Hello, friends! Mikahla here from Eureka Crystal Beads with the first of many in my new series on color trends. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next project, wondering what to match with coral, or just generally wondering what’s in style this year (and why), read on

The “Color of the Year”
“An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge “

If you’ve been surfing social media this year, you’ve probably heard the mention of “Living Coral,” Pantone’s official color of the year…what does that mean? What shade of coral makes it living coral? Well, Pantone is best known for its proprietary “Pantone Matching System,” a universal color language. This system is used for printing, manufacturing and producing super-exact colors across a variety of different materials. This is useful to big brand names like Tiffany & Co – it helps them to match their company color on boxes, websites, postal mailers, and jewelry. Pantone has become so infamous as a color authority that designers and fashionistas worldwide look to them for trends and suggestions in color.

And why should that matter to a beader? Well, it does and it doesn’t!! Maybe getting the exact shade of living coral isn’t what’s important to us, or even within the realm of possibility. It’s the spirit of the color “living coral” that we should be trying to capture and embody in our work. Coral is a wonderful, workable, wearable shade that isn’t quite pink, and isn’t quite orange – and it’s trendy for summer 2019.

I’ve listed a few examples of coral beads that I think fit into this year’s theme (it’s flexible!)

“HOT SKY” COORDINATED MIX Toho Size-11
5x3mm CORAL LUSTER Czech Glass Gemstone Rondelles
SIZE-11 #70 CRYSTAL LUSTER CORAL LINED Miyuki Delica
PINK CORAL #5810 5mm Round Swarovski Crystal Pearls

Incorporate shades of “Living Coral” into your jewelry designs, pattern adaptations, and bead & stone collection to keep your work looking fresh and up to date. This shade is optimistic, versatile, and fairly gender neutral, making it a great addition to any beaders collection.

“Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.”

Do you ever feel like you need a little creative push? Are you looking for some inspiration to think (or, BEAD) outside of your comfort zone? Want to bead outside your box and possibly win a prize at the same time? Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Welcome to the Eureka Crystal Beads MAY BEADING CHALLENGE! #NOOK519

* * * For GENERAL PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES, scroll to the bottom! * * *

  • Zadig & Voltaire, NYFW, 2019
  • Zimmerman, NYWF, 2019
  • Badgley Mischka, NYFW, 2019

This month’s theme is LAVISH & LENGTHY and can be applied to both Necklaces and Earrings! Necklaces must be at least 24” long and earrings must dangle at least 3” from below the ear lobe of the wearer. Feel free to submit a necklace OR earrings – or both! As the winner is selected at random, you may submit as many pieces as you like.

Below is a helpful compilation of some information about cup chain, and some links to blog posts and tutorials outlining ways to work with it!

NECKLACE LENGTH CHART – 24″+

A Matinee at max length would work, but if you are making a necklace, you are probably working with Opera length (28″-37″) or Rope length (37″-60″)!

GUIDELINES:

HOW does this all work? Every month there will be a theme to follow. Examples of themes could be to feature a color or color palette, to show off a specific product, to work within a technique, or take inspiration from a fashion movement or decade! We welcome beader’s to submit creations of their own design, or ones that followed a pattern or video tutorial. Just make sure that you credit the designer (if the designer isn’t you). Themes will be announced at the beginning of each month. MAY 2019 THEME: LAVISH & LENGTHY

What is the DEADLINE for submissions? The deadline for submissions each month is the last calendar day – easy peasy!

How do I SUBMIT my entry? First, you’ll need to be a member of our online Facebook group: The Beader’s Nook at Eureka Crystal Beads. JOIN HERE, it’s free and fun! At any time during the month you can post your submission in the group to show it off and say a little something about it! ***NOTE: You’ll have to use the hashtag “#Nook519” (which should turn into a blue link after you type it) in your post so we can collect all the submissions at the end of the month. (In case you’re wondering: “519” = May 2019. So next month, the hashtag to use will use 619, for June 2019)  >>> Learn more about The Beader’s Nook HERE!

PRIZES, you say? Yes, that’s right! Each month we’ll select (1) participant at random to win a fun beady prize. There is no purchase required for entry. Our goal for these challenges is to be low-stress way for you to challenge and push yourself, but not to be in competition with your peers. Let’s all have some fun! (More serious competitions, for those interested, are coming down the pipeline – stay tuned!)

Can I submit MORE THAN ONE entry? Absolutely! Who are we to stifle your creativity!! BUT, it should be noted that additional entries will not gain you advantage in winning the random month-end prize.

Winter Greetings, Beading Friends! I don’t know about you and where you live, but here in Little Rhody (Rhode Island, USA) temperatures are dipping pretty low so I’m having to keep my beady fingers moving to stay warm! (What a predicament! Oh no – more beading!!!) Hopefully, no matter where you’re located, you’re keeping warm and getting to bead up a storm. Today’s blog is to help inspire your winter bead selections, and don’t we all need a little inspiration now and then? Check out how I’m getting inspired below!

This lovely winter landscape features the typical icey-blue tones of winter, but the addition of pale golden yellow is definitely what makes this feel out-of-the-box for me!

Center: Aquamarine 14mm Swarovski Crystal Rivoli / Clockwise from Top-Left: Crystal Metallic Sunshine 4mm Swarovski Crystal Bicone / Iridescent Dark Blue 3mm Swarovski Crystal Pearls / Gold 6mm Swarovski Crystal Pearls / 6mm Kheops Par Puca 2-hold Czech Glass Beads / Iridescent Light Blue 2mm Swarovski Crystal Pearls / Light Azore 8mm Swarovski Crystal Round Beads

This cool blue-grey landscape is perhaps a little more typical in our minds of icey winter colors. That fact, however, doesn’t make it any less stunning – especially when the stunning sparkle of Swarovski Crystal subtly brightens things up!

The soft pale blues and powdery pinks are a lovely addition to any winter color palette. I’m a fan, particularly, of the pinks – which are quietly unexpected when you remove them from a Spring palette and include them with ice and snow!

The deep teals and blues of this last winter-scape are sure to make you feel the same calm serenity of a frozen mountain stream – in solitude with the quietness of nature! I hope you like the bead colors I’ve selected to match it!

Ok folks, I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my Winter-Inspiration Palettes! I, personally, CAN’T WAIT to be bringing you happy, lovely, soft, and WARM Spring palettes… But until then, let’s bead our little fingers off to stay warm!!

Until next time!

-Leah
