The Summit Salon Academy in Tacoma offers cosmetology and esthetics courses for driven, aspiring beauty pros. The Summit Salon Academy's goal is to graduate highly trained professionals who are prepared to work in 21st Century Salons and Spas.
At Summit Salon Academy, we’re celebrating our fourth annual Hair BRA-Zaar event. For the past four years, Summit has hosted this event where students decorate a bra and create an entire look based on that bra. This year’s theme is “Under the Big Top”, which encourages students to create a circus-themed look. Not only will our students be able to show off their creativity, but they will also be helping our community! All the proceeds from this event will go to the Wings of Karen Foundation, a nonprofit organization that’s dedicated to researching breast cancer here in the Pacific Northwest. This nonprofit was started by an amazing woman, Kristi Blair. After her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, Kristi later discovered that she had been diagnosed with it herself. As the founder of this nonprofit, Kristi hopes to make a difference in the world. Read more to learn about Kristi and her amazing journey!
Inspiration for This Foundation
After her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, Kristi made it her mission to learn more about it and how she could help her mom through it. “I started to really follow what these researchers and doctors were doing,” she says. “[I] really became quite self-taught in understanding how to read all these scans and blood work and it became my own personal mission to understand cancer.” After a courageous battle with cancer, her mom passed away and since then Kristi has done amazing work to make sure that her mom’s legacy lives on. Wings of Karen is named after her mother, Karen Denmark.

Starting the Research
To honor her mom, Kristi started getting mammograms every year on her mother’s birthday. Worried at first that she was being too paranoid, Kristi discovered she had breast cancer at age 34. Although this news scared her, Kristi decided that she needed to do something active and positive with this information. At the time, doctors were researching vaccines for breast cancer and Kristi decided to contact them, letting them know her desire to help further their discoveries. Doctor Disis, who worked on this project, showed Kristi how she’s making progress with the vaccines.
“Having a vaccine for breast cancer is enormous,” she says. Kristi believes that a lot of people fear cancer because of the treatments, and that’s why she was grateful to participate in research that aims to prevent cancer through a vaccination. Kristi was able to help doctors learn more by taking the vaccine, which she says is just like a shot. After three years of treatment, she is now doing what she can to help further this research for the future.
Continuing to Learn More
Since Kristi, her mom, and her aunt have all had breast cancer, she wants to do her part in making sure that the proper research is done so future generations can have a cure. With four daughters, Kristi hopes that this research can even help prevent them from getting it as well. That’s why she encourages people to donate to this cause. Kristi says researchers at the University of Washington believe that with the proper funding, they can provide a prevention to this disease within a decade. “[The University of Washington] Medicine is doing inspiring work. Without funding research, you really can’t count on any cures,” she says. “Truly we are being held from a treatment that could possibly keep someone alive because of money.”

We know that our students are some of the most hard-working and determined individuals. Watching them accomplish their goals is a highlight for us at Summit Salon Academy. That’s why we love this time of month, when we get to spotlight one of our fabulous students! This month we’re highlighting Anita Carroll.
Anita started a beauty education with us in January of this year. Before that, she was teaching preschool. So why did she decide to pursue an education in beauty? Anita says that she wanted to do something that allowed her to meet new people and she found that the beauty industry is a great way to do that. “I love connecting with people,” she told us. “I want to make other people feel good about themselves.” We’re so happy that Anita can make others feel good and do what she loves in the beauty industry.
Why Summit Salon Academy
Anita loves that the beauty industry lets her do something she’s passionate about, while also uplifting the people around her. We asked her what made her choose Summit Salon Academy. She says that once she saw our salon, she knew that this was the place where she wanted to study beauty! “[My] friend went to [Summit Salon Academy],” she told us. “And when I came in for a service, it made me want to go here too.” We are so happy that people who want to study beauty, like Anita, can walk into our salon and feel like it’s where they need to be.
Even though Anita just started studying beauty with us in January, she’s already learning a lot of valuable lessons. She told us that one of the most important lessons she’s learned is understanding what questions she should ask a client in a consultation. This shows Anita’s passion for connecting with other people and her determination to provide her clients with a haircut they love. We are so happy that she chose to study her passion with us!
Using Social Media for Beauty
Anita knows just how important social media is for beauty students. In fact, if she could give advice to new students she says using social media is one recommendation she’d give. “Make a page or account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, everything,” she told us. “Post everything you do!”
Since she started using her social media accounts to promote her work at beauty school, Anita says that she’s seen a big difference in her number of followers. She tries to post everything she does as a beauty student with hashtags and she encourages people to do the same. We are so proud of the work she’s done so far, and we can’t wait to see what else she accomplishes!
You can follow Anita on Instagram to see the amazing work she does at @cosmo.anita

On June 5th 2019, we’re hosting our fourth annual Hair BRA-Zaar event. We’re super excited for this year’s BRA-Zaar because the theme is “Under the Big Top”! That means our students will be creating their best circus-themed looks and taking them to the stage. Since this is a fundraising event for breast cancer, students will also be wearing beautifully decorated bras as they walk the runway.
All the proceeds of this event will go to the Wings of Karen Foundation, a local breast cancer research organization here in the Pacific Northwest. This grassroots organization believes every donor should know where their money is going. They’re committed to finding and cure and providing women of all ages with proper breast cancer education.
Earlier this year, Summit Salon Academy owners Michael and Karen Shea visited The University of Washington and presented the oncology department with the proceeds from last year’s event. These funds will help the department continue their breast cancer research. Visiting the university was an incredible opportunity that we hope to be able to repeat in 2020!
We are so proud of our students and the hard work and dedication they put into what they do. That’s why we love having the opportunity to recognize our students individually. It’s that time again and this month we’re spotlighting Nicole Bellinger!
Why Summit Salon Academy
Before Nicole started school at Summit Salon Academy, she was going to community college and working part-time. So why did she make the switch and enroll here? Nicole says that hair, lashes, eyebrows and anything else beauty related have always interested her.“So I decided, why not make my career about something I love.” she told us. “I heard [Summit Salon Academy] was one of the top beauty schools in Washington state, so I decided to check it out for myself and I loved it.” We are honored that she chose us to fulfill her passion for beauty.
Her Experience in School
Nicole loves the creative liberty that she’s allowed whenever she comes to school. At cosmetology school, she can feel proud of the creative work she’s able to give to people. One of the best parts of this career is seeing people light up when they see their new hairstyle. Nicole also said that she has learned a lot of valuable life lessons since enrolling at our school. “I learned that it’s always important to listen to your educators and always be willing to try new things”, she told us. That’s the great thing about learning beauty, there’s always room to grow.
Nicole has been a student at Summit Salon Academy for four months and she’s already learning as much as she can. She wants to study everything about beauty and she encourages others to do the same. Her advice to anyone who is looking to become a new student is to take advantage of your time at beauty school. “Be open to learning new things and discovering new ways to do things and have fun”, she says. “Because you should also be having fun.” Nicole’s enthusiasm to try new things is what makes her a great student!
Beauty Through Social Media
Social media is a great way to get your reputation as a credible beauty stylist out in the world and Nicole can attest to this. Before getting involved in beauty, Nicole only used her Instagram for personal use. Now she’s able to have an account that lets her show off what she’s able to do as a cosmetologist. “I was surprised that my beauty Instagram already has 150+ followers”, she says. “All my friends as well as others are interested in my work, and are very supportive as well.”
She loves putting her work out there and tries to post once or twice each week. Her advice to other students is to post everything they can. “Always stay active on social media because that’s the best way to stay in touch and relevant to people who you don’t see or interact with on a daily basis.”
We’re thrilled to announce that one of our students, Erica Oreszko, has been awarded the Summit Salon Business Center Scholarship! Ten scholarships of $1,500 were awarded to exceptional students who submitted responses in the form of an essay or a video. Applicants were asked to answer questions about using Summit Salon Business Center resources to build their business during school and after graduation.
Congratulations, Erica! This is just another example of the incredible potential of our students here at Summit Salon Academy.
Summit Salon Academy Tacoma owners Michael and Karen Shea visited the University of Washington School of Medicine to present the funds we raised at 2018’s Hair BRA-Zaar event in conjunction with the Wings of Karen Foundation. The check was given to Dr. Nora Disis, an esteemed professor in the oncology division of the university and recipient of the Helen B. Slonaker Endowed Professorship for Cancer Research.
Michael and Karen were invited to tour the oncology lab and see where all of the cancer research happens. It was an incredible opportunity to see such brilliant minds and huge hearts at work. At Summit, we’re always looking for ways to give back. We hope that we can continue to work with UW Medicine in the future and help with the fight against breast cancer!
“We’re proud of our students and staff for the contributions they’ve made in the efforts to find a cure for breast cancer!” Karen says. “We’re proud to be warriors in this fight with Wings of Karen.”
The 2019 Hair BRA-Zaar event is on June 5th. Check out last year’s post to see what it’s all about!
It’s the month of love and it’s time to show some appreciation to another fantastic student! We love this opportunity to spotlight exceptional individuals at our school. For February’s social promoter of the month, meet Kaiti Markuson!
Kaiti’s Experience in School
Kaiti chose to study cosmetology at Summit Salon Academy because her trusted friend recommended it to her. Once she said the name Summit Salon Academy Tacoma, Kaiti knew it was the right choice. “I signed up that day and was touring very soon after,” she says. “I liked the vibe of the salon and knew I’d found my home away from home for the next 12 months.”
Even though she’s less than six months away from graduating, Kaiti still appreciates the challenges of beauty school. “Color correction was such a challenge. It was super overwhelming at first and I ran into a lot of speed bumps along the way,” she says. “Those bumps turned into lessons and ultimately I feel like I learned the most with that assignment.
The beauty industry is all about making changes. That’s what Kaiti loves about it. From cutting off entire ponytails and shaving heads to creating beautiful balayage, she’s all about the transformative power of beauty. “I feel like I’m back in art class just freely painting on the hair,” she says. “I’m confident that I’ll continue to get better at this. The sky is the limit.” As someone who thrives on connection, she also loves that the beauty industry gives her the chance to really be herself. Kaiti wants her clients to trust her and leave happy, so she does her best to listen to needs and create positive energy while making someone’s vision come to life.
Kaiti as a Stylist
As a level three stylist at school, Kaiti is almost prepared for an externship. She hopes that wherever she externs can turn into a career as an associate stylist. “I’m extremely grateful and excited for what’s to come,” she says. “The energy I bring to a salon is unique. I have a passion for what I do, a genuine interest in people and making them feel good. I bring that to work with me every day.” Kaiti graduates from Summit in June 2019 and can’t wait to put her talent, confidence, and bubbly personality to good use!
It’s time to celebrate another one of our incredible students here at Summit Salon Academy! We have such a hardworking, talented student body. Spotlighting specific individuals on our blog is a great way to show our appreciation to their hard work. This month’s Social Promoter of the Month is Olena Tomyeva!
Olena Tomyeva has been a student at Summit Salon Academy for four months. She plans to graduate from the cosmetology program in October 2019. Before she even considered attending beauty school, Olena was a dental assistant, so she already has a professional background. She chose to make the switch to cosmetology because she’s always been passionate about beauty and doing hair.
Summit was Olena’s school of choice not only because of its convenient location, but because of its professionalism. Our cosmetology curriculum is ideal for career-focused individuals, as it focuses on heavily on the business side of the beauty industry. These skills are crucial for any student who wants to prepare for the future! Currently, Olena considers haircuts to be her strongest skill at school. She says that practicing on real guests/mannequin heads has been the most helpful in improving those skills.
As she progresses toward graduation, Olena wants to do the best work possible. “I have integrity and will do my best to make my client happy,” she says. “My passion for this [sets me apart], I really love what I do.” Olena is looking forward to working in a salon after graduation from Summit. She advises any incoming students to be determined and committed to their education if they want to find success.
You can follow Olena on Instagram at glamhair_by_olena!
We’re proud to announce that one of our students, Annie Bromberg, received the prestigious Joe Francis scholarship for 2018! The Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship Foundation has awarded 384 scholarships to cosmetology students over the past 21 years. Joe Francis started this scholarship foundation to help students launch their career and achieve self-fulfillment.
Congratulations, Annie! The team at Summit is so proud of your accomplishment!

Here are a few reasons why you should make 2019 the year you begin your beauty education with us.

At our school, you can learn and grow with other students who are just as obsessed with beauty as you are. When you’re learning with similar people, it’s a great opportunity to make friends, share ideas, receive advice, and form lasting connections.
