We hear about it almost every day: the bees and butterflies are in trouble. Our very important pollinators are dying and we need to do something to protect these species so we can continue to enjoy our delicious fruits and vegetables.

The good news is that you can plant a pollinator garden on your property that will be both beautiful and helpful to our friends, the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

What To Plant In A Pollinator Garden

There are plenty of lovely options for a pollinator garden. Here are a few essential tips to make sure you have the right plants:

1. Plants from local, Canadian nurseries.
  • Many large chain and big box stores carry brands and plants that are grown in the US. The US has different standards and seeds, and you cannot be sure that they will produce quality plants in the long-term.
  • Your local, Canadian garden shop or nursery will grow their own high-quality plants with seeds from Canada (unless specified otherwise), which means that they are guaranteed. Each nursery has its own unique guarantees and standards, so be sure to ask for their details.
  • Your local nursery will care about the quality of their plants as they want to ensure a positive experience for their customers — they care about their reputation and they want you to keep coming back.
2. Plants without chemicals.
  • Many chains will sell products that contain neonicotinoids (sometimes referred to as neonics). Neonicotinoids are a form of insecticide and the effects from the chemical have a lasting, negative impact in nature.
  • Neonics contaminate the soil, the pollen of plants, and our water, and they are toxic to bees and butterflies.
3. Plants with bright colours, large landing areas, and lots of flowers.
  • Bees and butterflies actually prefer landing on flowers, not just hovering above them, so it’s important to plant flowers that feature large petals or leaves.
  • Plants that provide plentiful flowers are also ideal. The more flowers, the more pollen.
  • Plants with hollow stems provide shelter to some bees and they offer areas for the females to breed.
  • Colourful plants, particularly plants with yellow, pink, and purple flowers are very attractive to bees and butterflies.
Top Flowers To Plant In A Pollinator Garden

As you select your favourites, keep in mind that you want your plants to bloom at different times to ensure that your gardens are flowering all season long.

The list of ideal pollinator plants is long, but here are a few of our favourites:

  • Aster
  • Basil
  • Black-Eyed Susan
  • Bee Balm
  • Butterfly Bush
  • Cardinal Flower
  • Columbine
  • Blanket Flower
  • Carpet Geranium
  • Caryopteris
  • Cosmos
  • English Lavender
  • Globe Thistle
  • Hebe
  • Huckleberry
  • Hyssop
  • Purple Coneflower
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Snowberry
  • Spotted Joe Pye Weed
  • Stonecrop
  • Sunflower
  • Wild Bergamot

Planting a pollinator garden is a lovely idea, but make sure that you have chosen the right plants for the right location, and that they’ll grow at the right times and at the right heights so your garden looks beautiful all season long. Contact the team at Green Thumb Landscaping and we’ll help you plant the perfect pollinator garden.

Be honest: who do you know that hasn’t made a landscaping mistake? We bet you have. I bet someone in your family has. I bet your neighbour has. It’s only natural. It seems like it should be simple to choose the right plants, or prune the right way, or get into the soil and improve our landscaping. While it’s great to learn from your mistakes, you may end up paying the price. You’re dirty, sore, and disappointed. That ends now.

While it’s really important to know what you want to do with your landscaping, it’s equally important to know what NOT to do.

Here are a few trends that have come and gone, and should not be followed in your landscaping upgrades:

No More Waterfalls

I’m sorry, but I’ve just got to say, “Stop it!” Waterfalls are lovely when you’re on a vacation at a fancy hotel or visiting Niagara Falls, but they don’t belong in your backyard.

First, you need to try and find an appropriate place for such a focal point that is away from people and pets for safety reasons, away from trees for leaf and dirt, and away from tree roots and power lines. Then, you need space around it so the water can flow into an area and back out again — if you thought a waterfall would just be a small ornament on your grounds, forget it! The amount of space you will require to build a properly functioning waterfall feature is surprisingly large. Next, you need to consider hardscaping elements to add structure and adding fish to eat the bacteria to keep the water clean — so now you’re a pet owner too! Finally, you will need to consider what to do every season with shut down, drainage, and more.

Be Careful with Native Plants

The concept of planting native plants is very much on trend, and while there are some environmental aspects to this idea, there are many issues with planting native plants too. There is a common misconception that native plants will grow successfully when planted because they “belong” in the region. This is not always true. Not all native plants are hardy, cold tolerant, or drought tolerant. Some native plants will take over your garden, much like a weed. Other native plants will be susceptible to the same insect and disease issues as non-native plants. You need to be careful when choosing to plant native plants in your gardens and not blindly follow a trend — when the only living plant in your garden bed is Purple Loosestrife, you will be sorry.

Stop Planting On-Trend Colours

The colour of the year in 2018 was purple. If you like purple, that’s great. If you don’t, then we really hope that you didn’t plant it in your gardens to be “on-trend”. Aside from being an impractical investment of time and money, planting trendy colours may not work with your home or your style. It’s important to look at the big picture and your whole property. You want to be sure that your landscaping adds beauty, complements your home, and speaks to who you are as a homeowner. Your landscaping is a long-term investment that adds enjoyment to your home and curb appeal to your neighbourhood, don’t fall prey to time-limited trends.

Green Thumb Landscaping by Green Thumb Landscaping - 2M ago

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
―  Chinese proverb

At Green Thumb Landscaping, we know that every homeowner appreciates an expertly put together landscape, incorporating a variety of plants and hardscapes. Trees are an integral element of any property or estate.

The top question we hear about trees is: What kind of tree should I plant?

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors. Some properties have room to plant a variety of species of trees, and others only have room for one. There are important aspects to consider when selecting a tree for your grounds.

Tree Planting Considerations

Here are some important considerations that will help you determine which tree will work best for your property:

Why do you want to plant a tree?

Trees are beautiful and will add enjoyment and value to your home, but is there another purpose to your planting? Ask yourself:

  • Are you looking to create visual interest?
  • Do you want to see changing colours in the fall?
  • Do you prefer an evergreen?
  • Are you hoping to create shade?
  • Do you want to enhance your privacy?
  • Are you concerned about mess (e.g. pine cones, nuts, or leaves)?
What sort of growth pattern or shape do you like?

Every tree has a unique way of growing. Some will grow tall and thin, others become quite wide, and some trees will become enormous over time. Ask yourself:

  • Do you want your tree to grow quickly?
  • How much space do you want your tree to take up?
  • Are you interested in shaping your tree into an ornamental design?
  • Do you prefer a tree with a natural shape?
  • Do you want your trees to form a hedge, like a cedar?
  • If you have perennials that require sun, will the tree shade the area?
Tree Planting Suggestions

While everyone has their own favourite trees, here are a few trees that make lovely additions to landscaping:

Sugar Maple Tree

Sugar Maples are beautiful and hardy trees that grow really well in Ontario. They provide a large canopy, stunning changing colours in the fall, and sap for maple syrup!

Silver Maple Tree

Silver Maples are another lovely and hardy tree that feature a silver coloured bark. These trees grow faster than the Sugar Maples, but they will become quite large in time and can grow up to 35 metres in height!

Blue Beech Tree (American Hornbeam)

Blue Beech trees, unlike their Beech counterpart, grow on a smaller scale. They are very attractive shade trees that grow well amongst Cherry, Maple, Oak, and other similar trees.

White Oak Tree

If you’re not concerned about growing time, White Oaks are a fantastic choice for your grounds. These slow-growing trees provide excellent foliage and deep shade, making it a great choice in the hot summer months.

Ornamental Pear Tree

Ornamental Pear trees are simply lovely. They are non-fruit bearing but provide pretty flowers and attractive foliage. The Chanticleer grows in a pyramid shape which will add very pleasing visual interest to your grounds.

There are so many other wonderful trees to plant, like Japanese Maples, Cedars, and Magnolias — it’s hard to choose just one!

Planting a tree on your property is a wonderful idea but requires some serious forethought as it is a long-term commitment. For expert advice and planting, contact Green Thumb Landscaping today.
