Cosmetologists use many different tools to do their job well, ranging from blow dryers and brushes to balm oils and tin foils. One of the most important tools that is often overlooked is the array of hair products that cosmetologists get to use when styling and coloring hair. Excellent products yield excellent results, and that’s why Elite Academy of Cosmetology is partnered with Wella Professionals to provide our students with outstanding products to learn with.

The process for becoming a licensed cosmetologist in Oklahoma can seem intimidating or confusing for some people. Fortunately, the process breaks down into a few relatively simple steps:
Complete at least 8th grade
Apply and enroll in the beauty school of your choice
Complete 1,500 cosmetology program credit hours
Pass the state licensing exam, both written and practical
Each of the steps in the enrollment process are important, so we’ve broken each of them down to talk in depth about what you can expect.
Why do I have to complete 8th grade to become a cosmetologist?
Professional cosmetologists are usually responsible for managing their own book of business. This means you would be responsible for scheduling appointments with your clients and essentially building your own business. Finishing the 8th grade can give you a basic education to allow you to conduct your business more professionally, which means your business can perform better.
Applying & Enrolling in Beauty School
Once you’re ready to begin your journey into the beauty industry, one of the biggest choices you get to make is which beauty school to apply to and attend. Every beauty school should offer you an education that allows you to take the licensing exam, but that’s where the similarities end.
Accreditation & Financial Aid
Some schools are accredited, while others are not. Accredited cosmetology schools are allowed to provide federal financial aid options to students who qualify, while unaccredited schools cannot. This can be a major deciding factor, especially if affording school could be a challenge.
In addition to financial aid opportunities, good beauty schools should strive to help their new students find scholarships to make paying for beauty school easier. Some schools offer their own scholarships, while other schools help students apply for publicly available scholarships. Make sure the school you’re considering provides the support that you need!
Providing the 1,500 classroom hours for the state licensing exam is the bare minimum that a beauty school should do. Excellent cosmetology schools can offer extracurricular activities, business development lessons, and continuing education opportunities. Be sure to ask what about what you can get out of your time in beauty school!
Pass the Licensing Exam
The cosmetology licensing exam is the last step to becoming a licensed cosmetologist in Oklahoma. This exam can be intimidating for many people, but the staff at Elite Academy of Cosmetology are dedicated to making it as manageable as possible for graduates.
The Practical Exam
The practical portion of the licensing exam is where graduates demonstrate their hands-on skills for cosmetology. For some people this is easier than traditional written testing because students have the opportunity to build muscle memory to help them succeed in the test.
The Written Exam
The written portion of the licensing exam will likely feel familiar for most students. This part of the exam can be intimidating for some graduates, which is why we strive to help our students feel confident and prepared to take the exam on head-on!
What do you think of your quiz results? Did you get a result you could be happy with? Each career path is different, so it’s important to find the career you are most passionate about. If you’re feeling anxious about going back to school, read our blog about whether or not beauty school is easy!
We’re always looking for ways to raise the bar at Elite Academy of Cosmetology. Samantha Harman, one of our educators at the school, has recently been taking that attitude to heart with her Instagram profile! Her Instagram has recently passed over 10,000 followers, and she has been making an effort to consistently post to keep the followers rolling in. It’s exciting to watch the channel grow so quickly!
Instagram Contest Winner
Sam’s follower count started shooting up in the past couple weeks, and there are a few things she is doing to make it happen. The event that really kicked everything off was when Sam won a contest on Instagram where the prize was a trip out to California. She got to shadow Justin Anderson for a day, a celebrity hairstylist who specializes in hair color and has worked with high-profile people like Jennifer Aniston and Miley Cyrus. The next day it was time for Sam to be pampered by the talented artist! The whole experience was paid for as part of the prize for winning the Instagram contest, and the whole thing felt surreal!
Sam’s trip to California definitely helped to get the ball rolling on her Instagram, and she has continued to put in diligent effort to keep the momentum going. She has worked hard to be consistent with her posting schedule, and has refined the art of using hashtags and emojis to great effect. She even has sponsors, such as Truss and Fanola, that are sending her products to test and feature, which is helping to grow her following even more! She incorporates educational elements to her posts too, which is also a big part of her success. It’s so exciting to see!
One of the things that Sam loves about her newfound success is that she can share her tips and strategies with her students at the school. She enjoys showing students that hard work can pay off, even if you’re from a small town in Oklahoma. Sam has the exciting opportunity of sharing her success with students and showing them how to make it happen for themselves. She also gets to continue teaching people through her Instagram! Her talent for teaching has really started to shine in recent weeks, and we’re excited to see where it will go next!
Words of Advice
Sam’s recent success on Instagram has taught her several things that she wants students at Elite Academy of Cosmetology to know:
“I’m just a normal human being. I’m trying to tie my love of education with social media instead of only hair posts. Instagram helps me educate people all throughout the world.”
She wants her students to know that they can find success for themselves. Many people think that cosmetology education is just to teach people to cut and style hair, but there are so many things you can do with that skill set. Your potential is only limited by your imagination!
At Elite Academy of Cosmetology, learning comes with doing and that’s why we get excited when our educators do incredible things like this! Our students get to learn from created and talented people who are able to take their careers to the next level. Are you interested in learning from educators who work in the industry for themselves? When it comes to veterans in the beauty space, few come more seasoned than Debra Wirtz! She’s been in the beauty industry for 48 years, so she brings mountains of experience to our school. She currently works as a director for both of the Elite Academy of Cosmetology campuses, with most of her time focused on our larger location in Lawton. Her wealth of knowledge and passion for learning are just part of why she makes such a huge impact at our schools!
One Bad Haircut to Start it All
Debra remembers the specific haircut that motivated her to enroll in cosmetology. She was fresh out of high school and stopped into a salon for a cut. She should have known better than to get a cut from this stylist because she showed up in slippers! The final result was so bad that Debra felt inspired to enroll in cosmetology school right away. She felt that nobody should have to feel how she did, and she wanted to help people feel their best, so cosmetology was the perfect fit for her.
Debra graduated from her cosmetology program a short time later in 1970, and worked as a stylist for the following nine years in Lawton, Oklahoma. She then moved with her husband to Louisiana in 1979 where she continued to flourish in her career. She taught beauty school, owned her own salons, a beauty supply store, and served as part of the local hair association. Beauty was never just a career for Debra, for her it is a way of life!
Returning Home to Lawton
Debra finally returned to Lawton in 2001 to live on a farm and retire with her husband. After only six months, she had grown tired of all the cows and trees and wanted to be working with people again! In 2002 she joined us at Elite Academy of Cosmetology and has been with us ever since!
Debra is an excellent model for her students as an educator and director because of her constant interest in learning.
”The learning never stops. I learn things from my students all the time! They are constantly showing me things on YouTube or a video their friend shares and I’ll say, ‘Wow, that’s cool!’ Just because I’ve been in the business this long doesn’t mean I know everything. It’s what keeps cosmetology from being boring; the industry is constantly new and changing.”
Debra’s fresh attitude and youthful excitement for learning is a big part of why she’s such a great mentor with our students. She absolutely loves the human connection that comes with her role, and she never tires of helping her students. For her, being a beauty school instructor isn’t about the hair, it’s about watching dreams and talents grow. It’s amazing to watch students develop their careers and show off what they can do!
Advice For Future Students
When asked about advice she would give to students who are considering a career in cosmetology, her response was emphatic:
”Don’t wait, do it now! Beauty school is the most amazing thing you can do for yourself. Procrastination is part of all of us, so don’t wait. Somebody is waiting for you to do their hair, and to be a part of their life is a very special gift.“
Debra continued to explain that you never know who is going to walk through your door and sit in your chair. She says she distinctly remembers a woman that came in about three years ago that left an impression. Debra asked the woman how she was doing, and her answer was hesitant, saying that she was okay. Debra continued to talk to her and found out that the woman had lost two of her sons within the past month, and that even though times were hard, Debra got to help that woman to have a better day.
”You never know what the people in your seat are going to share, but when they open up as a friend, that’s just amazing. We touch a lot of lives.”
Debra is a great example of how cosmetologists aren’t just hair stylists, but they are professionals that can make other people feel happy and better about themselves.

Cosmetology school may be different from high school or an academic school, but it can still be challenging for students. Beauty schools are very hands-on learning environments, so people who struggled with typical high school courses may find cosmetology school to be easier. Becoming a licensed cosmetologist also requires you to pass the state licensing exam, so students who struggle with taking tests may need additional help to be successful. Not to worry, regardless of your personality and learning style, beauty schools are there to support you and help you learn!
Like many other classes you may have taken, cosmetology school programs begin in a classroom with a teacher and textbooks. You need to have that basic foundation of understanding before you can start practicing services for yourself. Every school teaches classes differently, but most of them are aware that cosmetology school is full of all types of learners, so they strive to incorporate different teaching styles to help every student understand what they’re learning!
In many ways, cosmetology school is like your chemistry or biology labs in high school. When you first start the program, you spend more time in lectures and in a classroom setting to learn the basics like safety, sanitation procedures, and technique. Once you’ve learned your basic foundation, you then start doing more hands-on learning where you actually practice using the different products and tools you learned about. It’s very similar to high school science labs because you learn about a subject and then get to practice the principle for yourself!
Learning on the Service Floor
Most beauty school programs want to provide practical knowledge, which means you’ll spend a lot of time on the salon floor! Cosmetology is best learned through practice, so that’s why students are on the service floor for so much of their education. Not only can you solidify the knowledge you got in the classroom, you can also build your confidence working in a salon or spa environment while you’re in school. This experience can also help you pick up different soft skills such as customer service, finances, and much more! The clients you work with as a student stylist can also persist with you after graduation, so you’re able to build a network of your own before you even graduate. This can help you to know what services your clients prefer and how to best serve them, giving you a head start as a professional cosmetologist!
Yes, we know tests can be stressful for many people, so that’s why good beauty schools focus on test preparation from the very beginning! The licensing exams for programs like cosmetology, esthetics, or nail technician vary state by state, so most schools strive to prepare their students early on. Once students have completed their program hours and graduated from beauty school, they’re eligible to take the licensing exam. In Oklahoma state, your exam can include both written and practical elements, which is helpful for people who get test anxiety over traditional testing because it isn’t just a written test. Most cosmetology schools offer tutoring, review sessions, and more to help their students succeed, so be sure to ask how your school can support you!

Jessica Moore is one of the first graduates to come from Elite Academy of Cosmetology back in 2002. Since that time she has worked exceptionally hard to become a savvy stylist and successful salon owner. Her story is an outstanding example to us of what you can do with a cosmetology education combined with hard work and determination!
Cosmetology as an Art
Jessica never really considered cosmetology when she was growing up. She originally wanted to go to art school, but she knew that it wouldn’t make her very much money. She was trying to find a way to incorporate art into her career in some way, so Jessica enrolled in a nail program just four days after graduating high school! She started working right away after graduating because she knew she didn’t want to attend a traditional college. Working with nails was the perfect way to combine her love of art with the need to make a living.
The Drive to be a Salon Owner
When she was 24 years old, Jessica had her daughter and knew she needed to step up her game so she could provide for her growing family. She went back to cosmetology school to get her hair license so she could expand her earning opportunities. A year after that she had her son and was determined to step her game up yet another level so that she could make sure her family was taken care of. She worked for a salon a while afterwards, but decided she needed to be her own boss. Jessica leased a building, got a small loan, and opened her first salon!
Jessica’s first salon performed very well for seven years and even had six other employees. After those seven years, she decided she didn’t want to pay a lease to someone else for her business. She saved up and purchased a building for her salon to move into. The building required complete renovation inside and out and the end result is spectacular! Jessica has now had her salon open for more than ten years and is still going strong!
The Secret to Success
When asked about her secret to being successful, Jessica says that it’s important to find what you’re good at and stick to it.
”Don’t try to do 500 different things. Find the thing you love, take all the classes you can on it, and go for it!”
Jessica lives this advice in her own salon. She absolutely loves coloring and has made that her specialization. If a client comes in and asks for something she isn’t as specialized in, she will refer that client to a stylist in her salon who can perform the service. She explains that happy clients will be happy with your salon, regardless of whether or not you were the stylist to provide their service. If you try to give a client a service but aren’t specialized enough, that client may never return to your salon if it turns out poorly!
Jessica also mentioned how much her education at Elite Academy of Cosmetology helped her with her business skills. Tammy talks about how to be an excellent business owner, and even provides a whole class on it. She uses her own experiences to teach students how to run excellent businesses, and that drive for success is what inspired Jessica to open her own salon!
Advice For New Students
Jessica’s biggest piece of advice for students is to work very hard. Cosmetology isn’t always easy for people, but hard work always pays off. Make sure you ask lots of questions while you’re in cosmetology school. Jessica’s father always said you can ask people anything, and she recommends students follow that advice as well.
”What are they going to do, tell you ‘no’? Just ask somebody else then!”
Jessica’s attitude is one of learning and tackling challenges head-on. If someone tells her about a challenge, she asks “but did you die?” Jessica takes every challenge as a learning opportunity for you to build yourself up. She finds the learning experience in every challenge and works very hard to overcome it!

Cosmetology has the impressive potential to help people change their lives and build successful careers. Everyone has their own story to tell, and cosmetology is a field where people of all backgrounds can tell it. This month we talked with Candice Barnes about her story. She is an inspiring example of how you can reinvent yourself in a way you love.
Several years ago, Candice found herself in some legal trouble and was charged with a felony. Criminal felony charges stay on a person’s permanent record for life, so Candice had a difficult time finding work after serving her time. Two weeks after she was released, Candice enrolled at Elite Academy of Cosmetology. She found that cosmetology was the right choice for her because she could help people feel good about themselves, and express herself through art. It’s a career where she could be herself and pursue different advancement opportunities along the way. On top of that, cosmetology was a place where she could create a new life without her past getting in the way!
Readjusting to society was challenging at first for Candice, but Elite Academy of Cosmetology was a support and family to her. The excellent hair color education was what initially drew her to the school, but it was the support and family atmosphere that won her heart. She attended school at the same time as the school owner’s daughter, Samantha, and she was able to help Candice readjust to society in simple but impactful ways such as teaching her how to use a phone and social media. Candice said that everyone at the school was so helpful, and they really care about the students.
Life After School
Candice’s career had an explosive start after graduating from Elite Academy in 2015. She applied to Smart Style to be a stylist. She worked behind the chair for two months, and then applied to be a manager before her first 90 days were even up! She got the position and was relocated to Oklahoma City to help an unsuccessful salon turn business around. During her time there she was able to make the business profitable and hired two new managers under her. She was relocated again to Yukon to do the same thing. Now she works as the senior district leader and oversees operations for ten salons throughout Oklahoma. She finds herself doing profit/loss statements, staffing, recruitment, and scheduling. She coaches, inspires, travels, and helps with anything else Smart Style needs!
The key to Candice’s success has been providing excellent consultations and guest services, just as she was taught at Elite Academy of Cosmetology. She explains that you need to have a conversation with your client, provide an excellent consultation, and handle their wants and needs. She brought these principles to the salons at Smart Style to help turn business around, and her clients keep returning to the salons because they love the way they’re treated. Candice also uses social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to advertise and bring more business. The program at Elite helped her learn this foundation so she could help her businesses succeed!
Why Elite Academy of Cosmetology
When asked about why someone should attend Elite, Candice said:
My friends at hair school helped me so much with learning to use social media and it was just part of the whole reason my life changed at hair school. I want to be an educator and brand ambassador. My heart is in being an artistic director so getting a master cosmo education can help me get there. I went from having nothing to being able to buy a house with my fiance.
We were so thrilled to be part of Candice’s transformation, and we couldn’t be more proud of the career she has built for herself!
