Right now, there’s more people wanting to work at SpaceX than ever. At least so it seems following yesterday’s successful Falcon Heavy launch.

Only minutes after Elon Musk’s newest rocket took off, SpaceX’s open positions page crashed under the surge of traffic that the live stream of the event generated.

It hardly comes as a surprise. Elon Musk’s own Tesla Roadster, flying through space at over 10,000 mph? How could that not rank among the coolest things anyone has ever seen? Of course that people want to be a part of that. After all, it’s space rockets! And a car with it’s own Wikipedia page!

Also, the Roadster itself carries a plaque with the names of the SpaceX employees who worked on the project, which may also play a role.

SpaceX consistently ranks among the top 5 most attractive employers for engineering students.

Ultimately, that Tesla Roadster in the sky is only there thanks to SpaceX’s ability to attract amazing engineering talent. And the company’s ability to do it consistently for years.

In November 2005, SpaceX had only 160 employees. In 2010, they could already boast over 1,000. Last year, SpaceX was already employing over 7,000 people and the number is still growing.

According a survey done by Universum Global last July, SpaceX is the 5th most attractive employer for engineering students in the USA. Elon Musk’s other company, Tesla, placed 4th.

But it’s not all roses. Since the US government regulates rocket technology as weapons, hiring non-Americans is well-nigh impossible.  Most employee reviews on Glassdoor mention “extremely long hours” which “can make work/life balance difficult”.

Still, for most people working at SpaceX, it seems a small price to pay for the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting technology projects today.

It’s funny how the words “you’re fired” always come as a bit of a surprise. Most people tend to be shocked, like they weren’t expecting it at all. Which is quite strange, seeing how many red flags preceded the actual moment. But as with many other things in life, sometimes you can only see clearly when looking back.

It doesn’t have to be like that. Once you know the signs you should be looking for, at least you have a chance to turn things around. These are top 20 warning signs you’re about to be fired. Good luck!

1. Work just got a lot easier.

In a functioning company, new tasks hardly ever stop coming. Ever. So if you feel like you have little to do, your boss probably hands your work over to someone who can do it better than you.

2. Or perhaps you feel in over your head.

Other tactic employers use to fire people is to swamp them with impossible tasks. Sometimes managers do it as if to give you a chance to redeem yourself. Other times, they want to set you up to fail.

3. Did you screw up big-time recently?

Depending on the size of the incident, you can get fired for this alone. Mind you, we’re not talking about minor faux pas here. If you spilled coffee on your boss’s new tie, that’s fine (just don’t do it too often). But perhaps you’ve made a major mistake that cost your company a lot of money. Or worse—caused an external embarrassment.

4. Your boss wants to meet you one-on-one suspiciously often.

If you think that’s a good thing, think again. The they want to check on you this often because they’ve already lost all confidence in you. For what other reason would they feel the need to micromanage everything you do?

5. Yet, you feel your boss has become strangely distant…

Whether your boss decides to watch your every step or ignore you entirely, sudden changes in behavior rarely mean anything good. So if you feel that your superiors get tense whenever they see you, take it as one of the signs you’re about to be fired.

6. …and you coworkers seem to avoid you.

The same goes for your coworkers. A bit like children avoiding outcasts on the playground, co-workers tend to steer clear of sinking colleagues. After all, they’ve probably found out about your dismissal already.

7. They even stopped inviting you to important meetings.

When you’re about to get fired, managers no longer see any advantage in having you present. After all, if they still valued what you have to say, they wouldn’t want to fire you. Moreover, at this point they probably prefer to keep all sensitive information proprietary.

8. Your performance reviews are at best mediocre. 

Mediocre performance reviews are a lot like being told you’re “nice”. Although it’s not a terrible thing to hear, it basically means you’re disposable. Bosses often give mediocre reviews to people they don’t plan on keeping around.

9. They encourage you to go on vacation.

If you’re looking for signs you’re about to be fired, it doesn’t get any clearer than this. Provided it’s not a a reward for a huge project you’ve just finished, your boss is probably telling you they’d rather not have you in the office. (Btw, ignore this point if you have a financially critical job. There might be other reasons for this if you do.)

10. Sadly, someone with the same skillset has just been hired.

Unsurprisingly, your company doesn’t want to fire you without having someone to fill your shoes. It’s quite common to have your job listed on the Internet months before you get fired. They might even ask you to train the replacement yourself.

11. Your boss goes directly to your underlings.

At some point, your boss begins to go directly to your subordinates. Sometimes it can be the same person they’ve asked you to train. If that’s the case, it means they’re going to replace you very soon.

12. Your deadlines just moved up and they’re all around the same date.

If having all your deadlines stacked together sounds stressful, don’t worry, it’s about to end. At least now you know the exact date of your dismissal. It’s a common practice to make people clear their to-do list before letting them know their services are no loner required.

13. Your mistakes or slacking off no longer matter. 

Why? Because it’s your actual mistakes and slacking off that made your boss want to fire you in the first place. They already know about it. On the other hand, suddenly they look at your minor poor behavior under a microscope. After all, the longer the list of transgressions, the easier it’ll be to justify your dismissal.

14. You hear about the company having financial troubles.

When a company suffers from financial troubles, anyone’s job can be on the line. During hard times, both individual jobs and entire departments that fail to generate profit are the first ones to receive cuts.

15. A new boss is brought in. 

Since your previous boss was probably let go for not performing well enough, arrival of new leadership is often accompanied by massive restructuring. Unfortunately, even if you’re perfectly willing to play along with the new guy, he might still perceive you as loyal to the old regime. And hand you a pink slip.

16. You’re denied a transfer, raise or promotion—with no explanation.

If you’re a solid performer and your track record is good, you should be rewarded. If you ask for a raise or promotion, at the very least your employer owes you an explanation. When they don’t give you an explanation, you can expect the worst.

17. Your perks begin to evaporate.

Remember that corner office you used to have? Or perhaps you were the only one not invited to that conference in Barcelona last month. Perks are the way your company says you’re a valued employee. If they begin to disappear, you have every right to worry.

18. They never praise you for your accomplishments.

Take Akrit Jaswal, for example. This medical prodigy was only seven years old when he first led a surgery. He successfully operated a badly burned eight-year-old girl and saved her fingers.

Taking on a nickname after one of the camera companies, Onafujiri “Fuji” Remet has embarked on his mission to become a professional photographer. This child prodigy has been snapping pictures of street life ever since he first got his hands on a camera.

Fuji’s interest in photography is nourished by the creative home environment where he enjoys unlimited access to cameras. The budding photographer even had an exhibition in Lagos, the largest city in Africa, when he was only three years old. That’s what I call getting a head start on a promising career!

5. Einstein reborn

Four-years-old Taylor Ramon Wilson abandoned toy dump trucks to play with real traffic. He started directing cars with a reflective orange vest. For his fifth birthday, this whiz kid got an opportunity to work the controls of a real crane. And at the age of 14, Taylor built a working nuclear fusion reactor. Through this discovery he joined the elite club of scientists who have created a miniature sun on Earth.

Today, two TED talks of the 21-year-old prodigy have been viewed almost 4 million times. This little Einstein of 21st century won $50,000 for a device that detects nuclear materials in cargo containers. He even got to show this counter-terrorism innovation to Barack Obama himself. Corporations keep wooing him and the government is planning to buy some of his inventions.

6. Lil’ peacemaker

Gregory Smith has an enormous appetite for knowledge. Having sailed through most of elementary school in a single year, this whiz kid possesses IQ so high that it can’t be quantified.

Go check out his bio. His childhood simply looks like a successful human life on steroids. Gregory is speaking at 7 months and solving math problems at 14 months. Ainan Celeste Cawley is a self-taught young scientist. At the age of 6, he decided to pursue his dream of teaching children the beauty of science. He gave a science lecture “Acids And Alkalis In Everyday Life”, which made him the world’s youngest known science teacher.

In addition, this scientific child prodigy passed a GCSE at the age of 7. His unique intelligence is coupled with incredible memory. Ainan can recite the number Pi to 518 decimal places and knows the periodic table by heart.

9. Agony aunt

At just 7 years of age, Elaina Smith has become the UK’s youngest agony aunt. She was snatched by a local radio station after she called in and talked to a woman who wanted to dump her boyfriend. The straight-talking schoolgirl advised the listener to go bowling with friends and drink a cup of milk.

North Korea: the land of Kim Jong Un, nuclear weapons, military parades, and endless lists of bizzare facts. But have you ever considered what do people do everyday? In other words, what are people’s jobs in North Korea?

We’ve put together a list of what seems like the only 10 viable jobs in North Korea. Keep reading to find out more what does it take to get a job in the communist utopia.

1. Military

If you join the army, you’ll have one of the most highly regarded jobs in North Korea. It’s estimated the government spends around 30% of the country’s budget on military despite its ongoing difficulties to fund healthcare or rural development.

You’ll have a chance to become part of the largest military in the world, with 7.7 million servicemen and servicewomen. There are 47.8 active duty military members for every 1000 citizens, which is ten times higher than the US.

Beware, you’ll have to undergo a demanding training, which is mandatory for all men and women in North Korea. Every man has to serve a ten-year term when he turns 18 years old.

These are some of the military jobs in North Korea:

  1. Cyber Warfare specialist. Your job would include hacking South Korean banks, governmental organizations as well as the president’s office.
  2. Member of the submarine fleet, serving on one of the 75 submarines (the US has only 70 submarines).
  3. Missile launch officer. Be ready to deal with Kim Jong Un’s temper tantrums.
  4. Special forces. You would take part in activities such as digging tunnels to South Korea.

2. Traffic security officers

One of the most coveted jobs in North Korea involves working as a human traffic light in the streets of Pyongyang.

If you want to become one of Pyongyang’s 300 “traffic ladies”, officially known as traffic security officers,  you’ll have to meet the following requirements:

  • Single,
  • Under 26 years old,
  • Attractive looks,
  • Undergo demanding training where you’ll master elegant moves and improve your endurance.

You’ll work in a blue uniform which consists of a knee-length pencil skirt, blue fitted military-style jacket with a belt, white socks in heels, a distinct high-peaked hat, and white gloves. In winter, your uniform will be embellished by fur complements and a thick hat.

Job description:

  • Direct traffic with the use of orange halters and a whistle,
  • Act in place of traffic lights,
  • Represent the nation’s capital,
  • Pose for tourist photos,
  • Collaborate with a team of 400 male colleagues stationed at roundabouts.

3. Farmer

If you’re not a fan of busy city life, get a job in the rural parts of North Korea and enjoy the misery of staying outdoors all day.

The monthly income is $1-$2 a month. However, you’ll be able to enjoy the recently introduced benefit of keeping a share of your crops before handing over the majority of it to the state.

Your tasks will include:

  • Feeding the hungry nation,
  • Giving a substantial share of your crops to the state,
  • Tending to cows, pigs, and goats,
  • Working the land with oxen,
  • Contributing to the production of cereal rations on which 16 out of 25 million people rely.
4. Music teacher

As a music teacher, you’ll never lack work in North Korea, especially when it comes to accordions.

During the 1990s, all teachers had to learn the accordion. Many say this requirement remains to this day.

Accordions are often called “the people’s instrument”. If you can’t quite imagine anyone being this crazy about accordions, check out this North Korean take on A-Ha’s Take On Me.

5. Tour Guide

Being a tour guide is one of the jobs in North Korea that require most responsibility.

Over the past few years, tourism has been on the rise in North Korea. It’s estimated, that every year, around 6,000 Western tourists visit the secretive country.

Still, tourists aren’t allowed to explore the coutnry on their own. They’re forced to rely on a tour guide.

As a tour guide, you’d essentially be the keyholder. It’d be your responsibility to watch every move the foreign visitors make and show them the country in the best possible light.

You’d have the following responsibilities:

  • Ensuring tourists don’t take any photos of the military or pictures reflecting poverty,
  • Sticking to the designated routes,
  • Making sure no tourists leave their hotel unescorted,
  • Admire the dear leaders and all their accomplishments during the tours,
  • Ensure that tourists bow to the statues and the bodies of former leaders Kim Il Sung ad Kim Jong Il.
6. Tailor

If you’re looking for a job in the fashion industry, get ready to get busy.

Between 2016 and 2017, North Korea exported $166.82 million worth of men’s waterproof jackets alone.

North Korea exports a lot of clothes, but at the same time they’re always looking for local fashion designers to design clothes that comply with the state regulations.

If you were to design clothes for casual wear in North Korea,  you’d have to follow these job guidelines:

  1. Eliminate any influence of Western fashion such as short skirts, design brands, bright colors, or indecent patterns.
  2. Your main material will be vynalon. A stiff, synthetic fiber created in North Korea in the 195o’s. This material is used for both uniforms and casual clothes.
  3. Remember, no denim is allowed, as jeans represent the capitalist USA.

Tailors have one of the most useful jobs in North Korea. Especially, when you consider the number of uniforms that has to be made every year.

People in North Korea wear uniforms regardless of their age and gender. Children wear pioneer uniforms, students wear school uniforms, and understandably, the military requires thousands of uniforms for its members.

7. Hairdresser

As a hairdresser in North Korea, your creativity would be somewhat limited. You would be required to have a perfect knowledge of the 28 state-approved hairstyles.

Allegedly, only 18 hairstyles for women and 10 for men are allowed in North Korea.

Here’s a few basic rules you’d have to learn before the interview:

Single ladies are allowed to keep their hair longer, while married women must cut their hair short.
