The psychoactive effects of cannabis are well documented, and it has suffered greatly with the stigma surrounding it as a recreational drug. Anti marijuana campaigns have been run since the early 20th century, with infamous propaganda films such as ‘Reefer madness’. Recently however cannabis has been able to shrug off the negative connotations as new research and development proves ever further the many beneficial qualities it provides.
The compound everyone is talking about is ‘CBD’, which has been proven to support the body in a variety of ways from helping with pain management, anxiety, immune system and much more. But what is the science behind this and what sets CBD apart from it’s psychoactive brother, THC?
The Science behind CBD
Discovered in the early 1990s, the endocannabinoid system is found in mammals and is responsible for complex actions on many of our bodily functions. Endocannabinoids are produced within the body. That’s right, your body produces the same type of compounds found in cannabis! The endocannabinoids we produce interact with our cannabinoid receptors. There are 2 types of cannabinoid receptor located throughout the body and central nervous system. Not only do these receptors respond to our own endocannabinoids but they also react to plant cannabinoids such as CBD and THC.
When triggered, these receptors have shown to control appetite, pain sensation, immune function, anxiety, cell growth and many more. There are many studies and comprehensive results to support these claims.
Hemp oil or CBD oil?
You may well have seen hemp oil for sale before, but there is a big difference between hemp oil and CBD oil. Hemp oil is derived from hemp seeds that have been pressed to extract the oil. This oil contains very minimal amounts of CBD, usually less than 25 parts per million.

CBD oil however is taken directly from cannabis flowers, leaves and stalks that contains up to 15 percent CBD (150,000 ppm). The extraction process is completely different and is what sets the CBD content apart.

That isn’t to say that hemp oil doesn’t have its uses. It has high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 making it ideal for cooking and as a food supplement. It can also be great as a lotion helping keep skin moisturised. On an industrial scale, hemp oil has the potential to be used to create different forms of plastic, paints and even bio-diesel.

Hemp oil however does not have the same potential health benefits as CBD oil.


CBD and THC

Both CBD and THC are products of the hemp plant (not the seeds). CBD and THC do share similar traits, but the key difference is that where THC produces strong psychoactive effects, CBD does not. CBD and THC are both cannabinoids, which as discussed earlier are compounds which interact with our own endocannabinoid system to promote wellbeing. There are also other cannabinoids found within hemp, including cannabinol (CBN), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC) as well as many others. All of these cannabinoids have beneficial effects but THC is the only one to produce a strong psychoactive effect.

Will CBD become commonplace in sport?

In 2018 CBD was officially removed by the World Anti-doping Agency from its list of prohibited substances. THC however remains on the list which does raise concerns for those who use CBD.
Whilst the ban on CBD has been lifted the continued ban on THC means that many users of CBD oil extracted from cannabis plants run the risk of breaking the rules as plant derived CBD oil contains trace amounts of THC.
Synthetic cannabinoids are also on the banned list, however synthetic CBD does not come under the same classification.
It is a great step forward for the athletes who already use CBD as a supplement as part of their diet and recovery and we may see more athletes turning to CBD in the future.
WHO are WADA?
The World Anti-Doping Agency is an international organisation created to develop a doping free world of sport and competition, whilst furthering scientific research and education for the sporting community. They are funded by the International Olympic Committee and also receive funding from various governments around the world.
Their list of prohibited substances is updated annually but they have a core code which is designed to bring consistency to the world of sports and outline a standard set of rules on anti-doping.


ATHLETES ARE ALREADY USING CBD

Many athletes are open about their use of CBD and how they have integrated it into their training, diet and recovery. The world of UFC is perhaps the first to openly embrace CBD, with one of the biggest stars Nate Diaz declaring how CBD helps him prepare and recover after a fight.

“It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It’ll make your life a better place.” This was Diaz speaking about CBD following his fight against Conor McGregor at UFC 202.
CBD has also made its way to the NFL with players such as Ebenezer Ekuban and Eugene Monroe both coming out in support of the supplement. Speaking about his recovery from injury, Monroe told the Washington Post, “This pain is never going away. My body is damaged. I have to manage it somehow. Managing it with pill was slowly killing me. Now I’m able to function and be extremely efficient by figuring out how to use different formulations of cannabis.”

Monroe has been very vocal on the NFL changing its standards on THC and CBD insisting that cannabis derived medication is a better option than opioids.

“It's time for the NFL to change its archaic standards to better protect its players. For too long, I've watched my teammates and good friends battle with opioid addiction and leave the game with a long road still ahead; it's time to make a change”.

What Are Potential CBD Therapeutic Applications for Pain?

Not all pain can be treated the same way. There are many different triggers for pain and the specific experience is different for everyone. There are 3 main types of pain: neuropathic, nociceptive and the general “other”. Neuropathic pain is associated directly with the nervous system, nociceptive results from damage to tissue and the more general “other” type of pain has no clear source, perhaps stemming from neurological dysfunction.
Many people using CBD now use it to treat a multitude of pain types, however research is currently underway to prove the effectiveness of CBD to combat specific types of pain.

CBD for Chronic pain

Most interesting is the amount of patients actively switching to CBD over conventional treatments. In one particular study, patients who were taking CBD as part of the study carried on with the CBD therapy even after the study was completed. Research into CBD and its effect on cancer is still ongoing but there is great potential.

Determining Correct CBD Dosage for Pain

It is however reassuring to know that there is no lethal dose of CBD and that there are no serious side effects at any dosage level. This means that patients are free to find a level that works for them safe in the knowledge they won’t do themselves any harm.

CBD Dosage for Pain

When dosing for treatment of a chronic or constant pain, the required level of CBD will be higher than that of other illnesses. Typically when starting out with CBD therapy it is best to begin at about 5 to 10 milligrams a day and building that dosage slowly over time. Do keep in mind that the dose will need to increase for effective relief.

The Basic CBD Oil Dosage Guidelines:

Start with a low dose, around 5 to 10 milligrams.

Go slow and maintain that dosage for at least two to three days. Make an increase every few days, up to 25 mg, then 50 mg and then 100 mg. You can divide these doses during the day. Remember that CBD works best by building up over time.

Keep a journal and monitor your mood, your cravings, quality of sleep and check for interactions with other medication. Compare your pain before commencing with the treatment against the pain during.

Consult with your doctor. This can’t be stressed highly enough but always consult with your doctor, especially if you are considering moving away from conventional painkillers. There are some drug interactions that your doctor may want to discuss with you before you start CBD therapy.


Why Do You Need Dosage Guidelines?

Getting the right CBD dosage for you isn’t an exact science are there are so many variables. Starting with a low dosage will allow your body to acclimate to CBD. You may some mild side effects such as mild stomach aches and a dry mouth. If you start with a low dosage however this will help eliminate the chance of this happening.

Maintaining the dosage before increasing is also important. You may not feel an effect, but CBD does not always take effect immediately. In some cases it may even take up with 30 days. If you don’t feel any relief after a few days, try upping your dosage slightly. Repeat this process until you start to feel relief.

Humanity has tried to find a cure for aging for millennia, with legends such as the fountain of youth promising a way to reverse the effects of aging. There are two reasons why humanity has pushed to fight aging for so long, one of which is perhaps quite vain in the pursuit of beauty, whereas the other is for immortality.

Current research into anti-again is expansive but still inconclusive. The immune system contains two different types of immunity mechanism, cell-mediated immunity and humoral immunity. 1. What is CBD?
Cannabinoidol (CBD) is one of over 85 compounds found in cannabis that belongs to a class of molecules called cannabinoids. The most well-known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The human body contains its own endocannabinoid system (ECS), which houses various cannabinoid receptors. The chemical compounds that interact with the ECS support memory, mood, brain reward systems, and energy balance. The ECS system has also been found to be beneficial in combating depression, anxiety, increasing appetite, and create feelings of well-being. CBD naturally acts on the ECS system’s signals to increase receptor function and flow, with no psychoactive reactions in the body.


2. What are some uses for CBD?
Research for CBD are as follows:

There is a lingering question surrounding CBD and that is whether a tolerance builds up over time. As CBD is a cannabinoid the same as THC it would be natural to assume that it has many of the same tendencies including building up a tolerance. The truth is that CBD and THC share a few traits but they are in fact very different.

There are major differences between CBD and THC. CBD has become very popular for its ability to treat anxiety, which THC is known to trigger. CBD also doesn’t trigger psychoactivity, which THC infamously does.

Another significant difference between the two is the risk of tolerance. The main issue with THC is that when used for medicinal or recreational purposes there is a slow increase in tolerance. The initial dose will eventually become ineffective when taken regularly. CBD does not seem to trigger a tolerance. Oddly enough, it seems to have the opposite effect, a bizarre phenomenon called reverse tolerance.


How Does Tolerance Develop in the First Place?

Tolerance develops most commonly with drugs that bind directly to our endocannabinoid receptors (THC being an example). Long term use leads to an internal response and our bodies adapt to the continual presence of the compound and as such a higher dosage is required to achieve the same effect.

Research has shown that long term THC use leads to increased tolerance. THC binds strongly to the cannabinoid receptor CB1 which is responsible for the psychoactive effect. Over time THC reduces the number of available cannabinoid receptors. This was support by a study conducted in 2012 which showed that chronic THC users had fewer cannabinoid receptors than non-users. After a break from THC the same users were able to return to lower dosages and their cannabinoid receptor levels had returned to normal.

 

How Does Reverse Tolerance Work?

Just as the name suggests, reverse tolerance is the opposite of tolerance. Continued use of a substance bring tolerance levels down and the user needs less of the substance to achieve the desired effect. Most substances cause people to experience increased tolerance level. Everything from pharmaceuticals, nicotine, alcohol and hard drugs like cocaine and methamphetamines. In some rare cases with alcohol the opposite is experienced due to severe liver damage.

There are only limited studies into the tolerance of CBD but the general consensus is that there is little to no risk of developing a tolerance. This is because CBD does not technically bind to any one cannabinoid receptor which eliminates the problem of tolerance. CBD promotes increased receptor activity unlike THC, which reduces cannabinoid receptors over time. Other receptors such as GABA receptors and NMDA receptors also respond to CBD and have also been shown to play a part in reverse tolerance.

Personal Anecdotes about CBD and Tolerance

There are some personal reports online where people claim to have experienced CBD tolerance when taking it for anxiety. On closer inspection however some of these complaints were down to users struggling to find a high-quality source of CBD oil.

There is however something to be aware of, called CBD saturation. This is often found in users taking CBD for epilepsy. After long-term CBD use the users may begin to experience seizures again. Common sense would dictate at that point that a higher dosage may be needed, but there is evidence to suggest that the opposite may be the answer and a lower dose or a simply a break from CBD could help restore its effectiveness.

The truth is that more research needs to be conducted, however in the meantime users have been able to find their own solutions with great results.

A Natural Medicine For Almost Anything
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the future and the benefits of CBD are tremendous.
Because of this plant compound’s numerous health benefits, it continues to sweep the nation, despite the politics behind getting this natural medicine to ill people.
Cannabis has been stigmatized for decades, but scientists and society cannot deny that the plant’s active ingredients, known as Cannabinoids, provide a natural remedy to a host of health issues. While CBD, extracted from the cannabis plant, is structurally similar to THC, part of the allure is that it won’t get you high. CBD extracted from industrialized hemp contains less than 0.3 percent THC so the benefits of CBD have nothing to do with getting high.
CBD is now the most researched cannabinoid on the market and rightly so because the studies go back to the 1940s proving its effectiveness on the nervous and immune systems, with no toxicity, side effects, nor psycho-activity.
Cannabis is known to have 85+ different cannabinoids, many of them potentially having health benefits.
“Cannabinoids promote homeostasis at every level of biological life, from the sub-cellular to the organism, and perhaps to the community and beyond,” writes NORML, a foundation that works to reform marijuana laws.
According to research, one of the benefits of CBD is that cannabinoids synergize and help support humans’ built-in Endocannabinoid System (ECS). It was in 1992 that scientists discovered that the ECS plays a direct role in homeostasis, which regulates every metabolic process in the body, such as pain sensation, appetite, temperature regulation, stress reactivity, immune function, and sleep, as well as other processes. Even more interesting is that muscle and fat tissue also utilize these receptors to control their processes.
So basically CBD communicates with our body’s main command center to keep things running as they should. Pretty amazing.
While the government has arguably made selling CBD quite difficult, the US Department of Health and Services ironically patented cannabinoids in 2001.
Patent 6,630,507 reads:
Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, … age-related, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases.
The FDA and DEA refuse to change their stance on cannabis. “Naturally, this shows a certain amount of hypocrisy that there is ‘no accepted medical use’ for cannabis according to federal law,” Sam Mendez, an intellectual property and public policy lawyer who serves as the executive director of the University of Washington’s Cannabis Law & Policy Project recently told the Denver Post.  “And yet here you have the very same government owning a patent for, ostensibly, a medical use for marijuana.”
Politics aside, let’s look at just nine of the myriad benefits of CBD.


1. Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder caused by unusual nerve cell activity in the brain. Each year, about 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with this condition. Many turn to mind-numbing medications, brain surgeries, and invasively implanted electrical stimulation devices, with little to no relief.
Yet, 20 years of research has shown that CBD has anti-seizure activity, and has been used successfully to treat drug-resistant, epileptic children with no side effects.
“CBD oil is also really good option for people with seizures, because you want a method of delivery they can’t choke on. As an oil, it can be rubbed on the gums and under the tongue,” adds Payton Curry, the founder of Flourish Cannabis, and a huge proponent of CBD. Curry views cannabis as a vegetable, and uses everything from the bud to the rootstock to maximize its non-psychoactive properties.


2. Depression
These days, just thinking of the future of health care system in this country and the assaults on our environment is enough to get a person down and out.  
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, in any given year, persistent depressive disorder PDD, affects approximately 1.5 percent of the U.S. population ages 18 and older. That’s about 3.3 million American adults.
In 2015, an estimated 16.1 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.
CBD has shown to have antidepressant-like actions, enhancing both serotonergic and glutamate cortical signaling through a 5-HT1A receptor-dependent mechanism.


3. Anxiety
We live in a Xanax-addled society. Anxiety disorders today affect 18.1 percent of adults in the United States, which equates to approximately 40 million adults, between the ages of 18 to 54.
One of CBD’s most promising implications is in the realm of anti-anxiety. Studies show that CBD can positively impact behavior and reduce psychological measures of stress and anxiety in conditions such as PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.
CBD also significantly reduced cognitive impairment and discomfort in speech performance, and significantly decreased angst surrounding public speaking.
Even some pet owners have reported that using CBD oil on their dogs has helped calm down their dog, writes Gunhee Park, Co-Founder of Ministry of Hemp.
While more research is needed to illustrate optimal dosage for anti-anxiety, consider this an opportunity to experiment and learn what works for you.  


4. Oxidative Stress
One of the benefits of CBD is combating oxidative stress. Today, chronic disease is on the rise like never before, with oxidative stress playing a significant causative role. Oxidative stress occurs when the body has too many free radicals and can’t counteract the damage. People fall prey when eating a nutrient deficient diet or when they experience an onslaught of toxins and the body can’t keep up and detox, causing more symptoms of disease.  
Oxidative stress is associated with a number of ailments including neurodegenerative diseases, heart disease, gene mutations, and cancer.
How amazing that CBD is particularly beneficial in the treatment of oxidative stress-associated diseases of the CNS, because cannabinoids’ ability to cross the blood brain barrier and exert their antioxidant effects in the brain.


5. Anti-inflammatory
Chronic low-level inflammation can severely erode your health; the silent lurker contributes to at least seven of the ten leading causes of mortality in the United States — which include heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and nephritis.
While real organic food and proper nutrition should be the base of any anti-inflammatory protocol, CBD has shown to significantly suppress chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing dependency or tolerance.

In a published study in the scientific journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
CBD was found to:
Stimulate genes and proteins that enhance the breakdown and oxidation of fat.
Increase the number and activity of mitochondria, which increases the body’s ability to burn calories.
Decrease the expression of proteins involved in lipogenesis (fat cell generation).
Help induce fat browning.

8. Sleep
Not sleeping can wreak havoc on your psyche and physique. According to the American Sleep Association, 50-70 million U.S. adults have a sleep disorder today.
Evidence suggests that Hemp oil can improve quality of sleep and reduce anxiety. I can attest. One study found that CBD blocked anxiety-induced REM sleep suppression, resulting in better quality of sleep. Another study found that the oil reduced participants’ cortisol levels, which are linked to anxiety and stress in the body.
When it comes to doses for treatment, Gunhee writes that CBD dosing experiments have shown that small doses of CBD have an “active” effect, meaning it actually helps you stay active and focused while interestingly, large dosages have the opposite effect: sedation.


9. Addiction
One of the greatest benefits of CBD is in combating addiction. How ironic that we can use a compound belonging to a Schedule 1 Drug (marijuana) to stop the addiction of other narcotics.
CBD is thought to modulate various neuronal circuits involved in drug addiction. A limited number of preclinical studies suggest that CBD may have therapeutic properties on opioid, cocaine, and psychostimulant addictions. One of the most promising application is using CBD to curb the habits of cigarette smokers.
CBD can even be effective for the treatment of cannabis withdrawal syndrome and certainly helped me kick Xanax.
Many of these could replace synthetic drugs that have flooded the market and allow patients and customers to use a natural non addictive plant compound as a remedy.
“But then again, maybe that’s the exact reason why progress has been so slow … approval of CBD as a legitimate supplement and drug would be a significant blow to big pharmaceutical companies,”

Despite the political roadblocks, CBD has proven time and time again to be an incredible natural medicine for many illnesses.
