thought for some campers already. But only a few have tried to use one.

Regardless of what kind of container you are using, traditional ice will melt. This phenomenon happens because regular ice is from freezing water. Dry ice is different because it came from the carbon dioxide. This substance is found in your soda and even in the air you exhale.

Unlike regular ice, dry ice turns into water when it melts.

Many campers experienced that irritating moment of checking your cooler, and you touched water instead of ice. This problem is a tearjerker especially if you are on your long trip. You rely on ice to preserve the freshness of your food. But suddenly, it becomes your problem.

Using dry ice for camping is a 100% safe alternative for regular ice. There are no health risks to worry. Fishing companies are using dry ice to preserve fishes and meats which are easily rotten. Dry ice is an excellent alternative to regular ice because it is far colder–around negative 109 degrees Fahrenheit. It also doesn’t liquefy, so you don’t have to worry at all.

How To Use Dry Ice For Camping

Using Dry Ice For Camping

First of all, you should remind you that dry ice is far colder than regular ice. Do not put your food and drinks in a cooler that has dry ice days before camping. It will freeze them. The negative 109 degrees Fahrenheit is already past beyond freezing point.

Dry ice can last up to 24 hours. If you have suitable containers, its life span will last longer. Everything that is in the cooler will get frozen. If you have products that you intend not to freeze, do not mix them in the ice chest.

A regular dry ice has a dimension of a 10-inch square and has a weight of 10 pounds. You should consider the size of the dry ice if it can fit in your container. You can put one square of dry ice in every 15 inches of the ice container.

For longer camping time, you have to use larger ice containers or double the dry ice that you have.

Using dry ice for camping, you have to stick to your mind that things get frozen with it. Therefore, even if the dry ice sublimates, it will still take time for your goods to thaw. But that should not be a problem. As you camp outside, the heat of the sun will help you thaw that delicious food.

Way to Put The Dry Ice in The Cooler

First, you can place them above the food. This method is better compared to the other one. However, some prefer to have the dry ice to be at the bottom of the ice chest for convenience purposes. It is just your preference that counts.

Make sure that removed all empty spaces with a small lump of newspapers when you use dry ice. These dead spaces can make them sublime faster.

For storage, the best one is a urethane insulated box that is three inches thick. However, there are also other approved coolers to store dry ice. Just make sure that the cooler is sturdy and have additional insulation attached to their walls. Some coolers have unique built-in features for dry ice.

In addition, we will share this one amusing trick to you: Put linings of Styrofoam inside your container to lengthen the life of dry ice!

Sublimation, or the process of changing the solid mass into its gas state, depends on air pressure and temperature. The thicker your container is, the longer it will last. The more dry ice you have, the longer it will serve you. Strength in numbers!

You should also take note that when you will use dry ice for camping, make sure that your cooler is vented. An airtight container can cause the dry ice to explode!

When handling dry ice, you should wear leather gloves. Remember that you are touching a material that is below freezing point. Dry ice can burn your skin. And this cold burn is as painful as being burnt by the heat! If you can, do not let your children get close into the container to prevent unwanted injuries.

Transporting Dry Ice For Camping

Now that you have decided to use dry ice for camping, you should learn how to carry it. You should pick up the dry ice from its retailers the closest time that you need them. Preferably, you can pick them up on the day of your trip.

If you bring your sleeping bags, pack them near or around the cooler. Your sleeping bag has insulation on it to help the dry ice last longer.

If you put the cooler inside the vehicle and not on the trunk, make sure that there is fresh air. Somehow, it can affect your breathing. It may not be intoxicating, but it can make your breathing faster.

If your trip requires you to ride in an airplane, make sure that you have picked the dry ice to the closest departure time. Contain the dry ice in an insulated container. Many airlines will not let you carry more than two kilos of dry ice without special permission.

Dry ice will melt faster while on a flight because of lower pressure during high altitudes. Upon arriving at your destination, you can either refrigerate the remaining dry ice or add some more.

Conclusion

Dry ice for camping is a good idea. It is not messy, and it can preserve and refrigerate your food better than regular ice. It is safe to use with no health risks to worry.

Making your camping experience problem free is a priority. Using dry ice is an innovation that you should try for more convenience and ease.

The Animals

Don’t be surprised if a horse would just lie around your camp tent. Livestock animals such as cows graze in the meadows. Sheep are herded. Of course, free moving animals meander around, and you wouldn’t want to mess with them unless you want them to mess up with you, for which I doubt. Oh wait, don’t forget to bring the grahams and the mallows ‘coz we’ll collect woods and shrubs and burn ‘em in the pit and make that classic s’mores. Do you remember if you put that in the grocery list?

Be with the nature. Embrace the wildlife. Unleash the inner Bear Grylls in you!

Breathtaking view

This place is panoramic and picturesque. Before summer you can observe the wonder and beauty of the mountain alps. From the emergence of spring, you will then watch and witness as the wildflowers bloom.

The bodies of water
The water landscape adds the enchantment. You will be enraptured by the charm of this. Steady moving river flows on the rock bed. The waterfalls will make you oblivious of what burden the world has put on your shoulders.

The raging river slopes are just perfect for an afternoon kayaking. In a high altitude, certainly, the temperature is extremely low. Immersing in a hot spring provides instant warmth to the campers that experience the freezing cold atmosphere.

7. Dispersed Camping

Who does not want to get a bang with their buck? If you do not want to spend your hard earned cash for established campsites, why not camp out in dispersed camp locations. Just look out for traces that those indeed are designed for dispersed camping. Watch out though, some areas are restricted and owned by private citizens.

There might not be the facilities and amenities that you are hoping for but what the heck, you are there to camp and you know what I mean. There may have fire rings or lack thereof, and as I uttered, camping is unleashing the inner Bear Grylls. Think like you are a contestant of the game of “Survivor”, chopping up the wood, building shelter and the like. Leave no stone unturned!

There are other areas of restrictions. The wilderness areas are protected so that our children and grandchildren would still enjoy what Mother Nature has bestowed on us. Campers are merely allowed to camp 200 feet from the streams and rivers. In highly trafficked areas, campers are only allowed to settle ¼ mile or on a larger zone from the rivers and streams.

Garbage, urine, and human waste are discarded by irresponsible individuals into these water bodies and we don’t want that to happen to our wilderness, do we? Let us keep it pristine and crystal. Off the grid camping is the way to go. It is primitive. That is the true essence of camping, “au naturel” and disconnected from the mundane.

Nothing is better than the scent of the pine trees, the warmth of the freshly chopped burnt wood and the chirping of birds. Unwiring from the fast-moving modern world is what we all need. Once in a while, recharge, connect with the nature, speak with the animal creatures and stop and smell the flowers.

Final Thoughts

What are you waiting for? In the best campsite in Colorado, Oh Be Joyful Campground, Crested Butte, you can bring your camping gear and start rolling. That scenery is picturesque, and the adventures you can encounter are the bomb.
