Getting your pet flea free is critical. Fleas are one of the worst problems a pet owner can have. Knowing your pet is suffering from having these blood-sucking parasites on their skin is bad, but it can get even worse if the fleas get out of hand and start going after you and your family. Flea infestations can end up being a costly and time-consuming issue to deal with so taking care of the situation before it becomes a huge problem is a smart idea. Here are some tips such as bathing your pet, seeing a vet and anti-flea medication, to help you get your pet flea free and feeling good.
First, if your pet has a flea problem that’s severe you should see a vet have them handle it professionally. Have a professional take care of your pet at the start to make sure that your pet is completely flea free and then you can be the one that’ll handle the upkeep of your pet after that. Once your furry four-legged friend has been returned from the vet it’s going to be on you to be the one that does everything to stick to the plan that will make sure your pet isn’t spending its days scratching itself crazy trying to deal with another bout of flees.
Giving your pet anti-flea medication is an important part of the process. This is one of the key pieces of a regiment that will deflea your pet. Then you’ll need to get to work on giving your pet a bath every so often. Check with your vet for learning what a good schedule for baths is so you’ll know exactly when to bathe your pet. Bathing your pet is a vital way of keeping its coat healthy and its skin clean. You’ll want to adhere to your vet’s schedule for baths to make sure the fleas don’t come back to pester your pet.

Some dogs enjoy taking baths while other dogs can turn it into a real struggle. Whether you’re trying to de-skunk your dog, de-flea your dog, or just trying giving your dog their scheduled bath it can sometimes be a struggle to get your fine four-legged friend to go along with the whole operation and be a good boy. Man’s best friend sometimes doesn’t act like it when you get them near a tub. Thankfully this series of tips will make you a pro on how to give a dog a bath. So let’s get you the info you need to get your dog clean.
Pet Washing Process
Make sure you have all your supplies in place before you start the process. You don’t want to find out that you’ve forgotten or misplaced your pet shampoo bar once you’ve gotten the dog into the tub. Get all the supplies organized and ready to go ahead of time and prep the bathtub with a towel or mat that will allow your dog to have some traction when they get in the water. The poor thing will already be stressed out enough about the bath as it is, not being able to keep their balance can only add to their stress and make your task all the more difficult.
You’ll want to use a happy voice for the whole process of bathing your dog. A dog that doesn’t like a bath is having a rough enough of things as it is, having its owner being angry or loud will only make a bad situation worse. Be soothing and comforting to your dog as you wash them. Making the process as friendly as possible for your pet will make it much easier on yourself as well.
Washing the Dog
Once you have gotten your dog into the bath it’s time to give them a good wash. Start by shampooing the neck and base of the skull. You want to get the shampoo down to the skin and work your way down the body. Fleas and ticks will try to head for higher ground once the shampooing begins and by starting at the neck you form a natural barrier that will allow you to make sure they can’t escape the shampoo and are removed from your dog by the end of the bath. Do your best to avoid getting any shampoo into the eyes or ear canal of your dog.
Once you have finished the bath you’ll want to usher the dog to an area in your house that it’s OK for them to shake themselves and get some of the water out. Have this area prepped and ready to go by the time you bring your dog over there and then once they are done with their natural attempts at drying you can go over them with a towel to get them completely dry.
Following these steps will turn what seems to be a tall task into a simple one and before you know it you’ll be an expert on how to bathe a dog at home.

Coffee, not only does it taste heavenly, it wakes us up and it is healthy! Yes it is true, coffee's benefits extend far beyond keeping us from falling asleep on the commute to work every morning. For instance one cup of coffee contains nutrients such as Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Manganese and Potassium, as well as Magnesium and Niacin (B3). In this blog post we will be sharing some of the health benefits this incredible drink has to offer. And if you are looking for a caffeine free boost in the shower or bath, our Cafe Au Lait cofee soap is one of the most popular soaps in our online store.
Lowers risk of type 2 diabetes – each incremental cup of coffee consumed daily (up to 6-8 cups) decreases your risk of contracting type 2 diabetes by 5-10%. Moreover, studies show that people who consume large quantities of coffee have a 23-50% lower risk of developing this disease. Furthermore, as reported in an extensive study, which compiled data from 18 studies with a total of 457,922 individuals, each daily cup of coffee was linked to a 7% reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Reduces risk of heart disease – consumption of at least two cups of coffee per a day has been found to lessen the risk of heart failure by 11%.
Decreases risk of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's diseases – according to a recent article ‘Coffee and Your Health’ published on WebMd: “For Parkinson’s disease, the data have always been very consistent: higher consumption of coffee is associated with decreased risk of Parkinson’s. That seems to be due to caffeine, though exactly how that works isn't clear. Coffee has also been linked to lower risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. A 2009 study from Finland and Sweden showed that, out of 1,400 people followed for about 20 years, those who reported drinking 3-5 cups of coffee daily were 65% less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, compared with non-drinkers or occasional coffee drinkers.”
Increases longevity – according to the article ‘12 Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee’ that was published on Woman and Home, “researchers at Stanford University have gone one better, discovering that people that drink coffee are more likely to live longer due to its ability to counter age related inflammation, which can cause a large range of health conditions including, heart disease and cancer”.
Doctors recommend drinking between two to five cups a day, although anyone drinking a minimum of one cup a day should experience the health benefits discussed above. With this myriad of health benefits why would anyone consider drinking only one cup!
Green Tea is viewed today as a miracle-like natural ingredient and so it comes as no surprise that the Chinese have been using green tea for centuries to treat almost everything varying from headaches to depression. Let us begin by breaking down what is green tea. It encompasses nutrients and vitamins such as vitamin B, folate (or naturally occurring folic acid), manganese, potassium, magnesium, caffeine and other antioxidants. Moreover, it is made from the Camellia sinensis plant, where fresh leaves from the plant are steamed to produce green tea (the leaves are used as they’re richer in antioxidants in comparison to other types of tea due to the way that they’re processed). Let’s have a look into the key benefits of green tea and why we are so excited about our Mint Green Tea Soap.
Contributes to weight loss - Green tea is thought to increase metabolism. This is because the polyphenol contained in green tea strengthens the levels of fat oxidation as well as the rate at which your body converts food into calories.
Decreases blood pressure - Regular consumption of green tea can decrease the risk of high blood pressure.
Prevents tooth decay – several studies suggest that the chemical antioxidant "catechin" in tea can remove bacteria and viruses that have a tendency to cause throat infections, dental caries and other dental infections.
Suppresses depression - Theanine is an amino acid, which is contained in tea leaves. Theanine provides a relaxing and soothing effect and thus can contribute to suppressing depression.
Anti-aging - According to a recent article, “Green tea can apparently also help with wrinkles and the signs of aging, This is because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Both animal and human studies have demonstrated that green tea applied topically can reduce sun damage.”
“Green tea has been shown to improve blood flow and lower cholesterol. A 2013 review of many studies found green tea helped prevent a range of heart-related issues, from high blood pressure to congestive heart failure. What’s good for the heart is usually good for the brain; your brain needs healthy blood vessels, too. In one Swiss study, MRIs revealed that people who drank green tea had greater activity in the working-memory area of their brains. Green tea has also been shown to help block the formation of plaques that are linked to Alzheimer's disease. Green tea seems to help keep blood sugar stable in people with diabetes. Because catechins lower cholesterol and blood pressure, they can help protect against the damage a high-fat diet can cause."
With all of the abundance in health benefits, why not sit back on this winter morning with a cup of hot green tea?
Avocado has become one of the most popular foods in the world, especially here in the United States. At Falls River Soap Company, our Avocado Soap with Jasmine Oil is one of our best selling handmade soap products. The rise is so significant that sales of Hass avocados, which make up more than 95 percent of all avocados consumed in the United States, soared to a record of nearly 1.9 billion pounds (or some 4.25 billion avocados) last year, more than double the amount consumed in 2005, and nearly four times as many sold in 2000.
This Super Food (yes that is right, the avocado is now recognized as a super food) is becoming so popular that there are restaurants, which are dedicated their whole menu to this fruit. Such avocado-only restaurants are popping up all over the world in metropolitan cities such as Amsterdam, London and New York City to name a few.
Here are some of the health benefits of avocados:
Enhanced digestion – although the avocado consists of a creamy-like texture, it is actually high in fiber with about 6-7 grams per half fruit. Eating foods with natural fiber reduces the risk of constipation and colon cancer, as well as maintains a healthy digestive tract.
Cancer - consumption of folate, a nutrient that produces and maintains new cells, (not to mention that avocados contain more folate per ounce than any other fruit) can protect against colon, stomach, pancreatic and cervical cancers.
Healthy babies – consumption of folate is vital for a healthy pregnancy as it reduces the risk of miscarriage and neural tube defects.
Osteoporosis treatment – the saponins substance, which is found in avocados, is associated with relief of symptoms in knee osteoarthritis.
Protection from chronic disease - according to a recent article in Medical News Today, researchers at the Department of Internal Medicine and Nutritional Sciences Program of the University of Kentucky, found that "high fiber intakes are associated with significantly lower risks of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and certain gastrointestinal diseases. Increased fiber intake has also been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and enhance weight loss for obese individuals.”
WebMd highlights some additional health benefits for avocados:
Avocados offer nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in every serving, including potassium (which helps control blood pressure), lutein (which is good for your eyes), and folate (which is crucial for cell repair and during pregnancy).
Avocados are a good source of B vitamins, which help you fight off disease and infection. They also give you vitamins C and E, plus natural plant chemicals that may help prevent cancer.
Avocados are low in sugar. And they contain fiber, which helps you feel full longer. In one study, people who added a fresh avocado half to their lunch were less interested in eating during the next three hours.
With all the health benefits, why not go avocado? Start with our amazing Avocado Soap!
When considering the secretive ingredients and industrious processes used to manufacture soaps, it comes as no surprise that chemically made soaps contain harmful chemicals, and questionable dyes and fragrances. In fact, when you wash your hands with chemically made soap, your skin absorbs these harmful substances, putting both your skin and your general health at considerable long term risk. This post delves into why you should consider replacing chemically produced soap with organic soap alternatives.
Chemicals and Pesticides Free - As all ingredients used in organic soaps are derived from plants and herbs, one of the greatest benefits that one can get out of using organic soap is in avoiding contact with any chemicals or pesticides. Furthermore, according to the American College of Toxicology report, high contact with chemicals like sodium laurel sulphate can cause long term skin damage. Natural soap is free of these harmful chemicals and risk free.
Gentler & Healthier on the Skin – It is no secret that many people do not respond well to chemically produced soaps. However, you can mitigate and possibly avoid skin problems that are induced by harmful chemical ingredients by switching to organic soap. This is because organic soaps do not contain ingredients like herbicides, chemical fertilizers, or pesticides.
Additionally, animal fats used in the manufacture of soaps can cause irritation in the skin due to its nature, while organic methods of manufacturing soap (made of vegetable oils instead of animal fats) protects the skin and are thereby much safer.
Effect on the Environment – For those seeking to protect our environment, natural organic based soap is the soap for you as it is completely environmentally friendly, as pesticides and chemicals are not used in the soap making process. Moreover, organic soap is significantly more biodegradable than chemically made soap, and most importantly does not contain synthetic chemicals. Lastly, according to the article “The Benefits of Organic Soap” on the Global Healing Center, “most organic soaps are cruelty-free, meaning they’re not tested on animals. Purchasing natural and organic products is better for the environment, too. Organic ingredients are grown without chemicals and pesticides, both of which can pollute the water supply, air and soil. Organic soap might not lead the charge in saving the world but it supports the fundamental effort.”
Soap can be made with a variety of different ingredients and can be created by employing as well as utilizing diverse methods and techniques. As there are countless ways of making soap, each of which have their own advantages and disadvantages, you can produce handmade soaps for sale with different forms and consistencies ranging from solid soap bars (soaps that are hard and firm), whipped bars (soaps that are solid while light and airy), liquid soap, and cream like form. This article explores the best soap making methods and techniques for beginners as well as experts. Let the fun begin!
Melt and Pour
Soap bars can be made with various different practices; we find the easiest method to be the “Melt and Pour”. This technique employs a pre-made soap base, which is melted and can be mixed with your choice of oils, scent, color, or any other ingredient or supplement that you wish to include. No need to handle the lye (a potent chemical that can cause severe burns or rashes to the skin if mishandled) as this step has already been completed (keep in mind that as this step has been completed for safety reasons and therefore limits you from fully customizing and personalizing your soap).
The Cold Process
The Cold Process (CP) method begins with pouring the lye into water or milk (wait for the lye to dissolve into a liquid base form). Next, you will need to heat your solid oils (like cocoa butter or animal fats) and any other additive that you would like to include in your soap.
Once both of these steps are completed, mix and blend the lye solution with the oils until the solution transforms into a thick like form. Next, pour the solutions into molds.
The Hot Process
The Hot Process (HP) technique requires the same steps as the CP and CPOP method; such that the necessary ingredients are combined and the mixture is blended until the solution thickens. As the soap boils, the water evaporates resulting in the soap mixture to transform into a neutral product (this is identified by chemists as the saponification process). Next, the solution needs to be poured into the mold as well as sit for 24 hours. Once the 24 hours have passed, slice the mold into separate pieces and let it sit for about 2 to 3 weeks. This gives the soap enough time to dry out and harden.
There are many ways to make handmade soaps for sale, but at Falls River Soap Company we favor the cold-process methods.
According to a recently published article on the Huffington Post relating to the effects of chemically produced cosmetics on our bodies, researches are unsure what the long term effect just might be. Jessica Assaf, founder of the bioactive skincare line ‘Raw is Everything’, says: “We don’t know how these ingredients are interacting when they come into play. The average woman puts 515 synthetic chemicals on her body every single day without even knowing. And 60 percent of what we put onto our skin is absorbed into our bodies.”
So why use organic skincare products?
Incredibly low regulation – There is a major problem in the commercial beauty product industry (or chemically produced beauty products), as there is little to no government regulations on what substances these daily used products comprise of. As stated in the Huffington Post article “The European Union has banned over 1,300 chemicals found in cosmetics. The FDA has only banned 8 and restricted 3.” It is clear from this text that many of the ingredients and products permitted in the U.S. have been banned in Europe and other countries, as past studies have demonstrated that such products are associated with cancer, reproductive harm and neurotoxicity. Furthermore, the FDA doesn’t impose any pre-market testing or approval before releasing these beauty products to the public.
Natural Fragrance – The FDA doesn’t enforce cosmetic companies to disclose the ingredients used in their fragrances as these ingredients are viewed as ‘trade secrets’. Generally speaking, this enables cosmetic companies to put whatever they want into the product all whilst claiming that such components are necessary for the product’s fragrance. These components can be incredibly harmful and can possibly create allergic reactions for the consumer. According to a recently published interview with ‘Juice Beauty’ founder Karen Behnke on The Dermstore Blog, “Other potentially harmful ingredients present in non-organic products are synthetic fragrances and artificial dyes due to concerns associated with endocrine disruption, and parabens due to their link to breast cancer.”
Lack of Nutrients – It is no secret that the majority of commercial beauty products lack in nutritional additives. Consequently, instead of enhancing the condition of the consumers’ skin, hair and nails, these chemically produced products can disguise potential health issues. Dr. Edward F. Group, founder of the ‘Global Healing Center’, claims the following: “Your skin has the ability to absorb certain compounds; however, a protective barrier is able to keep dangerous compounds, to some degree, out of the body. Even then, research still concludes that personal care products, when applied topically, can damage bodily systems and lead to untold health consequences”.
On the contrary, organic beauty products, which are rich in nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A, can mitigate such consequences. Furthermore, most organic and all-natural brands incorporate these fundamental vitamins into their products as well as enable consumers to purchase pure nourishing serums separately. At Falls River Soap, all of our fragrances used in our natural handmade soaps are pure essential oils (plant extracts); our colorants are derived from herbs and other natural sources (like fruit or vegetable extracts); and our preservatives are plant extracts.
