Love Lives Here Movie to Celebrate its Film Location in Durban!

Highly anticipated South African rom-com, Love Lives Here, will host two premieres, including a premiere in Durban, to celebrate the beautiful province of KwaZulu Natal, the location where the movie was filmed.

‘The rom-com features a star-studded cast, with actress Thando Thabethe as its lead, alongside Lungile Radu, Zola Nombona, Sihle Ndaba, Nomalanga Shozi and Nyokabi Gethaiga, Motlatsi Mafatshe as well as KZN’s shining stars, Nomalanga Shozi, Nkanyiso Bhengu, and Andile Gumbi.

Set in KZN, the film tells the story of Zinhle Malinga (Thando Thabethe), a jaded romantic, who’s quests for that picture-perfect prince charming have left her disillusioned about the idea of true love. Like most successful young women, Zinhle is ready to settle down but is yet to find a man who wants the same thing and has resigned to putting her search for love on hold. When she meets Nathi Shange (Lungile Radu) everything changes, and she sets out to get a commitment from him in the form of a ring. But Nathi has sworn off marriage, and this brings Zinhle to the beginning of her journey to understanding the true meaning of love and ultimately finding the love she deserves.

The movie also explores many themes including money and relationships, sexuality, self-love, friendship and family!

“We wanted to showcase parts of South Africa that are seldom explored, and the picturesque locations that KZN offers felt like the right space and back drop to tell this authentic South African love story,” says the film’s executive producer, Dumi Gumbi.

The movie will have a premiere in Johannesburg on the 28th of March, followed by a premiere in Durban on the 4th of April, the night before the movie can be watched at cinemas across South Africa on 5th of April 2019!

The Trailer can be watched on the movie’s Youtube channel: https://youtu.be/VyjxT4ojgyk

SAFTA’s, South Africa’s Oscars of the TV and Film industry. We’ve celebrated the 13th year the past weekend in Sun City and we’ve seen well-deserved winners, amazing as well as questionable fashion choices and of course lots of tears and laughter of happiness.

This post is dedicated to the amazing Layla Swart who won the “Youth Achiever Award” this year and it was indeed well-deserved. This award is, of course sponsored by Ster-Kinekor and is in its 3rd year now (will be sponsored for a further two years). I’ve worked with Ster-Kinekor on numerous occasions and it’s always been an amazing experience so I’m really grateful for the opportunity granted to interview Layla.

Mel: Firstly, congratulations on a well-deserved award, how are you feeling?

Layla: Overwhelmed, it’s a been a really tough 10 years in the industry and I think one doesn’t really expect acknowledgement or accolades. Filming is my passion and I love it so this is amazing.

M: What has been the highlight of your career thus far?

L: Definitely this moment! It’s my first Safta and it’s a big one, so proud of myself.

M: An award like this immediately propels you into the spotlight as an ambassador for young people, how are planning on using this platform?

L: I think the youth of South Africa came off age in a very uncertain time but the possibilities that exist for us as filmmakers of colour right now have never been there before. What’s important to me is to empower the inner spirit, I mean the opportunities are there but now is the time for them to believe in themselves.  To believe that they’re worthy of success, to encourage young film makers and dreamers that this is their time.

M: How do you feel about brands like Ster-Kinekor getting involved with initiatives like this?

L: I think it’s crucial since they’re one of the biggest brands in our film industry. From a young age in SA you get introduced to them and it resonate with film making. The fact that they’re taking the time to nurture the youth and support them in this industry is incredibly important and I’m proud to be associated with them.

M: In a mostly male-dominated space, how does it feel to receive this award? Especially with issues that females endure raised during the #MeToo campaign.

L: First and foremost, it’s our time on a global scale, no more taking the back seat. I’m very proud to be in existence in a time like this, to witness and actively play a role in it as I feel women have struggled for centuries to get the recognition they deserve in the battle with their male counterparts. I still feel we have a long way to go, baby steps but we are evolving and I consider myself fortunate to be part of the evolution.

M: What message do you have for the youth or anyone out there that would like to pursue a career in filming or in the entertainment industry?

L: I think it’s always daunting when you start out in an industry like this because there’s no stepladder; it’s not like you can obtain a degree in filmmaking and suddenly all the doors will open for you. What I will say is find the reason why you really want to tell stories and make films, find that reason and back yourself, no matter what because this is a confidence game. As soon as you have your vision don’t doubt it as doors will start to open for you. I’d also like to add that the government  has put incredible schemes in place and they’re still working towards adding more. It’s a process and won’t happen overnight but they are there to support young filmmakers, more than they’ve ever been.

*Layla also won the award for “Best Short film” for StillBorn, pictured here with the cast.

Miss Pretorius by Misspretorius - 2w ago

I know,  we’re almost halfway through 2019 (or so it feels) but I still see posts with #newyearnewme or New Year’s resolutions being made so this is quite relevant. We live in a society where others tend to make us feel ‘less than” and that’s really unfair and messed up. I mean, how are you going to allow some random stranger to make you feel you’re not beautiful enough? Or motivated enough? Or funny enough? Ushering in a new year is inevitable, if you’re alive, so why not make resolutions or changes when and if required? Why wait for it to be a trend when you often don’t mean it or won’t adhere to it? A resolution is in essence a promise to yourself so if you can’t even honour that, how will you honour commitments to others? I’m derailing a, supposed light-hearted post but I felt like it need to be said at some stage.

The awesome team at Kangol do get it though. The tagline for their recent press drop, which I feel we should all make our personal motto, is New Year, Love Me. The message is all about SELF LOVE because, in the words of RuPaul, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?” Kangol feels like we shouldn’t change anything, we’ll merely work on our own unique abilities and make them better and I couldn’t agree more. Focus on you, honey as this is your journey, no one else’s. Do what’s best for you and right now, it’s to get your free makeup organiser when you spend R350 or more, okay? I mean, it’s cute and will help you be more organised, trust me I didn’t know how much I needed it until I got it. Let’s have a look at the awesome goodies I got this month.

Floral Rush

Am I the only person who often forgets to wear perfume? I mean, I’m always in a rush as sleep is not my best friend so mornings are a train wreck. It’s a wonder I remember to apply deodorant so perfume is a distant thought that only occurs when I’m halfway to work. Since reviewing Kangol fragrances I’ve made an effort to apply perfume at least a few times a week and always get asked what I’m wearing. When I received this press drop, two ladies applied and smelled Floral Rush and immediately wanted it, can’t say I blame them. Firstly, the design is so cute, very reminiscent of a garden painted with watercolours, so artsy. Secondly, the size is perfect as it fits into most of my bags, which is very handy and last but not least, it smells amazing. Not overwhelming, migraine problems, and also not too florally (is that even a word?)In fact, it’s the perfect blend of floral and fresh, which I love.

“Mermaid Inspired” nail shades

Front to back: Vitamin Sea Sorry, not sorry Girl Gang Chalky purple

We’ve moved into new offices and since I’m the only girl I’ve been assigned all the cleaning duties, basically. My nails have been suffering a great deal and I haven’t worn nail colours in a while. I, however used the nail treatment products from Kangol to keep my nails in tip-top shape for when the time for colour arise. I loved the colours that I’ve received as it’s reminiscent of the ocean, so the name is quite apt. The shades are as follows:

Vitamin Sea

This is a pretty seafoam green with a touch of blue. It’s the only shade that I’ve had a slight problem with in terms of consistency. Application weren’t as smoothly as the others but the colour payoff is beautiful.

Sorry, not Sorry

One of my favourite Demi tracks so obviously I would gravitate towards it. It’s a stunning purple that appears almost navy blue after a while. Application is amazing and it’s wearable colour even if you’re not a fan of dark shades.

Girl Gang

My new favourite nude and only colour I’ll wear regularly. It appears nude but as soon as the light hits it there’s a kaleidoscope of colours that immediately draws the eye. I’ve worn it on my own hand’s nails and got a lot of compliments on it.

Chalky Purple

This is the only shade that’s not gel but I love it nevertheless. It has a chalky finish, which look really cool. It’s a beautiful lilac that I’ll wear again as application is seamless as well.

Makeup organiser: Free gift

This is one gift that you don’t know you need until you have it. I’ve recently create a “makeup station” in my bedroom and things were all over the place. This organiser really helped to bring it together as I could store lipsticks, powders and blush in there, which really brought everything together. Spend R350 or more in store and get your own to make your life a tad easier.

Miss Pretorius by Misspretorius - 1M ago

What’s up Cotton eaters, you good? Feeling rested after the weekend yet?

I have to be honest and say that I’m still exhausted but it’s a good kinda exhaustion. I was fortunate enough to be present when SA history was made and I wouldn’t change it for anything! If you’ve been living under a rock, I’m of course referring to the inaugural #Cottonfest that took place the past weekend. Riky Rick promised us an amazing event and we got so much more, so much more than we bargained for!

Upon arrival there were already so many people chilling outside the venue. I’m not quite sure if they were hoping for tickets to be sold at the gate or just waiting for friends to arrive but there were a lot! Entry to the venue were fairly easy with the standard security checks. Let’s talk about the venue: I’ve always seen Old Park Station and never thought it could be transformed but this is the 3rd event I’ve attended there and every time I’m pleasantly surprised. We were still waiting for friends of ours so we decided to walk around and get a feel for the place. Firstly, the fashion were dope! I love these kind of events as it allows you to express yourself, as Riky himself so often does. There were a stand where you could purchase Cottonfest merchandise with T-shirts for R300 and jumpers for R350, which were really dope.

One of my favourite spots were of course the Vaseline Man SA and Legends Barber shop collaborations. If you’re not aware, Riky is one of Vaseline Man’s ambassadors so it’s quite fitting that they’d get involved and Legends always keep him looking fresh.  You were able to get free T-shirts and some lotion when uploading pictures to Instagram and Twitter. There were also free haircuts and facials available and I took advantage of that by getting a dope undercut from Alfonso.

Let’s look past my Chewbacca lineage, shall we?

Next up there were a chill spot when you could rent a hookah/hubbly and chill with your friends while still being able to hear the music. The Castle Lite chill spot had “snow” sporadically blowing out and it added to the chill factor along with the cool “photo booth” (not a photo booth per se, more like a tunnel where you’re able to take pictures). I’ve chilled in the Playstation area for a bit as they had bean bags and I could legally shoot my friend, on his birthday nogal, while playing (I forgot the game’s name). I also tried my hand at “Need for Speed” but there’s clearly a reason why I don’t have a licence yet. Yfm had their own photo booth with props and a chill area as did MTV. Lipton Ice Tea had a cool stand where, if you take a picture with their frame you get a free ice tea and the Wifi password for their zone as we all know Wifi is “life” especially when free. They also had a Jenga game going which I didn’t even attempt to do as I know I’m bad at anything that requires balance.

Further to your right you had the Castle Lite bar to get your fill of drinks before heading to “Stage 2” where we had various acts as seen in the picture below. Up the stairs you had “Stage 1” where most of the established acts were performing. Castle Lite also made sure that your glasses stayed topped up here with a bar and chill zone at the back. Upon approaching the stage, you had some artwork/graffiti happening live as well as VIP stations on the side. No VIP tickets were sold so I assume these were reserved for sponsors and/or friends of Riky. The stage was where the magic were happening but unfortunately I didn’t see all the acts as I tried to split my time between up- and downstairs.

Line-up

From the acts I saw Moonchild definitely stood out for me, I mean she’s a vibe, an entire vibe! She really left everything on stage and had people going crazy! Anatii was amazing, as was expected and AKA was his Supermega self and ended off his set with “Fela in Versace”. It was my first time seeing Shane Eagle live and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. Bragga aka Nadia Nakai brought her A-game and all these led to the perfect build-up for the man himself, Riky Rick!  His performance was electrifying, to say the least and it was definitely worth being there almost the entire day. He has really build up a solid fan base of people who love and respect him and his music. It was evident by the looks on their faces when he hit the stage with some shedding actual tears. A lot of the attendees were students that probably wouldn’t be able to afford the “normal’ ticket prices to shows like these so the fact that tickets were so affordable really accommodated everyone.  It was an overall amazing experience for myself and my crew and we obviously can’t wait for next year to do this again.

There were of course snags as it’s still in its infancy stage but nothing that can’t be fixed. One of the snags were that it’s easily accessible and a lot of people just chilled on the street or in their apartments, listening to the music. Some of those on the streets were guilty of bad behaviour and the police had to step in. Attendees that arrived around 10pm weren’t allowed in due to that so they sadly lost out. Unfortunately we live in a country where people get “over-excited” and this was a much-anticipated and hyped-up event so even non-ticket holders showed up in hordes. Another thing were the food stands: There weren’t enough vendors catering for the masses as I’ve only counted 3x places selling food like wings and fries as well as sausage rolls. Food were quite overpriced (but normal for an event) as a “wors rol” was sold for R60 with very limited condiments and a 20+ minute waiting time.  The two stages were an amazing idea but dividing time between them wasn’t easy as firstly, there’s stairs involved (which is a good workout) but what do you do if two acts you really want to see perform at the same time? There weren’t a lot of fashion aspects to the event and I really looked forward to that (aside from interesting outfits sported by event goers).

PEARL THUSI BREAKS BOUNDARIES AS
COMEDY CENTRAL’S FIRST FEMALE ROASTMASTER
ON THE CONTINENT!

Who else but the radiant “Black Pearl” has the guts and sass to crack the whip and mediate the “Bonfire of the Vanities” when famous rapper AKA will get roasted by ten of South Africa’s biggest names? “Mama Pantha” has done it again, breaking yet another social boundary by being the first woman in Africa to host what promises to be the Roast of the century. The Comedy Central Roast of AKA in partnership with Showmax is coming to The Teatro at Montecasino on Thursday, 21 February 2019.

With her grand reputation for sophisticated wit and oozing charisma, she will step into the pit with 6-inch heels to throw shade on this spectacular bout. Sharper than a scalpel, she has chased her dreams faster than a “pantha” could catch a mouse, rising from strength to strength in her local and international career. As presenter on both MTV’s Lip Sync Battle Africa and the highlight rated MTV Base’s Behind The Story, she is the hottest candidate for knowing how to fuel the fire or calm the storm in this role as Comedy Central Roast Master.

This is the woman every woman wants to be; tall, graceful, smart and the only one who can walk through fire and come out “pearl-fectly” groomed!

Pearl Thusi said, “I’m very excited to be the Roast Master and to work with Comedy Central for the first time. To be the first female Roast Master in Africa and first black woman globally is a great achievement. To AKA – we’ve talked a lot of mess on twitter and in private, but now we’re going to settle this in front of the world, with no one to protect you. This is deeper than rap beef. It will be on stage and to your face. I honestly can’t wait. Oh, and I won’t be alone as I’ve got a team of Roasters with me. So poetic. Just remember: COMPOSURE,  COMPOSURE!”

The Comedy Central Roast of AKA in partnership with Showmax will be hilarious, thought-provoking and without reservations, this Roast is the perfect grill for an audience who enjoys sitting on the edge of their seats.

Dillon KhanVice President for Comedy Central and Creative Services at Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa): “Our phones have been inundated with celebrities who want to be on the Comedy Central Roast especially with AKA in the firing line. Having someone as fierce as Pearl at the helm means AKA is guaranteed to be hit close to home. The revelations will be televised.”

Candice Fangueiro, Showmax’s Head of Content concluded, “Showmaxers love to laugh but we still had to take our brave pills to put the last Roast on Showmax fully uncensored. This fresh Roast led by Pearl is set to take things even further – viciously funny and downright rude, just the way our viewers like it. I can’t wait.”

Filming of the Comedy Central Roast of AKA in partnership with Showmaxwill be open to the public and will take place on Thursday, 21 February 2019 atThe Teatro, Montecasino in Johannesburg.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTH AFRICA LAUNCH THE #BACKOURTEAM CAMPAIGN LEADING UP TO THE WORLD SUMMER GAMES.

98 SOUTH AFRICANS TO REPRESENT SOUTH AFRICA AT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS SUMMER GAMES IN ABU DHABI THIS MARCH.

7 500 ATHLETES FROM AROUND THE GLOBE TO COMPETE IN OVER 20 OLYMPIC TYPE SPORTING CODES.

Special Olympics South Africa officially launched the #BackOurTeam campaign, a call to all South Africans to get behind the Special Olympics South Africa national team on the “Road to Abu Dhabi”.

A team of 70 determined and inspirational athletes will be looking for further support from South Africans with funds to help them reach their goal of representing South Africa on a global stage.

The games will be held from the 14th-21st of March 2019, where 7 500 athletes from around the globe will compete in over 20 Olympic type sporting codes.

Dr Mathews Phosa, Chairman of Special Olympics South Africa opened the proceedings and requested public support, We are asking South Africa to get behind our national team.  He continued, Every day our athletes face prejudice, discrimination and a lack of belief in their abilities. Coupled with limited access to sports facilities and equipment and perhaps the most heart-breaking of all, very little support or acknowledgement from our society. However, despite all of these obstacles our athletes remain committed and they persevere, oh my word do they persevere.  South Africa lets Back Our Team this year.

The record number of participating athletes and Unified Partners, including the highest number of women to ever participate in a Special Olympics World Games, will compete across 11 venues in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, while the build-up to the Games will be a nationwide celebration with the Law Enforcement Torch Run® and the Host Town program take place in all seven emirates of the UAE.

The  Games will act as a catalyst for inclusion, building a lasting legacy of improved health, education, and opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities long after the Closing Ceremony of the World Games.

Special Olympics South Africa CEO, Ancilla Smith shared the successes of the South African team at the last World Games and thanks all attendees for their continued support, We are eternally grateful to businesses and initiatives who support us, one being the National Lotteries Commission who have generously backed our team with funds for flights. We hope to raise further funds for the team through the Adopt an Athlete Campaign and hope to bring home even more medals than ever before.

Through the “Adopt an athlete campaign”, we are calling on companies and individuals to adopt an athlete for R35 000 to ensure our athletes have the opportunity to compete with pride and are well equipped amongst the 7500 athletes attending.

The Special Olympics team will depart from OR Tambo on the 7th of March 2019 and will be hoping to replicate the same success of the 2015 Special Olympics South Africa Summer games team who returned victorious with 61 medals in Los Angeles.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S BIGGEST CLASSICAL STARS, ANDREA BOCELLI HAS CONFIRMED TWO SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR DATES IN 2019.

I often get asked what my favourite genre of music is and people tend to be surprised that opera and classical music features on my list. It’s quite simple, you listen to different music, depending on the mood you’re in or mood you’d like to create. My love for classical music started at my matric dance, weird as it may sound.  We were in the car, enroute and I was really nervous as we had a red carpet, photographers as well as a crowd of people, calling your name from the sidelines awaiting us. My partner tried to calm me down as he didn’t know how to deal with social anxiety, to no avail. Our car was a classic Mercedes (also where my love for classic/vintage cars started) and the driver, a primary school teacher of his, asked if he could play some music to help me. I didn’t think it would help but agreed nevertheless. He turned on his music player and the sounds of “Liberta” by Andrea Bocelli filled the car. I could feel the anxiety just flowing out of me an been in love with his music since that night.

He didn’t have a good start in life with doctors advising his mom to abort him as they predicted he would be born with a disability. His parents refused and it was evident at birth that he had numerous problems with his sight. He lost his sight at age 12 in a football accident when he was hit in the eye and suffered brain hemorrhage. According to his mother, music was the only thing that could soothe him and was able to play various instruments by age 6. He won his first competition at age 14 and as they say, the rest is history. He completed law school but music remained his first love, as it rightly should because he is absolutely amazing! He has several accolades including being nominated at the Grammy’s as “Best New Artist” in 1999, a Golden Globe award with Celine Dion for “The Prayer”, being named one of  People’s Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” in 1998 and making the Guinness Book of World Records with the release of his classical album Sacred Arias, as he simultaneously held the top three positions on the US Classical Albums charts amongst others.

He recently released “Fall On Me’ with his son Matteo Bocelli that touch my heart strings like no other song managed to do in a while.
