Do you feel in your gut that you need to make a change?

Perhaps it’s a change in your personal life, your professional situation, or the organization or business you lead.

And…

Are you taking action?

If not, why?

Why do we hold back, resist, or even stay in denial when we know that a change is needed? This resistance often shows up as “assessing” or “researching,” or “getting our ducks in a row,” but no matter what we call it, it’s still resistance.

Why is it so hard for us to create change, even when we have compelling data and excellent training?

The dynamics of change and transition have many layers, and there’s quite a bit of research on both the organizational and psychological components.

As an interim CEO, transition strategist and leadership coach, I witness first hand how much time and resources are spent to create new plans, new processes, new structures, new technology, and often new relationships.

I see smart, successful leaders staying in place or running in circles.

I watch individuals and organizations hire excellent coaches or consultants to focus on specific leadership skills or marketing, fundraising, operational or financial initiatives.

And yet – no real change or transformation happens.

In my own journey and that of my clients, I’ve found that feeling “stuck” is the result of many complex factors. Perhaps it’s a fear of failure, a lack of clarity on what we really want, or it’s those “voices in our head” telling us that what we want to achieve isn’t actually possible.

Here’s the key…

All we need to get the ball rolling is a shift in mind-set.

While the process of transformation certainly doesn’t happen overnight, here’s 5 Guiding Questions to get things percolating as you think about the change you or your organization want to create.

  1. What are the ways in which you will benefit when the change is successful?
  2. What are the ways in which you will NOT benefit when the change is successful?  Think carefully here. Go deep. Will it mean more work for you? Will you need to be more responsible/accountable? Visible? What emotions do you notice coming up?
  3. What will the positive impact be to others when the change is successful? Why is that important to you? (I really mean important to you.  Not to your organization, community, family.)
  4. Why do you believe this change may not be possible?
  5. Now, find some real evidence to refute each of the barriers you listed in #4.

As you take a moment to think about what may be keeping you from creating the change you envision, I invite you to challenge your own assumptions and push beyond your intellectual and emotional comfort zone.

Look beyond the norm of your industry standards and best practices.

Choose the thoughts that will create more possibilities for your success, and seek out the concrete evidence to support those thoughts so that you believe them, and are inspired to take action.

It’s so important for us as leaders to observe and understand our own motivations, and then reframe our thoughts about change to a focus on others.

Move forward, take a leap, ask for help along the way, and have the impact you are meant to achieve!

To your success,

Kathryn

For those of you in the United States, this weekend will likely include family and friends gathered around BBQ’s, beaches, parades and fireworks!

Summer is here!

This season brings so many opportunities for enjoyment and relaxation, AND can provide:

  • A time to shift from the last big push to end your fiscal year in the black, to embarking on exciting new initiatives.
  • Opportunities to be “firing on all cylinders” for those of you who run summer music festivals or are entrepreneurs running events and launching new products and services.
  • A time for professional transitions as some of you leave organizations in good shape and move to new roles and communities.

This time of year also reminds us that we’re half way through 2018 – and while you’re heating up the grill this weekend, it may be a good time to reflect and take stock of how your professional life integrates with your purpose and personal life.

Here are Five Guiding Questions to Help You Move Forward with Purpose

1.  How are you making a difference in the lives around you? [HINT: you are] Think about the times when you know you’ve “showed up” as your best self. What occurs and to whom?

2.  What excites you? What makes you happy, fulfilled, joyful in your life?  Why? Is it any of your answers to question 1? Be specific!

3.  What are some ways you can do more of that in the second half of 2018?  Look at what’s in your control. Challenge any limiting assumptions about what you think isnot possible.

4.  If you look ahead to New Year’s Eve 2018, what do you want to be celebrating? Choose things that will really make you feel good – I’m not asking about your organization or business, or anyone else’s feelings or expectations! This is 100% about YOU.

5.  What are the embodied actions (thoughts, feelings, language, choices) that you could take over the next 90 days to create the possibility for that end-of-year celebration? Do you need to create time to think strategically? Be well rested? Feel connected? Increase your visibility and personal brand in certain arenas? Who are the people you need around you (or not)?

When you focus on doing what you love, and you know why you love it and how this helps lift up others – directly and indirectly, it can bring a wonderful energy and effectiveness into your current work and relationships. Prioritizing and decision-making becomes effortless, and you are valued for what is important to you.

Here’s an added bonus to doing this work…

When you share your intention to measure your success in terms of impact, momentum can build as people better understand and are inspired by what occurs when you are you – and want to help and be a part of something that matters!

As you look ahead to your next six months of 2018, give yourself a gift this holiday weekend and invest in taking some time to make sure that while you are enjoying “success” you are on the path you (really) want.

I’m here to champion and support your efforts as you commit to curating an integrated life that creates the possibilities for being your best self SO THAT you can help those you are meant to help.  Let me know how you are doing!

Happy Independence Day!

To your success (filled with fun, joy and big impact!),

Kathryn

Just a few days ago, my husband and I returned home after circumnavigating the globe on an incredible, 30-day pilgrimage.

The first of its kind, and led by one of the world’s experts on mindfulness, this trip focused on the power of presence, and creating deep connections to people and places in what seemed like very faraway lands when I first booked the tickets [Turkey, Tanzania, Egypt, Israel, India, China and Tibet].

My fellow travelers and I also created a deeper connection to ourselves as transformational leaders, and I’m sure I will continue to gain additional insight as I process all that I’ve just experienced.

I can’t wait to share these new thoughts with you over the coming weeks and months, and already know that the participants in my next Impact Intensive / Create Your Dream Career (Life!) will benefit from this experience.

But for today as I unpack my suitcase, here are some thoughts as I process things while still at the 10,000 foot view.

I am aware of new thought patterns that make new things – even “crazy” things – now possible.

And why not!?

Three years ago, “I would have never” thought it would be possible to:

  • Have a thriving business in which I only work with clients who make my heart sing!
  • Take 30 days completely away from my business, and still advance and deepen my impact!
  • Put our house up for sale while we were gone! (more on that later)
  • Create a tribe of purposeful leaders who inspire and challenge me on a regular basis, and support each other!
  • Feel a deep sense of belonging in a remote Tibetan village eating Yak meat
  • Connect with the spirits of thousands of women before me, as I tucked my prayers into the Wailing Wall in Israel
  • Be intoxicated by the perfumed fragrance of Varanasi and the Ganges river
  • Share an intimate moment with a woman wearing a burka
  • Laugh with a holy Lama
  • Learn the true joy of helping others from a guide in Tanzania
Think about your life:

What impact are you meant to have?  Are you achieving “it?”  Are you spending time doing things that bring you joy?

If not, what do you think is stopping you?

What assumptions are you taking as fact, that could be challenged and tested?

What new thoughts could you try out to make it all possible?

Are you benefiting by not making changes?  What would occur for you, and those you are meant to help, if you were successful and happy?

You know my premise:

What you do matters, and more importantly:  how you BE matters.

When you are BE-ing your best self, what is your value? To whom?

The world needs you to have the impact you are meant to achieve.  Today.

We need you to know your impact and your purpose, and we need you to build momentum… all SO THAT you can connect with those who you are meant to help, and those who can help you do what you’re meant to do.

We need you to think the new thoughts that will make new things possible!

And, you don’t have to travel around the globe to shift your thought patterns.  By asking yourself some of these questions, you can set your new journey in motion.

To your success (filled with fun, joy and big impact!),

Kathryn

P.S. – As always, I love hearing how you are putting your new ideas into practice, and I thank you for being a part of my journey.   Stay tuned for some exciting new offerings this summer! And if you’re feeling like you’re at a crossroads of some kind, and wanting to have more joy, fun and “success,” let’s get on the phone to see if I can be of help!

How important is it for you to spend time doing things that you LOVE, or have FUN doing?

How much emphasis to you place on bringing JOY to your tasks, projects and other “stuff” on your calendar?

Was it easy to answer these questions? Perhaps at first, but let’s look deeper.

Because I used the words love, fun and joy in these questions – you likely pictured your life overall. Perhaps you imagined images of travel, friends, family or hobbies that you enjoy.

Yet what happens when I invite you to answer those same questions with your work and professional responsibilities in mind?

Did you get a different reaction?

If so, you’re not alone. So many of us have a difficult time attaching words like “love” “fun” or “joy” to our work, even if we genuinely enjoy what we do.

So if you had a similar experience, let’s try these exercises:

  • Think about how you’ve carried out your professional/leadership responsibilities over this past week, and ask yourself how much of your time was spent doing things that you LOVED?
  • Were there moments when you were having FUN?
  • Were there moments of pure JOY?

What did you find?

As you reflect on your answers, I encourage you to notice if your professional situation is in alignment with the overall value you place on joy, fun and love.

Specifically, do you give the same value to joy and love in your work as you do when you think of your vacations, your hobbies, and your loved ones?

Is it in balance?

Is it Enough?

The tricky part is that often we make some assumptions when we’re thinking about what is “realistic” for us to expect from our work.

You’ve probably even heard the phrase: “It’s called work for a reason.”

Here’s some assumptions we often make that may sound familiar:

  • “I can’t only do the parts of my job that I love!  There’s work to be done!”
  • “There are big challenges at work, and people are counting on me/us to figure them out.  This is serious business.”
  • “I won’t look or be viewed as being professional if I’m having fun.”
  • Or even, “I’ll be able to have fun after these big work deadlines are completed.”

I recently coached a wonderful client via my Impact Intensive as she prepares to launch her own consulting business.

She is clear on her unique purpose, the life of joy she wants to curate, the impact she is meant to achieve, and she has created her elevated languaging to help her connect with those needing her expertise.

And yet… when she drafted the list of services she was going to offer, I heard her say:

“Let’s take this one out – it sounds too specific and there probably won’t be that many people who want it or know that they need it.”

So I asked her the following two questions:

  1. Of all the services you want to provide, which one on this list would give you the most joy?
  2. Which one do you believe creates the possibility for your client’s greatest success?

She replied to both questions immediately.  “THAT one.”

I waited in silence for the awareness to sink in.

In what initially seemed like a sound and logical good business decision, she almost removed the one thing that she LOVES doing, that comes effortlessly to her, that creates the possibility for significant impact in organizations and their communities, and that other leaders in her industry don’t have the insight and experience to do!

If we’re not watching and staying self-aware, we can easily deprive ourselves of the joy and enjoyment that our work can bring.

As smart leaders, we generally know our values, yet we often make choices and take actions that completely PREVENT us from being in alignment with those values (and then blame the situation).

We accept that our dream scenarios are not possible.

We wear uniforms of best practices and industry dogmas.

Or not!

If you have subscribed to my blog, you know my premise.  What you do matters (when you do what you do, in that unique way that you do it, when you are fully in alignment with your purpose).

When I see leaders feeling joy and ease, having fun and loving what they are doing, it’s almost always a given that those are the same areas where they have the most value and impact to others.  It’s an indication that they are showing up fully.

Build on that. Leverage that.  Create the causes and conditions in your life so that you can experience it more frequently.

Fun.

Joy.

Loving what you do.

Use them all as litmus tests to ensure you are spending your time in areas where you have the most value.  People are counting on you!

To your success (filled with fun, joy and Big Impact!),

Kathryn

P.S. – I love hearing from you!  How are YOU making sure you are doing what you love?  And if you’re feeling like you’re at a crossroads of some kind, and wanting to have more joy, fun and “success,” let’s get on the phone to see if I can be of help!

Last month my husband and I watched The Greatest Showman.

Then, we watched the incredible video footage from the rehearsal presentations to get the movie greenlit, and gained a completely new perspective on why this film is so powerful.

This first behind the scenes video is from the rehearsal of From Now On.

Hugh Jackman had just had surgery and his doctors told him he couldn’t sing.  In all the rehearsals he had stood in place, gesticulating, etc. to help the cast see where he would be in the scene.

Then, in this song, something magical happens.

We witness the moment when he just cannot not contain himself and he joins in….against doctors’ orders! The cast and chorus –  who was already sounding amazing until this point – completely shifted and up-leveled their performance.

It was as if the molecules in the room changed!

The second behind the scenes video is from the same read-through rehearsal: This is Me.

In the introduction we learn that Keala Settle has been standing behind her music stand for all the rehearsals and would not step out front.  In the video we witness the actor – as well as her character – come out from behind and stand in her full Bigness.

As director Michael Gracey says, “it is one of those moments that will stay with me the rest of my life.”

It’s these tangible moments when the molecules in the air shift and something new is made possible, that are now a key component of my work, and how I’m intentionally curating my business and life.

A few years ago, I realized (or rather, was finally able to articulate) that I seek and yearn for that one moment where a “shift” occurs.

THE moment where the course of a life or an organization is forever changed.

THE moment where the molecules shift.

THE moment when you can feel the chemistry change, and the stars align.

In these moments, and throughout my work, I see possibility.  I see BIG POSSIBILITIES.  I see patterns, and thus I seek to nurture, feed and be a catalyst for breakthroughs, and a champion for my clients’ transformation.

So for you, as a purposeful leader, think of the moments in your life or business where you’ve created or witnessed a big shift in others.

As you think of your strategic trajectory, and the impact you are meant to achieve, do you also yearn for a breakthrough?

There are many factors that must exist to create a “molecule changing” breakthrough like this, and here are five prompts to help you begin today:

  1. Know yourself. Connect to what you really, really want (usually in terms of your desired impact).
  2. What do you believe may be holding you back?
  3. What assumptions are you making? What if… your assumptions are not correct?  What if… the complete opposite is true?
  4. What could be possible if you took a leap into your fear and came out from “behind the music stand into your Bigness”? What could be possible if you embraced the idea of being vulnerable and showed your perfect imperfections…your humanity?
  5. What could be possible if you made decisions based on what brings you joy?

I first recognized my passion to help create transformation serving as a professional Interim Executive Director for arts and culture organizations.  Having led nine organizations through times of change and transition, and now through coaching, it’s exhilarating to experience:

  • Coaching a leader who believed she wasn’t valued, and watch her come to realize that she was the one holding herself back and she could change the dynamic.
  • Creating a space for a board of seasoned financial leaders to be moved to tears; and connect to their organization’s deep purpose and impact.
  • Using momentum as a catalyst to help a self-described “non-fundraising board” to spontaneously raise $20,000 at a Board meeting; AND see them build their confidence and connection to each other in one moment! (those molecules again)
  • Facilitating and guiding stakeholders who considered themselves adversaries to realize that their differences were based upon incorrect information and they could actually help each other be successful!
  • Holding a vision for a strong woman leader to realize that that she can (and must) define success and create the life she wants “even if” industry norms say otherwise.

My heart sings when I am blessed to witness THE moment of a shift.

I invite you to look for and create the possibility for these remarkable, molecule changing moments, too.   And celebrate them!  They are magic.

How are YOU creating the possibilities for Big Shifts – in your organization or for you personally?  And if you’re feeling like you’re at a crossroads of some kind, and wanting to have more value and “success,” let’s get on the phone to see if I can be of help!

This is such an exciting time!

As you think about your business, your non-profit, or yourself as a leader, it’s imperative that you have a strategy to be visible, and create a sense of momentum to maximize your impact and success.

But how?

Think for a minute about this past week.  What organizations or leaders did you observe on social media, in e-blasts, or at a meeting or public gathering of some kind who seem to be really going somewhere?

Who seems to be getting a lot of press/attention/recognition/revenue lately?

More importantly, who made you want to be a part of what they’re doing? Or perhaps even made you think: “wow – I’d like to have some of their success!”?

It can be helpful to reflect on what led you to think all those thoughts. What specifically did you read or hear? How many times? Did they say it, or was it said about them? How did they enroll and engage you?

Success is often much easier to see to see in others than it is in ourselves, and it can be captivating, enticing and inspiring.

Yet on certain days, hearing about others’ success can sometimes make us question our own value, can’t it?

As we see other people truly making an impact, we might have a tendency to diminish our own progress towards our goals. Perhaps we even assume that this kind of visibility is not going to be possible for us without a better network or more resources to hire pr/marketing/branding firms.

Don’t worry!

In almost every case:

YOU can create a shift in the dynamics around your organization or yourself professionally.

YOU can strategically create a “buzz,” invite curiosity, enlist support, encourage acknowledgment, and grow visibility – often without having to spend anything on marketing or branding.

And YOU can begin today.

When I teach and coach my clients how to do this, the results are truly energizing.

You effortlessly begin to differentiate yourself, create your authentic brand, and often increase revenue. You might receive a promotion or secure a dream job, notice more people reaching out to work with you, and feel yourself catapulting forward like never before!

Ready to get started?

Here are 4 actions you can take to begin to position yourself and create momentum SO THAT you can connect to those people who need you, or who you need:

  1. Take Inventory. What do you want to be “known for?” What do you want others to say about you that would be truly meaningful to you and let you know you are having impact and success? Make a list.  Create opportunities to share these unique points. Say what you want to hear.
  2. Observe your day.  What are you doing that is creating the possibility for impact?  What are others doing that helps you? Share these moments of your journey.
  3. Look for examples of the kind of of success and impact that YOU value.  In yourself and in others. Share them.
  4. Repeat Steps 1 – 3 regularly – in social media posts, quotes in the press, woven into your public remarks, in daily meetings, at board meetings – share your impact everywhere!

I’m not suggesting that you do these things to brag, or share them from a place of ego or vanity. The intention here is to always do this as a means to making a difference and helping.

Remember, you are speaking the truth!

You are presencing intention and your impact.  You are creating a subtle, simmering awareness of your values and your value.  You are enrolling, engaging, inspiring and connecting with those you are meant to serve.  You are painting a picture. You are creating a movement!

You are leading.

For now, know my premise:  What you do matters.  Or perhaps more specifically, who you BE matters. There are people in the world right now who need you just as you are, and it’s up to YOU to get your message to those who need it (you/your organization) most!

Please don’t leave it up to others to figure out how you can help them.  Take charge, be excited, and speak your impact!

To your success (in the unique ways that YOU define it),

Kathryn

P.S. – I love hearing from you!  How are YOU speaking your impact?  And if you’re feeling like you’re at a crossroads of some kind, and wanting to have more value and “success,” let’s get on the phone to see if I can be of help!

For the past 28 months I’ve sent out Happy Friday emails with an intention to provide inspiration, help you connect to your impact so that you can enroll and engage those who need you, and provide prompts and information to support you in all aspects of your journey as a purposeful leader.

“What do I want to share with you today?“

When I first started my Happy Friday emails 28 months ago, that question would make me nervous, and would lead to more questions like:

  • What if the content isn’t helpful or relevant?
  • What if I run out of ideas and topics to share and teach?
  • What if people unsubscribe?

I’m happy to report that today, I love thinking about what I want to share with you, and I appreciate that what at first I feared is now the conduit for me to connect with incredible like-minded leaders throughout the world (just this week I spoke with people from the Netherlands and from Russia!)

Originally, I thought I would plan out the year of topics in advance.

I wondered whether I would be “brave” enough to use words like transformation, purpose, intention, joy (and even Happy Friday) in the context of business and leadership practices.

Yet somehow I knew that if I committed to this regular communication, it would be an important part of growing my business, would fuel my personal growth as a solo-preneur, and most importantly create the possibility for me to connect with those to whom I am meant to support.

So…I made a commitment and stuck with it.

And, just like I now help my clients do, I created clarity in intention, clarity around my Why, and I kept taking strategic leaps into vulnerability, which in turn became catalysts for big shifts, and powerful momentum:

  • I began to trust and value that sometimes a “last-minute” inspiration is the best way to share something that is authentically important to me and inspired by my recent conversations, client work, and observations.
  • My confidence grew.
  • I am now clear that when I speak in my voice, I attract those who I am meant to support.
  • Common themes and patterns are revealed through the diverse organizations and leaders I am supporting; which have helped me better serve you – my e-mail community and my clients.
  • I have evidence of where you want support – thank you for your emails, calls and posts!
  • My intention to deliver content that resonates with readers at the exact moment that they need it, has created the authentic work-personal relationships that I could never have imagined!

So let me ask you:

What seemingly small actions can you commit to doing on a regular basis SO THAT you can help others (and create clarity in your purpose, ease, joy… and momentum)?

NOTE: Nerves and resistance are normal and may be indications that you’re thinking more about yourself than others, and/or they may be revealing an area to break through!

Trust your instincts. Trust your process. Believe that what you do, in the unique way you (already) do it, is waiting to be received by those who need you. GO!

To your success,

Kathryn

Over the last 2 weeks, here in San Diego things are blooming, sprouting, breaking through the earth and rising up. It’s Spring!

I know many of you in other parts of the country are still experiencing winter-like weather, but even if that’s the case, do you sense something germinating inside YOU this time of year?

Do you see it?

Can you feel it?

Do you hear it?

Right now you are either thinking I have added “mind reading” to my coaching skill-set, and you’re saying:

  • YES! she knows! I’ve decided to look for a new job!  or I’m launching a new business! or I’m committing to sharing my voice and standing up for what I believe in!

Or there are some of you who are thinking the opposite… You’re not feeling that “spring” inside of you.  You are thinking:

  • No, Kathryn. I’m just doing my job and living my life. Or No, she doesn’t know what I’m facing, I’m unhappy, and I’m stuck.

No matter which camp you’re in, here’s my encouragement for you.

You can start where you are right now, and actively create the important momentum that enrolls and engages others, and keeps you motivated and on track!

All it takes is a choice.

When you (only) choose the embodied actions that support getting what you really want to achieve, and support the impact you really want, you can create that “Spring” inside you!

Once you’ve got the ball moving even just a little bit, then you can nurture, celebrate and SHARE your journey to really ignite that creative fire and purpose within you!

Even if you feel completely stuck, just start.

Do one simple thing that moves you forward today.

One thing, that’s it!

It definitely feels like Spring in my coaching practice, as the extraordinary women leaders of the January cohort of my Create Your Dream Career (Life!) program and the entrepreneurs of March’s 6-day leadership Impact Intensive have been breaking through limiting beliefs, finding and speaking their impact, and creating their new-found momentum in alignment with their purpose.

I’m so proud to watch them manifest new, exciting job opportunities, and reconnect on deeper levels with their contacts. These incredible women have chosen to shed long-time patterns and replace them with those that create possibilities. They’ve found renewed confidence and value through new clarity in purpose – both in their current roles and as they curate their next chapters. They are sharing their joy with each other thanks to the incredible connections they’ve created in these groups.

Here are some questions that may help YOU find and build momentum as we head into the Spring season:

  1. KNOW. Describe what you want to create (a life of meaning, increased income so that I can do “x”, a new job where I’m valued, joy, connection, impact, all of the above!, etc.). I call this your “Point B of Impact” and your “Dream work-life Scenario.”
  2. REVEAL. Looking back over the past months/years, what choices have you made that create the possibility for you to achieve that Point B? (enrolled in a certification program, began exercising, adjusted relationships, talked with an investor, etc.)
  3. IDENTIFY. What did you do/How did you Be today that creates the possibility for you to achieve that Point B? (what language, feelings, thoughts and actions did you choose? Note: even the “smallest” of actions can have significance.)
  4. PROCLAIM. Say what you want (#1) out loud! and why. Say what you’ve done to get here (#2). Celebrate the actions you’re taking today (#3).
  5. WATCH THE MOMENTUM BUILD as you continue to choose to notice and presence your choices!

When you truly know the impact you have on those around you when you show up fully as your best self, and when you know why that matters so much to you and to others, big things begin to happen.

When you are clear on what you (really) want, you create the possibility for transformation, and make it possible for extraordinary things to happen “effortlessly” and “all of a sudden” “out of the blue”!!!

When you know how to articulate your impact using elevated language that connects with those you are meant to serve, you change lives and make the world a better place!

Take a moment to listen to what’s growing inside you. Nurture it. And commit to helping it (and you) fully blossom!

To your success,

Kathryn
