Woven Sun
~ Citrus ~
Photographer |  Carianne Older
Muse | Liliana Ruger

When we saw the latest Woven Sun collection shoot we instantly knew we have to share this radness with you folks!
Absolute babe Lili in their vibrant Citrus Electrics Intimates was captured by Miami based photographer Carianne Older which was so kind to tell us a little bit about the inspo behind this shoot and her amazing work…

Tell us about the inspo for your Wovensun shoot?
Lili and I got together in the home she was vacationing in down in Miami and created some retro vibes for Woven Sun together. The wall paper moment was incredible, it meshed right in with Woven Sun’s vibe. I always try to keep my shoots set in the eras of 1970-1990. This one felt very 1970’s to me.

How did you get into photography?
I got into photography because i was modeling so much that one day it clicked in my head that I could be the one taking the photos, so I bought a really nice film camera and the rest is history!

What inspires you most?
My number one inspiration is anything David Lynch related. Other than that…dreamy settings, my friends, the sky, the sun, the beach, the color red.

What does photography mean to you?
Photography means a lot to me, photography is my creative outlet turned career. I love to take photos so much, I am always inspired by making others feel good about themselves through photography.

As a kid what did you dream of becoming?
My whole life up until college I swore I was going to be on Broadway as a performer. Things changed, and thankfully I changed my mind. I did end up working on Broadway, but as a house manager. So in the grand scheme of things, I did manifest working on Broadway from a very very young age- just not in the way I always saw myself doing it.

What do you think is most important at a shoot?
Trust. Trust between me and the model. I need to know that they feel confident, comfortable, and willing to create with me.

Is there anyone whose work has influenced you?
Many of my photographer friends I have met in real life or on instagram inspire me. We all inspire each other, everyone is producing such great work nowadays, it’s easy to be inspired.

How would you describe your style?
Dreamy, girly, retro, fancy, feminine.

What is the most challenging part about being a photographer for you?
It’s all challenging, photography is not easy! Don’t be fooled, it looks fun and simple, but it’s really not. Im self-taught, so learning to shoot film was a journey…hey, it still is a journey! I learn something new everyday, and I get stronger with every shoot I do.

Any photography tips?
Don’t be scared to shoot film! Pick up a camera and put down your iPhone.

What are your future plans?
I’m taking the leap and moving to Los Angeles in July, catch me out there from now on!

Behind the Labels – Bohemian Diesel Marketplace

Lovingly handmade OOAK embroidered kimonos, silky pants and amazing flowy dresses in bright colors…. Oh we’re deeply in love with everything ‘The Rags Tribe‘ does and creates!

For their new beautiful collection we sat down with owner and creator Dawn and asked her a few questions about her label. ♡

So who is behind The Rags Tribe? And where do you call home?
I am Dawn Schuster, the founder of The Rags Tribe. I live between vibrant Tel Aviv and Mumbai where my workshop is.

What gave you the push to create your own label?
I always wanted to have a fair trade company and after many trips in India, I was constantly amazed by the incredible colours, embroideries and fabrics. What struck me really hard during all my times there was how women were treated in much of society, and I decided that I wanted to empower women with my business. Which women have no hope or chance of escape? Sex trafficked women, where India is one of the worst places in the world. So I decided to make it my mission to give as many of these ladies hope and a light at the end of the tunnel.

Tell us about The Rags Tribe and the organisation you work with and support!
The Rags Tribe is an ethical bohemian clothing brand that empowers women who have been rescued from sex trafficking by giving them jobs. Every garment is made by these brave, special women. We use only vintage, upcycled saris which I curate myself from all across India. Each piece is one of a kind with hand embroidery and hand dying. I work with an incredible charity in Mumbai that rescues women and children from trafficking. The work they do is incredible.

Where and when do you feel most inspired?
I feel the most inspired when I am with the amazing women who are making The Rags Tribe clothes. Their strength is unbelievable.

What is the best part of your job?
I absolutely love the process of finding the vintage fabrics. I travel to villages, markets, towns and cities all across India to places where no tourists have been before and at all times of day and night.  I love it when I find real treasures.

Is there anything you don´t like about it?
As I do not speak Hindi, communicating on the road can be quite the challenge. Also as I stand out like a sore thumb in India, I am the constant target for scammers (like many tourists).

What are you most proud of?
I am the most proud of seeing the women smile and the light come into their eyes. I really believe that everybody needs a purpose and the fact that these women feel truly needed and appreciated for the first time in their lives makes even my most stressful times worth it.

What makes you sad?
The stories of what the women who work with us have been through are worse than your worst nightmares. Each and every one of them has gone through their own terrible suffering and it is so painful to hear. You can read some of their stories in my blog on my website. They want to get their stories out to the world as most people prefer to be ignorant to such subjects. Visiting the Red Light area where my wonderful women came from is also pretty distressing, especially seeing the children living in this environment.

A message for women everywhere…
I feel we all need to open our eyes and realise that we are all connected. We need to have empathy and compassion for other women and support each other.

Everyone should at least once in their life…
Travel alone. I think that you connect with people and learn things about yourself in ways that you can’t do with friends or a partner.

What’s your vision for the future of your brand?
I hope to keep growing and have many women working with us. I would love to one day expand to other countries also and use the amazing fabrics that are made around the world and help women from more places.

Behind the Labels – Bohemian Diesel Marketplace

Happy Monday beautiful souls!
Oh, this week really couldn’t start any better, a new beautiful label just hit our Marketplace, and we are super excited to introduce it to you today:
Xaura the Label

Absolutely in love with these gorgeous designs and sooo happy to have Xaura onboard!
Check out what Xaura designer and creator, lovely Kavita Pateltells us about her label in the interview we did for our BtL series below:

Tell us about Xaura and the artisans you work with!
Xaura represents how we feel when we wear beautiful clothes made ethically by hand and the energy we put out to the world. It’s about supporting traditional craftsmanship and feeling the pride of wearing something beautiful while making a positive impact. X represents the merging of two cultures, Eastern and Western, and Aura is the energy that we radiate. Integrating both sides of my upbringing, my Indian heritage and Western culture, has given me an avenue to express my own true self. In the past I have customised outfits through hand embroidery or mirror work. I really wanted to bring Indian techniques to the Western inspired clothing, and showcase the unique skills that is traditional to my culture. The handwork that the artisans in India learn are passed down through generations within families. It’s a means of livelihood for the communities. It’s a laborious task to produce an item and the skills and the effort put into each piece is what makes Xaura unique. I am very excited to be working with artisans who still practise these ancient crafts today and to be able to showcase it in a contemporary silhouette.

What gave you the push to create your own label?
I knew from a young age while playing with dolls and making them dresses that I wanted to become a fashion designer. he plan was always there but the actual push came from within by believing and finally having the courage take the jump and follow my dreams. My family are my biggest supporters and have always been encouraging and supportive which has made this journey smoother.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
Kind, strong-willed, mellow

What are three words you would use to describe the women that wears Xaura?
Strong, free-spirited, unique

A message for women everywhere?
Be kind, work hard, be humble, smile often, stay loyal, be honest, travel as much as possible, never stop learning, be giving and love always. Empower each other and know your self worth.

Who and what inspires you?
I get inspiration from my culture and my experiences from travelling and exploring different cultures.

What does “being free” mean to you?
Liberation, from your mind. Freeing ourselves from limiting beliefs that are holding us back from doing or achieving things we want.

The mantras you live by…
Life is a journey and we are just passing by so might as well make a positive impact with a smile and give back as much as possible.

Everyone should at least once in their life…
Experience a yoga retreat. It’s a chance to fully disconnect and practise what’s good for your body. I’ve been to a few, some a bit unusual, but the feeling I get during my time there and afterwards is like being on cloud nine. Totally rejuvenated and revitalised. I also recommend travelling alone, it really opens you up to new experiences.

What’s your vision for the future of your brand?
The brand believes in sustainable and ethical practices which is a less harmful to the environment and also supports livelihood of local communities. Xaura’s vision is to be able to work with small artisan groups with a focus on slow fashion movement which is more about having a connection with the clothing. To be able to preserve these unique craft techniques to help communities where their livelihood and standard of living will have a positive impact. The aim is to give back to the communities and empower women in order to give them freedom.

Thank you so much Kavita for letting us have a look behind the curtain and for being part of our Marketplace family!
