It goes without saying that having some fashion-forward yet functional athletic apparel in your wardrobe may make you more motivated to hit the gym. We’re not just talking about cute patterns or bright colors, either — but the kind of pieces that also practically address all of your needs during a sweat session. If you’re a curvy woman, there’s a specific set of requirements your fitness apparel needs to meet to make the cut. But there’s no reason why you should compromise on style just to accommodate your body type.
Whether you’re looking to nail that warrior pose, train for a half marathon or boost your boxing skills, you deserve to look — and feel — good doing it. Luckily, we rounded up some of the best fitness apparel from size-inclusive companies, from flattering tanks to supportive sports bras.
Best basic legging
The brand Addition Elle has been around for more than 30 years with the motto “fashion democracy in sizes 12 to 26.” NOLA is the company’s partnership with body-positive supermodel Ashley Graham, and it includes a vast array of eye-catching activewear for plus-sized women. You can’t go wrong with the Nola Run Sculpting Legging Capris — they boast compression technology and a wide-waistband, which helps with shaping from the waist down, smoothing and flattering your hips, stomach and legs. To boot, the body mapping on these leggings promise increased ventilation so you stay cool and comfortable throughout your sweat session.
Best long-sleeved pullover
Katie Kozloff is a former fitness trainer who noticed that plus-sized clients in her classes were struggling to find stylish workout apparel. So she founded her own line, Katie K Active — and every single design is fit on plus-sized models to ensure they’re flattering. The Propel Funnel-Neck Pullover is an ideal layering piece for workouts during the cooler seasons, with 4-way stretch moisture-wicking performance fabric and thumbholes on the sleeves to keep your hands warm. A wide bottom band and the extra length lend some coverage and contouring anti-chafe seams offer comfort and subtle shaping at the same time.
Best sports bra
There’s no doubt that a well-constructed plus size sports bra is essential to any workout, whether you’re doing cardio, strength training or anything in between. This is especially true with high-impact activity, such as running, HIIT and plyometrics. Opt for a plus size high impact sports bra, which is specifically designed to control bounce during intense exercise. We suggest the Glamorise Sport Underwire Sport Bra, which features seamless double-layer cups for bounce reduction, moisture-wicking fabric and two-way stretch in the back for maximum comfort.
The name says it all: Marika Curves is all about designing activewear that allows you to embrace your figure, no matter what kind of physical activity you’re engaging in. When you’re seeking a workout top that has sleeves but is still practical for warmer weather, look no further than the Emma slimming tee, which is constructed of soft, stretchy Dry-Wik fabric as well as power mesh, which is known for its compression capabilities. The V-neck and shirred curve seams have an instant slimming effect, and it comes in a slew of both neutral as well as bright colors.
Juno Active, which was created over 20 years ago, is specifically aimed at women sizes XL to 6X, and all of the clothing is designed using plus-sized models to make the patterns. The brand offers gear for a wide range of activities, from running and swimming to tennis and yoga, and all the prices are remarkably budget-friendly. The Stretch Naturals Long Support Tank allows for free movement in a blend of cotton and Lycra with a hint of spandex, features a chafe-free inner shelf, and it comes in a multitude of striking hues. The v-neck front and modified racerback back provide a sleek silhouette, and you can easily wear it tucked in our out of your workout bottoms, or layered under a zip-up.
Best fun leggings
Sometimes basic black leggings just won’t cut it. On days when you need a little extra dose of color and print to inspire your workout, slip on a pair by Lineagewear. The line quickly became known for its universally flattering leggings in eye-catching patterns, like the super popular watercolor leggings, which are available in sizes up to 5X and have sold out more than once. The high waist, contoured shape, angled inseam and lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric make these leggings a godsend no matter what kind of exercise you’re performing.
Well the holidays are in full swing now and I am so excited to share my recent collaboration with blogger extraordinaire and good friend, Lisa of Mustangsallytwo.
Lisa’s commitment to inspiring women through her blog is tremendous and she is one of the most dedicated influencers I know. She has become an icon in the plus size fashion industry and a leader in fearless fashion for plus sizes with a special focus on extended sizes. Her blog and social media presence provide a wealth of information and insight into brands that are size inclusive, such as Catherine’s, the plus size fashion company we are featuring for our #HolidayDoubleSlay looks.
The #HolidayDoubleSlay concept was born last year when Lisa wanted to team up with some of her favourite full figured fashionistas and plus size brands to showcase beauty diversity through festive fashion – it was such a hit, and so well received by her fans and followers that Lisa decided it had to be an annual event.
I loved being a part of last year’s project, and I am so honoured to have been invited by Lisa to participate again this year. So without further ado, let’s dive in to the fabulousness that is Catherine’s and the fierce options Lisa and I chose for this year’s holiday looks.
I wanted to showcase an outfit that was versatile and professional – in that it could be worn for the holidays but could also be repurposed throughout the rest of the year, and be representative of me as a business owner. The matching Moto Jacket and Ponte Skirt from their Curvy Collection was a great place to start. Both fit extremely well and the ponte fabric in both pieces made them very comfortable and easy to move in. The jacket zipped up easily and I love the silhouette shape it provided. And let’s face it, it is a total boss babe look.
Next, to throw in some rich colour and contrast, I chose the Drape Front Top in scarlett, and because I am petite, I tucked it partly into the skirt to balance out my torso with the length of the skirt. The beauty about this top is that it is long enough to wear with leggings as a tunic on someone short like me (at 5’2″ I’m a petite plus, and guess what, Catherine’s offers a petite line as well!).
I also was completely obsessed with Lisa’s super fun and girly look. I mean, seriously, she never misses a beat when styling a look, from head to toe, from her adorable earrings to her magical shoes. Do head over to her blog to read about her look here.
Our thinking was holiday office party, work appropriate but still festive, and I think we delivered very well, thanks to Catherine’s!
Please enjoy all of Lisa’s #HolidayDoubleSlay looks on her blog, and get ready for pyjama shenanigans from all of us on Friday, Dec 8!
This post was proudly sponsored by Catherines but all opinions are my own.
Thanks toKatie of Katiuska Idrovo Photography for these amazing photos – it was my first time meeting and working with her and she was as delightful and professional as she is talented.
As some of you may be aware, in 2016 SexyPlus Clothing partnered with Lisa of the blog Mustangsallytwo to curate a collection from the Canadian-made Artex line sold at the boutique. Well, the 2017 Fall collection is sophisticated, functional, soft and super stylish.
So many women are shy to show their arms – and that’s ok. Because body confidence and fashion is about dressing in whatever way that makes YOU feel good. So if having some arm coverage makes you feel prettier, then you rock those arms however you see fit.
The team at Sleevey Wonders understands that women of all sizes are looking for fashionable and sexy options for their wonderful arms, and boy do they deliver. Transform any look AND get arm coverage with these reversible wardrobe fixers. Wear under any garment to make it look like the sleeves are a natural part of the top or dress without covering it up! Wear front to back or back to front for different necklines. Made by women who understand women and who also cater to plus sizes.
Sizes 14/16 to 24/26 available in most colours and styles in lace, mesh and jersey, on or off shoulder. There are so many styles, colours and fabric options! I’ve gotten such great feedback from so many women so far, and I am so thrilled to provide something so simple that makes women feel so wonderful.
Here is am wearing the long sleeve trellis style, and it looks so cool with my dress.
It’s been a while since my last post, but I am so proud to bring you the Ambrosia. This dress, by one of my favourite recently relaunched brands, IGIGI, is quite spectacular.
When you love a bodycon (a form fitted style that outlines your curves) like I do, but you also are a little self-conscious of your tummy, ruching is your friend. Ruching is a style of pleating that has become popular in recent years, and the reason it is embraced is because it camouflages the area it covers. So if you are drawn to bodycons, but you’re a little shy about your mid-section, look for dresses with ruching, or better yet, try the Ambrosia itself.
With a slightly off-shoulder design, and a sweetheart neckline revealing a slight décolletage, the Ambrosia is a sexy yet still sophisticated cocktail, dinner or date option.
Given the time of year and approaching Spring weather, I decided to style it with a cream coloured wedge sandal and accessorize with ruby and cream accents.
The large Ruby Multi Chain Faceted Teardrop Crystal Necklace Set elevates the look to a more formal level. And the Sophie Multi-wear shawl by designer Joseph Ribkoff provides a layer of elegance and ties in with the sandals.
The Ambrosia dress comes in black and teal as well, in sizes 14-36.
When I turned 40 I heard that your eyesight goes, you start to forget nouns etc. Well, it’s true! I’m in the middle of a conversation and suddenly I can’t remember the next word that I want to say. I stumble through trying all different ways to remember.. you know the, the, the, fingers snapping, the thing, the one that goes with, well what do you call it when. As if the person I’m having a conversation with is the Encyclopedia of Britannica. Perhaps only those reading this over 30 will understand that reference!
For the eyesight that was a fun moment. It actually happened before I hit 40. I was at a conference and my schedule was on the back of my name tag on a lanyard around my neck. Thank goodness for elastic lanyards and long arms!
So now that I’ve turned 50 I think the next step in the evolution of a woman is forgetfulness. Walk into a room to do something and do something else. Or, walk out of the room before you even do anything because you’ve heard that if you re-enter the room you will remember what you were going to do there in the first place. Even that doesn’t always work for me these days.
So I have decided “JUST DO IT”! This may be the Nike marketing slogan, however it proves a good point. Just do it, when you think of it, just do it!! That goes for homework, housework, laundry, calling your mother, sending an email to a friend that you haven’t heard from in a while etc….
Some may say write a list. Well, for me lists don’t work. Either I forget where I put the list or forget the list at home, in my purse, when I go to do something that’s on the list. Here’s an example, my Honey gave me some buns the other day, we didn’t finish them at the Christmas dinner so we thought we would take them up to the out-laws for dinner the next day. I put them on the stove to remember to take. I should have put them right by my purse because about a kilometer from home, “did you put the buns in the trunk” … ahhh nope they are still on the stove. Needless to say my mother in law makes really good homemade bread and there was lots to go around.
Just do it!
This is not only going to help my forgetfulness it’s also going to help me. When something is accomplished I feel so much better about it. I’m going to come out and tell people when they look nice, yes complete strangers. I’ll walk up and tell them I like their outfit, they look nice. I’m going to make a phone call or send an email when I’m thinking about someone. Go get milk when I realize … darn see I forgot even what I was going to type …
Want to say something to someone, good or bad, get it off your chest. Say what you mean to say, spit it out. You will feel better for it, maybe not right away, but at least, you won’t be holding it in anymore.
When it’s something nice you want to say, say it often. I totally talk to strangers all the time now! I saw a beautiful outfit on a woman at the mall the other day and told her so, she was very surprised and thought I wanted something… Nope just loved the outfit. We don’t tell people enough that we like them, the way they look, their smile, their hair … Just do it!
Now that the new year is here there are a bunch of resolutions going around and this is mine, just do it!
Get out and enjoy life, don’t wait for it to come to you. Go grab it by the balls. Just do it!
Do something that you haven’t done before, take a course not related to your current job. Go take a pottery lesson, go hiking. Head to the museum to see that time limited display. Start volunteering with a charity, raise money for a cause that’s close to your own heart. Say good morning to that good looking guy/gal in the elevator, you might just meet a new friend.
These are just a very, very few ideas. For me it’s because I’m so forgetful now and I mean to expand my personal universe.
I am so excited to share this totally cool collab that I was involved in with my friend and blogger babe Lisa of Mustangsallytwo. We were talking about her upcoming holiday look book a few weeks ago and the idea of combining each of her festive looks with a fellow blogger or model was born, so each day this week she has been sharing a unique look featuring a different brand in each post. It’s called the Holiday Double Slay, and it’s been causing quite a merry stir since Monday.
Here’s a recap of the beautiful, sassy, sparkly looks she’s shared so far:
I was so inspired by Lisa’s holiday project and delighted to be included. I love to create and I just knew we would have bumper to bumper fun.
We are wearing the Carmen dress which is a sheath dress with colour blocking and mesh detail at the top.
The black side panels are a chic optical benefit because they help enhance an hourglass silhouette.
I am wearing the 1X and the fit is true to size. Lisa is wearing the 5X. I LOVE and appreciate that SWAK is devoted to the plus size woman and manufactures accurate sizes up to 6X.
The sweetheart shaped mesh top ads a sexy feel to the look and I would recommend wearing a strapless bra for a smooth unencumbered presentation. I’m smitten with how the mesh tends to have a ruched look too because of the pleating on the neckline hem.
I loVe the deep V plunge at the back which gives the dress that “watch me walk away” appeal.
To contrast Lisa’s choice of a black pump, I went with a sexy lace-up medium-heeled faux-suede boot.
Then, for warmth and coverage I chose a sweater cardi with faux fur collar for that cozy yet glamorous flair.
This past Saturday November 19 I was invited to attend a special dinner and show by Kat Leonard, a comedienne and TV personality, called My Selfie. It was a tribute to body positivity and self-love. It was a great show and my outfit was killer so here’s the scoop:
Last year at my boutique SexyPlus, a Canadian plus size clothing store located in Mississauga, Ontario, I was offering this super sassy faux-leather peplum dress and I just had to grab one for myself before it sold out (which happened pretty fast). It had everything I want in a party dress: v-neck, sleeves (which were mesh but that was fine), peplum and faux leather. What a winner.
A strapless bra would have been better to avoid my straps showing but I knew I was going to keep my FABULOUS jacket on most of the night because of the cold temps.
I wore it with fishnet stockings from SexyPlus to provide that tiny bit of coverage and interest between the skirt hem and the boots. I chose a choker from the #chokerchick collection at SexyPlus offered by Caterina Moda and a simple earring to match.
I wore my tall medium heel boots from Addition-Elle which I love because the heel is actually manageable and I can stand to be in them for a few hours. It provides some height and a more evening look than a flat would have.
The jacket is a stunning designer piece also from SexyPlus – but from last year, from the Joseph Ribkoff Plus Size Collection. And the thing with these amazing statement pieces is that I don’t carry too many of them at the store so when one comes along, you just have to grab it because you know it will be a winner for years to come.
The dark hint of blue, the shine from the taffeta, and the wired collar and sleeves of the jacket with the sexy black business going on underneath gave me the ultimate polished biker chick contrast. And that’s so me.
So if you know me, you know I have a penchant for anything black and blue. It’s just my palette and I’m drawn to it every time. So in this #OOTD post (outfit of the day), I wanted to demonstrate how despite my best efforts (ok, not really), black and blue always finds its way back on me.
First look – Zeta Cardi by SexyPlus Clothing
By far one of my favourite and most versatile acquisitions, the Zeta panel cardi can be worn for business as a beautiful layering piece providing a polished finish, as shown here with a grey patterned leggings and black cami…
…or with a cocktail dress for a more formal look, as shown here which I wore to a Fall wedding this year.
And here it is in a different fabric and print, a striped black and blue version, and just as stunning but with a bit more electric pizazz.
Second look: Random pop of blue
I bet you’d never think of randomly adding the pop of blue to this look, but since the top is a bit short on one side and I like to completely cover my belly, I thought the blue cami would break up the monochromaticity of this outfit. I complimented the blue with a blue and black necklace.
Third look: Barcelona Long Lace Cardi by SexyPlus Clothing
This lace cardi is divine! Such a romantic and dramatic layering piece, it takes this blue maxi to a whole new level.
Fourth look: Bottoms Up!
A traditional combination for my Fall looks, a great tunic with blue leggings and a bootie. Would also look great with my tall boots.
Moral of the story? Don’t default to black! Of course it’s the most versatile and ‘slimming’ colour and we all love it, but you can sneak in some colour and express yourself more vividly.
