Fun Ways to Use Brushes Tutorial uses Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 5 on Windows 7

This tutorial will give you some creative ideas on how to use Brush Set: Travel Stamps, but also applies to other brush sets.

If you are new to brushes, then you might think there is only one way to use a brush. Like this:

But did you know you can also create these?

If you want to level-up your use of brushes, then follow along!

    1. Grunge them up.

Samples 1 and 3 have a distressed, worn look that can be achieved by simply using a grunge or distressing brush. First, load both ABR files for ACU_Brsh_TravelStamps and a grunge or distressed style brush set into your Brush palette.(See below for Grunge style brush suggestions)

With your Foreground Color set to the desired color, click the Brush tool, select your chosen travel stamp, and brush it into a blank layer. To distress, click on the Eraser tool and select the distressing brush from the drop-down box. You can now erase parts of the Travel Stamp that you want to look worn.

    2. Do selective coloring.

A brush will take on whatever color you have set in the Foreground color box. This means a brushed-on layer will have only a single color. Coloring individual parts of a brush, such as in Sample 5, will entail an extra step or two. Here is how you do it:

With your stamped layer active, select the Magic Wand tool and hold down the Shift key while clicking on the parts you want to recolor. You will see the “marching ants” highlighting your selection. When you are satisfied with your selection, fill with color using Edit > Fill > Foreground Color. You can also use the Lasso tool to select parts to isolate and color.

       3. Fill the transparent parts.

In Samples 1-3, the transparent parts of the brushes are filled. Filling these parts allows us to clip papers and apply styles, giving our brushes a totally different look!

Filling the transparent parts is easy! First, create a shape in the layer below your Travel Stamp; it doesn’t matter what shape because we will be cutting away any excess later. Just make sure the shape you choose is bigger than the stamp itself in order to fill all the transparent parts of the brush. Next, rasterize the shape layer by clicking Layer > Rasterize > Shape. In PSE: In the Tool Options, click Simplify.

On the brush layer, click anywhere outside the brush. Make the rasterized shape layer active and hit Delete. Now you can clip a paper to the remaining shape or apply styles.

In Sample 3, I clipped a paper from my Sweet Love Collection Mini and used the bonus brush to subtly distress the stamp. I also slightly enlarged the shape to give my new embellishment a small border, finishing it off with a drop shadow.

I hope this tutorial has given you some helpful tips on how to use Brush Set: Travel Stamps.

This month, we asked the designer behind Aftermidnight Designs to step into the Designer Spotlight and tell us what makes her designer heart tick (plus a few other tidbits that will make you smile)! Discover her designing inspiration, how she got into designing, and most importantly to you — which of her amazing products have made it to her “Fave 10 Sale” this week! You can get these items for 40% off while she is in the spotlight. So, come along, get to know this fun designer a little more — then load up your cart with her favorites before the sale ends 7/10/19.

What’s your favorite kit and why?

I actually have two favorites, the Value Pack Afternoon Tea and the and the Value Pack Age of Chivalry. Afternoon Tea is because I like the watercolor embellishments in that one, and the Age of Chivalry is because I could use some of my family history as inspiration.

Where does your inspiration come from?

From a lot of things: music, art, books I read, family history, and my own watercolors.

What’s on your desk?

My computer, of course, and a bottle of water, a cup of tea — and a lot of papers, pens, calendars….

Where do you call home?

For the time being, I live in Sweden but I used to live in Holland, and before that, in France.

How long have you been designing and how did you get into it?

I started making cards and tags about 10 years ago, but since I have an education from an art school, I always been drawing and painting. I started drawing when I was a small child.

What’s your favorite part of the day?

I don´t have a favorite part of the day. The whole day is good as long as I can do what I want to do — and that´s designing kits and painting with watercolors. Since I don´t work outside the home, I have the whole day for that!

Check out these favorite products — on sale for 40% off through 7/10/19

Our owner/designer/fearless leader Angie Briggs has done it again! She’s the queen of blending and grunge around here, and she’s pulled from the depths of her endlessly creative soul to bring us the June ScrapSimple Club: Grungology — which is literally (and figuratively) a study in how to make grunge work wonders on your next layout: “With Grungology, the opportunities are endless. Since you have control of the final outcome using Blending modes, opacity, and fill, these overlays and templates will work for a soft, flowery project to add definition and highlight, as well as on a male project. The items in this club are perfect for adding texture/definition to photos.”

Discover more about Angie’s club by peeking into her behind-the-scenes comments below.

Behind the Scenes Tidbits

What the club theme means to her: “Grunge and grungy items are something I want people not to be afraid of. By working with templates and Blending modes (and also fill/opacity), you can make your final creation as grungy or “not grungy” as you’d like.”

The product she thinks will be the most versatile: “Textures – I LOVE textures! You can use them on papers, photos, and more.”

An Amazing Deal!
If you were to buy all of the items in the club individually from the Boutique they would cost $19.15 and we offer it to you for just $6.99 a month!

It’s a grand, old flag, it’s a high-flying flag — and it’s center stage on our Take 3 feature this month. We’re flying Ginny Whitcomb’s Big Bang Collection for you to gaze at and let your creativity take flight. This month’s Take 3 features sample layouts and insights from Andrea, Marie-Christine, and Shauna. And because we know how much you love a sale, you’ll find this kit on sale for 50% off until July 3rd.

Marie-Christine: I absolutely love this collection with its vibrant colors and the wonderful feeling of celebration and festivities. This kit is suitable for any occasion with all the embellishments, alphas, and, of course, the patriotic theme works for all of your Fourth of July photos. It’s truly a fun collection.

Andrea: This collection will never age! I love the grunge as well as the clean design. I fell in love with Ginny’s Big Bang Collection, especially the elements and the papers,  when it first appeared in the Scrap Girls store. It’s festive and can be used for birthdays, too (boys, girls, and even adult layouts).

Shauna: I love patriotic kits! The color combo works for boys or girls, and, of course, the color scheme is always fun for summer layouts. When I saw the Big Bang Collection, I was immediately drawn to it, but I think the worn papers are what sealed it for me. They are just so awesome! I had such fun with this kit, and I know I will use it over and over again.

Getting the Most Out of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Travel Buttons Tutorial uses Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 5 on Windows 7

This tutorial will give you some ideas on how to use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Travel Buttons, but also applies to other template designs.

So, let’s get started!

   1. Use the icons as stamps.
The first example is pretty simple – you can use any of the travel icons as a stamp by filling it with your chosen foreground color. (Sample 1)

   2. Create a button.
The template set comes with a fully-assembled button in a PSD file as well as individual PNG files. It includes the frame, button, and ring. To customize these, just use the Hue and Saturation sliders or “Color Overlay” Blending mode to recolor them.

After you have recolored your button, all you have to do is choose your icon, color as desired, and position it on the button. (Sample 2)

    3. Add text.
You can also add text to your button design, like I did in Sample 3

    4. Apply styles.

To add further depth and dimension to your button, apply any of bonus layer styles (ScrapSimple Styles – Tools: Travel Buttons Mini 13001) included in this set.

First, make sure the styles set is loaded into your Styles palette by dragging the ASL file into your opened Styles window. With the icon layer active, start by coloring your icon as desired. Then apply a style by simply clicking on the chosen style in the Styles window.

Here’s a look at each style:

Note that the sticker style does not include a drop shadow. If you want to apply a drop shadow to the sticker, first flatten the style by creating a new blank layer below the styled layer, make the styled layer active, then click Layer > Merge Down. You can then apply a drop shadow to this merged layer.

Aside from these bonus styles, you can also apply other styles available in the Scrap Girls Boutique. In Sample 4, I used ScrapSimple Styles-Distressed Retro Brights 13001 Super Biggie.

   5. Create other types of embellishments.

Apart from buttons, stamps, and stickers, you can also create other types of embellishments. Mix and match pieces from the various borders and icons included in this set and create unique pieces to suit your needs. Experiment by clipping papers and applying styles. Your imagination is the only limit!

In Samples 5 & 6, I used papers from my Boo! Collection and applied ScrapSimple Styles – Distressed Retro Brights 13001 Super Biggie, as well as ScrapSimple Styles – Plastic 13001 Super Biggie.

I hope this tutorial has given you some helpful tips on how to use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Travel Buttons

This month, we asked Marlene Peacock to step into the Designer Spotlight and tell us what makes her designer heart tick (plus a few other tidbits that will make you smile)! Discover her designing inspiration, where she calls home, and something you’d never guess about her — and most importantly to you — which of her amazing products have made it to her “Fave 10 Sale” this week! You can get these items for 40% off while Marlene is in the spotlight. So, come along, get to know Marlene a little more — then load up your cart with her favorites before the sale ends 6/13/19.

Where does your inspiration come from?
I’m inspired by what I see in the world around me — color, shapes, and texture in nature. What directs a lot of my designs is what’s happening in my life at the time and the type of projects I’m working on. A lot of my Scrap It Monthly products come from doing Project Life layouts myself.
How long have you been designing and how did you get into it?

I started digital scrapbooking around 2010. My dad and I were working on his memoirs, and I wanted to put all his photos and text into a format that I could put on a DVD so he could see it on his large screen TV. He had macular degeneration and was legally blind, so this was the best way for him to see it. I eventually realized I needed Photoshop, which I had learned to use in a multi-media course I took several years earlier. I also realized that I loved designing some of the papers and elements myself, and the rest, as they say, is history. I joined Scrap Girls in 2012.  (Sadly, I didn’t finish the memoir project before my dad passed away.)

Where do you call home?
I live in the beautiful Niagara region in Ontario, Canada. Both my parents immigrated from the Netherlands to this area, and here we stayed. St. Catharines (the largest city in the Niagara region) is minutes from Niagara Falls. Every time I see it, I am blown away and stand in awe of the beauty that God created!
What is something we would never guess about you?
That’s a tough question — I usually say my life is an open book. Most people would guess from my designs and my layouts that I’m a Christian, I’m a grandmother, I love my family, I love taking pictures, and I love to cook! In this online world, however, you don’t see that I suffer from a debilitating rare condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia. It’s one of those invisible diseases, the kind where “you don’t look sick.” I am currently in remission, thankfully, and have been pain-free for a year and a half.
Who would you like to sit by on a long plane ride and why?
I would want to sit with my husband, because that means we’re going on a wonderful vacation, hopefully to Europe, Hawaii, or back to New Zealand.
What is your favorite cereal?
I don’t care for cereal, and since I’ve been dairy free, I don’t eat it at all. The closest thing is the oats I put in my smoothie.

Check out these favorite products — on sale for 40% off through 6/1319

If you’re looking for a new kit that will bring a dash of diversity to your layouts, be sure to grab Togetherness by DRB Designs, which is our May ScrapSimple Club kit. “My goal was to make this kit work with any type of layout or project. This collection will be especially versatile in creating looks that range from light and feminine to dark and more masculine.” Read on for behind-the-scenes info about our newest club!

Behind the Scenes Tidbits

Inspiration for the product name: While creating papers and embellishments with the products in the club, I realized how well they worked together. That’s where the name Togetherness came from!

The product she especially loved designing: I especially loved designing the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: A Little Grungy and A Lot Grungy because I have always loved embellishments and papers with a distressed feel. In fact, I find it almost impossible to design anything without giving it a slightly worn to totally grungy look.

The product she thinks will be the most versatile: I think the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Bountiful Butterflies are the most versatile because you can create embellishments with them, plus use my tutorial to create patterned papers with your finished butterflies.

An Amazing Deal!
If you were to buy all of the items in the club individually from the Boutique they would cost $19.15 and we offer it to you for just $6.99 a month!
