So you have decided that this is the year you are doing that amazing outdoor landscaping project. You’ve got your budget set aside and you and your spouse have been dreaming of this amazing outdoor patio with a fire pit, beautiful landscaping beds around it, some lighting, and a pergola. You are open for other suggestions to make the space look amazing, now the only trouble is who do I hire?? This can be overwhelming as landscaping covers such a broad spectrum of services. Some companies specialize in hardscapes and patios, others in plants and horticulture, others in mowing and maintenance. Then there are companies that specialize in irrigation, water features, seeding, and then here’s the best one “We do everything.” If a company tells you they are good at every aspect of the landscape industry, in most cases you should not believe them.

So what are 4 things you should look for in a Landscape Contractor? First, you should always ask what the company specializes in. The biggest mistakes I see homeowners make when deciding on a Landscape Contractor is they never ask what areas does your company specialize in? This is a real question that you can gauge does this contractors skills align with the project you are looking to complete. If the company primarily mows lawns and fertilizes, I would not hire them to build your water feature.

Secondly, ask about their design process. If a company can not provide a professional landscape design than you may want to continue your search. Landscape design rendering technology has become very vivid and real, and most good Landscape Companies are offing 3-D renderings. Usually you will pay an upfront cost for landscape renderings but it is well worth the money to understand exactly what your project will look like before construction takes place. If you are spending $15,000 or more on your project, I would definitely
consider a design rendering. You should be able to openly discuss with your Landscape Contractor “should I have a rendering for this project, what do you recommend.”

Third thing, do not shop based on price, give a budget. Budget should always be discussed before you start a design. The wort thing you can say when asked about a budget is I don’t really have one. The other answer is I don’t know how much this is going to cost. You have to do your research and figure out a ballpark range of what you are willing to invest in your landscape design. One companies Landscape Designer will have different ideas and design for your project then another company may have. Giving theses contractors an upfront budget allows them to design your project within that budget. Prioritize your goals with the contractor on what aspects of the project you would most like to see your budget allocated to. If you give a budget to a contractor then you don’t have to shop based on price, your shopping based on what design you like most that fits within your budget. You can also ask about doing your project in phases.

Finally, hire someone whom you feel you trust. Sometimes the larger companies are not the best companies to hire. You don’t get the personal attention from ownership and you may have less experienced workers because they are just pumping out volume. You should be able to gain good rapport with a contractor over a 10 minute phone call. Weed out the ones that don’t call you back or sound unprofessional. Ask yourself, are we a good fit to work together, do we communicate well, are my phone calls and emails returned on a timely basis. If you are in the West Michigan area and looking for an outstanding landscape design firm or just some more info on this discussion, then contact Platinum Ponds & Landscaping today!

Have you ever seen a large pond in a condominium complex, home development, or a business park that has a green film and excessive weed growth on its shoreline. Perhaps you have a pond near your home and you think to yourself, “if this pond could only be cleaned up up of all the algae and cattails it would be a beautiful pond.” Many pond and water companies out there feel the best way to treat these murky water ponds is to dump chemicals or water treatments into the water to help clean them up. Others, decide to add blue dyes to the water and cover up and mask the problem. These alternatives can help but the key to a clean pond or aquatic system is to work with mother nature instead of fight against her. The Answer is a Wetland Filtration System.

The Dept. of Environmental Quality protects natural wetlands because they naturally filter water running through them into a larger bodies of water. Natural Wetlands filter water by flowing through a series of stone, gravels, and aquatic plants to naturally filter the water. The same concept can be implemented into a natural or man made pond. The team at Aquascape Inc. has developed a system called a Wetland Filtration System shown in the diagrams shown in this article. The pond starts with an intake bay or a housing system where a pump is installed to pull water from one edge of the pond and push it into a constructed Wetland Filter built along the ponds upper shoreline edge. A formula of the Wetland Filter’s size is determined by the ponds approximate square footage. The water is then pumped into the bottom of the Wetland Filter where it moves slowly up through a layer of Aquablox and different size washed stone (see diagrams) before falling back into the Pond. The Pond now has a circulating system that pulls water from one side of the pond and moves it up through the Wetland Filter and back into the pond.

Wetland Filtration is great for smaller ponds with a large fish load. The formula for a safe fish load in a pond is approximately 1″ of fish per 10 gallons of water. For example, if there is a high fish load in a 500 Square Foot Koi Pond, an approx 100 Square Foot Wetland Filter installed on the ponds edge

can be a great way to keep that pond not only looking crystal clear, but also safe for your fish if there is a more concentrated fish load in your backyard pond.

The Pond Experts at Platinum Ponds & Landscaping are certified Aquascape Contractors and we have implemented the Wetland Filtration systems into our customers large ponds and the results have been stunning! No more algae and pond sludge. No more murky ugly water with green film. The water is naturally cleaned by the wetland filter and Ponds that our customers have had algae issues for years are now solved. To learn more about Wetland Filtration and to find out if if is a good fit for your pond, please contact the team at Platinum Ponds & Landscaping or visit miponds.com today!

This fantastic front entryway landscape was designed and built by Platinum Ponds & Landscaping in July of 2017. The customer came to us with a desire to completely renovate their front walkway, planting beds, plant design, boulder design, retaining walls, and much more.

Similar to most all of our landscape design projects, this project started with a landscape design concept which was brought to life with our 3D Landscape Design Software.

This process entails us speaking with the homeowner with their thoughts on color and stone choice, how they would like to use the space, plant preferences, budget, and other details.

Platinum Ponds & Landscaping then takes this information after we fully understand our customer’s vision, and a 3D design concept is created. We then take the design concept to the homeowner, and we make revisions based on their feedback.

The walkway was flawlessly constructed. Plant design, boulder placement, edging, and mulch brought this entire front entryway together for an extraordinary landscape!

If you or someone you know is interested in a Water Feature or Landscape Design, please call the team at Platinum Ponds & Landscaping today at 616-581-8124 to schedule a consultation.

Are you thinking about renovating your backyard Koi Pond or having a new Pond or water feature installed in your West Michigan home? This amazing Koi Pond was renovated and completely reconstructed by Platinum Ponds & Landscaping in June of 2018. Platinum Ponds & Landscaping specializes in Ponds and Water Features as well as landscape design and implementation services.

This particular Koi Pond had been originally constructed in 2014 to a previous homeowner. The homeowner purchased the home after the pond had been installed so they inherited this pond. At first they were thrilled to be pond owners but quickly started learning about the pond’s issues. The Client’s main concerns were a great and safe home for their beloved Koi fish. The walls were caving in because of poor stone work, the pond leaked, and the pond was overgrown with lilies and other aquatic plants that were very invasive. These factors contributed to poor water quality and aesthetic appearance. The Ponds Boifalls, which is the mechanical spillway reservoir that filters the ponds water was constructed way too high above grade. The pond had a “volcano effect” which means there was a large cone shaped mound coming up out the the ground which appeared like a pile of small cobble stone. The waterfalls were constructed with flagstone which also contributes to poor aesthetic design.

The customer originally contacted us to fix the issues of the caving walls and rebuild the main waterfalls. However, after further diagnosis of the pond’s poor construction and leaking issues the homeowner agreed that the pond needed a full reconstruction.

The Platinum Ponds & Landscaping expert Pond Installation team was quick to the task of demoing the existing pond and began installing new liner, boulders, waterfalls, plumbing, and overflow system. We salvaged the existing aquatic lights, but other that that the pond was a complete new reconstruction. After 5 days of artistic rock work and and hard labor the team installed this brand new 16’X11′ Koi Pond with a 15′ stream which meandered below the overpassing decorative bridge. Please check out the before and after pics!

This large pond project was designed and built by Platinum Ponds & Landscaping in June of 2018 in Belmont, MI. The client contacted us to consult on a large depressed existing pond in a wooded backyard of their West Michigan residence. The property set on several acres and the natural pond was extremely murky and full of sediment, thus not pleasing in appearance.
The reason they wanted our help is they wanted to enjoy a clean looking pond that they could see the bottom of the pond, enjoy the sound of a waterfall, and attract wildlife. They homeowner really loved deer, fish, and other types of wildlife that the pond would attract. They also wanted to add underwater lighting, and have a night area to enjoy with family and friends. All of these factors played a factor in how we designed our client’s pond.
The project came with many challenges. First, we had to dig several feet of sediment out of the existing pond. The pond design included a 45′ Length x 35′ Width x 2′-3′ deep pond that would have a pond liner. Before this pond liner could be installed, the Platinum Ponds & Landscaping team had the difficult task of removing the sediment with a large excavator. The biggest challenge was the amount of moisture and water that was in the soil around the pond, as well as the fact that the pond access had an extremely steep grade. We had to maneuver through trees and had lots of challenges avoiding getting our machinery stuck or bumping into trees.
The Platinum Ponds & Landscaping team persevered through the project challenges and we were absolutely thrilled at the outcome. The Large Pond is designed to stock different types of fish, has aquatic lighting, aquatic plants, and an algae control system. It also has a main large water fall which draws water through a skimmer on the opposite side of the pond to allow for proper oxygenation and circulation for optimum water quality. Now our client can enjoy the beautiful outdoors with the site of a clean, healthy pond, as well as enjoy the sounds and site of an amazing waterfall to attract wildlife.
If you are thinking about improving your large pond, or adding a new one, contact Platinum Ponds & Landscaping to schedule a design consultation
