If we see a car accident we stop. We check to see if people are ok. We call an ambulance if we need to. We call the police if we need to. We offer first aid if we can. We try to help. Because we know what to do, and the exact path to follow to get help.

National not-for-profit charity Mental Health Australia has been forced into court this week, and stands to lose more than $250,000 after receiving bad advice and mixed messages from the ACT Government Long Service Scheme. Mental Health Australia CEO Frank Quinlan said the confusion around whether the charity is ‘in or out’, of the ACT Government Long Service Scheme could have a devastating impact on the charity, and needs to be resolved urgently.

This week I attended a workshop on Indigenous Suicide. It is hard not to feel hopeless and impotent in the face of suicide statistics that see our Indigenous brothers and sisters taking their lives at dramatically higher rates that the rest of the Australian population.

I couldn’t watch the news last night. I was with my wife and we both agreed that we just couldn’t do it. During the day I had heard on the radio a harrowing account given in the wake of the Sri Lankan attacks.
