I LOVE capturing emotions in my family portraiture… whether I’m spending a couple of hours with a family at their home, walking through the countryside, visiting a stately home or their local park…. it’s always an honour to capture some beautiful moments.

When I’m asked to photograph small, beautifully planned family gatherings my heart does a little merry dance because I get to witness some of the most wonderful moments between family members and capture them forever. It was a great pleasure to photograph Vera’s special birthday at the beautiful Coniston Hall Hotel. Vera’s 90th birthday was simply fabulous. The bond between each generation was infectious…made extra special by the nine great grandchildren too.  The speeches were lovely – made even more special by one of the grandchildren making his own speech about his great grandma…there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! You can see this part of the story below…

Here are just a few memories from a wonderful day x

I’m regularly asked to photograph extended families together. I get rather excited when I do, because I love capturing the connections between grandparents, parents and grandchildren. This portrait photography session was just wonderful.  I’ve known Julie for a while now and was delighted when she approached me to photograph her daughter, son in law and their two gorgeous children. We had a wonderful day and Julie is now a proud owner of a lovely story telling frame and a beautiful keepsake album.

Lister Park was the venue for this October family portrait session. The autumn leaves were stunning, the sun shone all morning and the children loved playing hide and seek amongst the trees. I have selected some favourite images to share and I hope you like them and feel the connections between this lovely family.

I adore this image. The little boy played with this stick for a while on the shoot and his expression of excitement really melted my heart.

When I took this last photo, I wanted the little boy to be captured as a small part of this huge landscape, made grander by the lovely curve of the stone railings. He looks so happy in his thoughts… priceless.

If you have been meaning to photograph your extended family together but have not got around to it, then please give me a call on 07947 160185 or email memories@ceciliacostello.co.uk and I’ll be delighted to chat through your thoughts and get your portrait session booked in the diary.

Portraits by the lake | St Ives Estate, Bingley

Last year I met this great family for their portrait photography session at St Ives Estate, Bingley. This “Portrait by the Lake” photography session is a little bit different to my usual two to three hour family photoshoots. Set in and around the stunning St Ives Estate, Bingley this portrait session lasts one hour.  The two girls live away from home and had come back for the weekend and their parents wanted me to capture their individual personalities and the bond between them and their brother.  Rory was a cheeky, full of fun young lad and his sisters had great senses of humour and clearly got along really well. They chose a large story telling frame with six black & white images in to hang in their lounge. Black & white photographs just enhance that timeless feel.

We had a lovely hour, having lots of laughs and I hope you like this selection of favourites..

On this beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, I’m delighted to be able to share the story of this gorgeous family portrait photography session I did in November last year at the iconic Fountains Abbey, Ripon. This is a venue I’ve wanted to photograph at for years and it made a perfect day out for my clients, who live in London and had come to visit family for the weekend.

When we met outside the cafe, Ed & Henrietta made me feel so at ease.  We spent a couple of hours strolling through the grounds exploring the ruined Abbey with their daughters and also their eldest tried her hand at a little bit of map reading too!  Henrietta was wearing the most gorgeous blue boots and her little girl had yellow wellies on…I knew I had to capture these together and imagine my delight when they both stood on this gate… perfect mother and daughter photograph.  Wherever you look at Fountains Abbey you see beautiful things and as Autumn is my favourite season I was in heaven with the colours of all the trees. I loved capturing this family story and below I’ve shared some favourite images which I hope you enjoy too.

This little girl was a bundle of joy to photograph on this three generation portrait photography session in the summer. I was delighted when I was contacted by Eileen – she had won one of my portrait photography prizes in the silent auction that I donate twice a year to the fabulous Bradford Cancer Support charity.

When I arrived, on this lovely sunny day, we started the morning with a cuppa (as always) whilst I got to know the family a little bit more before I started taking the photographs. This gorgeous giggly little girl was accompanied by her parents and grandparents and we spent around three hours together photographing inside and out, playing games, reading lots of lovely books and spotting the wildlife outside.

When I’m photographing families, I always seek to capture the family emotions and connections to tell their unique story. Here you will see the bond between the little girl and her parents, and also the heart warming connection with her grandparents too… I hope you enjoy their story, thanks x

Maddie the dancer | Beautiful golden hour portraits | Bingley

This year I’ve had the pleasure of photographing two dancers in their own environment: no pressure to have that perfect pose, straightest leg or best ballet bun. I wanted to explore these two wonderful dancers being themselves and to produce some beautiful, natural and timeless portraits that they could treasure. It was important to me on both portrait sessions to work with the elements (and boy did we do that with the first shoot!).  The first shoot was with Emily in the snow (remember the horrendous winter of 2017?). If you didn’t manage to see the photos from Emily’s portrait session you can skip onto this link here.

With Maddie, I wanted to explore capturing images in the golden hour. The golden hour, for those that don’t know, is the hour just before the sun sets…so with our glorious long summer nights it was a perfect time to head outside and have FUN. Which we did…lots of it!

Maddie is an incredibly graceful dancer, full of fun and amazingly flexible. I wanted her personality to shine through the photos so I asked her Mum to bring along a variety of dance outfits that she would feel really happy in and more importantly allow some self expression. So donned with three pairs of pointe shoes (red, blue and pink), a blue feather boa, funky skull hat,  floaty dresses and scarves we set off on our little adventure. The location is an area that I’d pinpointed over a year ago however I couldn’t reach it due to the snow for Emily’s shoot. It worked our brilliantly though as the light in the golden hour was beautifully diffused by the trees.

I’ve selected some of our favourite images to share and I really hope that you love them as much as we do. Working with the golden hour posed a number of technical difficulties to start with however after a bit of practice and my Canon 5Dmk3 set to manual I soon got the hang of it and managed to capture a few dreamy images.
