This interview is about a young Ghanaian woman who was born and raised in the Netherlands. Her name is Abigail Mensah and she is twenty years old. Abigail previously studied Cultural Social Education at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Miss Mensah loves everything that has to do with hair and beauty. This interview will tell you more about her brand.

What kind of business are you running?

My brand is called AbyM.Stylez. I started this brand in 2017. This is a platform about hair and beauty for colored females. The main focus is for kinky and curly hair. I also have a product which is called AbyM Hair Oil. The platform that I own gives tutorials on how to take care of your hair and I also give beauty tips to females around the world. I do this in several ways. I have a YouTube channel where I give the tutorials as I told and I also give advice to people in my Facebook Group. I also have my own Facebook page where I put my content.

Why did you start this brand?

The reason why I started this, was because I saw that there is a gap in the market. There were not many hair products for colored people. De Kruidvat for example, has a few hair products for colored people, but the product range is not really big. A lot of beauty stores for colored people are not owned by them. Most of the time are those shops owned by Indian people which is not a bad thing, but they do not have the same knowledge about “black hair” as a colored person or a person with curly or kinky hair. I want to make a change with my product! I only have one product at this moment. Besides that, I also host hair and beauty events.

What kind of message would you like to spread through your brand?

I want to make a change with my brand. I think that it is important that the consumer knows what they buy and I think that I can do that with my knowledge about kinky and curly hair. I always tell young women that they should not be under pressure by (social)media. I noticed that a lot of young girls are comparing themselves with famous Instagram people and I always try to tell them that they are beautiful for who they are and that they should not look at how others look.

Who is your target audience?

Young colored women from the age of eighteen till mid-thirties who live in countries where the population of black people is high. For example: the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Most of my YouTube viewers are from the United States because my content is in English instead of Dutch. This gives me a bigger chance to reach more people.

What kind of responsibilities does a business owner have?

A lot! Sometimes you need to be professional in a setting which is not professional. That can be difficult sometimes. I have a target audience that watches me on YouTube and because of that, I have to take care how I act. I cannot be doing crazy things when I am at a party. I do not want to say that people see me as a YouTube figure, but they do take me seriously when I talk about hair and beauty topics. Another important thing is that your actions speak louder than your words. You cannot say something and not take your things into work.

What kind of tasks do you have for your business?

I am a beginning business, so there are not so many things that are being outsourced. The things that I do myself are the accounting, the production of my hair products, the promotion, booking of events and editing my content for YouTube. I do not depend on others and that is why I do it all myself. There are so many sources that can help you, that it is not really needed to outsource certain business activities. When I see that my business will grow, I have no choice and then I will outsource my tasks to others.

What kind of sales channels do you have?

I am still working on my website but customers can buy my products through social media and they can also buy my products through the events that I host. When I host or give seminars, I make sure that I bring my hair product with me so that people can buy it there as well. When people want to buy my product through social media or the email, I send it through the post.

What can you do with your product?

You can use my products for your hair which gives you a better stimulation to grow your hair. Men can use it for their beard to grow and you can also use it if you have a dry skin. My products are available in two formats: 10ml and 50ml.

How do you see yourself in five years?

If I put in the work as now times ten, I will sell my products in many stores around the world. I will be giving a lot of shows and spread my mission and vision to others. Also, will I be able to have employees for my company. I would also like to expand my product range with hair shampoo, face masks, body lotions and more.

YO GUYS!?

Kon ta bai!? How are you all doing? It has been a while and I know… But peeps, Y’all don’t know how busy I was in the past months. I had to do so many things for school and my work placement, that I couldn’t create any content for my blog during that time. However, I am glad to be blogging again cuz your homeboy has completed his work placement successfully and I am back from vacay.

As you can see from my title, I went to Curaçao (Kòrsou in local language). Men… This trip really did me well. I really love Curacao! It is such a nice island with a rich culture.  The locals are really friendly and you know what’s hella funny? They did not see me as a tourist lol. 9/10 times, they either spoke Papiamento or Spanish to me. But it’s not strange at all. Curaçaoan people are very diverse. The majority of the population over there are of African descent and the original inhabitants are Arawaks. But there are also Latin Americans and other West Indians that have settled in Curaçao.

During my vacay, I stayed at Morena Eco Resort in Jan Thiel which was perfectly located for me. It was nearby the beach and it was also nearby Willemstad where most of the shops are located. I Haven’t done a lot during my trip, to be honest with Y’all. I only took a visit to Willemstad and I went to numerous beaches in Curaçao. But that was fine to me. I’ve been to Jan Thiel beach which was 5 minutes away from the resort. It is a nice beach but very touristy. I also went to Playa Porto Marie. That beach is very beautiful and the funny thing about it is, that there are pigs walking around haha. I also went to other beautiful beaches like Playa Kenepa Grandi, Playa Marie Pampoen, and Playa Grandi. Willemstad is also interesting. It is basically split into two main boroughs which are Punda (point) and Otrobanda (the other side). The architecture in Punda is very similar to the architecture in the Netherlands. Punda is chicer and more directed to vacationers compared to Otrobanda. Otrabanda, on the other hand, is more authentic and lively.

The only disadvantage about this island is that everything is so pricey. Even outside the touristy places, you’ll see prices that make you shook. Curaçao might be a bit of an expensive trip to plan, but guys, I highly recommend you all to go there! It’s defo a place you have to see once in your lifetime. (TIP: Book your tickets during Werelddeals via KLM)

Down below, I have some pics of my vacay. You can also my Instagram Highlights for other pictures and short vids of my trip :).

Playa Kenepa Grandi

Playa Kenepa Grandi

These abuelitas make the best batidos (fruit shakes) in town, TRUST ME! You can find them in Otrobanda, opposite the Pontjesbrug.

Otrobanda

Caught off guard – Otrobanda

Handelskade – Punda

Playa Marie Pampoen – This isn’t the most beautiful beach in my opinion, but this is the only beach where you will find lots of locals and where you can really feel that Caribbean vibe. AND this beach has also a delicious local restaurant where you can eat cheap!

Playa Grandi – This beach has a lot of turtles! It is definitely worth a visit.

How would you define “The Plug NL”?

The Plug NL is an affordable streetwear brand and innovative at the same time. The brand is also very versatile!

Why did you choose to name your brand “The Plug NL”?

For those who don’t know what the plug means… The definition of the plug is a supplier or provider (normally in terms of drugs). In this case, I “supply” or “provide” dope streetwear clothing.

So what made you start owning a business and when did you start with this business?

I wanted to be independent and I also realized that most streetwear brands were way too overpriced. That’s why I wanted to start my own business.

When did you start with your business?

I started my business last year November.

Who are your main inspirations in terms of fashion?

That’s a difficult question, to be honest, but DJ Khaled is one of my biggest inspirations. It’s not only his music that I admire, but it’s also the way he dresses. I love the fact that he always looks clean in tracksuits. There aren’t many people that can look stylish in a tracksuit.

Will you be teaming up with other brands in the future?

Yes!! I will team up with a British brand called “KxQ – Kings X Queens”. They are also a streetwear brand. We had lots of convo’s about the fashion industry and about collaborations. So stay tuned!!

Make sure to follow @theplugnl on Instagram. If you want to make an order, DM @theplugnl on Instagram!

Yo guys,

In this post, I’m going to tell something about this new shoe brand called J.LEGACEE which I teamed up with! This dope brand was established in 2017 by two friends named Jeffrey Platteel and Jeremy Bruno.

J.LEGACEE is a Dutch brand that is handcrafted in Portugal. It is a unisex shoe which comes in three different lines (Sports, Essentials, and Lux).I had the chance to try them on before picking out a model. Ultimately I choose for the Sports line.

I really love this brand because It’s so easy to wear. I can wear them with a smart casual outfit but I can also wear them easily with a streetwear outfit. The colors give it a nice minimalist feel and it matches well. The materials that are being used are nubuck, suede, and leather. The insoles are made of leather as well. It makes sure that you’ll have good support for your back and feet which makes it very comfy to wear!

But those aren’t the only reasons why these creps are slick. I am so happy to see a sneaker brand that is different from others. It’s the whole product that makes them original. I haven’t seen a sneaker brand that has a huge sneaker box like J.LEGACEE or a sneaker brand that also gives you a fragrance… Like isn’t that cool?

You can cop you a pair of J.LEGACEE’s in various stores like Baskets, curated.for.store, X BANK, and many more. Wanna know how I rock my J.LEGACEE’s?  Check my pics down below and make sure to follow curated.for.store and J.LEGACEE on Instagram to stay updated!

Peace out!

London Fashion Week Men’s was the first fashion week to kick off this year. LFWM 2018 started on the 6th and it ended on the 8th of January. Fashion week in Amsterdam is nothing compared to the fashion weeks in Paris, London, Milan and New York. I’ve only been to the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Amsterdam but it’s one of my biggest dreams to experience fashion week in one of the fashion cities like London for example.

In the future, there might be a chance for me to visit one of those fashion weeks but for now, I’ll stick to watching the shows on my laptop and giving my viewpoint of the collections and looks of certain brands.

Oliver Spencer

I’m more a streetwear type of guy, but I am diggin’ the collection of Oliver Spencer a lot. By the way, this is the A/W 2018 collection of Spencer. As I said before and I’m going to say this again, I really love this collection! It’s very timeless and classy. Not too classy, It’s more smart casual… I love the fact that almost all trousers in this collection are cropped, cuz I love cropped trousers. The left look is my most favorite look of this collection. Do you want to see the whole collection? Click here.

Christopher Raeburn

I like Christopher Raeburn as a designer a lot. His designs are fresh, innovative and also sustainable. I think that it is very important to be sustainable. Especially at this time where a lot of businesses aren’t operating ethically. This collection is very streetwear’ish and easy to wear on a daily basis. I could see myself wearing all these looks! What I also love about Raeburn is his usage of colors. He combines bright colors with dark colors which makes a nice balance. You can check his whole collection here.

COTTWEILER

Ben Cottrell and Matthew Dainty are the iconic duo of COTTWEILER. They have collaborated with big names like FKA Twigs, SkeptaHolly Herndon and more. What I like about COTTWEILER is that they combine technologic designs with a sportive vibe. I love the fabrics that they used for this collection as well. The middle look is my most favorite look of this collection because I really feel the full nylon sports gear (I’m not sure if it is made of nylon, correct me if I’m wrong). Check the whole A/W 2018-2019 collection here.

Those were my 3 favorite designers of LFWM 2018. Check out all the designers on http://www.londonfashionweekmens.com

Today I’m back with another post. My homeboy and I are going to show you all our daily look. It’s simple but we always make sure that our shoe game is on point, cuz that’s the most important thing of course. I’m also writing about his passion for sneakers and streetwear.

Down below you can see some outfit pics of my homeboy Aziz. He is a true sneakerhead and especially a Nikehead (although he wore Adidas in the pics lol). He just started a YouTube channel named SneakY by AEZY where he’s going to talk about sneakers and streetwear. Things that you might discover on his YouTube channel are reviews, unboxings and more. I love his drive and passion for sneakers and that’s why I asked the homie to link up and make some pics. I’m all about uplifting others, especially when I have the same interest. So guys Y’all better subscribe to his channel and follow him on his IG: @aezy.swoosh!

His brown wool jacket is from the Weekday and his grey hoodie from Polo Sport. His jeans are from Zara and his shoes are from Adidas x Yeezy collection. His look is easy to wear on different occasions. It’s simple and clean at the same time!

My outfit, on the other hand, is very dark. My trouser and Snoop Dogg tee are from H&M. My black denim jacket is from a vintage store and my gilet is from the Zara. Because I wore dark colors, I decided to wear outstanding sneakers to compensate it. The yellowish color of my shoes matches very well with my tee. My shoes are by the way from Raf Simons x Adidas.

Hey guys! How are you?

I’m back with another playlist. This playlist contains songs what I always listen when I’m on my way to school or home. I don’t know why, but it seems like that every season has a big impact on my listing behavior. In the summer I usually listen to music genres like Dancehall and Deep-House (because of the vibe).

But these days I listen to a lot of smooth Neo Soul, R&B, and Hip-Hop. You know… Just mellow music that makes you calm and where you can vibe to. These kind of tunes are nice to listen in the early morning when you’re on your way to school or work but also late at night!

Follow That Urban Lifestyle on Spotify and check the complete playlist here.

PATTA

The literal translation of Patta means sneaker in Sranang Tongo (a spoken language in Suriname).  Patta is a sneaker store, but they also sell clothing. This is definitely one of my most favorite sneaker stores in Amsterdam. Just because I love their sneaker collection. What I also like about Patta is that they always collab with other brands! They had lots of collabs with international brands like Nike, Asics, and Vans. You are at the right address if you dig exclusive sneakers!!

NO BOYS ALLOWED

This sneaker store is for all the ladies who are into sneakers! But also for the fella’s who got smaller feets. What I like about “No Boys Allowed” is that most of their sneakers are colorful, poppin and bright. In this store, you can find sneaker brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma and more. You can visit this store in Amsterdam and The Hague.

BASKETS

Baskets is a sneaker and apparel store that’s located in Amsterdam and The Hague. This store has sneakers that you could wear if you have a streetwear kinda look but they also have sneakers that are a bit more high end (but also not at the same time if you know what I mean haha…) What I love about this store is that you can find all kinds of sneakers. Their assortment exists of brands like Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Asics and some other brands.

SOLEBOX

Solebox is originally a German sneaker store, but since last year they finally opened a store in my hometown Amsterdam. What I really dig about this store is the interior. Solebox Amsterdam is furnished like a laboratory and it is, in my opinion, the most beautiful sneaker store in the 020.

ETQ STORE

First, when I heard that ETQ would open a store, I thought that they would only sell ETQ sneakers. I made that link that a flagship store would only sell sneakers of its own brand. But that’s not the case for this store. They have brands like Adidas, Puma, Vans and some other brands. I do have to say that they do not sell Nike sneakers, but believe me… As a Nike head, I can say that their sneaker assortment is really dope (especially their brand ETQ).
