If you’re looking for a plant that will not only thrive but also really make your garden pop – succulents are definitely for you. Big on beauty but low on maintenance, succulents are ideally suited for the San Diego climate.

In this issue, the professional San Diego landscape designers with Juniper Landscape will talk more about succulents – including their benefits, how to take care of them and tips for how to use them most effectively in your garden.

As always, we’re happy to visit your home or business and provide an individualized landscaping plan. Just get in touch with us by calling (619) 334-9464 or sending an .

What are succulents?

Even though they’re rapidly growing in popularity, many folks remain unaware of succulents. These plants are known primarily for their amazing ability to store water in their leaves, causing them to appear fleshy and thick.

This ability to conserve water enables succulents to thrive in dry climates.

Are succulents hard to grow?

Another remarkable trait of succulents is their ability to multiply easily. In fact, some will spark new plants from fallen leaves while others will grow entirely new plants along their stems or on leaf tips.

You can plant succulents both inside and outside your home or business. If you’re keeping them inside, be sure that you:

  • Place them in an area where they can get plenty of light (be careful, though, with newly planted succulents; they can burn badly when in direct sunlight, so it’s best to introduce them gradually to full exposure)
  • Rotate them often so that growth is not limited to just one side
  • Water them when it’s right (during their growing times, succulents will need more water than normal; a good rule is that it’s time to add water if the top 1.25 inches of your succulent plant container is dry)
  • Choose a container with drainage holes so that rot can be prevented
How should I use succulents in my garden?

Succulents provide you with a variety of gardening ideas. The important thing to keep in mind is to plant your succulents in soil that drains well. If the garden in your soil is compacted, you may want to add a bit of organic material – i.e. compost – so that the soil will drain better.

While succulents generally do not mind being close to one another, it’s best to follow the spacing recommendations on the labels for your individual plants.

  • A desert setting is ideal for succulents, so if you already have rocks or boulders in your yard, you can plan your succulent garden around them.
  • Adding a basic walkway through your garden will give you and your guest the ability to examine your plants up close.
  • Add slopes and ledges to your succulent garden. If your garden area does not have different elevations, you can imitate nature by moving dirt around.
For personalized ideas and help with a succulent garden in San Diego, call Juniper Landscape Company.

As you can see, we’re big fans of succulents. Their brilliant color and low-maintenance requirements make them a winning choice for just about anyone.

Why does my yard need a focal point?

With the use of a focal point, you are guiding the perspective of a viewer to a particular location of your choosing.

For example, you can use a plant, object or container to smoothly direct attention either to an area of your yard you’d like to showcase or away from items you’d like to hide.

The main reasons for a focal point are to (1) direct the viewer’s attention and (2) provide your yard with a sense of order.

What can I use for a focal point?

The choices for focal points are literally limited to only your imagination.

We’ve talked before about obvious choices, such as gardens, pergolas, and fire and water features. Other good ideas are decks and patios, sheds, outdoor kitchens, or a refurbished piece of furniture.

For personalized ideas and help with your garden and yard, call Juniper Landscape Company.

Is my yard is too small for a garden?

Quite a few steps will make your seemingly small yard the perfect space for an outdoor garden.

  • A built-in corner seating area can keep the garden area from feeling too crowded.
  • Divide uneven sections of the yard so that the garden has a layered effect, which can make it seem larger.
  • For entertaining, be sure to keep furniture and potted plants along the sides of the garden so there’s more room for your guests to mingle.
  • Incorporate a living wall (one that is partially or completely covered in greenery) to add a touch of lushness to your garden.
  • Even if your garden area is small, abundant pathways and oversized gathering spaces can prove to be inviting.

Even though most business owners put a great deal of effort and expense into producing positive experiences for their customers, many fail to realize the importance of a regularly maintained parking lot. In fact, cleanliness and the first impression aspect of a parking lot are key factors in determining where people will shop or conduct business.

In this issue, the San Diego landscape experts with Juniper Landscape Company will talk more about the importance of keeping a business parking lot clean.

Why Parking Lot Maintenance is Vital for Your Business’s Success
  1. It increases your curb appeal.
When a parking lot is maintained and landscaped, the overall perception of the business is that it’s managed better and that its personnel are more in-tuned with customer service. In other words, a clean parking lot makes a fantastic first impression among potential customers.
  2. The lifespan of the parking lot surface will be extended.
When dirt and debris are allowed to accumulate on a driveway or parking lot, water from storms cannot properly drain away, and the strength of the parking lot asphalt can be compromised. A consistently cleaned parking lot will prevent the buildup of debris and toxins – which greatly improves the integrity and longevity of your parking lot’s surface.
  3. Clean parking lots can protect you from legal consequences.
Debris buildup in your business parking lot can lead to vehicles skidding and causing accidents. This, in turn, can leave you legally responsible for anyone hurt on your premises. A regularly cleaned and maintained parking lot simply makes good business sense.
  4. Regular cleaning prevents pests and rodents from invading your parking lot.
When garbage and other debris build up in your business parking lot, you can rest assured that rodents and other pests will soon move in as well. This leads to, among other things, unhealthy environments, a continuing infestation problem, and a reduction in your customer base.
To schedule expert and dependable parking lot cleaning services in San Diego, call the Juniper Landscape Company.

Again, it simply makes good business sense to leverage the expertise and reliability of a landscape provider to deliver consistent parking lot cleaning for your establishment.

For more information about how our expert team can work with you, call Juniper Landscape Company at 619-334-9464 or you can reach us via .

The notion of a living roof – or green roof – really took off in the U.S. in 2008 with the opening of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Planted on a roof of the four-story building were wildflowers and native plants.

Since then, the idea of green roofs has really caught on. In 2016, for example, San Francisco required new buildings 10 stories high or higher to cover 15-30 percent of its roof with either solar panels, vegetation, or a combination of the two.

In this issue, the San Diego landscape designers with Juniper Landscape will talk more about green roofs and their numerous benefits.

If you’d like to speak one-on-one with a Juniper professional, just call us at (619) 334-9464. You can also reach us via .

What is a green roof?

While they’ve been popular in Europe for quite some time, green roofs are now steadily growing in popularity here in the states.

Simply put, green roofs are those partially covered by vegetation. Underneath the vegetation growth is a complex system of waterproofing and other protections for the building underneath.

What are the benefits of a green roof?

There is a host of benefits from a green roof, including:

  • Lessening the urban heat
  • Lowering the costs of heating and cooling a building, since the vegetation provides a natural insulation
  • Prevention of stormwater runoff
  • Increased habitation of pollinators and birds
  • Cleansing the air
To talk more about green roofs and other landscaping ideas, call Juniper Landscape Company.

With spring upon us, many homeowners are anxious to get into their yards, lay out a few plants, and get busy with their gardens.

There’s much more involved, however, than simply randomly installing a few plants here and there to get the most of your plant’s foliage, flowers, and fragrance…and your hard work.

In this issue, the professional San Diego landscape designers with Juniper Landscape will share a few secrets of the trade so that you can get the most out of your plants.

If you’d like us to look at your yard and put together a plan that will definitely make your yard stand out from the others, we’d love to speak with you.  Just get in touch with us by calling (619) 334-9464 or sending an .

What should I consider when selecting plants for my yard?

The design of your planting is just as important as the plants themselves. Unfortunately, design or layout is often overlooked by many DIY-ers.

  • Size matters.
For example, if you want to place your plants in a row at the edge of a walkway, it’s best to use low-growing plants in the front row. Ideally, these plants should be low maintenance, but still, look full.
  • Think about how the color will appear.
For the most part, the color of a plant’s foliage will depend greatly upon the intensity of the sun and the time of the year. For example, spring is synonymous with pink and yellow, while reds and golds become more popular in the late summer as the sunlight strengthens.
  • Don’t forget your nose.
Fragrant plants need to be placed close to the house. That way, you, your family, and your guests are sure to smell them when entering the home.
  • Invite the pollinators.
As we admire their beauty, it’s easy to forget that gardens are intricate ecosystems. The key to their thriving is the work of pollinators, like butterflies, birds, and bees. These creatures are very important to the survival of your garden and those nearby, so select plants that will attract them.
For personalized ideas and help with your garden and yard, call Juniper Landscape Company.

If you’d like to talk about which plants will most benefit your individual landscape, just give us a call. We’ll guide you through the entire process.

One of the most effective – and fun – ways to turn your backyard into an attention magnet and make an enormously positive environmental impact is to establish a butterfly garden.

With just a few easy steps, your family and guests will enjoy the hypnotic effect of studying the butterflies and the plants that attract them.

In this issue, the San Diego landscaping professionals Juniper Landscape will explain the abundant benefits of butterfly gardens, and the essential necessities to establish one in your yard.

What are the benefits of butterfly gardens?

As they travel from one flower to another, butterflies provide an essential component to pollination, which in turn helps the development of the plant species.

Because butterflies prefer native plants, creating a butterfly garden is the epitome of sustainable landscaping. Because they’re native to the Southern California climate, the native plants in your butterfly garden will need fewer resources and maintenance.

Also, the combination of the colorful flowers and the butterflies themselves often stimulate a sense of environmental awareness and the importance of preserving habitats focused on nature.

Which plants are best suited for butterfly gardens?

Bright colors are essential in attracting butterflies to your garden, so the more color, the easier it will be for them to find your garden. It’s also important, though, to select plants that will provide the butterflies with nectar after they land.

Here are a few California native plants that are known to attract butterflies:

  • Coyote Mint
A perennial herb known for its fragrance, this plant produces bright lavender or pink flowers
  • Snowdrop Bush
A deciduous shrub growing to about 6-feet with white flowers and citrus fruit
  • Sticky Bush Monkeyflower
A perennial with orange flowers, these plants typically grow to 3-4-feet.
  • Sulfur Flower Buckwheat
With stunning yellow flowers and gray foliage, these flowers typically grow to 3-feet
How often will butterflies be attracted to your garden?

Even though most butterflies live for about 10-20 days, different species are active at various times throughout the year.

What else do I need for a butterfly garden?

Because they’re cold-blooded insects, butterflies need plenty of sun in your garden. A good idea is to be sure your plants are in spots that will receive lots of sun in the early parts of the day.

It’s also a good idea to include plenty of hardscaping (rock, gravel, or brick) for butterflies to rest and warm themselves.

For help with starting your butterfly garden in San Diego, call Juniper Landscape Company.

We love helping others to connect with nature, and our gardening experts can help you with designing your butterfly garden and selecting the best plants for it.

Juniper Landscape by San Diego Landscaper - 2M ago

Roughly two years ago, Juniper Landscape Company began helping San Diego residents with the installation of Modpools. The parent Modpools company, located in Canada, billed the refurbished shipping containers as capable of holding 4,800+ gallons of water while serving as small swimming pools.

We have recently decided to discontinue our affiliation with Modpools after first-hand negative experiences with the product.

The 8’ x 20’ model was purchased and delivered in late 2017. Here is a summary of our Modpools experience.

[See image gallery at www.juniperlandscape.com]
  • Damaged paint that causes rust.
The pool was shipped from Canada and arrived with paint damage across much of the exterior of the pool. Modpools and their shipping company caused the damage as forklifts impaired the paint on the sides and bottom. Simply put, damaged paint causes rust. The damage included scratched and gouges, which can be penetrated by water – causing rust to develop. Modpools advice to us was to use a box of spray paint to touch up the issues; however, the finish will never match, fix the root problem of rust or look the same.
  • Leaky seals. The seal around the window leaks and the bolts attaching the window to the pool are rusting and leaking. We have since learned that they use acrylic for the window, which does not hold up well with pool chemicals.
  • Extensive rusting, and a failed DIY-repair approach.

We have seen rust all over the interior and exterior of the Modpool, which is a huge concern when considering water safety and longevity. Modpools attempted to correct this issue with a short-lived silicon patch. The rust, however, persists and is increasing. Even with a five-year warranty on the liner its

elf, we were advised by Modpools to “fix it ourselves with epoxy.”

  • A divider wall that is coming apart; dangerous use of plastic.
The leaking problem extends to connection points meant to hold the divider wall in place.

The divider wall itself began coming apart and cracking – less than one year after installation. This is caused by the plastic being too thin and the screws being placed too close to the edge. We have since learned that the plastic they use has BPA (an industrial chemical) that could contaminate the pool water and be potentially hazardous to swimmers.

  • Incorrect dimensions, a demolished wall that had just been installed, and an expensive crane operator.
The overall dimensions and engineering specs were not accurate, which caused massive issues during installation, including using a sledgehammer to remove sections of wall – one that had just been installed – and paying a $600-an-hour crane operator to simply sit and wait until the newly installed wall had been demolished. The cargo doors and equipment room leaks, rusts, doesn’t drain properly, and all the equipment settings and details Modpools provided were incorrect. The window still doesn’t line up with our design due to Modpools misinformation and erroneous placement of the wall. Modpools has done nothing to correct this problem. In fact, we had to pay a professional pool company to remedy the issues.
  • Poor customer service and threats of legal action.
As for their customer service, Modpools’ is poor. We wanted the 10+ major issues to be fixed prior to paying for the pool in full and Modpools had their attorneys threaten to sue us when we refused to pay the balance. We were sent letters from their lawyer threatening us with a lawsuit in Canada unless we paid in full prior to the issues being fixed and with the promise they would warranty and fix the issues. This has been going on for a full year now, and nothing is fixed or resolved. All attempts at a resolution have been met with long delays, unreturned phone calls, and ignored texts or emails. In the end, their strategy seems to be to threaten and sue customers that have issues. Modpools accidentally sent us a letter of intent to sue a totally different customer that was having the same issues. As for our warranty, we have been passed from one person to the next over the last year, as Modpools continually fire employees – forcing us to start the process all over again. We wanted to return the pool from the very first day. Modpools threatened that if we did not take the pool, they would sue us, and we would be responsible for all tariffs, the return transit costs, and any NAFTA penalties.
  • The bottom line: Modpools not ready for the marketplace
We think pools should not leak. This is a big problem and Modpools has not been willing or able to fix it or warranty it, and will not respond to exchanging it, replacing it or refunding our money. In our opinion, the Modpools is not ready for the market, and the company owners and employees do not seem to have the knowledge or inclination to fix the issues or warranty the product.

For example, the company owner always advised us to place chlorine tabs directly in the skimmer and keep one there as part of the setup and on-going maintenance of the pool. This is one of the worst things you could possibly do to your equipment according to the numerous pool companies we have consulted with.

In the end, we strongly do not recommend purchasing a Modpools product. The owner and his wife do not seem to care about their customers or product and it shows in all the interactions with them and their employees.

Nothing has been fixed and we are left with a very expensive rusting and leaking metal box. They are very aggressive and unhelpful, have no empathy, and DO NOT stand behind their product at all.

To illustrate that our Modpools experience is not unique, we encourage you to read these similar reviews and complaints.

Each year, the National Association of Landscape Professionals produces a report outlining expected outdoor design trends. According to their 2019 predictions, gardens should maintain a starring role.

In this issue, the San Diego landscaping professionals with Juniper Landscape Company will share the gardening trends for 2019 they’ve already noticed for the Southern California area.

Top Gardening Trends for 2019
  1. Gardens with fruit and vegetable plants.
Whether its berry bushes, fruit trees, or true vegetable gardens, the popularity of edible landscapes continues to rise. In addition to providing the can’t-beat flavor of homegrown foods, vegetable, and fruit-bearing plants also help you save money on groceries, expose your family to nature, and help protect the environment.
  2. Climate-friendly plants.
In a previous issue, we spoke about the value of featuring native plants in your landscaping. This is especially true of plants intended for your garden. The key is selecting the right plants for your garden’s condition, and ones that can more readily “fend for themselves” rather than being pampered with irrigation systems.
  3. Less work required.
If there’s no rhyme or reason to your garden’s design, you’ll likely get more stress and mess from your efforts. To make your workload more manageable while maximizing your enjoyment time, be proactive with your organization. If you have trees, shrubs, or bushes that provide you with nothing by a mess to clean up, go ahead and have them removed.
