We love wool! For rug hooking and other fiber arts nothing quite compares to wool whether it’s fabric or yarns. Our selection of rug hooking fabric is extensive and now we are pleased to also include hand dyed bulky yarn for rug hooking or your punch needle projects. We selected a few of our most popular spot dyes to introduce the collection and Carla is working on adding more colours from our dyed fabric line. However, until then, we welcome any requests from our selection of spot dyed and mottled solid wool fabrics. New colours will be added to the website shortly. These are full skeins of 100% wool 4 ply bulky yarn containing approximately 85 yards. The yarn is equal to a #7 or #8 cut strip in rug hooking and is worked beautifully on a regular size needle punch tool. A 2 ply yarn option is available upon request.
We are having a sale on dyed wool including spots, artisanal, striated wools and mottled solids that are dyed on our original Studio Natural and Dorr wool. This photo is just a sampling of the large amount of stock we need to clear out in order to make room for our new products. The sale is in studio only from Wednesday April 24th – Saturday April 27th. Any remaining items will be available online on May 1st. This is a rare opportunity to stock up on your favourite dyed wools.
Every year we resolve to be ready well in advance of the Annual Conference but somehow we end up in a frenzy in the final days trying to get everything done. This year we had a minor set back as Carla (the studio dyer) was hospitalized for a few days which put us behind schedule. I’m happy to say that she is recovered, back to work, and dyeing up a storm! In these last days we are trying to stock up as much as possible however, if you want to guarantee that the items you want are available, you can email or call us to place your order in advance. Please note that the studio will be closed this week from Thursday Apr. 11- Sunday Apr. 14th.
New! “Fun Gi” Trivets patterns by Carla Kumer. Appropriately named as these 11×11 trivets will be fun to hook. They make wonderful hostess gifts too! These are now on the website and will be available this weekend. We look forward to seeing you in London.
Not long ago we introduced a new natural wool fabric for dyeing. The reviews were very positive and it sold out quickly. However, we wanted to hear the negatives too. Although there weren’t many, we felt we could tweak some aspects to make it exceptional. We consulted the experts at the mill with our requests and they were able to perfect our Studio Natural. A higher quality yarn was used in the milling resulting in a softer hand and less lint in your dryer and the weave was tightened up for an exceptional fine cut. It cuts like a dream on a #3 and it dyes beautifully. It is soft and fluffy out of the dryer with a nice loft and the weight is generous at 13 ounces. All this and minimal shrinkage. This wool does not need to be washed before dyeing. Our complete line of dyed wools will now be exclusively on our new Studio Natural. This line will be featured at the OHCG Annual Conference this weekend and we invite you to stop by our booth to see and feel this exceptional wool. If you will not be attending, email us your request and address for a free sample. We look forward to seeing you this weekend.
We are excited to introduce our 2019 Spring Collection of wool fabrics designed and milled exclusively for the studio. The collection is a mix of rich colour and must have neutrals. The plaids were designed with low contrast values which will create subtle variations in your rug hooking and fiber art projects. We also increased the weight which results in a luxurious cloth that cuts beautifully and maintains stability at a #4 cut. You will notice that there is quite a difference in colour of Lake Louise from the group photo. It is difficult to get the exact colour of each individual wool when they are in a group. The photo below is an excellent representation of the actual colour. Just imagine the colour of Lake Louise. Click on this link to see the complete collection https://martinalesar.com/product-category/wool-fibers/martina-lesar-wool/
This collection is available now on the website and in the studio. It will also be featured at the 2019 OHCG Annual in London in April. All “Martina Lesar” wool fabrics are 100% wool and 36.00 per yard Canadian. Shipping is free for orders over 150.00
All our new products will be available at these two upcoming events. If you have any requests, please call or email to reserve items and we can have them set aside for you. This is highly recommended for patterns as they sell out quickly. The studio will be closed for these two events. The Events page calendar on the website is frequently updated and provides notification of studio closures.
The OHCG Annual Conference in London, Ontario at the Lamplighter Inn. April 12-14th
Canadian Artist, J.E.Bailey (Elizabeth) creates artwork that delights audiences at home and internationally. Unique and unapologetically playful, this artist believes meaningful messages can be communicated through whimsy and laughter. “Joy and delight are a shared language.” Distinctly Canadian in character, much of what Elizabeth depicts reveals the nature of the home she loves and the illusive Canadian National identity captured in treasured iconic images. With a vibrant palette, a quirky and humorous outlook, this artist has an uncanny ability to capture those things we hold most dear. Elizabeth has granted us the exclusive license to produce her delightful art into rug hooking patterns. Her body of work is extensive and we had a challenging task selecting the first images to launch this line. They are all so wonderful that it was difficult to choose. Patterns are hand drawn on linen foundation and a colour photo of the original artwork is included with every pattern. We invite you to browse through the 5 collections which are now available in the studio and on the website. New patterns will continue to be added to this collection as they are developed.
“The subject matter for many of my creations grew in childhood. Many hours spent sketching animals from the pages of Walter Fosters Learn to Draw Book, Doctor Doolittle singing of ‘Talking to the Animals’ and Thornton Burgess bedtime stories about the Green Meadow read to me by my father gave me a strong connection to nature. These things took root in my imagination and my mind’s eye began to conjure images of anthropomorphic animals dressed in flannel shirts and overalls, all sharing their world with mine. Each day I spend in my studio is a delight, as these characters come to life before me. Making things has been part of my DNA since before I became conscious of it. I love participating in any gesture that elicits in others a sense of joy and glee. Art, as I discovered, is one of the best ways to do that. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I have revelled in its creation.”
There are 5 categories in the J.E. Bailey collection. Each category contains many wonderful patterns. The photos below represent what each has to offer.
“Cottage Country” Collection
The Great White North evokes a feeling of strength, serenity and calm and hints at a place for retreat and rest. Having spent family holidays at a beloved summer cottage on the shores of Lake Bernard near Algonquin Park in Ontario, J.E.Bailey spent summer days, paddling canoes, searching for frogs, collecting waterlilies and gathering inspiration for her imagined world.
The Red Canoe
“Head In the Clouds” Collection
Whimsy and playfulness are a long standing tradition of the folk art that Canada is known for. These elements are never far from J.E.Bailey’s creations and it is natural that this artists feels so at home in this style of visual imagery. These reminiscent and gleeful works are sure to leave a smile on your face.
Jumping Over the Moon
“O’ Canada” Collection
Creating wonderfully whimsical works of art is a dream come true for artist J.E.Bailey with all things Canadian to inspire her. Mounties, Moose, and a myriad of other iconic ‘Maple Leaf Forever’ images pepper her studio and sketch books.
“Home Is Where the HeArt Is” Collection
“Home is where the He’ART’ is could not be more true for this whimsical folk artist. Living in a small hamlet in Halton Hills, where neighbours come together for community breakfasts, local celebrations and tubing down the Credit River, J.E. Bailey’s idyllic images come to life everyday. For this artist, there really is ‘no place like home’ and she is inspired every day by the goings on there.
“Down on the Farm” Collection
J.E.Bailey lived for a time in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. The girls loved to visit farms and so this artist began to paint pictures of all of the furry farm animals living in the area. The children were often helpful assistants in the studio and these early years developing her whimsical style were inspired by the glee of viewing the world through the eyes of her two daughters.
Have you any wool? We will be featuring all these patterns at the OHCG annual in London, however, if you would like to reserve any of these or other items, please email or call and we will have them ready for pick up at the booth.
Starting a new project is one of the best parts of rug hooking for me. So many possibilities which usually take some thought before I dive into the actual hooking. This time however, there was no debate about colour. As soon as I saw this design on Sarah Skrlj’s instagram page, I knew I wanted to hook this into a cushion. She graciously allowed me to add it to our line of patterns. “Mandala” is 20×20 and I plan on using a pale grey background with the design in coal and natural. I believe the complexity of the design will be emphasized by the simple colour plan or actually, lack of colour, just like Sarah’s drawing. Another addition is “Tivoli”. Spectacular bold floral on a complex tile background. This masterpiece will require a skilled hand in fine shading or painterly hooking. Both of these are now on the website under the “Pattern” pages…Sarah Skrlj Designs.
Our newest handspun yarns are exactly as described…rustic, primitive and untamed. Rustico is spun into wildly thick and thin yarn. We requested a highly varied yarn to give maximum texture in your rug hooking. The yarn is not relaxed which will allow you to hook in some tight twists resulting in a curl in the loop. Again, we chose to keep these skeins as mini’s, since a little goes a long way in rug hooking, thus allowing you to purchase multiple colours of our small skeins for the price of one large. More colours are being produced for this line and we will add them to the website as soon as they arrive. Each skein is approx. 1oz and priced at 6.75 You can find them in the studio or on the “Wool/Fibers” page under “Yarn” category. For a short time they are also listed on the “New Arrivals” page. We welcome your feedback on all our new products.
It’s wonderful that we are exploring new fibers in our rug hooking and fiber arts. To add to the line of Alternative Fibers, we are delighted to introduce our newest product… Wool Roving. This is an all Canadian product from farm to mill. The 100% wool rovings are made using predominantly dorset type wool, which is a wool of medium fibre thickness and good durability. It is excellent for rug hooking, needle felting, spinning and other fiber arts. They are available in seven collections with each package containing 4 colours totaling approximately 3 1/2 to 4 ounces per package. These are now available in studio and online on the “New Arrivals” page and the “Alternative Fibers” page under “Wool/Fibers”. Package price 10.00
