Jo + James’ Relaxed Norfolk Seaside Wedding At Barn Drift. Photo By Esther Wild Photographer

Today I am sharing a bit of a  throwback to the beautiful, relaxed summer wedding of Jo and James. The celebration at their wedding venue close by to stunning North Norfolk beaches lasted the whole weekend and I am getting all the feels over it.

Hope you will enjoy reading about their wedding weekender in Jo’s own words. The photos have been brilliantly captured by Esther Wild and frames the couples story perfectly.

WEDDING PLANNING

I grew up in Norfolk, and there’s ‘no place like home’ ( if you’re not local – here’s 5 Reasons why you should get married in Norfolk!). I spent my childhood on the beach and in the countryside, and this I knew in my heart of hearts,  was where I wanted to be married. James and I shared the same vision; a small intimate day with our closest family and friends. A Norfolk retreat.

Finding the right venue was definitely the biggest challenge we faced ( read  NB Tips on choosing your wedding venue!) . We did a lot of research and visited many beautiful venues before we found something that we felt suited to us. Barn Drift gave us an option we hadn’t even considered. It’s a residential property with a marriage license. It enabled us to essentially plan the ultimate house party.

In actual fact once the venue was booked the plans came together really organically. The design and planning of the day was enjoyable. I was so determined not to be a brideszilla! And so we put a lot of time into planning things in advance, then called upon our nearest and dearest once we had a plan.

James’ dad is really handy at woodwork and made us a stack of sign posts for the village and the barn. The signs ran right the way up the track to the property, welcomed guests and labeled the various details. My mum and her knitting group made over 100 pom-poms to decorate the space!

Barn Drift is perfectly positioned amongst the owners farmland with views across to the marshes and sea at Cley Next the Sea.  We had a Ploughmans lunch and a fish and chip supper to fit a countryside-seaside meal concept, befitting of the location. Other than that the theme was just country casual, we wanted people to be themselves and celebrate the day with us comfortable enjoying the day.

YOUR TOP WEDDING PLANNING TIPS

Do it your way, and try to stay true to your ideas! Pinterest is fantastic for inspiration, but don’t forget it’s your day. Get a spread sheet! We kept our budget intact by keeping track of costs.

Source local. Our suppliers were all small, independent businesses. Their attention to detail was immaculate and made us feel really important.

Have a think about who you know. Our friend made a photobooth for her sister’s wedding and so we asked her if she would bring it to us as a wedding present. It was a great party piece and everyone loved it.

My friend Sarah is really good at hair and makeup and I asked her if she..

Autumnal Abundance Meets Refined Country Glamour At Applewood Hall. Photo By DBlake Photography. Norfolk Brides, UK Wedding Blog

We are not quite ready to let go of the autumn just yet,  therefore today we are sharing a beautiful Autumnal styled shoot, where abundance meets refined country glamour. Set at a the beautiful South Norfolk wedding venue at Applewood Hall, it really captures and showcases the beauty of autumn.

THE INSPIRATION

Looking ahead to next year’s Pantone colours which are bold, empowering tones – there was one that caught the eye, cheekily named Jester Red. Inspired by this playful colour and the vibrant shades of autumn, the team at Applewood Hall wanted this photo shoot to celebrate this time of year.

So with a colour palette of rich reds and deep plums in mind, they felt that a country glamour theme would really bring this to life. Using rich jewel tones of trailing Amaranthus, Astilbe, Astrantia and pink ice Protea with seasonal foliage including Hydrangea, Populus leaf and Leucodendron for the bridal bouquet and arbor archway, they then added pheasant feathers and trailing garnet ribbon to the bridal bouquet, plum draping on the arbour and claret chair drapes to add that extra autumnal feel.

This was complimented with natural accents from the heavy wood trestle tables, wicker peacock chairs and sheepskin throws as well as the pearl brooches on the chair drapes. Glimpses of gold from the antique brass candle holders and personalised wedding sign as well as a ‘gentleman’s bar’ featuring bottles of whiskey, port and sherry, with crystal tumblers and decanters gave a bit of added sparkle too!

“We wanted to add as much detail as possible so there was always something new to look at – almost like raiding an old country house and bringing it all to life outside in Applewood Hall’s beautiful garden, showing how it can be used for a ceremony on a sunny afternoon.” – Kiera Goymour, Applewood Hall

It’s been an incredibly busy, fun-filled season for team One Curious Dream and with Christmas just around the corner (yep, I said the ‘C’ word!), we’re deep in the midst of our 2019 design consultations – this is a great opportunity for our team to get the creative juices flowing and help our couples to create unique, personal spaces for their wedding.

So. Much. Fun!

Whilst our design consultations are all-encompassing and look at every element of your wedding design, one of the key areas we spend lots of time working on is your wedding table styling.

Whilst we’ve seen a big shift in how couples are approaching their wedding breakfast this year (say goodbye to the traditional 3-course meal and hello to relaxed, sharing style platters, as an example), our newlyweds still want to sit with their nearest and dearest to share the first meal as a married couple.

A beautifully designed table will always take centre-stage in your overall décor scheme – not only will it help you create ambience and atmosphere and provide an opportunity to inject some of your personality into the design, it’s also where your guests are likely to spend a reasonable amount of time, so getting it right is key! Here are our top tips for styling your wedding tables.

Start with the bigger picture

Whilst we’re focusing purely on styling your tables today, to ensure consistency, it’s still really important to consider how this element fits into your overall décor scheme. First of all, have you already got a theme or style in mind for the rest of your wedding? If so, take inspiration from other elements such as your stationery, furniture, floristry selections and signage to ensure your tables are aligned with these, creating cohesiveness and helping the design to flow beautifully throughout your day. For example, if you’ve opted for clean, modern luxe vibes for the rest of your wedding, you’ll want to incorporate this with simple, pared back design on your tables too.

Choose the foundation

To begin with, consider the style of table you are working with – have you opted for something wooden and beautifully rustic or have you chosen a style of table that requires a tablecloth or cover?

To an extent, this decision will help you set off on the right path. For many, a crisp, clean white tablecloth simply needs to be matched with cut glass crystal and a statement floral arrangement for a beautifully luxe/elegant feel, whereas reclaimed wooden tables naturally encourage lots of freely formed, unstructured foliage with wildflowers and a much more relaxed feel in the design overall.

Build the picture

The perfect wedding tablescape contains lots of depth, texture and detail – this is where layering really comes in handy! As you begin to design your table, think about using lots of different tableware elements and don’t be afraid to move away from the conventional – mix and match coloured or patterned runners in unusual fabrics with textured charger plates, beautiful glassware and unique crockery and cutlery. Napkins (shock horror!) don’t need to match and you can inject some serious personality with your stationery and favours too.

Flower power

As for the florals – be creative! You don’t need to opt for a single central arrangement, individual stems in apothecary bottles or brass/crystal bud vases dotted across the table look stunning and offer variety and an opportunity to add some splashes of colour.

Just a note, if you do opt for a single, central arrangement, ensure this doesn’t impede vision at the table – your guests won’t appreciate getting neck strain where they’ve had to sit awkwardly just to be able to chat with a guest on the other side of the table!

Let there be light

At One Curious Dream, we come from the school of thought that there can NEVER be enough candlelight! Whether you opt for candelabras, candlesticks or dainty votives, adding some lighting elements to your tables helps to create atmosphere and a warm, romantic feel.

Add the ‘wow’ factor

Now it’s time to choose your ‘hero’ ingredients – these are the pieces that really add the wow factor to your tables. From beautiful, contemporary metallic geo shapes, natural stoneware vases, shells, driftwood or even quirky props and pretties added to your centrepieces, don’t be afraid to experiment and be playful!

Also, think about what can go above your tables as well. Depending on your venue, you may be able to add hanging installations (flowers, greenery and ribbon chandeliers all work well) or even experiment with creative lighting options too if you can.

Hanging Floral Displays and festoon lighting creates that WOW factor.

Be practical!

Of course, we want an incredible looking table, but also, we need to ensure it works practically for the food service as well. For example, if you’re having a feasting menu with sharing platters, adding lots of décor to the centre of the table (where the platters will need to sit) will make life difficult for your caterers and stop your guests from getting to the grub!

Finally – less is more

At One Curious Dream, we always believe that ‘less is more’ when it comes to design. Make sure that every single element on the table has a purpose and that you aren’t adding unnecessary items which can create clutter and detract from your overall vision. Keep it simple and invest in quality pieces that help to create your desired look – quality over quantity every damn time.

Always keep in mind that the design elements are one of the really fun parts of the wedding planning process! Pinterest is an amazing source of inspiration and ideas and if you’re really struggling to bring your vision to life, why not book in for a Wedding Design Inspiration Consultation with the team at One Curious Dream?

Cosy and Romantic Christmas Wedding Styling Ideas In Norfolk. Photo By Georgia Rachael Photograph. Styling by Little Jems, Flowers by Ivy Floral Events. Norfolk Brides Wedding Blog

With winter and Christmas weddings on the up, we find that there are limited inspirational resources for couples planning their wedding in Norfolk. Yes, you will find tonnes of Pinterest and Instagram boards, but none of those will feature the work of our local suppliers ( in case you fall in love with it and want the EXACT thing for your big day).

Georgia from Georgia Rachael Photography has teamed up with some wonderful Norfolk wedding vendors to put together a warm rustic Christmas inspired wedding editorial. I hope that you can use the abundant floral displays, stunning make up and beautiful styling as an inspiration for your Christmas wedding.

“Our styled shoot inspiration was centred around Christmas, and making a seasonal wedding all that less cliché and tacky. Not a Santa or stocking in sight! Instead, to create a festive atmosphere, we used rich reds and brass golds in our colour palettes, a few fairy lights, plenty of candlelight, and other subtle nods to the most wonderful time of year, whilst maintaining the infamous rustic look that the Norfolk wedding industry and surrounding area is so popular for, to create something tastefully festive. We’re seeing a big increase in the amount of October / Halloween weddings, and in the same way that Instagram and Pinterest has done such a good job of making them so beautiful, we hoped we could do the same for Christmas.” – Georgia Rachael Photography

How to choose your wedding supplier. Photo by Ross Harvey. Norfolk Brides Wedding Blog.

Whether you’re having a completely DIY wedding or are going for a managed package with a venue, there will come a point in your planning process where you will need to assemble a crack team of suppliers to help you have the best day ever! Selecting the right suppliers will not only help you achieve incredible results on your big day, it will also make the planning process stress-free and allow you to relax knowing your wedding is in safe hands. Here are our top tips for getting it right!

All about the money

Obviously, cash is king when it comes to choosing suppliers. First of all, work out what you can actually afford to spend so that you approach suppliers within your price point, after all, you don’t want to get your heart set on your dream supplier if they are light years away from what you have allocated. Having said that, if there are businesses or packages that are slightly out of your budget, don’t be afraid to contact them anyway and ask what they can do to tailor their services to fit the budget you have available. After all, if you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Location, location, location

It seems obvious really, but we would always recommend choosing suppliers who are based locally to your venue. Whilst you may have come across an incredible 6-piece band in Cornwall, the cost of getting them to play at your wedding in Norfolk may well be extortionate! If your budget is larger and you are able to cover travel and accommodation costs, then it could be feasible, however, there will be lots of talented wedding professionals wherever you choose to say ‘I do’. Selecting local suppliers not only means they are likely to know your venue, they will also probably have worked with some of your other suppliers (for example, if you choose a separate bar and caterer or band and DJ) which really can work in your favour.

How to choose your wedding supplier. Photo by Ross Harvey. Norfolk Brides Wedding Blog.

Tried and tested

A great place to start is by asking your venue for any supplier recommendations that they might have. These businesses know the venue well and will also have an understanding of any rules or challenges that come with your chosen space. Similarly, also ask married friends and family about their experiences and who they couldn’t have done without when they got married – personal recommendations always go a long way. Remember to check out online reviews and feedback from their previous couples.

Do your research

We cannot stress the importance of this one…because even salt looks like sugar! At One Curious Dream, we regularly hear horror stories about couples being let down by unscrupulous wedding suppliers who have either overpromised and under delivered or not had the skills and experience to provide the service or goods being sold.

Make sure you research any supplier you are thinking of using thoroughly and dig deep – don’t just look at the total number of online reviews, for example, make sure those reviews actually relate to the service you are looking to book. Finally, do be wary of businesses that appear to be in a permanent ‘sales state’ – whilst offering a special deal from time to time is very standard business practice, posting new discounted packages on a daily basis hints at underlying cashflow problems that you could bear the brunt of later down the line.

How to choose your wedding supplier. Photo by Ross Harvey. Norfolk Brides Wedding Blog.

All under one roof

Guys, we can’t recommend this enough – visit a wedding fair. Be selective about which one you choose to attend to ensure you get suppliers that are in line with the vision for your day. It’s a great opportunity to meet and compare lots of suppliers all under one roof and can potentially save you lots of time. Check out some fabulous local wedding fair on Wedding Event’s page.

Go with your gut

Finally, our most important tip – follow your gut instinct. Given the huge role that most suppliers play in bringing your wedding vision to life, it’s so, SO important that you like the people you are dealing with not only in terms of their personality and understanding of your day but also in the way they conduct their business. Are they responsive to phone calls and emails? Are they always happy to help with unusual or quirky requests? Do they seem to understand what you are aiming to achieve? Are they flexible and open to incorporating your ideas into the services or goods they provide? In most cases, if you get good vibes, you’re on to a winner!

Do you have any of your own tips to add to our list? Let us know on social media pages or drop us a line!

Fifty Shades of Ultra Violet. The Lavender Land in Norfolk. Photo by Jane at Bigphatphotos. Venue at Norfolk Lavender near Heacham.

To brigthen up this dull Monday morning we are sharing this gorgeous Ultra Violet Inspired photoshoot in Norfolk. Despite a small feature in our magazine last autumn, this styed shoot deserves whole post to itself.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know that Ultra Violet has been announced to be the colour fo the 2018 by Pantone and it has been EVERYWHERE this year. Particularly in the wedding scene. It featured in so many shades of it ( please DO NOT confuse it with Cadbury’s Purple, that is NOT it!). And although purple itself was not the most popular choice amoungst the couples ( btw, I still blame the Cadbury’s Purple phenomenon for this!) the variety of shades and colour combos that were introduced this year is quite vast! My personal favourite is holographic colour, which, while not drectly linked to the Pantone’s Ultra Violet, has kind of risen from it as a cool alternatve. I will expand on this in another post, perhaps.

The Ultra Violet  – Definition by Pantone

The Official Pantone website describes their choice of colour as follows:

A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.

Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.

The depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.

Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The colour is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world.

Erica + Jacob. Winter Themed Christmas Wedding at Voewood. Photo by Craig Jacob. Norfolk Brides Real Weddings

The only trouble with featuring some of our gorgeous  Real Wedding Submissions in the NB Magazine, is that we cannot possibly add enough images to capture how truly stunning the wedding actually was. This also applies to Erica and Jacob’s winter wedding at our beloved Voewood.

So, have your supper, get in your PJ’s and enjoy this beautiful celebration with a glass of wine, G&T or any other favourite of yours – it is Friday night, after all, Honeys!

PLANNING A CHRISTMAS WEDDING

Jake proposed on Christmas morning 2015. We had just opened our stockings in bed with our two dogs Sam and Binx, when Jake got down on one knee and popped the question. As expected, after 7 loving years together, I said ‘YES!’.

We didn’t want a long engagement and knew that we wanted a winter wedding, so we planned it for the following December. Once we set a budget, we got stuck into the planning. We both really love winter and Christmas which is why we wanted for the wedding to take place in December. I wanted lots of lights, candles and sparkle but also something different.

Jake’s best man had been to a wedding some time ago and told us that if we were to ever marry, the perfect place for us would be Voewood in High Kelling. It was the only venue we looked at, and we fell in love straight away!

Voewood is a very unique and eclectic wedding venue, with an abundance of artwork and quirky designs, which we fell in love with. The building itself is amazing with little cosy nooks and crannies for guests to relax, and the grounds are beautiful. From there it was settling on the theme, colour scheme and importantly, a great menu!

My favourite part of the planning was arriving at the venue the day before and seeing our vision come together! I loved setting everything up, arranging the sweet buffet, putting up the decorations and just admiring it when it was all ready to go!

We chose red, blue and gold colours for our wedding. The groomsmen wore navy and the groom and best man wore a darker shade so they looked a little different. They each had a red rose buttonhole. The bridesmaids wore berry red sweetheart neckline, floor-length dresses with rose gold jewellery and white faux fur wraps to add to the winter theme. The tablecloths were white with champagne glitter runners and the flowers complemented the colours of the theme. I made my own invitations and place cards with the help of my bridesmaids which were red and gold. Each of the rooms was filled with candles, lights, we had two Christmas trees dressed with simple lights and vases of flowers dotted about the venue in addition to our centrepieces.
