I was delighted to be invited to RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2019 on a personal mission to find out what the worlds best garden designers are doing to help get children back outside and inspire the next generation to love gardening and the world around them. This was my first time at Chelsea as I have been busy raising three girls for the last 10 years, and this is not an event you can take your children too. However, I successfully snuck away whilst they were all busy at school and enjoyed a much appreciated day of escapism, wandering amongst the stunning plants and gardens and the visiting celebrities that also attend on Press Day. Gardens provide the backdrop for many happy childhood memories, be it digging up worms in the school garden, searching for woodlice under a log, picking apples in a grandparents garden, or kicking a ball around a lawn. Yet sadly fewer and fewer children are getting the opportunity to spend time enough outdoors, and social media and computer games are proving to be an increasing distraction. As well as providing happy memories, the benefits for children’s physical and mental well-being of spending time outdoors are […]

We went to see ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other stories’ as a family of four; two adults, an autistic 5 year old and a 7 month old. The Hungry Caterpillar is a firm favourite in our house so we couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to review! The theatre (Epstein, Liverpool) is a nice size for family shows, not too big not too small. The stage was simple, a nice white background with beautiful coloured lights and gentle music throughout. And then there was the puppets…. they were immense! They were manned by three puppeteers who were also telling the stories, and they were beautiful. The way they moved was so clever and really helped the stories develop! The stories were The Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, 10 Rubber Ducks and The Lonely Firefly. Each story brought the puppets to life, I particularly enjoyed 10 Rubber Ducks! Considering my children have a considerable age difference between them they both thoroughly enjoyed it, I think the music and lighting attracted my daughter (7 months) and the stories appealed to my son (5 years). It was a real pleasure to take them, with all the kids (and parents) getting involved and excited […]

Last night I tried something new. Something daring and different and I liked it- I liked it a lot! I went to the theatre on my own- it wasn’t a planned thing; my date for the evening was poorly and, at late notice people either had plans including a Game of Thrones Finale Party and a Pint of Science event. What can I say, I have a fantastic and eclectic bunch of friends! (As an aside; check a pint of science out by the way; It is basically chatting to scientists over a pint about their latest research. What an amazing way to make science more accessible and attainable- well done scientists- clearly not one trick ponies 😊 ) So, I hopped on the bus, had a chat with a lovely lady about the quality of the Tesco Magazine and the fact you can buy the ingredients anywhere you fancy! I then hopped off again and wondered up in to the theatre through St Johns Gardens taking in the lights and statues and revelling in the evening sunshine- glorious. On arrival at the Liverpool Empire I grabbed a glass of wine and took my seat. The couple next to me […]

On 18 May, Kew Gardens opens its new Children’s Garden to the public. This marks an exciting new chapter for younger visitors to the historic Kew Gardens. Mini Travellers were lucky to be given a sneak preview of the Children’s Garden, and have been counting down the days until it opened to the public so we can visit again. In keeping with the rest of Kew Gardens, the educational opportunities are not forgotten, and the core theme of the Garden are all the four elements plants need to grow. There is an ‘Earth Garden’ where children can whizz down enormous cylindrical slides into sand, where they can dig and play until their hearts are content. In the ‘Air Garden’ they can marvel at the windmills, lie in a giant hammock, hop across giant colourful spheres and bounce on mini trampolines. The ‘Water Garden’ has the a fantastic water play area, with plenty of opportunities for children to divert streams, make big puddles and jump across stepping stones. Grown-ups may enjoy the ‘Sun Garden’ the most, with plenty of seating in perspex tunnels, which provide a wonderful warm and colourful outlook, through which to watch children play.  The Garden is set […]
