Blushing Black | A Fashion, Beauty, & Lifestyle Blog
Blushing Black stemmed from a simple idea: to create a beautiful, digital space where I could express my thoughts, showcase creativity and share everything in between. I share content & lifestyle topics that all women could relate to. It turned out to be a safe space where women could feel like we’re having girl-chat on the sofa or laughing over Sunday brunch.
If you follow me on any social media, you know our newest little angel has already arrived. I’m pleased to share my newest heart burster.
Liana Joelle April 10, 2018 7lbs 15 oz Atlanta, GA
It’s been an entire month that I gave birth to our precious new angel, Liana Joelle and life has been turned pretty much upside down ever since. To a certain degree, once you have one child, the 2nd one is pretty much a breeze to some level. The hardest part is learning a new person all over again. Their habits, their styles, their preferences. Not to mention (don’t forget) life over here with husband, work, toddler, school, cupcakes the bring, a house to keep moving, staying hydrated, moisturized and fed and keeping baby alive are all on the agenda for each day. So I decided to extend myself some grace before sharing. The birth of our daughter had to be one of the most beautiful moments of our lives. From the time she was conceived up until the moment she was born, we were constantly reminded that in spite of the madness going on in our lives, God’s plan would work out for the best.
I delivered Liana, via c-section, and the entire experience was so calm and less frantic than the last time. When she finally arrived her cries were so in tune and on pitch, I could swear she was singing. I never knew my heart could expand for another tiny person! Here are some photos of the eventful day and some of our favorites over the course of the last month.
It’s a pretty popular thing to buy items that will help you have a more comfortable pregnancy experience, whether that’s clothes, undergarments, accessories, you name it! While many choose to invest in items during their pregnancy, which they can never use again, I chose the opposite. I wanted to ensure I could find items that would allow me to get back to myself. During my pregnancy, I tried really hard to stay present when it came to finding products to truly help me have a smooth post-partum transition after giving birth. After much research (and scrolling on Instagram), I packaged together the best items that have truly been helping me throughout my recovery period, going back as far as using in the hospital!
The Honey Pot Post-Partum Pads
This is my 2nd time giving birth, so nothing really came as a surprise to me – except these pads! The post-partum pads they give you in the hospital are an ode to everything you remember pads being back in the 1990’s. At least for me. The pads are large and in charge, but they do the job! So when I saw The Honey Pot offered post-partum pads and saw how small the packaging was, I was skeptical! HOW ON EARTH will these cute, thin pads hold anything?! And do they know how long they need to be to cover EVERYTHING? Nevertheless, I jumped in & bought em because I love the products, so I knew these couldn’t be an epic fail.
In the hospital, I used the big pads. I felt secure, safe, and as uncomfortable as they come. But I felt secure. Then I decided to grab one from the Honey Pot. OMG! The length was perfect. They were thin! It felt cool when you put it on – because childbirth can be a little rough on your lady parts. It was perfect! Since then, I’ve worn them every single day with no accidents, no mishaps, and dare I say – NO CHEMICALS! Please take it from me: these are a WINNER!!!
The Honey Pot Mommy-to-Be Wash
Of course I had to follow up with the wash, which is bomb! Skip the “Winter’s Adam” wash you buy at Target and grab this! I always feel so fresh and clean after each wash and it doesn’t take ten zillion hormone-altering chemicals to get you feel that way. This is also a WINNER!
Young Living’s Rose Ointment
Rose ointment: how I love thee? Let me count the ways! I am back on the breastfeeding train and I will never forget trying to get Laila going last go round. My nipples were cracked & bled for weeks and finally they turned pink from being so raw. Let that marinade for a second. RAW! My motto is “Lanolin is a lie.” That cream was always super thick and hurt like no other putting it on. Not to mention I had to add a child who latched like an alligator onto it. Enter: rose ointment.
This ointment is like a Swiss Army Knife for all things dry, chapped, cracked, etc. I used this on my nipples initially after every feeding and when she was asleep to give myself some relief. Today, I am 3 weeks post-partum with no cracking, bleeding, and matter of fact: latching on doesn’t feel like Jaws is clamping down each time. Winner!
Nature Bond Silicone Manual Breastmilk Saver
WHAT?! I owe dinner to whomever invented this contraption here! Girl! When I tell you this little pump has saved me so much milk while breastfeeding! It’s insane.
While nursing on one side, I use this pump to suction out the milk that’s letting down on the other. In the past, I would just let myself leak until it was time to nurse on that side. Today, I am pumping about 3 oz. of milk at a time while feeding. When nursing, every single drop counts!
The Bellefit Corset
One of the downsides of pregnancy is the fact that the muscles in your stomach can separate due to a growing belly. Since I knew I was having a c-section, not to mention a big baby, I decided to find a band this time that I can truly wear to help bring everything back together. Not to have a perfect waistline, but to make sure that everything goes back to its proper place.
I didn’t get a chance to wear mine until the 2nd week, post-partum, but it has been a gem to wear! Nothing crazy, easy to get off to use the bathroom, and it’s keeping everything tucked and tight, holding everything in place until it stays there. After spending way too much money after my first time giving birth, this corset is the one and only purchase I needed! It has been the best!
Glossier Cloud Paint & Boy Brow
Okay, I know – these aren’t post-partum products, but they sure have been essential in my post-partum journey. Anything that keeps me from looking like Michael Jackson in the middle of the street dancing with the rest of the ghouls and goblins in the graveyard is worth mentioning in my book.
I am in LOVE with both of these. I can easily put on my foundation, add a little cheek color and make sure my brows are filled in, all without any brushes or formal equipment. It’s the perfect toss on and go products that every cool girl needs in her bag!
I have to admit: I am not one who’s fond of maternity clothes, but this pregnancy I decided to truly give it a try to find pieces that actually fit, are actually affordable & comfortable. I have been living in maternity clothes from ASOS in the last month & their clothes do not disappoint! I even found this dress that has an athletic feel, wears well & is soooo comfortable! I am super impressed with the maternity apparel from ASOS. It has truly made this pregnancy more stylish & comfortable than ever.
I was going to wait to pack my hospital bag at the last minute…but time is almost up!
When it comes to packing, I can admit I usually wait until the very last minute to get it all together. In usual “Tisha Fashion”, I was planning on tossing a few essentials in my hospital bag around…eh, week 37 or 38. When the doctor told me at my last appointment the baby was head down and I started having lightning speed contractions, Hubby told me to saddle up. It was time to pack! While I still don’t anticipate her arriving anytime before her due date (fingers & toes crossed), I went ahead and got my list in order and made my rounds to ensure I had the best of everything this time around. Here’s are my no-kidding, no fuss must-haves.
Blankets & onesies for baby – Truly aware they give you all the things baby needs, but I like to have my own. Every baby will be wearing the same blue, pink and white striped hats and blankets. I like my baby to have her own personality.
The Honey Pot Post-Partum Pads & Wash – This go-round, I wanted to bring my own postpartum items that I knew would be effective and toxin-free. I am in L O V E with The Honey Pot brand and this time was a perfect time to have all things that support mama after giving birth on hand. I don’t need anything that smells like peaches, a tropical breeze, an ocean – nothing. Give me all natural, please.
BKR Water Bottle – The hospital gives you a water container, but again, I want to bring my own. It’s glass, it’s large, and it’s cute.
Essential Oils – Now girl, you know how I feel about my oils! If you don’t, you need to read this. I have my oil pouch ready with rollers and oils for everything. Whether it’s for emotions to breastfeeding to cramps. I have an oil for EVERYTHING on deck.
Honest Diapers – The hospital prepares your baby’s cart with a ton of diapers, but I am not open to using diapers with chemicals. With Laila, we had to climb mountains and swim seas to keep her from getting a rash. When I finally made the switch to Honest Diapers, we didn’t have another issue with rashes, nor did we have to slather her down with chemically-filled diaper cream after every single change. It wasn’t until Laila was good and close to being potty trained that I figured this out. Ever since then, I have been adamant on only buying chemical-free diapers to pull-ups and chemical-free wipes. Period. Non-negotiable.
The Bellefit Postpartum Girdle – Before you think I’m worried about getting back into “snapback shape”, pump your brakes. Banding is a great way to provide support to your back & body, especially after a caesarean, but the compression also helps with putting your muscles back into form, which can split while pregnant.
These are the must-haves, but there will also be the typical robe, nursing bras, & all that fun stuff to keep me covered & well-prepared during my stay.
The summer was blazing hot, fall came & went too fast, & we survived the coldest winter ever. I’ve got a fever for the spring!
What I’m Wearing: Dress: BooHoo, Boots: Ami Clubwear, Jacket: TJ Maxi: Palais Royale, Necklace: Kendra Scott
Spring has arrived. Dust off all things white, add a simple leather jacket, zip up your boots & let’s start this season off right! I have been looking forward to spring for so many reasons, but mostly to enjoy the fresh air, the crisp weather & outdoors! I’m definitely about to pop, but that doesn’t mean giving up your style is the requirement.
Week 36: The countdown is on! Greatness is on the way!
I honestly don’t think I really started counting the days until I realized January was over and we were past Valentine’s Day! The time has flown by & now I’m coming up in the home stretch of pregnancy. Deep in my heart, I am waiting for greatness!
I didn’t get the chance to take official maternity photos when I was pregnant with Laila due to us getting into a major car accident just after my baby shower. My husband had a concussion and wasn’t allowed to drive, I had anxiety about driving & nightmares about the baby, so the last month of pregnancy was spent talking to insurance claim adjusters, buying two new cars, ER visits, praying Joe was conscious enough to put together a bassinet and other items we needed before the baby arrived that it completely fell off the priority list.
This time my husband and I have been blessed to work together on my content here on Blushing Black, so we have been able to sneak in some time to capture the beauty in this entire process. I’m somewhat sad this journey is about to end soon, but I know on the other side of missing having her close to me is her on the outside just as close to my heart.
