Early last week, Professional Builder magazine released the 2018 Housing Giants report ranking Creative Homes at 206 of builders named across the nation. President Nick Hackworthy addressed his team last Friday commenting, “This is a huge accomplishment for us, and I believe that there will continue to be opportunities for all of us to grow both in our roles and as a company. We have a lot to learn -  there will always be opportunities arising in which we can learn from. If you want it, go get it.”

Amidst exponential growth and change in the company at large, Hackworthy is confident in his team as the energy remains high and the Creative Homes team continues to win awards for both the quality of homes built, and the culture they foster at the office.

This is the first time Creative Homes has been named on this list.

Spring is finally here! The grass is turning green, the leaves are budding, and the breeze finally is warm enough to let in; however, as with any Minnesota spring, when the snow washes away, spring cleaning begins. Just be sure to clear your schedule and follow these tips to get yourself started.

Interior Maintenance

Although cleaning the exterior of your house can dramatically increase the curb appeal (and overall safety) of your home, the interior of your home is equally important. Start by making a high-energy playlist to make the time go faster and keep you motivated to finish. Spotify has great pre-made playlists to suit any music taste.

Clean the Floors - A clean floor makes for a clean home.  We recommend using BONA for hardwood, vinyl and laminate floors. Avoid using water, soap-based, or steam cleaners on your hardwood as it can compromise the integrity of the flooring.

Steam mops are a great option for tiled floors (and shower walls). If you want to go the extra mile, attach a round scrub brush to the end of a drill head to give your grout the ultimate cleanse with half the elbow grease.

Vacuum - You will need to move the furniture for this one - move the beds, couches, and dressers and vacuum to your heart's content. Be sure to empty the vacuum regularly to maximize your efforts. You will be amazed at how much pet hair, dust, and other treasures reside underneath your furniture.

Ongoing Safety Maintenance

Last but not least, don’t forget the monthly maintenance items to ensure your home stays safe for you and your family:

Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors -change batteries as needed

Ensure your fire extinguisher is up to date

Avoid overloading electrical circuits in all areas of the house. Use surge protectors where necessary

Ensure your dryer vent remains free of lint debris

Check/replace furnace filters (recommended every 30-90 days)

Exterior Maintenence

Clear the Gutters – Your gutters reroute excess rain water away from your home. Be sure that they are free of debris, and intact at all times to prevent water damage and leaks. The downspout should reroute the water away from the foundation to prevent damage to the concrete.

Clean the Windows – Giving your windows a quick exterior wash can give your home a quick facelift for the spring, and enhances the view into or out of any room. Be sure to clean your windows on a cloudy day to avoid streaking. In doing so, your cleanser won't dry before you can wipe it down. Don't forget to vacuum out your window sills while you’re at it!

Plan Landscaping - Plan your landscaping so that the ground continues to slope away from your home. The water should be able to drain away freely without any blockages or barriers. Need some tips? Heins Nursery can help you out and are great to work with!

Begin Irrigation –  Prior to running your irrigation system, ensure that all sprinkler heads are turned away from your home as excessive water damage may create water intrusion issues in your home.

Deep Clean Your Appliances

Refrigerator - Clean out those spills that may have gotten away from you in the fridge using an all-purpose cleaner. Check the expiration dates on your condiments while you're in there!

Microwave - Throw a mixture of ¼ cup white distilled vinegar and 1 cup of water in the microwave and turn on high until steam appears. Use a soft dishcloth to wipe away the grime.

Oven - Most ovens should have a self-cleaning option which literally bakes off all the food particles in the oven leaving you with ashes when it’s complete. Give your oven a thorough wipe down when the self-clean is done. (Make sure you open the windows when you do this as it can get smelly.)

Dishwasher - Soak your dishwasher filter in warm soapy water for 10-15 minutes, and lightly scrub to remove any remaining food particles. Place a cup of vinegar into the empty dishwasher and run a hot rinse cycle to deodorize and degrease it.

Range Hood - Wipe down the inside of the range hood gently with some vinegar and water. Replace the filter if needed. Be thorough on this one as the grease buildup can impose a fire hazard overtime.

While owning a home brings an enormous amount of freedom to any homeowner, it also comes with quite a bit of responsibility especially after the snow melts. Spring cleaning can be a daunting task, yet is essential to maintaining a happy and healthy household. Find a great playlist and some extra motivation to turn this daunting task into an exhilarating, and ultimately satisfying day.

Members of the Creative Homes Team recently attended the third annual 2018 Hearts and Housing Gala at the J.W. Marriott Minneapolis Mall of America presented by the  BATC Housing First Minnesota Foundation. With over 500 attendees clad in their best derby attire, they collectively raised more than $200,000 through both a silent and live auction and more than $50,000 to support future efforts of the foundation. Attendees enjoyed the night while sipping on mint juleps and dancing to the High & Mighty band.

The BATC Housing First Minnesota Foundation raises money to help create safe, quality, and affordable housing for communities around the area. This year’s donations will be put towards Avivo, a residential addiction treatment program in Minnesota that allows mother’s in addiction treatment to continue living with their children aged 0-17, and the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans which provides veterans who may be experiencing homelessness or other life crises housing, employment, and other legal services.

Creative Homes was a proud sponsor for the event.

Design Trends - Kitchen and Master Bathroom EditionTrends, trends, trends. They are the very subject that seems to be ever-changing and completely unpredictable. Our design team is often asked questions like “What is trending now?” or “What will be trending in the future?” and sometimes even, “What was trending that isn’t trending anymore?”. While all of these questions are relevant, and valuable to any new homeowner, I challenge you to ask yourself, “How can I choose trends in my home while still allowing my home to feel uniquely designed to fit my lifestyle?” This week we are discussing the most popular trends in the kitchen and the master bathroom.
Trends in the Kitchen
The center point of any home is indefinitely the kitchen. I would bet that most of us spend quite a bit of time in the kitchen whether we are grabbing a quick snack, entertaining a large group of guests, or groggily drinking our morning cup of joe. From the cabinets, down to the little details, your kitchen is the focal point (and maybe even the unspoken meeting ground) of your home and should be treated as such in its design.
Trend 1 - Shaker-Style Cabinetry

Shaker-style cabinets will forever be a trend in my book. They contribute exceptional clean lines and crisp edges to the overall aesthetic of the kitchen. Shaker cabinets are often paired with white paint to enhance their overall appearance. Although white is indefinitely a trend as of now, it will continue to be a classic way to make the kitchen feel airy and bright. Using glass in the center panel of the cabinetry doors is also a great way to turn those beautiful dishes into part of your decor. The fresh and modern detailing of shaker cabinetry is sure to surpass any small momentary design fads for years to come.

Trend 2 - Extended Cabinetry

Cabinets that stretch to the ceiling are a great way to extend the visual height of your kitchen while significantly increasing the magnitude of storage space in your kitchen. The higher cabinets lend themselves wonderfully to store those unique pieces that you may not need access to as often. Pop frosted glass into the center panels of these upper cabinets with a small light inside of the cabinet to add ambient lighting in your kitchen. What was once a monotonous and unused space in the kitchen, is now a perfect way to store your delicate serving platters and china - the more, the merrier friends.

Trend 3 - Veined Quartz Countertops

We are RAVING over light quartz countertops which are intentionally cut to display big, bold, and beautiful veins. Selecting a veined countertop piece adds profound dimension and a sense of movement to the space. Any large organic pattern on a countertop such as this can and will contrast beautifully with the geometric nature of most backsplashes. Our Meadow Valley model admirably exhibits this. Paired with large sconces overhead, a different color cabinetry below the island, and a glossy subway tile backsplash, the veins of the countertop bring subtle flair into the kitchen space without overwhelming the eye.

Trend 4 - Apron Front Sinks

My personal favorite trend - the rise of the apron front sink. A simple white-enameled single bowl apron front sink immediately brings that farmhouse feel to any kitchen. Did I mention they are incredibly practical? A single bowl allows for more space to hand wash those larger pots, pans, and cookie sheets while the apron front reaches to the edge of the counter space, henceforth taking out the 2-3 inches of countertop that allowed for water pooling with a traditional under mount sink. This sink just screams modern farmhouse and exceptional utility in all directions my friends.

Trends in the Master Bathroom
Your master bathroom is exclusively for YOU to enjoy and should be designed as such. If anything, it is a place to rejuvenate and pamper yourself at the end of a long day - self-care at its finest. Although we may not be able to bring the spa to us, we can indefinitely design our master bathroom to be a haven in and of itself.
Trend 1 - Natural Elements

The easiest way to create a spa-like feel in your master bath is to incorporate natural-looking elements wherever possible. Using a wood-grained tile as the bathroom floor-tile can help to create an outdoorsy retreat feeling within the luxury of your own home. Opting for lighter and cleaner colors on the walls can create a sense of serenity in the space as well.

Trend 2 - Strong Patterned Floors

For some added pizazz, consider using a strong pattern on the floor. The master suite in our Meadow Valley Model boasts a vintage-tile floor to foster a bold and luxurious feel to the space. The tile is paired with more simple features elsewhere preventing it from being overwhelming while still allowing the space to be exciting and..

A Look Back on the 2018 Spring ParadeWell my friends, Spring Parade 2018 is officially in the books and with that, comes much excitement, and many new opportunities! On Monday morning, our office was buzzing with all of the new ideas and feedback we received from everyone who came to visit our models in the parade! I’m convinced the coffee did indeed taste better, and the sun was actually shining a bit brighter but maybe that’s just me.

Echoing throughout the feedback we received across all of our models, was the attention to detail and the quality of construction displayed throughout our work. Of course, none of this could have been done without our fearless Neighborhood Builders, and our Customer Care Team who continue to keep a watchful eye on all of our new construction each and every week.

Each day, they are actively working alongside our wonderful trade partners to make sure each nail, stud, and drop of paint is placed exactly where it should be according to our plans. Not only does each model display this attention to detail, but each home we build does as well – the quality of construction doesn’t just stop with the models.

Those who walked through our homes also noticed the consistent functionality of our floor plans. Although each floor plan is unique in its own way, each one is designed in a way that is effective for families of all sizes. We believe your home should reflect your lifestyle in whatever way that may be and focus on paying attention to our buyer’s ideas, visions, and dreams throughout our design process.

Many people specifically noticed the exceptional mudroom in the back hall at the Quick Move-In home in Territory. It features a wonderful built-in bench with hooks and storage underneath for plenty of shoes, coats, hats, and scarves! Additionally, right off of the mudroom is the laundry room which is perfect for throwing those muddy socks where they belong the minute they come in the house!

Another wonderful space featured in a few of our models is a 3-season porch. This specific porch that is pictured is nestled in our Lake Ridge Crossing Model. I mean, talk about a versatile space that can be dressed up or dressed down for any season, or occasion! It comes right off of the dining room and leads onto the deck, which if you ask me, just screams barbeque in its nature. This space is the bee's knees. If you haven't seen it, feel free to stop by for a showing! (Model hours can be found here)

The wine cellar in our Miller Farms Model received a lot of love from everyone who visited. The detailing in the cedar shelving is incredible! It can hold more than 400 bottles of wine! (Who needed a liquor store anyways when you can just take a small jaunt down the stairs?!)  Did I mention it is a walk in?!

This wine cellar is fit for even the most prestigious wine connoisseur and is definitely the highlight of the great room in the basement as it is the first thing you notice when you walk down the stairs- or if you happen to already be downstairs, the wet bar is only a few steps away. It’s incredible.

Overall, we had an amazing Spring Parade at Creative. We are so grateful for every single individual who stopped by! We truly do hear and value your feedback and insights! We are so excited for all of the upcoming projects we have going on over here and cannot wait to see what the future holds! After all, though the Parade may be over, it really was just the beginning of something new.
