Meet Kai the Mermaid. My newest pattern now available from Etsy and LoveCrochet.

Kai is a friendly little mermaid who loves exploring the deep sea, always fascinated by mysterious marine life. Me too! I find the deep sea very fascinating and would love to be able to explore it one day. Although I’m not a mermaid

I originally designed her to have long flowing hair but because she’s small, the long hair will only result in her head being heavy, which will make her head flop about quite a bit. I opted for the hair cap look with pig tails. It makes her look rather cute I think

Pattern is beginner friendly and is now available from Etsy and LoveCrochet. As always, I love seeing all your makes from my patterns – post a picture of your finished Kai the Mermaid on Instagram with #helloyellowyarn (or you can tag me @maryjcarlos) or post on my Facebook page.

Happy crocheting!

MJ

It’s that time of year again when Amigurumipatterns hold their annual design contest.  This year’s theme is Prehistoric times.  As always, what a fantastic theme! Over 500 designs were submitted and now it’s time to cast your votes!

My entry this year is Iggy the Baby Iguanodon. I had so much fun designing this cute baby dinosaur with the help of my hubby!

Iggy is quite afraid of the big dinosaurs. They’re loud and they stomp a lot! He finds comfort in his egg-shell, even though he’s well and truly grown out of it. Little does he know he will grow up to be a big and strong and dinosaur!

If you like Iggy the Baby Iguanodon, it would mean so much to me if he gets your vote! Click here to cast your votes. Make sure you:

  • Click the heart-button on 10 of your favourite designs (don’t forget to vote for Iggy!).
  • Enter your name and email address on the pop-up screen to submit your vote.
  • You will receive an email to confirm your vote.

Voting ends on 1st December 2018.

Thank you so much for your support!

Hi everyone! We are in our last month of winter here and it is still very cold, especially in the mornings. Not only was it cold today, it was very windy. I quite love winter but I’m actually looking forward to spring these days, just for a small hint of warmth. Although spring here usually means magpie swooping season and I’m not particularly looking forward to that!

I’m so very happy to introduce you to two new members of the Hello Yellow Yarn design collection – Mama Jill and Little Joey! Mama Jill loves to hop along the forest, collecting beautiful flowers for her hat and Little Joey, well, he just wants to relax in Mama’s pouch! Pattern is now available at Etsy and Craftsy.

I’ve been wanting to do another Australian animal since my koala and I’m so thrilled to finally finish my kangaroo design! Originally, I had planned to do only one kangaroo but it just didn’t quite feel complete without its Joey. I also added golden wattles (Australia’s national flower) to Mama Jill’s hat.

Have you seen a kangaroo before on your travels? Or would like to see one? About 8 years ago,  my husband and I and our then 2-year-old daughter visited a wildlife park.  We got to see plenty of eastern grey and red kangaroos and wallabies. I can’t remember if we got to pat a kangaroo but my daughter definitely got to pet a wallaby. It was a very exciting experience for her, she wasn’t even scared one bit!

The pattern is marked easy and suitable for advanced beginners – no complex stitches but there is a number of sewing required.  You will need to know how to make a magic ring/circle, crochet in spirals, chain, crochet in foundation chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, crochet in front loops, single crochet increase and decrease. You’ll also need to know basic sewing technique, in this case whipstitching to sew all the parts together.

I used a 3mm hook and 8 ply acrylic yarn for Little Joey and he measures 13cm (5 inches) tall. 3.5mm hook and 8ply acrylic yarn for Mama Jill and she measures 26cm (10 inches) tall.

You will need:

  • 3mm and 3.5mm crochet hooks
  • 8 ply Acrylic yarn in Light Brown at least 100g (270m/295yds)
  • 8 ply Acrylic yarn in Cream at least 15g (44m/48yds)
  • 8 ply Acrylic yarn in Yellow and Green at least 5g (14m/15yds) each
  • Small amount of Dark Grey yarn
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Polyester toy stuffing
  • 2x 14mm plastic safety eyes
  • Sewing pins
  • Stitch markers

Pattern is now available at Etsy and Craftsy. I hope you have fun crocheting Mama Jill and Joey. You can share pictures of your finished amigurumi on Instagram, use #helloyellowyarn (or you can tag me @maryjcarlos) or post on my Facebook page.  I would love to see them!

Happy crocheting!
