Valid

I have always believed that life is a constant journey of learning… both in my professional and personal life – and still never cease to be amazed at how much I don’t know despite having been in the same profession for over twenty years!

Expectations are Changing

According to many sources and surveys, learning and development is becoming more and more important in the workplace in terms of the expectations of our workforce. Whilst employees who have been carrying out their role for a long period of time ooze experience and knowledge; they still have to deal with the ever-evolving nature of business and technology. Both in and out of work technology evolves at such a fast pace; employees need to keep up with the latest developments and changes to their roles and resources, no matter long they may have been in them. Furthermore, it is clear that most employees in many businesses are more interested in how much will be invested into their learning and development by their employer, than they are in their remuneration package (provided it is competitive in the market). Keeping up with learning, by whatever means (online, face to face, or any other medium) is high on the agenda of any individual considering their career: whether they may potentially move to a new employer or stay with their existing one.

Skills Leads to Empowerment

Learning and development is also affecting our employee’s wider well-being… A third of employees feel that they are not confidently equipped with the skills they need to fully complete their role and have to resort to the Internet to search how to undertake some of their tasks… pretty scary stuff! Not only will this be affecting the productivity of the business, but could also be damaging our employees along the way. Is this because employers are not placing enough emphasis on their employee’s training / development programmes? Or is it because there is a skills shortage in the market? Possibly a mixture of both…?

Attract, Develop, and Retain the Best Talent

Generally speaking, we know there is a shortage of skills, and with a high employment rate, trying to attract those individuals to our businesses with the skills we need can be a challenge for most recruiters. Even if we do manage to attract them, we then have to figure out how to hang on to them! If learning is so important to potential (and current) employees, then we surely can’t ignore the fact that businesses need to keep focussed on the way we develop our employees as well as business practices. According to Claudio Erba, CEO of Docebo: training tools simply aren’t keeping up with the needs of today’s digital workforce and it’s impacting how they are able to build their careers and find happiness in the workplace. To ensure employees thrive, companies need to implement training tools that match the ease, personalisation and interactivity of platforms like Google and YouTube. This not only helps the workforce to feel more empowered, but will also create new opportunities for a business to evolve the types of roles and tasks its employees take on. To achieve this, we need to develop our learning strategies with earnest, be able to provide multiple platforms upon which our employees can learn and develop, and also target, monitor and measure the impact of learning on our business and employees. Given what we know about our own workforce and the labour market generally, this has to be a fundamental strategy that every boardroom must consider a business priority… I’m hosting a free webinar on 3rd April discussing strategic planning and the importance of aligning learning needs to business objectives to create a targeted digital skills development programme. I’d love to see you there!
