2018 is in full swing, and there’s no better time to adopt some of the trends in interior design and decor than now. Among all the elements of interior design that play key roles in the look and feel of a home are the colours used. 2017 may have been all about warm neutrals and tropical greens, but 2018 is pegged to be a year chock full of edgier tones.
Here are some of the interior design colour trends of 2018.
Ice Cream Colours
The spring time is the best time to start infusing your home with the colours you’ll see at the ice cream parlour. From pastel pinks, to pale yellows, to minty greens, any colour you can think of on your ice cream cone can be used this year in interior design while still being right on point.
Think of your favorite ice cream flavor to help give you some inspiration about where to take your interior’s colour. Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one ice cream colour if you’re so bold. With the help of a skilled interior designer, you can skillfully infuse a few colours into your space without being too gaudy.
There’s nothing subtle or demure about this vibrant shade of blue, and it is the perfect colour to make a bold statement in your home. Whether you use it as wall colour or on your sofa upholstery, turquoise can make any room stand out, in a good way.
Blue seems to be a staple on this list, and this time we’re talking about inky-toned indigo blue. You can go as bold as painting your entire room in this colour, or else simply accessorize it if you’d rather create a more subtle yet interesting space.
While not necessarily a “colour,” ombre is a popular method of infusing colour into a space, and it’s not just limited to hairstyles. When done right, ombre on walls can give you something a little different aside from traditional solid colours or wallpaper. Just be sure to take the time to pick the right coordinating colours and blend them together to achieve the optimal effect.
Metallics were a huge trend last year, but 2018 is more focused on gold. It’s softer than silver yet still packs a good punch to bring an element of excitement and elegance to an interior. This year, you’ll be seeing a lot more gold on things like door knobs, handles, picture frames, and lamp bases. You can easily use gold accessories to create a sophisticated yet understated effect in your home.

Every year, Pantone announces it’s “Colour of the Year” to help inspire designers with their interiors, as well as their fashion! This year, the colour chosen is something that is reminiscent of fantasy worlds and galaxies far away.
Without further ado, the 2018 Pannone Colour of the Year is . . . Ultra Violet!
This shade is a combination of psychedelic purple and electric blue, though it is officially described as a purple shade. Ultra Violet is being increasingly used in spaces to create just enough drama and flair and evoke a sense of originality and uniqueness.
As the name hints, Ultra Violet conjures up thoughts and feelings of the mysteries of far-away skies and galaxies. It also evokes wonderments of what may be lying ahead. The endless night sky symbolizes the unknown possibilities, offering up inspirations and desires to seek out something we don’t yet know is out there.
This colour is full of depth and symbolizes non-conformity, enticing people to push the envelope, both in their personal lives and with their interior design!
How to Incorporate Ultra Violet Into Your Home’s Design and Decor
At Hope Designs, we fully embrace Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year. If used correctly and with a bit of finesse, it can be quite striking. However, because it’s such a bold colour, we suggest using it sparingly for things such as an accent wall in a bedroom or a dining room.
Other possibilities might be to use Ultra Violet tones as accent colours in commissioned artwork, throw pillows, painted furniture such as small accent tables, or lifelike silk floral arrangements. Ultra Violet is also a colour that would work exceptionally well in any garden as it mimics many perennial and annual plantings. You may even want to consider painting a garden bench this colour, or an old watering can. The list literally goes on and on.
If you’re the bold type, you might want to try adding Ultra Violet to larger surfaces, including an accent wall or area rug. That said, you may find that using it in smaller, more subdued ways can work better, especially with a hue that’s so far out there and vibrant as this one.
As a professional designer, our advice is to have fun with Ultra Violet. It’s really not a colour to be taken too seriously – but that is half the fun!

Every year comes with a new set of interior design trends that bring out the best in interior spaces. While some are uber trendy and tend to fade rather quickly, others are able to last longer than their 15 minutes and stick around for an extra year or two. Regardless, furniture trends are meant to give homeowners some design inspiration when furnishing their homes, and the following hot furniture trends of 2018 are sure to tickle your fancy.
While esthetics are certainly essential in the world of interior design, they don’t necessarily trump comfort. That’s where curvier furniture pieces come into the picture. In 2018, pieces that feature more rounded lines are becoming increasingly popular and will continue to get hotter as the months go by. Sofas are being designed with curvature for more comfort and restoration.
Lighter-coloured woods, such as beech and the like, are still quite popular this year. But darker, richer woods are superseding them in 2018. This year, you’ll be seeing a lot more deep-coloured tones on wood furniture that add a level of sophistication and depth. Think mahogany, walnut, and teak, which are classic darker-coloured woods that can easily bring out the elegance and opulence of any space. They pair especially well with warmer colour palettes, like sienna and terracotta.
Yes, velvet is a huge textile in upholstery in the world of interior design, and this luxurious fabric is being infused with all sorts of colours, form the more subdued to the rich jewel tones. Even classic chairs are being covered in bright-coloured velvet, making these the perfect accent pieces to bring out the best in a space.
The floral pattern has already recently made a splash on the interior design scene, and you can be expecting a lot more of it in 2018. Florals are a big thing in sofas and chairs, especially when accompanied by bolder hues, like yellow and green.

Bathrooms might be small in size, but they’re big on style. In fact, bathrooms play a key role in the overall value of a home, so their design and decor should never be underestimated. If you’re thinking of revamping your bathroom in the near future, consider any one of the following hot bathroom trends for 2018 to gain some inspiration.
Under Counter Appliances
An increasing amount of technology is being used in bathrooms, meaning more small appliances are being implemented into this space. It’s not uncommon to see warming drawers for linens and robes, wireless music systems, televisions, and even refrigerators to store makeup and medications in bathrooms. While the kitchen may have been the room with all the appliances, the bathroom is rivalling it.
Different Tile Shapes
More and more interior designers are incorporating a mix of different tile shapes in the bathroom, whether on the floors or walls. Color blocked tiles may already be one of the more popular bathroom trends, but mixing up tiles in the same color family is a subtler way to capitalize on this trend. It can add visual interest without being too busy.
Tile might be the conventional flooring material in bathrooms, but bamboo is making a splash on the scene. They’re durable, sustainable, and super pretty to look at. Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of it on bathroom floors this year.
Stone Vessel Sinks
Vessel sinks are nothing new in bathroom trends, but 2018 is seeing a lot more hand-carved stone vessel sinks. Hand-carved stone gives a sink a much more unique look with a fabulous organic element to it.
Metal Frame Shower Doors and Walls
Interior designers expect to see metal-framed showers make a big statement in 2018. While this trend has been steadily growing over the recent past, this year it is expected to really pop in the bathroom.
Mid-century modern style is making a comeback in bathrooms thanks to the emergence of millwork in this space. The natural tones of millwork can help add an element of warmth and comfort that you can’t get from traditional stone and tile.
If you’re looking to give your bathroom an overhaul, call the professionals at Hope Designs to help!
Kitchens are not just a functional space where you prep and cook all of your meals. Instead, they’ve become crucial hubs of homes where people gather to entertain and just be together. They’ve become spaces where that both spark the urge to whip up a gourmet dish, but also a room that inspires gorgeous design.
Here are some kitchen trends that have already started to make it big in 2018, and will continue to do so throughout the year.
Granite continues to be a mainstay in the world of kitchen design, but the colours that are being chosen tend to be on the darker side in 2018. With the right grain and colour combination, dark counters can provide a striking feature in a kitchen space while still being highly functional and easy to maintain.
Herringbone Floor Patterns
Hardwood flooring in kitchens has made a huge splash in this space over recent years, but homeowners aren’t simply laying the planks in traditional patterns. These days, you’ll be seeing alot more herringbone floors in kitchen spaces, which offer a refined European ambiance to a kitchen.
Out-of-Sight Vent Hoods
Every stove top needs a vent for obvious reasons, but that doesn’t mean they have to be in plain sight. While vent hoods have often been a statement piece in a kitchen, they’re increasingly being tucked away from view.
Islands With Open Displays
Today’s kitchen island is being increasingly used to put a choice few items on display. Islands are now featuring open shelving that can be used to put any of your prized possessions on display for the world to see rather than using island storage to tuck everything out of sight.
Vintage Area Rugs
Adding a vintage rug to a kitchen can soften this space, which is typically made up of more rigid stone and wood materials that usually give off a harsher feel. Antique rugs can provide a soft texture to the space and offer the ideal way to add some color and pattern.
White cabinets are still all the rage in kitchens, but other colours are paving the way in 2018, including green. In fact, green is quickly becoming the colour of choice when it comes to kitchen cabinets. The best part of the shade of green is its ability to reconnect with nature and add warmth to the space.

BlogTO recently Featured Article “Condo of the Week” staged by Hope Designs Hope Designs Toronto’s Award Winning Home Staging Company. Lori Howard and her team at Hope Designs are well-known for staging properties to appeal to the masses, and their project at 11 Charlotte St. is no different.
Sure, this particular condo already has a lot going for it. It’s got a walkability score of 100, which means just about every amenity and source of entertainment you can think of can be quickly and easily accessed by a short stroll. It’s got floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping city views. There’s ample space in the living area and kitchen. Truly, this condo already comes with a great foundation.
But in a market that’s saturated with amazing condos and hungry buyers, it’s well worth it to take the steps to present properties in the best light possible to attract prospective buyers in the area. And Hope Designs was the firm chosen to professionally stage this particular condo to achieve desirable results.
The industrial style of this condo – thanks to features like the unfinished concrete ceiling – is somewhat of a mainstay these days given its popularity among young and modern buyers. But even those who aren’t necessarily fond of this type of look will certainly be able to get over it thanks to the spacious kitchen, large balcony with incredible views, and amazing location.
Hope Designs managed to update this condo with contemporary furnishings, cowhide area rugs, wrought iron end tables, and modern wall art. Perhaps the biggest challenge the design firm faced was decorating and designing the master bedrooom, which is rather miniscule in size.
Lori and her team outfitted the space with an appropriately-sized bed to make sure the room didn’t seem overcrowded, which can make a room appear smaller than it actually is. By using furniture and accessories that complemented the room’s square footage, the team was able to make the space more attractive and visually larger in size.
The end result of the staging project was a success, helping the owners of this 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom condo eventually sell for a whopping $969,000. Almost a million bucks for a condo is nothing to sneeze at, even if it is located in the heart of the city.
The project was so successful and noteworthy that the folks at BlogTO.com featured the story on their highly-viewed website! It’s just another notch on Hope Designs’ list of accolades.
Once again, Hope Design has used their experience and skill-set to create a condo space that commanded a hefty sale price.
When an oversized downtown condo is transformed to blend the feel of a family retreat with the sophistication of an urban dwelling, people take notice. And this time, it was TorontoLife magazine who paid particular attention to a King West condo staged for the market.
Lori Howard and her team at Hope Designs put their magic touch on this 1,425-square-foot condo located in the downtown Toronto core at King and Tecumseth. At this size, the unit isn’t exactly a tiny condo that is typical of downtown city centers. In fact, this unit has plenty of space that rivals some detached properties.
But because the three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit with 360-degree balconies features a size and layout that isn’t exactly the norm in the city, Lori and her team had their work cut out for them. Since the condo is family-sized and located in a part of the city that mostly sees young professionals in much smaller spaces, Lori’s job was to make the unit attract both couples and families with kids.
That’s a tall order since the features of each tend to be vastly different. Blending the two to be able to attract both sets of buyers were not going to be easy. But with Lori’s experience and track record of successful staging stories, she was certainly the best stager for the job.
Lori admits that this was a tough project, since “most spaces are cut and dry.” Her task in this particular project was to create a stylish and sophisticated look without compromising the warmth that is typical of a family home.
To create a space that would attract both sets of buyers, Lori and her team at Hope Designs filled the dining room with larger pieces to showcase the spaciousness of the area. An in-trend live-edge table with chrome legs brought the space to life. In the living room, white leather chairs were coupled with a cowhide rug, along with a glass-topped coffee table. To create a cozy look, Lori plumped up the sofa with a slew of throw pillows.
While the main living space was quite large in this home, the master bedroom was small in comparison. To offset this, Lori worked to make the room look as opulent as possible. The king-sized bed that was already there overpowered the space, making it look smaller than it was. Lori swapped the bed for a queen-sized mattress to free up some floor space and topped it with king-sized bedsheets and pillows.
In the second bedroom, Lori chose to equip the space with a single twin bed to highlight the room’s size. Such a tactic also lets buyers see that the space can be multi-functional and serve as an office or den in addition to a bedroom.

And with her mounting accolades and recognition, it’s clear that Lori’s switch in careers all those years ago was the right move to make.
Millennials are making up the largest generation of homebuyers these days, but what are they looking for in terms of interior design?
Here are some top trends that Generation Yers are looking for in their home’s decor in 2018.
Millennials still love their modern, sleek interiors, but they’re also drawn to the rustic look as well. Interior designers are increasingly coming up with savvy ways to blend both looks into one seamless interior.
One feature that plays into the rustic look is barn doors, which seem to be an increasingly popular feature in millennial homes that are being remodelled. Their actual design and functionality vary, from sliding doors, to those that open entirely, to more subtle pantry or closet doors.
Farmhouse sinks are also quite popular among the Generation Y demographic, as are rustic wood counters and shelves in unique shapes and textures. Reclaimed wood is also being used in components such as fireplace mantles. But such features are being incorporated with more modern finishes – such as metal – to create a look that’s both old and new.
To keep things on the more modern end of the spectrum, millennials want coloured lights in many aspects of their interiors. LED lights in various hues are being found in kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, and fireplaces.
More specifically, they’re being installed in shower stalls, under-cabinet lighting, inside kitchen cabinets, and even along stairs. Such coloured lights can give a space a unique look by changing things up with the simple click of a button on a smartphone or tablet.
Colour in the Kitchen
Millennials still love their white kitchens, but more and more are throwing in a pop of bright colour to add some visual interest. One of the more popular ways to add colour to a kitchen is to install darker cabinets with lighter countertops. And the actual colours themselves include anything from blue, to green, to bright yellow.
Even the appliances are playing a role in this vibrant colour scheme, with an increasing number of kitchens featuring appliances in bright hues.
Handmade items give homeowners an easy way to fully customize their spaces, which is a huge appeal for millennials. Incorporating a unique, one-of-a-kind piece into an interior can take any dull room and make it fabulous.
Whether it’s a vase, bowl, wall art, sculpture, or any other type of decor, these unique items are a great way to transform a space in a cost-efficient manner.
It should come as no surprise that millennials love their smart technology, and that includes the type that operates their homes. Millennials are constantly looking for better ways to maintain their homes, and state-of-the-art technology is helping them do just that.
These days, millennial homeowners can lock their doors, turn their alarm systems on and off, control the temperature, and turn bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans on and off, all from their phones and tablets.
Millennials tend to be very eco-friendly and conscious about the health of the planet, and they are doing their part by ensuring their homes are energy-efficient. One of the more popular ways they’re doing this is by using sustainable and natural materials whenever possible. Engineered stone or recycled materials like quartz and Caesarstone are eco-friendly and are used on counters everywhere. They’re easy to maintain and visually appealing, which are important aspects for millennials.
Smart Storage Solutions
All generations can appreciate a home that offers lots of smart storage, regardless of size. Having an abundance of storage is an important home feature for the millennial generation.
Kitchen designs now come with entire built-in organization systems. Cupboards lower down to counter height to make it easier to reach things. Automated shelving and stacked drawers which slide back to allow a second layer to come out are innovative features that millennials are attracted to, especially for those with smaller living spaces.
Top Interior Design Trends Millennials Want Can Be Yours Too
No matter what generation you hail from, you can still tap into these savvy interior design trends millennials are increasingly incorporating into their homes. With Hope Designs, we can help transform your home into a modern and convenient space that you can be proud to call yours. Call us today and book your consultation!
It’s been proven over and over again that professional home staging is an effective way to help homeowners sell faster and for more money compared to homes that have not been staged. Well, there is! Recently, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) conducted a survey on over 53,000 realtors to get a grasp of precisely how home staging is perceived and received, and the answers are pretty interesting.
