My name is Magali & welcome to my eponymous blog. I post about beauty, personal style, my travels, tech, food & other lifestyle content and I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with some of the very best brands out there. And with your help, I’ve built a thriving passionate global community for women to learn, share their experiences & more.
I love experimenting with my looks. Whether it’s trying new fashion trends, getting different hairstyles or the latest in makeup. In fact, I’ve had this blog for eight and a half years now & just going back a few years will show you some examples. My appearance has always been a form of self expression to me, I love having fun with it & I enjoy changing my look on a regular basis.
Changing my hair is one of the easiest ways to change my look – it’s been around three years since I first started colouring my hair & I’ve had it red, purple, black, blue & I’m probably forgetting a few. I’ve also experimented with hair rebonding & bleaching now and then. At any given week, I also heat style & use a variety of haircare and styling products.
I often see myths such that heat styling, hair sprays etc. can lead to hair fall. I’ve found those to be largely untrue. But there is no doubt that regular colouring, chemical treatments and heat styling does damage my hair, making it coarser & just more prone to breakage.
So even though I enjoy experimenting with my hair, I found myself having to take breaks from too much colouring etc. just to prevent further damage & breakage. Damage care shampoos only work to some extent because after all when your hair protein isn’t in good shape, there is very little an external product can do! I began looking at ways to holistically improve the quality of my hair so that it just grows stronger & better.
One thing that will definitely improve the quality of your hair is adding the right kind of nutritions & proteins to your diet & eating healthier. But it’s not always possible to get them in necessary doses from food.
From the past 3 months or so I’ve been taking HaiRootz Softlets – they’re easy to swallow gel capsules which contain a lot of essential minerals and vitamins such as selenium, iron and zinc, biotin, folic acid and calcium pantothenate. All ingredients that have been proven to help with strong, healthy hair growth.
This may not work overnight but it isn’t just another quick fix solution. It feels good to be thinking of long term hair health. Now I make sure to care for my hair, do regular oil massages but when I want to curl my hair for an event or fashion shoot, I go ahead & do it without any fear of breakage. x
I will be picking up winners who will win free HAiROOTZ Eva samples, so all you need to do is:
I’ve said this once & I’ll say it again – testing beauty products & tools has to be one of my favorite parts of being a blogger. Sometimes, I’ll compare very whimsical products (which is the best blue mascara out there?) While they aren’t necessities, they’re fun to use. But more often than not, I find myself feverishly testing products because they serve to fix a personal beauty problem I’m experiencing.
While my daily beauty routine can be quite minimal, I do have hair that’s naturally quite prone to frizz. Add Mumbai’s tropical climate into the mix (90% humidity today & it’s not even raining!)
I’ve spent many years (& more money than I’d care to admit) searching for the perfect hair dryer. I’ve bought cheap ones & expensive ones. They’ve usually been pleasing in some ways, but unusable in others.
• Health Breeze & Heat Balance Technologies – to ensure your hair doesn’t get heat damaged & warm air is distributed evenly.
• Crafted in Korea.
• Two Years Warranty
Whenever I try anything new, my first impressions are based on the design & I really like how this looks – the mostly white design with silver & transparent accents makes it look quite chic.
I travel a lot, so I immediately loved how compact this dryer was – most hotel rooms have dryers, but they’re pretty weak & take forever to actually dry my thick hair. Once, I was so exasperated that I ended up buying a very pricey salon grade dryer – sounds good right? Except, nobody told me how heavy it would be or that it would tire out my hands within two minutes of holding it. Lesson learnt; leave the salon hair dryers to the actually hairstyling professionals. I was still on the lookout, for some practical yet easy to use.
The Syska Trendsetter dryer is a respectable 1000W, so it has a good amount of power & airflow without ever getting too hot or too noisy. The power cord is long which is always handy as my plug point isn’t near the mirror & I can easily use this without resorting to an extension box.
The dryer works efficiently & dries my short but thick hair within just about five minutes. I’ve used to for regularly for around three weeks the heat is just right to leave my hair sleek & shiny without causing damage (although I always use a heat protectant before using hot tools).
You get just the dryer in the box, there are no extra nozzles or attachments. The transparent end works reasonably well as a concentrator, but there is no separate diffuser. I’ve never actually used a diffuser though, as it works better on volumising finer hair, I think this dryer is just perfect for everyday (or every wash) use when I’m at home or elsewhere.
I’ve really liked using this dryer, it helps keep my hair looking good without damage, is quick & easy to use, compact to travel with (because who has extra luggage space anyway?)
The Syska Trendsetter HD1605 Hair Dryer is priced really affordably at just ₹ 1,150 although you can get it even cheaper online. If you’re in the market for a new dryer, I would definitely recommend checking this one out!
Shaving is by far one of the easiest & quickest forms of hair removal but you can’t discount how important the razor is in having a smooth shaving experience. All razors aren’t created equal. I’ve been guilty of using a cheap disposable razor in a pinch (yep, I sometimes forget to pack my beauty essentials) & I found the experience to be uncomfortable & scratchy.
I’d been more than satisfied using the Gillette Venus razor but when I heard there was a new Gillette Venus Breeze razor being released, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! I’ve been using it for over a month now, about every other day & I think I’m ready to share my two cents on the new razor.
At a Glance – The Gillette Venus Breeze
The new Gillette Venus Breeze is quite a looker. All purple body with some translucent, rubberised bits that make it easier to grip, especially when you’re wet & slippery in a shower. But it’s not just looks – what truly sets the razor apart (the 2 in 1 bit) are the built in shave gel bars above & below the blades. These bars are supposed to completely eliminate the need for a shaving gel. Just wet up the razor & you’re totally good to go. The first cartridge is included with your razor (but packaged separately to keep the bars fresh & moisture free). Later on, the cartridges can be purchased in packs of two.
Depending on your frequency of usage, a cartridge can last anywhere between 1-3 months. I found that if improperly stored they do get extra soggy & that can decrease longevity.
When wet up the soap bars do give out a sort of slippery & moist gel (they call it light lather) that makes the razor glide super smooth. Even if you’re shaving at the last minute before stepping out, you can just place the razor under a tap for a few seconds & use it.
The lather may not be visible that much but it works quite well. Of course, using it during a bath / shower is always the best experience though. I was fairly impressed with the soap bar’s ability to lubricate my skin without getting spent. After a month of use, I can see that bars are more spent but I still have a few more uses before I change cartridges.
In case you’ve experiences dry or scratchy skin after shaving, I think the Gillette Venus Breeze does a very good job of eliminating that problem. As always though, regular exfoliation (at least twice weekly) & moisturization (once or twice a day) should be included in your routine.
I’ve had a very pleasant experience using the Gillette Venus Breeze, it’s made the already simple process of shaving my legs even easier, quicker & more comfortable (can I say breezier? or would that be too much?).
The Gillette Venus Breeze is now available in India, in stores & online. The Gillette Venus Breeze razor retails for ₹299 & a pack of two cartridges costs ₹350. x
Despite shaving being quick, easy & perfectly safe, I’ve also found a that there are a lot of undue & baseless myths associated with shaving – some of them are just old wives tales, while most others are repeated by ladies at beauty salon, worried that you’ll stop waxing & giving them business (hey, waxing may not seem that expensive just once, but those bills add up really quickly!)
I’ve previously discussed (& dispelled!) the myth that you need to press harder to get a close shave. Today I’m going to discuss the myth that you shouldn’t shave everyday as it damages your skin.
Every method of hair removal comes with it’s own set of pros & cons. One of the main reasons I chose shaving is because it really is one of the safest method that there is. It doesn’t violently yank out hair from the roots (like waxing or epilating), this can be disastrous for sensitive skin in the long run. It doesn’t involve the use of heavy machinery (laser hair removal) or harsh chemicals (like hair removal creams) & it can literally be done in the comfort of your home (or hotel room, if you’re travelling) anytime. There is no risk of any kind of long term damage or skin degradation even if you’ve shaved your entire life!
Of course, of the cons of shaving is that the effects of removing your hair are shorter lived & you do need to do it more often. You are free to adjust the frequency of shaving based on the speed of your hair growth as well as your personal preferences. A lot of people ask me, how often do I shave & whether shaving daily or very regularly is bad.
I have medium thick hair that grows back really fast. How often I shave will be depending on my schedule, mood or what I’m planning to wear. If I’m on a beach vacation & I know I’ll be wearing shorts a lot, I shave every other day. At home, I’ll shave a couple of times a week. It is totally safe to shave daily if you wish to. In fact, shaving in the shower is super efficient & won’t take more than a couple of minutes. Most people won’t have to, every with quick growing hair. But if you hair grows very quickly & you want silky smooth legs always, you can easily shave daily. Of course, make sure to moisturise (daily) & exfoliate (once or twice a week). These two steps are just taking care of your skin (you should do them even if you aren’t shaving!) & they will also prevent any occurrence of ingrown hair.
I’ve been using the new Gillette Venus Breeze 2 in 1 razor for the last couple of months (since it released) & I love how smooth & easy it is to use, the shave gel bars mean I don’t even need a separate shaving gel or foam. One cartridge (blades) last me over a month with regular use – it ends up being quite economical!
In summation- You can shave as rarely or as often as you like! It’s safe, quick & has no side effects at all.
I hope you’re finding this shaving series useful. Feel free to leave any questions in the comments below – you can even suggest future myths or topics you’d like me to cover! x
I am someone who really likes to keep my makeup simple & fuss free. I don’t use foundation or eyeshadow, ever. But I still really enjoy adding bits of colour into my looks, especially blue! I bought my first blue mascara last year – Inglot Color Play Mascara, you can even see it in action in this Get Ready With Me video, where I paired it with a saree & blue lipstick. While I definitely purchased it mainly for the colour, it promised a lot of great things – thickening, great volume effect & other that the blue, it delivered on none of those things. Sure it wasn’t a bad mascara, but I definitely expected more for ₹800!
When I recently heard that Lakmé was launching their own Blue Mascara, I was ecstatic. It sounded promising, is easily available & most of all, pretty affordable. But is it any good? I’ve been using it for a week now, & here’s what I think of it-
Lakmé Eyeconic Curling Mascara – Royal Blue

What they say: Giving your eyes an edgy makeover is one of the hottest new trends seen across international runways, and now it’s your turn to don the trend! This season, liven up your eyes with the deep colour pay-off of the new Lakmé Eyeconic Curling Mascara in Royal Blue.
This new mascara is packed full of color and gives your eyes a vibrant and distinct appearance. The shade is bold, extremely versatile and will glam-up any kind of look, making it a definite makeup must-have.
The Royal Blue shade enhances and also intensifies the colour of your eyes, making them pop. The mascara is equipped with a smart curl brush for easy application and is completely smudge-proof, waterproof and long lasting. Go on, give your eyes an Eyeconic makeover.
First Impressions / Packaging
Mascaras either promise length, volume, curling or a combination of all three. This one, as the name suggests, focusses on the latter. The packaging of this mascara is exactly the same as the regular Lakmé Eyeconic Curling Mascara (black) which has been around for a few years. In fact, if you have the original one it might be difficult to distinguish at first sight, although there is a colour coded sticker at the bottom. I never tried the original one though, as I tend to go for thickening / volumising mascaras most of the time.
My natural lashes with no added product. Please ignore the less than perfect liner application.
The brush is the typical shape that I see on all curling mascaras. My lashes are fairly straight & do benefit from curling, but I am too lazy to use an eyelash curler most of the time. This did give me some ‘lift’, it didn’t really compare to what a curler would do, but obviously better than nothing. You do have to take some time to see that the lashes are properly coated, but the final effect is quite stunning & very visible.
I quite like the effect of this mascara. Like my Inglot one, it doesn’t do much to enhance thickness, but it does lift. The Blue is vibrant & bold, & it shows up pretty well even on naturally dark eyelashes.
On some days when I want very voluminous lashes, I’ll use a very thickening mascara first (I’m currently crushing on the Maybelline Barbie Big Eyes mascara) & layer this on top. However, when layering on a jet black mascara, the blue doesn’t stand out as much.
I’m really happy with this mascara, & if you’re looking for an affordably priced blue mascara in India, I would defintiely recommend it! I secretly hope they release more shades too, like purple! You can buy it online here. x
I like to keep it very simple in the skincare department, & Himalaya Herbals is one of my go to brands. Their products are affordable, made from natural ingredients & most importantly- very effective. I’ve blogged about about their affordable anti acne face pack, & it’s still my favorite Himalaya product. They have great lines for people of all ages, babies & even pets! So when I heard they were coming out with Himalaya FOR MOMS, a body care range for expectant & new mothers, I wanted to check them out (despite not fitting into the category myself).
Himalaya for Moms currently consists of six products – a nipple care butter, toning massage oil, anti rash cream & three different body butters. Let’s dig in, shall we?
Massages have always been a part of traditional body care regimes for new mothers in India. Massage is proven to be effective for faster postpartum recovery and better health as it increases flexibility while also toning muscles. An effective massage can stimulate blood circulation, thus reducing pain and swelling. Massage also helps with improved milk secretion, relieves stress and promotes sound sleep.
The key ingredient is Sesame Oil, infused with Country Mallow, Winter Cherry & Aloe Vera. Sesame Oil has antioxidant properties, it also moisturises & soothes. Country Mallow helps improve muscle & joint strength. Winter Cherry conditioners & soothes the skin and Aloe Vera is has legendary healing properties. This oil is Lavender fragranced (one of my all-time favorite scents to relax & unwind to, along with lemongrass) make it the perfect massage oil for new moms.
Himalaya FOR MOMS Nipple Care Butter
Nipple care is usually done the traditional way. A cloth dipped in warm water is used to wipe away excess milk and saliva. Sometimes, harsh soap is used to clean nipples. Enzymes from baby’s saliva, water or even soap residue can remove moisture from sensitive nipple skin, all contributing to sore & cracked nipples in nursing mothers.
Formulated with kokum butter & virgin coconut oil, the nipple care butter can be used by expecting mothers (to nourish nipples & prepare them for lactation) & nursing mothers, to prevent & soothe sore & cracked nipples. It’s rich & emollient but non greasy, making it the perfect formula to care for your nipples.
Rashes can occur due to sweat, rubbing together of folded skin, or irritation caused by normal skin germs. The deeper the folds are, the more likely the chances of a rash. The most prone areas are between and under the breast, under the stomach, in the arm pits and between the thighs.
The Himalaya FOR MOMS Anti-Rash Cream is an herbal formulation that effectively reduces itching and rashes, and gently soothes the skin. It is very useful in relieving rashes during pregnancy, as well as other dermal cuts and scratches which cause minor itching. The comforting Lavender aroma will not only calm the rash but also distract your mind from the irritation. The key ingredients of this cream include Yashad Bhasma, with aloe vera, almond oil & manjistha.
The range also includes three Soothing Body Butters. Made with cocoa butter & glycerin (both known for intense moisturising & skin softening properties)
The rose fragrance uplifts, jasmine rejuvenates & lavender calms (my personal favorite!) They’re available in 50ml, 100ml & 200ml.
Overall I really liked everything I tried from the new Himalaya FOR MOMS range. Himalaya is such a trusted brand & it’s great that they’re brought out a great skincare line for moms that’s both natural & very affordable (everything is under ₹500!) The range is easily available both in stores & online. x
Moisturising your body is important throughout the year, but it gains a special significance in the colder months, as the lower temperatures & decreased humidity can really steal the moisture out of your skin. The first step in keeping your skin soft & supple is to stay well hydrated, but it’s also important to find a good external moisturiser.
During a bit of research I came across Cocoa Butter as an ingredient & I was amazed at the benefits it offers. So today’s post is going to be all about cocoa butter, & why it’s so good for your skin.
What is Cocoa Butter?
Cocoa butter is a natural vegetable fat (sometimes called theobroma oil) that is extracted from the cacao bean. It’s one of the main ingredients used to make chocolate but has a variety of other uses as well. It is solid at room temperature but melts easily in your mouth or hands & naturally has a long shelf life too, without the use of any artificial preservatives.
Cocoa Butter for Skin
Cocoa butter is a great emollient, it’s thick & rich properties mean that it penetrates deep into the layers of your skin, providing a great source of moisture especially in parts of skin prone to dryness & roughness such as elbows & knees. It’s also known to be especially effective against scars & stretch marks – it may not outright make existing scars or stretch marks disappear, but regular use can firstly prevent them from occurring & can also help them fade over time.
Raw Cocoa Butter isn’t that hard to come across. It’s usually available in chunks & can be used directly on your skin after being warmed up between fingers.
Skincare enriched with the goodness of Cocoa Butter
I know that many people (me included) wouldn’t be so enthusiastic to use raw cocoa butter on a daily basis – the process is more time consuming & while it might be great on a weekend where I have extra time, the best solution for everyday is to choose a lotion enriched with this magical ingredient!
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been using Himalaya Herbals Cocoa Butter Intensive Body Lotion. Himalaya is a brand I trust a lot – their products are natural, affordable & easily available too. The lotion has a light cocoa smell that is intoxicating & the thicker consistency does an excellent job of moisturising skin wonderfully. It keeps skin feeling soft for a longer period, because I hate it when I use a lotion & my skin is dry within a couple of hours. If you’re looking for a body lotion enriched with the magic of cocoa butter, I’d highly recommend this one!
I hope this post helped you know a bit more about the origin & benefits of Cocoa Butter. Have you ever used it? Do share your experience in the comments. x
