The prospect of an ecologically sustainable organic garden that is presented by the “no-till” or “permaculture” approach to gardening is attractive to gardeners for many reasons: there’s the low cost; the minimal work; the high quality produce; and, the peace of mind that you get from knowing that the way you are growing your food is not a detriment to the environment, or the living things that share the garden ecosystem. With all that having been said, and despite many claims to the contrary – no-till gardens are not pest free – at least not initially. In this episode I discuss the pest problems that I have encountered thus far my garden, an how I deal with them.

The increase of tick populations and the risk of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses is a growing concern for many gardeners and lovers of the outdoors. Since knowledge is always the best first step in dealing with any problem, I thought it would make sense to talk to a scientist about ticks, so in this episode I talk to a biologist who researches ticks and Lyme disease! Dr. Vett Lloyd is a professor of Biology at Mount Allison University working on ticks and the pathogens they transmit. Have a listen and let me know what you think!

Here’s some of Dr. Lloyd’s publications if you’re in the mood for some interesting reading:

As an organic gardening enthusiast, I get a lot of questions from viewers and listeners about chemicals, poisons and toxins, so I thought I would do an episode on this topic, and luckily for us, Dr. Joe Schwarcz was kind enough to field all my questions! Have a listen as Dr. Joe educates us about these terms, and then breaks down all the chemical constituents in the products that I sometimes use in my garden.

If you have any questions for Dr. Joe, you can email them to joe.schwarcz@mcgill.ca. If you are interested in learning more about the Office of Science and Society at Mcgill University, check out their website at mcgill.ca/oss.

The sunchoke (AKA “Jerusalem artichoke”, “sunroot”, “earth apple”, etc.) – despite it’s lack of an etymologically elegant, or even apropos name – is nonetheless a valuable addition to any garden. Easy to grow; tolerates lousy soil; drought resistant; pest resistant; maintenance free; delicious to eat; and economical to grow!!! My goodness what’s the downside? Well, where there’s ying, there’s often yang, and it’s not all ying where the sunchoke is concerned… but it’s mostly ying, and that’s good enough for me! In this episode I talk all about the underappreciated sunchoke: a little history, when to plant, how to grow, when to harvest, and even some cooking tips.

Here’s some videos I’ve done already on sunchokes:

Anyone that’s been following my podcast or YouTube videos knows by now that I don’t till my soil, and as a result, I spend very little time weeding & watering, and no time tilling! In this episode I catch up with former guest Lee Reich and discuss his approach to gardening and his book entitled “Weedless Gardening”. Lee sent me a copy of this book moths ago, and having read it thoroughly, I have to say that it’s one of the better books available on the topic of no-till gardening, and offers both the novice and experienced gardener a comprehensive introduction to the no-till approach.

Download the ‘Planting Dates For Vegetables’ spreadsheet file here (please note, this zip file will need to be extracted. Once you open the file, click “enable editing” and “enable content” to be able to use the table properly. I’ll make a video with more explanation very soon for those with questions about the table ).

If you are interested in Lee’s Book, follow this link:

However long your growing season is, you’d probably like it to be a little longer. In my garden, where I’m challenged each year to get a yield before the frosts begin in the fall, it’s important to get things started as early as possible, especially since I direct-seed just about everything, and don’t like to use transplants. In this episode I run through the various tricks that I’ve developed over the years to make my system work despite less than ideal growing conditions, and also talk about a couple new harebrained ideas I have for the coming year.

If you enjoyed this content, please check out my YouTube channel. Where I show many examples of the things that I discuss in my podcast. Also, check out my sponsors (see below), who have created coupon codes for all my listeners & viewers.

Hey folks, it’s 2019 and this is the 1st episode of season four of the Maritime Gardening Podcast! In this episode, since it’s the time of year when many of us make our decisions about what seeds we are going to buy and grow in our gardens, I thought it would be fun have a discussion about heirlooms and hybrids. I often hear permaculture/no-till/organic gardening gurus talking about heirloom seed varieties, their merits, and why they are the only thing you should grow in your garden. In this episode, I’m going to take that claim to task, and examine the pros and cons of the different seeds types.

If you enjoyed this content, please share this content with like-minded individuals and groups! Also, check out my sponsors (see below) who have provided coupon codes for all my listeners & viewers.

In this episode we catch up a bit, reminisce, rant, and talk about some behind the scenes-type stuff that you may find interesting. Have a listen!
