You and I were designed by the hands of the creator of heaven and earth. And He took the time to craft every single detail of our lives and breathe the most holy of breaths into our lungs. He is the One who paints the skies and can be found even in the syllables of the wind and the rain. In every moment, He is creating something. Even beyond what we can see, taking ashes and turning it all around to make something beautiful.

And God is so good at creating, He is perfect at it. It is almost as if it just bleeds from every single word He says and every step that He takes. He can’t help but create. It is who He is.

And I think He calls us to the same. Ever since He invited Adam into the process of creation in Genesis, God has been calling us to create with Him.

It is just about us saying yes and making space for it. That it's even about knowing your own heart. Knowing how to ask yourself questions and giving yourself permission to get messy. Being out of the box, even if it is just for a little bit.

We can keep creativity alive in our lives in all the responsibilities and routines. And I’ve thought up five ways to do exactly that.

1. Write down your ideas. Every single one. Even the ones that seem wild or silly.

2. Surround yourself with creative people. The kind of the people that get you dreaming again.

3. Don’t strive for perfection. Because you being you is more beautiful than perfect.

4. Try something new. Maybe by jumping into a new book or music. Or maybe by picking up something you’ve never tried like painting or rollerblading.

5. Unplug. Get away from your computer, television, cell phone. And breathe a little bit.

Creativity has this unique ability to make life so entirely rich. It changes the way we see things; the way we see our own lives and the way we see the world. It is as if it helps us to not see life as a series of hurdles, but a series of possibilities. And reminds us that there is beauty in every single day.

So crack open those creative juices again, and get a little messy with it. And in the process, the same one who created you, longs to create with you, and there is no one better at it than Him.

What do you do to stay creative?

Newborn photography makes me so happy. Spending time with families during milestones like these brings a HUGE smile to my face.

What are the things that make you happy? Who are the people who bring you joy?

Make a list of those things and then fill your life with as much of it as possible.

True joy, true happiness; the kind that starts in your soul and is contagious. The kind that provokes your fire and gets you dancing and running and waving your arms. The kind that gets you hugging people and high-fiving children and thinking that this life is a gift if we would only receive it.

Fill your life with the things that release joy to you.

With faith and laughter and corny jokes. With people and ocean waves and sunny days. With conversations and dreaming big and baking cookies. With colour and singing and hope.

Client Testimonial

“Loved working with Karen! She made the whole process very easy from the beginning. Communication was great. She replied to emails quick and always made sure all your questions were answered! Her studio is beautiful and I loved that she supplied a wardrobe, not only for me but also my kids. It made life so much easier after just having a baby and a cesarean. While at her studio as well, she took good care of us and my kids. Karen knew exactly how to keep them occupied and happy and made the whole session an awesome experience!“ - Shayna Aasman

Today I received a call from a lovely mama of a 7 day old little one.  She just had her baby last week and I’m unable to accommodate her session here in the studio. It’s so sad when this happens.

Whether I can fit a newborn in on short notice is different every day. Sometimes babies arrive early and sometimes late. I encourage you to reserve your session early to avoid disappointment. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. It gives you time to choose the photographer that’s genuinely right for you

  2. It removes the stress of having to find another photographer if I’m unavailable

  3. You can visit the studio before your baby arrives. This gives us a chance to plan out the session and see the products available

  4. You can spread the session fee into two payments. Part now and part after your session makes it a little easier for you

  5. It takes the stress away, because you know when he or she arrives, I’ll be ready

This is such an incredible time in your life and in the life of your newborn. Their first few weeks on the planet are precious and so very important. It is a gift to have that captured, treasured and remembered. As you are expecting the arrival of your little one, make it a priority to book early. It’ll be a fresh breath of relief knowing that it is all going to come together so well.

I can’t wait to speak with you and make our visions a reality. Let's begin documenting the life of your newborn before he or she even arrives into this world.

Welcome to Reflections of Life.  I’m so glad you’re here.

Overflowing love is the best love.

Have you ever been in the presence of a mother and child? The love that is presented in front of you is overwhelming. Love knows no bounds, especially when it comes to children. All they are looking for is someone to appreciate their existence and someone to listen to them. They want a place that they can call home and a family they can be a part of. If you can offer them that, they are sure to be happy. If you can offer them more, they will be ecstatic. If you attend every one of their soccer games and practices, they will know you are giving them the best love. If you take them out for an afternoon full of fun, they'll know that you like to be around them.

Although our children don't ask to enter this world, it's our privilege as parents to remind them of how wanted they are. It's important that they know they have changed our lives for the better. Even if some days are tougher than others, I'm sure you'll tell your little ones how much you love them. I'm sure you'll let them know you're proud of them and everything they do. Because you, mama - you're already a wonderful mother.

You are so beyond powerful. Trust me.

You are so strong, so determined, so beautiful, so raw. You are so authentic, so kind, and so passionate.

Why are you all these things? Because you are a girl.

You were carefully thought out and crafted into something special. Trust me, you were made for a reason.

Women are such wonderful creatures. From being breathtakingly beautiful to being able to deliver new life - women are the real deal.

Women can inspire others.

Women are captivating.

Women have a powerful effect.

Have you ever seen your grandma working so hard on something and never give up? She has endurance. She has patience. She has resilience. What about watching your mom teach one of your siblings a very important life lesson? She has wisdom. She has grace. She has courtesy. Maybe your aunt is an athlete, but this year has been hard for her. She doesn't let anything get in her way because she is constant, she is steady, she is persistent, and she is female. You share all these traits with your family as well as some of your own, which makes you a force to be reckoned with.

Do not underestimate the capability of a woman. Do not get in their way. Do not question their perseverance.

Most importantly, do not overlook who you are - because trust me, you are so powerful.

About This Newborn & Family Session

Steve is the amazing realtor that got us our dream home/studio here in Grimsby. He’s also the drummer for the band Thousand Foot Krutch. Aimee is a fantastic hair stylist, and together they’re now raising five girls. Yes, you read that right. Five. :)

And little Mila was such a doll for her session in the warm studio. She slept through part of it, was awake just enough to get some beautiful images of those wide open eyes looking up at her family. Her older siblings doted on her, more than willing to snuggle, kiss and lay hands on her in prayer. It was so perfect.

Baby, you are and always will be my child. You are different from everyone else, and different is such a good thing. Baby, you are so unique.

Baby, you are so strong.

Baby, if you ever have days when you feel like giving up know that I am here to help you.

Baby, if you ever have days that you feel are the best ones know that I am here to share them with you.

If you ever need a hug, I will be there.

If you ever need to talk, I will be there.

If you ever need to be loved, baby, I am always there.

Baby, you were put on this Earth for a reason.

You have purpose. Never forget that.

Never forget that you have the chance to wake up every morning and make the day great.

Never forget that whatever happens happens and there are some things you can't change.

Never forget that you are so incredibly loved by so many.

Never forget that you are so special.

Please never doubt that you are beautiful.

Never doubt that you have so much potential.

Never doubt that you are capable of so many things.

Never doubt that you are so special.

Never doubt that you are amazing.

Never doubt who you are.

New life is so amazing.

There is something beautiful about bringing a small human into this world. There is something beautiful about having your heart outside your body in the form of a newborn baby. There is something so beautiful about new life, and it deserves a celebration.

Whether you’ve delivered many children before or it’s all brand new territory for you, it is so magical. The feeling of bringing a person into this world is truly unfathomable.

There's something about new life that makes us feel young again. There's something about it that makes us not take any moment for granted. This beautiful thing us women are blessed to be able to do deserves not to be overlooked.

Have you ever seen a pregnant woman radiate beauty? What about the way she wears her belly so proudly and is asking to be kissed by the sun? This creates happiness because we know something magical is right around the corner.

So be happy with your body.

Be happy with this wonderful gift you have been given.

Be happy that you have created or are creating a miracle inside you.

Be happy that you get to witness your new baby go through each stage of life. Be happy that you got the invite to be a bystander for every adventure they may encounter.

Be happy that you have someone to teach.

Be happy that you have someone with whom you can share love.

Mothers are typically the ones behind the camera. They are always capturing the special moments, instead of being involved in them. You are always the one to make sure everyone else is enjoying themselves. It's time you put yourself first, and have a relaxing, wonderful time.

Looking back 30 years from now, the memories will start to fade. Photography is a way to bring back those special moments, and wouldn't it be nice to be apart of them?

The importance of having these memories to look back on is essential, because life is too short. Before you know it, your kids will be having their own, and you will want those photos to be able to share with them. And show them what you looked like back in the day.

The Motherhood Event is so special. It is an opportunity to appreciate mamas and help them feel special and beautiful. Because you are, but through your chaos, is easily forgotten. For once they can be the person in front of the camera, and not behind it.

We also have refreshments and cookies to keep your kiddies content, and you as well of course. There is also colouring and crafts to keep them cooperative. Bubbles were also a very popular way to distract antsy children. And Jennifer was there to create jewelry from your children’s hand and foot prints.

The goal is to make mama feel pampered and beautiful. We have hair and makeup with Christine as an option, and you have full access to our studio wardrobe. All this, while getting to spend time with your children. It is a way to have an empowering day, but with the people you love.

But I didn’t do this event alone! To make the magic happen, I had the help of these talented ladies!

The way the light kisses your face is so pure and sweet.

The way you follow my direction in the studio and look into the camera just so. All I can do is wonder what the world has in store for you, little man.

Such wonderful things.

You are so small and pure, and look up to everything in the world with such curiosity. You have such a bright presence about you, because you are living in your own imagination. Care free and ready to explore.

You have so much potential ahead of you. You can accomplish anything you set your mind to. The world is yours to discover. Never lose the childish curiosity you possess.

You look up at your mama with such appreciation. Without even understanding what she does for you, and how vast her love is for you. Whatever you chose, whoever you chose to be, she’ll be there to be your supporter.

I’m sure watching you grow has been such a blessing to her. Being able to be your guide in life is such an honour for her. The time has gone by too fast, it seems like just yesterday that you were small enough to fit your sweet bum in her hands.

You are capable of great things, such wonderful things. One day you will not be so small, but you will always be pure and sweet, to your mama.

Hey mama, I'm Karen Byker. I’ve traveled around and now I’m back in my hometown of Grimsby, Ontario, Canada. I'm obsessed with babies, motherhood and all that goes along with it.

I've got four kids of my own and in my spare time I enjoy music by The Paper Kites, flipping through the pages of Style at Home magazine and a nice hot cup of tea. :)

As a mama myself, I understand the overwhelm of every day, but I've learned how to embrace and enjoy the beauty of it. I believe it’s possible to enjoy this busy life we chose. Let's chat about documenting the beauty through your chaos.

To be loved is to be free.  Remember when you were a child and you felt so very free?  Where you thought that if you jumped off the table, you could soar? And if you walked into a room, you were authentically yourself, without a care in the world. You were completely confident that you were loved. Let’s get back to that place today.

For years, I've been avoiding using props in my pictures, except for bubbles and toys. But I am also always talking about finding the beautiful moment in the chaos of daily mom life. Having your children feel free and comfortable is a big part of finding that calm in the chaos. Creating an environment that is fun and where they can be themselves is key.

When my kids were little there was nothing better than evening bath time. When everyone was busy being happy and playing. When there was so much love, laughter and sweetness.

So I wanted to bring a little bit of that into the studio.

Now there's so many different sensory options to keep them busy. I use wooden toys, board books and bubbles. I make a delicious and squishy birthday cake and we have water play in the baby bath tub. It's clear babies have a wonderful time, simply being themselves.

I've created a room full of activities that allow your child to feel free. An environment that encourages you to show them how much you love them. So come and join me for a baby session with your little one. xo
