Why Sleep Is Equally as Important as Exercise and Diet

When trying to lose weight or even just maintain a healthy one, it is crucial to recognize just how important sleep is when comparing it to diet and exercise. With this said, there are unfortunately still many people that are not getting enough sleep – in fact – around 30% of adults are getting less than six hours of sleep per night on average.

If you’re working hard at the gym and eating all the right foods but skimping out on sleep, you’re most likely not seeing the results that you want. Without enough shut-eye in your health routine, you will not only experience unwelcomed food cravings, but it can also impede on the progress that you were making in the gym.

This isn’t to say that diet and exercise aren’t important when trying to attain healthiness, but without sleep, progress may never be reached. Here are the reasons why sleep is just as important as diet and exercise.

Sleep vs. Exercise

We’ve all tried to power through a workout late at night or early in the morning even though we can barely keep our eyes open. Even when we do end up completing the workout, the results almost never go as well as planned, as we feel tired and lethargic almost the whole time. When we get less than 7 hours of sleep at night, we tend to shorten our workouts – or not even begin them in the first place. Not getting enough sleep can lead to a lack of motivation to get started and increases your fatigue throughout the workout, mainly because your hormones become unstable, impacting your energy levels.

Conversely, when we do get enough sleep it doesn’t only give us the drive and grit to power through the workout, but it gives us the energy to have a successful day complete with boosted concentration and dynamism. Nonetheless, sleep and exercise go hand in hand – without one, the other suffers. When you work out efficiently, it’s a known fact that it will help you sleep more soundly at night, and when you sleep efficiently, you will have a better, more invigorating workout.

Sleep vs. Diet

Getting enough ZZZs at night is also helpful when considering our food intake, not to mention the kinds of food that we want to eat as well. When we are only getting a shortened amount of sleep, we usually start to crave snack food, with sweet snacks being the particular culprits. This is because with restricted amounts of sleep, glucose levels begin to reach pre-diabetic levels, leaving us craving those infamous sugary treats.

There’s a physiological reason why those that are sleep-deprived have an increased appetite. Two important hunger hormones, ghrelin and leptin, are affected greatly by the amount of sleep that one gets. Ghrelin is released in the stomach that tells the brain when it is hungry, with levels being higher before eating and lower after eating. Leptin is released from fat cells and tells the brain when one is full.

Without adequate sleep, the body increases ghrelin production and lessens leptin, leaving you feeling desperate for food. In fact, of those that slept for shorter durations, the group presented a “14.9% higher ghrelin levels and 15.5% lower leptin levels than those who got adequate sleep.” It is important to note that short sleepers also had higher BMIs as well.

How to Get Better Sleep

The American Sleep Foundation recommends that those between ages 18 and 64 should get between 7 and nine hours of sleep every night, with the necessary amount increasing with age. Your sleep cycle will be unique to you but consider the following suggestions for getting better sleep in the future.

Improve Your Sleep Environment – Your bed sheets should give you enough room to stretch and rotate in a comfortable manner without leaving you tangled. If you find yourself waking up sore and groggy, try experimenting with different levels of firmness in your mattress, foam toppers, and pillows to provide the right amount of support for you.

Control Your Exposure to Light – The amount of light that you are exposed to impacts your levels of melatonin, which helps to regulate your sleeping cycle. This means that when it’s dark, your body will feel sleepier as melatonin increases. By cutting out excessive light right before bedtime, you can help your body feel the tiredness it needs to get a good night’s rest and wake up feeling energized.

Create a “Wind-Down” Routine – We all experience stress and anxiety to some extent due to external factors out of our control, ultimately alter our sleep quality for the worse. Be intentional about clearing your head before hopping into bed to reduce overstimulation of the brain and avoid a wandering mind during important times of needed rest.

People with atrial fibrillation (AFib) require treatment to control their heart rate, heart rhythm and coagulation.  It’s a serious but manageable condition, but it doesn’t mean you can’t keep on leading a full and active life. Self-care and spiritual wellness are important for any care management plan because they speak directly to the twin needs of physical and emotional health.

Emotional well-being can help bolster your recovery plan by keeping you in good spirits and enthusiastic about your life in general. In some cases, self-care serves the same objective as physical care management for AFib patients. Ultimately, it’s about following a healthy and happy lifestyle, which includes using common sense and making healthful decisions instead of indulging in negative behaviors that can exacerbate your condition.

Diet

High blood pressure is an epidemic that currently affects one in every three American adults. High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” because it is largely asymptomatic, which is why it is imperative to have your blood pressure regularly.  When monitoring blood pressure, you should taken at random times of the day, once a day, and record the readings.  Over the course of a month, most of the readings should be below 120 mmHg systolic blood pressure and 80 mmHg diastolic blood pressure.  If you or your loved ones suffer from high blood pressure, you should schedule a visit to see Dr. Cynthia, considered by her patients to be one of the best holistic cardiologists in Los Angeles.

There are many ways to treat high blood pressure, including lifestyle changes and/or medications. Below are some herbs and spices that can help lower your blood pressure:

  • Garlic – Garlic contains allicin, a substance which has antibacterial, antioxidant, lipid lowering and anti-hypertensive properties. Garlic has the ability to lower your blood pressure by helping your blood vessels to relax and dilate, which allows blood flow more freely in the body. Studies have proven that fresh garlic has more potent heart-protective properties than processed garlic. The recommended intake is four cloves of garlic (about 4 grams) a day to notice reduce blood pressure readings. You can add fresh garlic to a number of your favorite recipes. And if you simply can’t eat it or don’t like the taste of garlic, try supplement form of 500 mg daily.
  • Cardamom – Cardamom is a seasoning that comes from India and is often used in the foods of South Asia. A 2009 study published in the Indian Journal of Biochemistry & Biophysics analyzed the health effects of cardamom and found that participants given powdered cardamom daily for several months saw significant reductions in their blood pressure. You can include cardamom seeds or powder in spice rubs, in soups and stews, and even in baked goods for a special flavor and a positive health benefit.
  • Cinnamon – Cinnamon not only prevents heart disease, it can help treat diabetes. Consuming ¼ tsp. to 1 tsp. of cinnamon every day has been shown to lower blood pressure in patients with diabetes. Include more cinnamon in your diet by sprinkling it on your breakfast oats and in your coffee, for dinner try adding cinnamon to stir-fries, curries, and stews.
  • Curcumin – You may not have heard of curcumin before, but you have probably heard of turmeric, the spice that is best known as an ingredient in Indian curry and yellow mustard. Turmeric is a natural blood pressure reducer and cardiovascular spice that has been used for years. Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties that help lower blood pressure by lowering the excess platelet aggregation that occurs in sticky, clot-forming blood. Try cooking with turmeric or if you wish to take curcumin as a nutritional supplement, try 500 mg daily, but do not take if you have gallbladder disease, gallstones, and kidney stones.
  • Ginger – Ginger may help control blood pressure, as it has been shown to improve blood circulation and relax the muscles surrounding blood vessels. Commonly used in Asian foods, ginger is a very versatile ingredient. Chop, mince, or grate fresh ginger into stir-fries, soups, and noodle or vegetable dishes, or add it to desserts or tea for a refreshing taste.
  • Cayenne Pepper – The key compound in cayenne pepper is a substance called capsaicin, which is the main active ingredient in a number of over-the-counter “hot creams” for joint and muscle pain. Capsaicin creates the sensation of heat through a thermogenic effect that raises body temperature and boosts circulation in the area where it’s applied. It is also a natural blood pressure reducer and cardiovascular health supplement. Add cayenne pepper in cooking your meals once or twice a week to help lower your blood pressure.

Passionflower is believed to increased Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), a chemical that down regulates some brain activity, making you feel more relaxed.  Try one cup of passionflower tea 2-3 times daily or 20-40 drops of liquid extract per day.
  2. Kava kava is one of the most famous anti-anxiety herbs. Kava kava is more sedating and hypnotic than passionflower, so use with caution; some people find that it causes drowsiness or feeling sleepy. It has an interesting taste that almost numbs your mouth, and has a long tradition of ritual use in Polynesia as well as medicinal use for its sedative and pain-relieving properties. Try kava kava as a tea or extract about 3-4 times per week. However, if you have liver problems do not use kava kava, recent studies suggest that over-consumption may damage the liver.
  3. Lavender is effective at reducing irritability and anxiety, promoting relaxation, a sense of calmness and sleep. A 2010 multi-center double-blinded randomized study compared lavender oil to anti-anxiety medication lorazepam and found that both were as effective against generalized and persistent anxiety. While lavender can be consumed in a tea, it may work best as an essential oil, which also has no sedative effects. Try using the oil as an aromatherapy solution.
  4. Lemon Balm usually found in combination with other herbs, lemon balm also has anti-anxiety powers on its own. Use in aromatherapy, try 300-500 mg of dried lemon balm three times daily, or ¼ to 1 teaspoon of dried lemon balm herb in hot water for a tea 3 times a day.
  5. Turmeric is one of the best herbs to consume or your overall health and wellness. It contains high levels of antioxidants, which improve blood flow to the brain and also improve heart health. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and have a positive impact on depression. Turmeric can reduce stress and increase longevity of the brain and heart. Consume ¼ teaspoon a day of organic turmeric.
  6. Basil is a natural immune-boosting herb, high in nutrients that improve overall cognitive function and can help reduce high amounts of stress.
  7. L-theanine is a water-soluble amino acid found mainly in green tea and black tea and is also available as a supplement. Studies have found that l-theanine acts directly on the brain, helping reduce stress and anxiety without causing drowsiness. A typical cup of black tea contains only about 25 mg of l-theanine and green tea only about 8 mg. A cup of tea a day may be soothing and calming, but if you want a more potent effect you can try a supplement of 200 mg a day.
  8. Nutmeg is a relaxant spice, used in folk medicine to relieve anxiety and depression. A little o this spice goes a long way, so don’t overdo it, a pinch here and there is all you need.
