Indiegogo’s new Add-On Perks feature lets you seamlessly offer your backers secondary perks along with your standard perks.

Successful crowdfunding campaigns come in many forms, but they all have one common feature: well thought-out perks. Our Perk Strategy Guide notes that campaigns offering perks raise an average of 143% more than campaigns without perks. But this isn’t the full story. It’s important to offer your backers the right types of perks and offer them the right way.

Chances are you already have a list of perks in mind but aren’t sure how to keep them organized. You want backers to be able to select multiple perks, but you don’t want to confuse them about which perks can be selected together.

There are a number of tools you can use to keep your perks organized. For example, you may find it useful to offer secret perks, to have a featured perk, or to run a flash sale. But to build out a sophisticated perk strategy with distinct tiers of primary and upsell perks, the best tool to use is the add-on perks feature.

What Are Add-On Perks?

The add-on perks feature allows you to seamlessly upsell to your backers by offering a secondary perk to be selected with the standard perk. For example, if you have an eBike as a standard perk, you could offer an extra battery as an add-on perk.

Add-ons have the same basic purpose as other perks: to help drive contributions to your campaign. However, the add-on feature has a few specific benefits, including:

  1. Less Clutter. Add-on perks allow you to have less accessory and upgrade perks on you campaign page and avoid clutter on the backer’s end.
  2. Organized Shipments. You will have an easier time organizing shipments for delivery because all the perks go under one contribution on you perks claimed and donations csv. If you didn’t have the add-on perks feature, you would need to match backer email addresses to get separate contributions to go out in one delivery.
  3. Backer Convenience. Backers can check out multiple perks in one contribution instead of going through checkout one perk at a time.
Are Add-On Perks Right for Your Campaign?

If potential backers come to your campaign page and see a long list of perks, they may become overwhelmed. Not knowing which perk to select, they may find it easier to select nothing and click away. This is a common experience for shoppers known as choice overload or choice paralysis.

Take a look at your perk offerings. If you think backers may experience choice overload when trying to select from your list of perks, then add-on perks could be a good fit for your campaign.

What if you’ve already launched your campaign and you want to reconfigure your offerings to include upsell perks through the add-on feature? No problem! You can always add, edit, or remove perks during your campaign.

What Types of Perks Are Best as Add-Ons?

Only certain types of perks work as add-ons. Specifically, an add-on needs to be a perk that is logically associated with another perk that a backer selects first. So, think of an add-on as an upsell or cross-sell item.

Add-On Perks That Work

There are two basic types of add-ons that work best:

  1. Upgrades: a functional improvement to a product such as lighter wheels on a bike.
  2. Accessories: a supplemental item associated with a product such as a case for a phone.

Add-On Perks That DON’T Work

Add-ons shouldn’t be used to bundle random or unrelated items. Doing so could confuse or distract backers and wouldn’t benefit your ultimate goal of driving campaign contributions.

Here are two examples that don’t work:

  1. If you’re crowdfunding a new water filter and offering that as a perk, you don’t want to offer an add-on t-shirt. You may consider offering a t-shirt as a stand-alone perk, but it wouldn’t make sense as an add-on because it doesn’t upgrade or accessorize the main perk.
  2. If you’re crowdfunding a scooter, you don’t want to offer an add-on poster for the same reason.

As a guiding principle for your perks: backers get most excited about your actual product rather than branded merchandise. The Indiegogo Perk Strategy Guide explains: “You don’t want your contributors lured away from your super-cool charger or scooter by a $25 t-shirt or coffee mug.”

Add-On Perks Success Story: Maxfoot

Maxfoot is a foldable eBike designed for both daily commutes and weekend adventures. The campaign was an immediate success, quickly shattering its funding goal. This success was in part due to the fantastic perk strategy the Maxfoot team put together.

Primary perks offered by Maxfoot included a super early bird special of two discounted eBikes and a number of early bird specials for various models of the eBike. Each of these perks came in several color options.

Here’s how Maxfoot supplemented their primary perk offerings with add-on perks:

After selecting a perk and clicking “BACK IT,” supporters are taken to the pre-checkout page, which features a list of “Perks you may also like.” These are the add-on perks that can be quickly selected by clicking “ADD PERK.” Here’s how it looks for backers:

Maxfoot’s crowdfunding success was in part due to their fantastic perk strategy, which included Add-On Perks.

“The add-on feature makes it easy for backers,” the Maxfoot team told Indiegogo. “Backers love the ability to add everything together in one order.”

Maxfoot also explained how the add-on feature increased campaign contributions. “It’s so tempting when they see, ‘Oh, I can add this on and add that on and it’s not that much money.’ So they add more perks than they would without this program.”

According to Maxfoot, the add-on feature made them “much more confident” about being able to upsell upgrades and accessories to their backers.

As part of the Arrow Certification Program, Arrow Electronics gives Flash Funding to qualified Indiegogo campaigners with Arrow Certified Technology. Over $1.7 million has been awarded since the beginning of the partnership, and ActivePuzzle is the first winner of 2019. You can qualify for a chance to win Flash Funding by joining the Arrow Certification Program.

For eight years, Meir Sela had been searching for an easy way to teach young children the principles of robotics, but he always came across scientific language barriers. Electronics, mechanics, and computer languages were just too difficult for kids to learn with.

Finally, Sela realized that all children can speak one language fluently—the language of puzzles. Working with the ActivePuzzle team, Sela has tapped into the power of puzzles to help children intuitively discover the principles of robotics.

ActivePuzzle: Not Just Another Robot Building Game

ActivePuzzle is a game that lets kids build robots out of puzzle pieces without any complex coding needed. Each of the game’s puzzle blocks serves a different, vital function. For example, one block stores the battery that powers the robot, while another holds a proximity sensor that allows it to discern objects in front of it.

Kids can play with the pieces, joining them where they fit naturally to find the correct match. Amazingly, these simple puzzle pieces can combine to create items like a maze runner, a wake-up alarm, a smart fan, and more. As they work through the fun process, kids learn critical robotics, logic, problem solving, and spatial cognition skills.

Founder Sela notes that “It’s true that there are many robot building block games out there, but I was looking for something else.” Ultimately, the educator and computer engineer has found a way to join learning and fun in a delightful way—a way that has appealed to hundreds of backers.

“One of the Best Things”: Crowdfunding For ActivePuzzle

Because of the Indiegogo experience, Sela has become a steadfast advocate for crowdfunding.

“Crowdfunding is one of the best things that has happened to the startup industry in the last decade,” he said. Sela found that there were three main benefits to crowdfunding:

  • Buzz: ”People around the world get to know your product and brand in a short time.”
  • Preproduction-payment: “This was crucial for our business cash flow.”
  • Community and feedback: “These are two crucial things for founders.”

Sela also lauded Indiegogo’s “awesome ecosystem of entrepreneurs and backers all around the world who actively support innovative projects.” Because ActivePuzzle is located in Tel Aviv, Israel, this strong international community was particularly important. Sela notes that he received personal support from Indiegogo representatives when setting up their project, and the simple funding integration with his foreign bank made a huge difference.

ActivePuzzle launched on Indiegogo with a cheerful, short video that captured the playful yet educational nature of their product. It featured a young girl playing with ActivePuzzle pieces.

ActivePuzzle on Indiegogo: https://igg.me/at/activepuzzle - YouTube

With help from this powerful video, ActivePuzzle’s educational mission and ingenious design attracted attention from both press and backers. Active Puzzle was featured by places like Digital Journal, Mental Floss, Flipboard, ABC8, Medium, and Make. The company has raised over $50,000 from nearly 500 backers via crowdfunding.

Currently, ActivePuzzle is in the mass production process, which includes plastic molding and injection, printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, PCB assembly, packaging, and documentation. They have also started the fulfillment process, which includes collecting backers’ shipping details, letting them customize add-ons, and planning transportation for the final products.

Arrow Expertise In Action

The creation process wasn’t all fun and games for Sela and his team. As is usual with especially creative innovations, ActivePuzzle was challenged early on.

“We faced several prototyping issues,” Sela said, “but we got personal support from Arrow experts. They helped us select the right electronic components for our requirements.” Sela noted that throughout the manufacturing process, the Arrow Electronics Bill Of Materials (BOM) quote was “by far the most comprehensive and most reasonably priced.”

Sela contacted Arrow Electronics right when he needed help, and they were able to answer and solve the prototyping problem quickly. Sela recommended, “From my experience, the only thing I would suggest is to contact Arrow as early as possible during your design and production process, so that your BOM schedule matches Arrow quotation lead times.”

After Sela’s great experience, Arrow Electronics has won a passionate fan. “If you’re a founder and your product includes electronics, I see no reason why you wouldn’t want to use the awesome Arrow services and support,” he said. “You get the best consultants for your design and BOM; you get the most trusted and well-priced part supply; and you get listed and promoted within Arrow’s community. In my view, it’s a win-win-win situation.”

A Word to Fellow Entrepreneurs

Sela, ever the advocate for education, did want to pass on some advice. As he said, “I would recommend that entrepreneurs use the Arrow services as they work on electronic design and BOM part purchasing. No one else I know provides such professional and comprehensive support—and for free. Purchasing from Arrow will also save your business money; they have the best prices for mass production.”

Ultimately, Sela said that “As entrepreneurs you get the best of all worlds. Joining the Arrow Certification Program gets you promotion, free electronic design and part consultation, great prices for BOM parts, and, finally, the chance to win a cash prize!”

Flash Funding: ActivePuzzle Wins $25,000 from Arrow

ActivePuzzle is officially the latest Indiegogo campaign to win Flash Funding from Arrow, and the ActivePuzzle team is very excited about the extra $25,000 they have to support their project.

“We couldn’t ask for a better time to receive it,” Sela said, “just when we have so many expenses with production and fulfillment.”

Flash Funding winners are chosen from eligible campaigns in the Arrow Certification Program. In addition to funding opportunities, the program offers product discounts, engineering consultations, manufacturing support, supply chain management, and marketing opportunities. Technology isn’t just advancing in areas like smartphones and transportation. There’s also a lot of innovation happening in the world of pet tech. It turns out, humans aren’t the only ones who get excited about new technology. So why not treat your pet to something high tech?

We’ve compiled a few of our favorite pet tech inventions for dogs, cats, or pet owners. By contributing to one of these campaigns, you’re helping entrepreneurs bring the future of pet tech to life. Your pets will thank you!

1. Wicked Ball – Your Pet’s Joy When Home Alone

This clever toy is designed to keep your pets entertained and active while you’re away. Both dogs and cats can enjoy endless hours of playtime with Wicked Ball. Its features include three reactive modes, a snack reward system, and an obstacle avoidance system. The basic operating functions of the ball are easy to switch between and don’t require an app. It’s also made from highly durable material that’s both waterproof and easy to wash.

Wicked Ball was created by the team of entrepreneurs at Cheerble, a company based in Pymble, Australia. They are also the makers of WICKEDBONE, a smart, bone-shaped toy for dogs.

2. VAVA Mobile Pet Cam – Peace of Mind on Wheels

VAVA Mobile Pet Cam is a sleek pet camera on wheels that moves on all surfaces. Its many features include two-way audio, a built-in laser pointer for teasing your cat, a treat dispenser, and a battery life that lasts for seven days on standby. The app is also enabled for taking photos and videos, real-time bark alerts, and account sharing.

The Mobile Pet Camp is the fourth campaign run by VAVA on Indiegogo. Their past campaigns include a dash cam and a wire-free home cam. Currently they’re also running a campaign for the VAVA 4K Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector.

3. Wayzn – Automatic Sliding Pet Door Opener

What good are all these fancy pet toys if your dog gets locked in the backyard all day? That’s where Wayzn comes in.

Wayzn converts your sliding glass door into an automatic door that you control with an app. There are no tools needed for installation and you can set it up yourself in minutes. After installing, there are three ways to use Wayzn. When you’re home, you can set the motion sensors to allow the door to automatically open and close when your dog stands at the door. When you’re away, you can integrate Wayzn with smart cameras so you can see who has triggered the door to open. Also, for security, you can set the app so that you need to approve the open/close function.

4. Hyperscrub – The 1st Medical-Grade Dog Paw Scrubber

Pet tech isn’t all about playtime. Innovation is also happening in pet hygiene. Dogs in particular aren’t famous for their cleanliness. They can use a little help in this department.

Hyperscrub is an easy way to deep clean your dog’s paws. It’s the first medical-grade scrubber specially designed to eliminate dirt, germs, and bacteria. It helps to soften dogs’ paws, stop the spread of contaminants, and fight salt burn and allergic reactions. The cleaning process only takes about two minutes.

After a long day of playing with new tech toys, what could be better than a nice paw scrub?

5. Nybble – World’s Cutest Open Source Robotic Kitten

If you’re looking to add another pet to your family, why not make it a robotic pet? This is 2019, after all. Aren’t we supposed to be living in the future?

In terms of robotic pets, you may never find one cuter than Nybble. According to its makers, Nybble was designed to be the world’s cutest open source robotic kitten. While this kitten may not have fur or whiskers, it is full of life. You can control Nybble’s movements with a micro-controller or even with short voice commands (with the right programming).

Since this is an open source robot, it serves as a fantastic learning opportunity for kids and adults alike. According to the Nybble team, this innovative robotic pet is for anyone who likes “graceful cats, tiny computers, hackable software, customizable models, or connecting with new friends around the world.”

Find something here you’d love for yourself or your pet? Join the community of entrepreneur pet lovers by backing one of these campaigns on Indiegogo InDemand.

The fashion industry has gotten a bad rap for its harmful impacts on the environment. Not only is it a major contributor to the carbon footprint, it also is the world’s second largest polluter of local fresh water. Basically, if you’re the type of person who wears clothes, then you may not be as environmentally conscious as you think.

Fortunately, entrepreneurs around the world are coming together to tackle this problem. Since 2015, the H&M Foundation has held the Global Change Award (a.k.a. “the Nobel Prize of fashion”) to provide sustainable fashion entrepreneurs with the resources they need to take their products to market. The prestigious award attracts thousands of applicants, and five winners are selected to share €1 million in grants along with other perks.

This year, Indiegogo launched an initiative with the H&M Foundation to sweeten the deal. All winning companies were able to use Indiegogo’s crowdfunding platform to help launch their businesses as soon as possible—and to connect with potential customers right away.

The 2019 Global Change Award attracted an awe-inspiring cast of entrepreneurs and fashion industry leaders. The expert panel included Steven Kolb, president and CEO of The Council of Fashion and Design of America; Bandana Tewari, Former Editor-at-Large at Vogue India and contributor to The Business of Fashion; and Edwin Keh, CEH of The Hong Kong Institute of Textiles and Apparel. Also present at the event were Indiegogo’s very own Sarah Meister, Hardware Design and Technology Growth Manager, and Adeeti Goswami, Senior Campaign Strategist.

The true stars of the event, of course, were the entrepreneurs, known to the H&M Foundation as the “heroes” for the positive impact they will have on the planet.

Indiegogo is excited to highlight each of this year’s heroes below. If you see an innovation you like, you can help make it an even bigger success by visiting the entrepreneur’s Indiegogo campaign and becoming a backer. It’s a great opportunity to participate in the global revolution in sustainable, eco-friendly fashion.

2019 Global Change Award Winners

1. Sustainable Sting by Green Nettle Textile

In Kenya, the soil is thin, the hills are often too steep for machines, and irrigation can be a challenge. So, how do you grow local materials for fabric?

The answer is to use plants that grow naturally in the region and don’t require any fancy agricultural techniques. In Kenya’s case, that means stinging nettles, which grow like weeds and are considered a serious nuisance.

Green Nettle Textiles has developed an innovative eco-fabric using local nettles. The resulting material has a linen-like quality and can be used for all varieties of clothing. Bonus: turning nettles into textiles can provide thousands of jobs to farmers across Kenya, and can employ artisans around the globe.

By backing this campaign, you can receive perks, including a green nettle hair clip or hair band, a kids poncho, a bed throw, or an eco-friendly blanket.

2. Lab Leather by Le Qara

Not surprisingly, traditional leather production is harmful to the environment (as well as animals). Each year, leather production requires 400 billion gallons of water and releases toxins and heavy metals into the environment.

Le Qara set about finding an alternative, ultimately creating a vegan, eco-friendly bioleather made from Peruvian plants and fruits. The innovative material not only has the toughness of animal leather, but also the texture and color. Since it is 100% biodegradable, used products can be recycled and turned into liquid compost.

The fashionable perks available to supporters of this campaign include a bioleather card holder, a silver-plated ring or bracelet, or bioleather earrings.

3. Clothes that Grow by Petit Pli

How often do you buy your child a pair of clothes that are only worn once or twice before being discarded? What if you could buy a pair of clothes that would grow with your child? That may sound like magic, but it’s actually a reality, thanks to the London-based entrepreneurs at Petit Pli.

Founded by aeronautical engineer Ryan Mario Yasin, Petit Pli clothes are a serious feat of ingenuity. The colorful, origami-and-aerospace-engineering-inspired material is waterproof, windproof, breathable, and durable enough to survive years of growth-spurts and playground antics.

One suit of clothes can fit your child from nine months to age four. That means more than two years of being good to the environment while saving on clothing expenses.

Perks available to supporters of this campaign include the award-winning suits, available in black, green, and blue.

4. The Loop Scoop by circular.fashion system

Used clothing materials are rarely recycled into new clothes. If the fashion industry is ever going to be sustainable, this is a problem that needs to be addressed. The Berlin-based company circular.fashion may just have the perfect solution.

The company’s digital platform allows clothing to be tracked “from sketch to scrap.” In other words, an article of clothing can be traced throughout its life cycle by material suppliers, clothing brands, consumers, and recyclers. This new level of transparency could make a serious difference in the amount of waste created by the fashion industry, and it could also curb the industry’s contribution to water and air pollution.

Find out more by supporting this campaign today. Supporters can select from a number of perks, including a Circular T-Shirt, a Circular Design Kit, and a one-year membership. There are also 50 spots available for a workshop in Amsterdam/Berlin and New York.

5. Sane Membrane by dimpora

Quality outdoor wear is often distinguished as being simultaneously waterproof and breathable. Unfortunately, this technology comes at a cost to the environment. After washing your outdoor wear, or after exposing it to normal wear and tear, it could be releasing microplastics and non-degradable carcinogenic toxins into the environment.

Sane Membrane, created by Zurich-based dimpora, is the non-toxic alternative. This mineral-based membrane does not contain fluorine and can be made to be biodegradable. Thanks to advanced technology resulting from five years of research, the product still keeps your clothes dry and warm as effectively as toxic products. They are a true inspiration and great partners to any fashion company that wants to contribute to protecting the planet and our living conditions. The initiative with Indiegogo adds an important piece as it also enables the public to be at the very heart of finding and funding a future for sustainable style.”

– Karl-Johan Persson, board member of H&M Foundation and CEO of H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB.

After the success of 2019’s Global Change Award, Indiegogo is excited to help future campaigns in sustainable fashion succeed. So look out for future collaborations between Indiegogo and H&M.
