One of my most hectic times of the year is Fall but is hands down my favorite time of year!  And that’s because it’s when all of my clients book their Family Photo Session. I am always thrilled to see each smiling face and revel in just how much the children have grown from year to year.

I take a laid back approach to family sessions.  We pick a lovely outdoor location with lavish fall color, consult on a color scheme for each family member’s outfit  and then we play. That’s right. We do very little posing. I encourage the parents to play with their children and out of that play; I can capture the most memorable images.

One of my most playful families is the L family.  I’ve been documenting their young family for a few years now and I can always count on them to fully embrace their Fall Family Play/Photo session.  Please have a look.

I truly treasure working with first time parents.  The joy they experience with welcoming their first child in to the world always makes my heart sing.  Baby M and her family were no exception!

Baby M’s mom and I talked several times to design a perfectly designed session.  We selected cream and beige tones with just a few hints of muted green to ensure that each images would match with their nursery and overall home décor.  We even worked olive branches to many of the sets in an effort to celebrate the family’s strong Greek heritage.

My favorite part of the session, however, is that Baby M’s grandmother was featured throughout the session.  This grandmother was thrilled to photographed with her namesake granddaughter and I enjoyed capturing all of their joyous smiles.

Please have a look through this special gallery.

It was a pleasure to work with Baby Cora’s family from start to finish.  Mom and Dad knew right away that they wanted to create custom wall art for their home.  So we designed their custom newborn session with the end in mind.

Baby Cora’s parents held their consultation at my residential studio in Bethesda where we discussed colors and selected props.  Then my favorited thing happened. Mom had brought along several handmade heirloom quilts from her Grandmother and asked if we could incorporate them.  Of course we can! These special details really add to the beauty of the art and make the images just that much more special.

We featured these beautiful quilts in several setups  during the session and the images are simply stunning. Please have a look.

The joy and wonder of first time parents always overwhelms me and this lovely couple was no exception.  They were thrilled to welcome their new baby girl in to the world and I was honored to photograph her.  At 21 days new, this sweet girl  slept through almost her entire session.  We did catch one or two peeks of hew bright and alert eyes though.  These are some of my favorite images from her session

I absolutely adore the Morris Arboretum nestled in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia.  I’ll visit any chance that I’m in town.  And when I was called up to shoot this beautiful young family, I knew that it would be the perfect location.   Once again, this stunning setting did not disappoint.

I’ve been photographing Steve, Lily and Nora for a long time now.  They are such a vibrant and fun family and this occasion was extra special because we were marking baby Nora’s first birthday.  We set up for the birthday shoot right in the English Rose Garden and don’t you know it, the skies opened up with heavy rain.  That’s okay though because with a gorgeous setting and a willing family, beautiful images can still be captured.

Baby Nora thoroughly enjoyed playing in the rain and strolling through the gorgeous gardens.  Eventually, the rain cleared and we did have a chance to capture a beautiful family play session on a blanket. Nora even showed off her new walking skills.

All in all, we had a beautiful family photo session and caught some wonderful images to mark Nora’s first birthday.

Feast your eyes on this lovely and memorable session…

Welcome to the world sweet baby Nolan!

Every now and again I get a call from an out of town family requesting that I travel to them for a Newborn shoot.  When Baby Nolan’s family called, I just could not resist.  Their story is so very touching and I was simply drawn to them.  They are the kindest and most loving new parents.  I can’t think of a more appropriate blessing for these two than a sweet baby boy who shares a birthday with his grandfather who passed away a few years back.

Because I was so drawn to the sweetness of Mom and Dad, I was certain that baby Nolan would be a joy and he did not disappoint.   Have a look at this beautiful family…

This gorgeous family of four welcomed their beautiful baby daughter, Amelia in February and I finally got them in to the studio last week.  What a treat!  I know that there’s a myth out there that newborn photographs need to be done within 14 days.  Just look at Amelia’s gorgeous images and you’ll see that it just isn’t true.  Your newborn session should be held when you’re ready and you shouldn’t feel rushed.

Amelia was adorable and a dream to work with.  We had such a fun time watching big brother Gavin care for his sister and Mom and Dad were all smiles as they held their sweet baby girl for photos.  I’m most excited that I get to watch this family grow and change over the next year as they selected my “First Year” package.  I can’t wait to see Amelia sit up and start walking.  What an amazing year its going to be!

If you’re expecting and interested in booking a newborn session with me, please contact me at Carrie Collins Photography.  Consider booking early as I do only take a few clients per month and tend to book up quickly. If you are interested in seeing more images, please visit my Newborn Gallery.

Welcome Baby Penelope – 21 days new and just a dream to work with!

I absolutely love photographing this family!  They are long time clients, cherished friends and now proud new parents to their first girl.  I could not wait to get baby P in to the studio after her birth but Penelope had lots of visitors in the first few weeks (of course) and so I had to wait 21 LONG days before I could take her portrait.  Her mom was even nervous that she had waited to long but honestly, you can hold a successful newborn session anytime during the first month.

Penelope’s newborn session was styled in cream and gold tones to match her nursery which mom has decorated beautifully.  Her session was easy breezy, taking only an hour and a half  from start to finish and I just love all of the beautiful details we captured.  I used several different angles so I could capture all of the features that make baby P so special.  Look at those darling baby rolls and her sweet facial features.

Below is just a small sample from Baby P’s NB session.  These images will be treasured, no doubt!

If you’re expecting and interested in scheduling a Newborn Session with me, either in home or studio, please contact me at *protected email*.  Please also consider booking early as my schedule tends to fill up quickly.

One of the questions that I’m most frequently asked by my clients is what poses should I expect to see during my newborn session? I’ve created this post as a guide to detail those key poses and better understand newborn photography safety basics.

Photographing your newborn is a joyous event! This is your little one’s first professional photo shoot. The expressions will be spontaneous and the beauty of the image emerges directly from your newborn’s innocence.

As a photographer, my first goal is to ensure that your baby is safe and comfortable throughout the session. This means that I keep my studio at the correct temperature as baby is not yet able to regulate body temp on his/her own. If we use props, those are weighted on the bottom to be certain that they won’t topple. And most importantly, we modify poses and workflow if necessary. We are flexible. Not all babies will go in to every pose and forcing them just makes no sense. We always have a plan B and even C.

My second goal is to capture everything about your little one in a way that it will never be again; brand new. I want to document those pouty lips, tiny fingers and toes, and of course those adorable wrinkles on baby’s back.

Keeping your little one’s safety and comfort top of mind, my session workflow typically focuses on 7 main poses. It is within each of these poses that I incorporate props, wraps and hats that help to bring out baby’s personality and your own personal style preferences.

1.Froggy
By far my, this pose is the most requested by parents as it is considered the quintessential newborn pose. This pose can truly highlight your baby’s tiny features. Legs are by the side of baby and hands are placed under the chin cupped. Most babies really enjoy this pose and they can readily be soothed to sleep while in it. Parents love it too because we get those squishy cheeks! Please note that with Froggy pose, we shoot several shots to composite together in post processing.  This is for safety and we never compromise.

2. Bum Up
This pose is my personal favorite because you can capture everything at once. Facial features, flexibility, and those baby fat rolls. We use several different props and wraps to add variety and make certain that all parts are covered.

3. Wrapped

Many times, wrapping a baby is the only way to get them to completely relax during a session.  And that’s okay. After all, there’s a reason that we refer to babies as “bundles of joy”. They look incredibly adorable all wrapped up. To get variation with this pose, we tuck hands in, pull them out and we can even use wrapped poses inside many different props.

4. Side Sleeping
Side poses are where we work the angles and use variations on hand placement and well as wrapping techniques. This pose is far from boring. Often times, this pose can bring a tear to parents eyes as they notice the absolute serenity of their sleeping newborn.

5. Taco

Sometimes called the womb pose, this pose offers up the ability to showcase all of baby’s special features, Those of the face as well as fingers and toes.

6. Chin on Hands

This is another pose that offers up the “cutest moments”. This pose can be done within a prop or simply on the bean bag and can be shot from multiple angles.  I love this pose because I tend to get sweet little baby smiles while I’m snapping away.

7. Parents and Siblings

Of course we focus on capturing mom and dad as well as siblings in each newborn session. These are cherished images and definitely my clients favorites!

While this isn’t everything that we fit in to a session, this gives you a good idea of what you can expect from a newborn session in my studio as well as what types of poses will be filling your gallery.  As any newborn photographer would, I encourage all of my clients to ask questions about both posing and safety.  I’m more than happy to talk this through and to tailor a session based on preferred poses.

Working on your craft is always important!  So this past week, I took a time out from client sessions and flew to southern Florida to attend a Master Photography workshop featuring some of my wonderful colleagues both domestic and international.  The workshop featured acclaimed newborn photographers, Nicole Smith of Nicole Smith Photography and Amy McDaniel of Dewdrops Photography by Amy McDaniel.  It was amazing to work with them and witness their unique techniques for capturing newborns at their best.

Over several days, we reviewed safety, posing, set design (props and color choices) and all of the components that go in to a successful newborn session.  We also had the opportunity to cuddle with some adorable newborn models.  Who could resist??  We had only one newborn under two weeks of age.  The majority of our precious models were closer to three weeks old and the images we took were amazing!  This just serves to emphasize that you can capture those sleepy and squishy newborn photos with older babies.  New moms should never feel like they missed out if they don’t get the session scheduled in the first 14 days.

I’m so thankful every time I make this type of investment in industry education.  Time spent with the experts is invaluable to my business and I always look forward to translating this learning in to more treasured newborn images for my clients.
If you’re expecting and interested in booking a newborn session with Carrie Collins Photography please send me and email.  I’m currently booking for May 2017 and beyond.
