BOOK DESCRIPTION

Becca tells herself that the words are just a cruel symptom of Nancy’s illness; after all, she has her birth certificate, and pictures of herself as a newborn along with her Mom, Dad and older brother, Danny. Becca tries to forget, to get on with her life – until the day the police question her about the whereabouts of a missing woman, Katie Collins.

Katie has disappeared without a trace, telling her husband that she is leaving to find Rebecca Wall. But Becca doesn’t know Katie, so it’s a case of mistaken identity – isn’t it? But as Becca discovers why Katie was desperate to find her, the lies that Becca has always believed come crashing down. Soon, it’s clear that someone knows the truth – and that they’ll stop at nothing to keep their secrets…

An addictive, fast-paced psychological thriller with a shocking twist that will leave you gasping. Fans of The Girl on the Train, The Wife Between Us and T.M Logan will be gripped until the very last page.

Familiar Strangers: An absolutely gripping psychological thriller with a killer twist

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

OMG! Alzheimer’s is a terrible condition that robs people of their lives, leaving their family to grieve for their loss of that person way before they die. Becca had watched the mum that had loved her all her life slip away from her a little more every day with only rare moments of recognition. One of her mum’s moments of clarity took away everything real for Becca. Just five words, “You are not my daughter”. Then her mum was lost again in her own world. I felt like a tidal wave had hit me! I read it again, surely it was part of her mum’s illness.

When a woman goes missing Becca is drawn into another world of uncertainty. This book was really giving me an uneasiness that I don’t normally feel. I couldn’t help but put myself in Becca’s shoes but when I did the rush of emotions were so very overwhelming. What begins as a little digging into the past soon gets to a point of no return, so many times I wished her to stop and hold onto what she had.

What incredible characters there are in this story, that even now just won’t leave me alone. I absolutely loved the corkscrew of events that took me much deeper and much darker than I could have thought possible. I had a huge tissue moment that I don’t think I will ever forget. I didn’t want to put this book down and yet at times I felt that I needed to stop this nightmare swimming round in my mind. What a story!

Becca is an incredible character that feels so alive, every explosive emotion captured and transferred to me. This is a massive must read. Shocking! Devastating! Deadly and utterly mind-blowing!

I wish to thank the publisher and NetGalley for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

Kingsbane (Empirium Trilogy)

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

This is the second book in the trilogy and a huge read to boot at just under 600 pages. The alternating chapters between Rielle Dardenne and Eliana Ferracore, both Sun Queens set years apart, make for two epic stories, each often ending on a bit of a cliff hanger. I flew through this book unable to leave either character in peril. At times hating who and what they did and at others seeing the vulnerable side of them that had so much growing to do.

There is an abundance of characters on both timelines but all very distinctive, as I remembered each of them how each Queen saw and felt about them, be it through love or mistrust, there is a lot of the latter. There is a brutality about each betrayal that hurt more than anything physical and as a reader, I felt each one. I wasn’t ever an outsider looking in Claire Legrand made this story part of me.

I loved the in-depth descriptions of each of the factions distinctive house colours, the castles, and people, the riches and filth, as it paints a vivid picture on every page, bringing together a total experience feeling of being there. It is a truly epic read of angels, special powers handed down to heirs, heroes, villains and mere mortals.

The last 100 pages have a different feel as the atmosphere in each just intensifies with chapters being devoted to different characters. I welled up in so many as the story worked to at outstanding ending that I really can’t wait to continue in the final book.

Highly addictive, truly magnificent.

I wish to thank Charlotte Cooper for arranging a readers copy of this book for me, which I have reviewed honestly.

Thanks to Alison Menzies public relations for inviting me to read and review this book, THE KILLER ACROSS THE TABLE by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

‘John Douglas is the FBI’s pioneer and master of investigative profiling, and one of the most exciting figures in law enforcement I’ve had the privilege of knowing’ Patricia Cornwell

‘John Douglas knows more about serial killers than anybody in the world’ Jonathan Demme, Director of The Silence of the Lambs

In The Killer Across the Table, legendary FBI criminal profiler and number one bestselling author John Douglas delves deep into the lives and crimes of four of the most disturbing and complex predatory killers he’s encountered, offering never-before-revealed details about his profiling process and divulging the strategies used to crack some of his most challenging cases.

Former Special Agent John Douglas has sat across the table from many of the world’s most notorious killers – including Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, ‘Coed Killer’ Edmund Kemper, ‘Son of Sam Killer’ David Berkowitz and ‘BTK Strangler’ Dennis Rader, and has also been instrumental in the exoneration of Amanda Knox and the West Memphis Three. He has gone on to become a legend in the world of criminal investigative analysis, and his work has inspired TV shows and films such as Mindhunter, Criminal Minds and The Silence of the Lambs.

In this riveting work of true crime, Douglas spotlights four very different criminals he’s confronted over the course of his career, and explains how they helped him to put together the puzzle of how psychopaths and predators think. Taking us inside the interrogation room and demonstrating the unique techniques he uses to understand the workings of the most terrifying and incomprehensible minds, The Killer Across the Table is an unputdownable journey into the darkest reaches of criminal profiling and behavioural science from a man who knows serial killers better than anyone else. As Douglas says:

‘If you want to understand the artist, look at his art.’

If you want to understand what makes a murderer, start here.

BUY LINK:

The Killer Across the Table: From the authors of Mindhunter

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

Being a keen reader of crime books I felt that I was like a bee to a honeypot from the very first chapter. John Douglas worked for the FBI delving into some of the most high profile minds that there has ever been trying to find out what makes a serial killer tick. He looks at if it is the way a child or adult is treated that sends them over the edge or if a killer is born that way.

The thing that stands out in the book is his ability to get these killers to talk with ease to him, he has his own methods to get them to open up and once they do it seems that there is no stopping them. He stays professional throughout not letting his emotions show of how he sees these killers.

One case, in particular, is extremely sad, that of the horrific murder of a seven-year-old girl. No remorse is shown, with the killer happy to retell every detail as if it was yesterday, but it seems that this is quite common because these killers replay the events regularly in their own mind. Another killer targets family friends children. The brutality is sickening as he goes out looking with the family knowing that the children are dead.

John Douglas builds trust with these killers so that he can get to know them and lets them talk freely about why they do certain things to their victims. The rituals, why that particular victim? Was there a trigger or was a murder planned? A stranger or someone they knew? The work he has done has been revolutionary to pinpointing certain types of characters for the FBI to look out for after a serial killer becomes active.

I found the book totally fascinating, disturbing and engrossing.

Shallow Grave meets The Secret History in this quirky psychological thriller.

When you’re bound together by secrets and lies who do you trust?

Bristol, 1988.

Five young graduates on the threshold of their careers buy a house together in order to get a foot on the property ladder before prices spiral out of their reach. But it soon becomes the house share from hell.

After their New Year’s Eve party, they discover a body – and it’s clear they’ll be the first suspects. As each of them has a good reason from their past not to trust the police, they come up with a solution – one which forces them into a life of secrets and lies.

But can they trust each other?

The Suspects

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

When five graduates start work as journalists with the same employer they decide that buying a house together will be a good idea. It isn’t long though before they find many pitfalls and what-ifs that could go wrong. They are far from perfect housemates with the saying you never know a person until you live with them, ringing in their ears. Emily, Imogen, Zanthe, Stuart and Zac soon see a new side of each other, lazy, controlling, bossy, and everything else in-between. So they thought that a New Years Eve party seemed like a good idea to ease the tension a little. The thing is a couple of days later they find a dead man down the cellar and none of them know who he is.

Now logic has definitely left the building as all they can agree on is that their lives, careers, and futures that they had planned out are getting further out of reach. All they can see is jail time, losing their house and their jobs so the only solution is to lose the body, but where? Now things had got a bit strained before and this doesn’t help. Is one of them a killer? Does one of them know the dead man? Are the rest of them in danger?

This is a story with characters that really got under my skin as I cringed and cursed at the choices that these educated professionals made. Everything had gone bottoms up pretty early on in the story so it felt like I was in the same boat as them, knowing little about any of them and who they really were. The further I read and the more paranoid I became with each housemate.

I can’t say that I liked the housemates any more the further that I got into the story but I don’t think that the author intended me to. Their lives entangle with each other further the more that they cover up. This was a house of cards ready to fall down, gripping, tense and very shocking, it totally threw me.

A brilliant storyline and a very engrossing read.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

In the midst of war, he found love
In the midst of darkness, he found courage
In the midst of tragedy, he found hope

The Beekeeper of Aleppo

What will you find from his story?

Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo – until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain. On the way, Nuri is sustained by the knowledge that waiting for them is Mustafa, his cousin and business partner, who has started an apiary and is teaching fellow refugees in Yorkshire to keep bees.

As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all – and perhaps this is the hardest thing they face – they must journey to find each other again.

Moving, powerful, compassionate and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Told with deceptive simplicity, it is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.

The Beekeeper of Aleppo: A moving testament to the human spirit

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

This is an extremely moving story about ordinary people being caught up and emotionally destroyed in the consequences of war.  Set in both Syria and the UK it is one family’s story that overlaps with other families and friends that have experienced similar devastation.

The Beekeeper of Aleppo is Nuri who was in partnership with his cousin Mustafa, they lived quite an idyllic peaceful life at one with nature. Afra, Nuri’s wife was an artist and they had a small son Sami. When war came it was brutal, devastating and took far more than their business. The terrible atrocities and loss were too much for Afra to deal with, she could not bear to witness any more horrors and lost her sight.

They were left with two choices, stay and be murdered or flee to another country. The story follows them on a perilous journey through different countries until they finally reach the UK. They meet other people on the journey who have similar stories to tell. One of the biggest fears is losing touch with their families so wherever they get a chance of an internet connection they use it.

Beautifully told, loved the little bee story too that ran alongside this one. A ‘refugee’ bee kicked out of its hive. Just a little help can make all the difference.

I wish to thank NetGalley and the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

You’d kill to be one of them.

1998. A sixteen-year-old girl is found dead on school property, dressed in white and posed on a swing. No known cause of death.

Four girls know what happened.

And until now they’ve kept their silence.

Violet is returning home, back to the sleepy coastal town which holds so many memories.

In 1998, after a tragic accident claimed the lives of her father and sister, she joins Elm Hollow Academy, a private girls’ school with an unpleasant history of 17th century witch trials.

There she is drawn to Robin, Grace, Alex and their charismatic teacher, Annabel; she is invited to join them in their advanced study group.

There they learn about art, literature and the grisly history of the school. Though Annabel claims her classes aren’t related to ancient rites and rituals, she warns them off the topic, describing it as little more than mythology. However, the more the girls learn, the more they start to believe that magic is real and that together they can harness it.

But when the body of a former member of the society is found on campus nine months after she disappeared, fingers are pointed at those closest to her. Leading Violet to wonder whether she can trust her friends, teachers, or even herself.

The Furies

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

Violet at 15 is a vulnerable and isolated young girl. Her father and sister died tragically in an accident and her mother simply can’t cope with her own grief never mind Violet’s. No-one else had seemed to want to take responsibility either so Violet was told to take however much time she needed off school until she felt better. Now tell a young girl that and you just don’t see them for dust.

Twelve months later exams had been taken and Violet had returned to school for them. She had miraculously done ok but knew that with the right teachers that she could have smashed it. When her mother suggests that she uses insurance money from the accident that she had been in with her dad and sibling to further her education then she jumps at the chance. Violet enrolls at Elm Hollow Academy for girls.

Elm Hollow Academy is a pretty creepy place, with a creepy colourful history of strange goings on to go with it. Violet is taken under the wings of a group of girls, with one girl, Robin, having a particular interest in her. The four of them are invited by the art teacher to take extra special classes. The story takes on a real dark side and opens up a ‘secret school’ tradition that only a handful of pupils can be part of.

The things that bind the girls together are also the things that drive them apart as the more they learn the hungrier they become to get to the ultimate goal. They find themselves on a roller coaster of events that they can’t seem to stop. Friendships and trust are pushed to the limit in the tight group.

Now I will make it clear that this felt more like a book for teenagers and seems to focus more on the story than the characters. There are a couple of shocking storylines that the girls follow, which are a little disturbing but at the same time make thrilling read that left me feeling uneasy.

Murder, mystery and the occult are all busy storylines in this book. A very creepy read for teenagers.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

The Detectives

DI GILBERT (‘GIL’) MARKHAM
DI Markham is a startlingly talented detective rising through the ranks of Bromgrove CID. He is distant and austere — the product of a profoundly difficult childhood — but has a natural magnetism which inspires loyalty. He clashes with his slippery boss, DCI Sidney, who prioritises the force’s public image.

DS GEORGE (‘NOAKESY’) NOAKES
DS Noakes is a slobbish, uncouth and outspoken Yorkshireman, an object of despair to his superiors. He is, however, also a man of hidden depths, with a sensitive streak and a secret flair for ballroom dancing. Markham sees through his philistinism and they form an unstoppable partnership.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

Kent Fisher is a man that wears many hats. Firstly he is an Environmental Health Officer, which has already been the reason that he has turned super sleuth and solved a growing number of murders in the course of his investigations. Then there is the love of his life, his animal sanctuary, where he would happily spend every second of his time. He is also coming to terms with the discovery of who his biological father is, which is still hush, hush. It is not like he has to find time fillers in his busy life but things are about to get a little more complicated.

I loved this fourth book in the superb series as I felt that I was playing an upmarket edition of Cludeo! When Kent is approached by DI Ashley Goodman, a very ambitious lady, to help her dig into the past after a body has been discovered, it is to find out, Who had been murdered ten years ago? Who had committed the crime? And, Why had the body been buried on his father’s land? Shh, still hush, hush!

This isn’t just a cracking case to get stuck into, it is up close and personal as far as Kent’s love life goes too as he gets torn into so many directions with more than one woman after a piece of him. I cringed and chuckled as this normally level headed logical man, who didn’t know which direction was up!

Time completely ran away with me as I read this book as I was totally involved in solving this mystery, which came together perfectly. There are some real characters building in this series which I now care about, love it when a series affects me like that. Not that I would like to live there, there are rather a lot of dodgy people in this idyllic country scene, but with a handful fewer now Kent is doing his bit. The brilliant end left my mouth open and needing book 5 like next week, please.

HERE IS A LITTLE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rob Crouch lives and works in East Sussex, England, in the shadow of the beautiful South Downs. During his career as an environmental health officer, he’s focused on improving hygiene standards in food businesses. This has led to him editing and writing for a respected food hygiene manual for caterers. He has also specialized in workplace health and safety in the leisure and service sectors, investigating several fatal work accidents. But secretly, he’s always wanted to solve a murder. It started when he watched TV’s Lieutenant Columbo unpick perfect murders with an affable but dogged pursuit of incongruous details. A healthy diet of crime fiction and drama followed, including Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Morse, and Miss Marple. When he became an avid fan of Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone, he realized he wanted to create a different kind of private detective to solve his murders. Set beneath the rolling hills of the South Downs, No Accident is Rob’s first novel featuring Kent Fisher, an environmental health officer with more baggage than an airport carousel. Within minutes of arriving at the scene of a fatal work accident, he uncovers details that don’t quite make sense. Like his hero, Columbo, Kent digs deeper and deeper, disregarding procedure, until work and his personal life collide with devastating consequences.
