Painting Your Apartment: Can You Do It? Is It Worth It?

Living in an apartment comes with a lot of benefits. You don’t have to take care of maintenance, mortgage payments, taxes, and insurance, all of which are typically left to the landlord. And yet, you can still turn the space into your own little piece of heaven.

However, while getting creative with furnishing and decorating your apartment is clearly within your own power, the possibility of painting your apartment is a bit of a dicier proposition. From getting permission to making plans, you’re going to want to go about painting your apartment with a solid plan in place.

Start by Asking Your Landlord

The first step is going to the landlord to see where they stand on the issue of tenants painting their own spaces. Some landlords have no issue with a fresh coat of paint, while others may not allow any painting that they aren’t overseeing personally. Sometimes a landlord will be okay with painting as long as you commit to giving the entire apartment a good coat of fresh white or neutral-colored paint before you leave. This last option is a commitment you’ll want to consider carefully, as it carries future responsibilities down the road and can cost you your security deposit if you fail to deliver.

How to Paint Your Apartment

If you’ve gotten permission from your landlord and still want to move forward with the project, here are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind as you plan how you will paint your apartment.

Make Plans

It’s always important to plan out what you’re trying to accomplish when you paint a space. For example, if your apartment is on the smaller side, you may want to consider using lighter colors, as these tend to reflect light well and can make a space feel much larger.

Before you actually start painting, you’ll also want to figure out a general flow to the project. Consider the following:

  • Where will the furniture be stored or moved to while you paint?
  • Will you need drop cloths to keep from dripping on the floor?
  • Do you need to purchase any drywall compound and sandpaper in order to fill any cracks or nail holes beforehand?
  • Should you sand the wall before painting? It can also be helpful to sand down the entire wall before you start a project, as well as tape the edges with painter’s tape.

Finally, make sure you have the proper gear purchased ahead of time as well, including edging brushes, larger paint brushes, rollers, masks, gloves, a ladder, and so on.

Get the Right Amount of Paint

It’s important to understand how much paint you need, as it’s nearly impossible to return it once it’s already been mixed. You’ll want to consider this one from a few angles. Stores typically offer paint in quarts, gallons, and five-gallon quantities. Obviously, the larger the container, the more money saved up front.

Next, measure your walls. Multiply each wall’s length by its height and then add them together for a total sum. Then figure out how much area each doorway or window takes up and subtract this from your total. Finally, check how much the surface area covers in order to calculate how many gallons of paint you need.

There are other things to factor in as well. For example, you’re going to want to start with a primer, especially when painting over darker colors. Unpainted drywall also tends to absorb much more paint. You may also want to err on the side of caution by getting a little more paint than necessary in case any is wasted.

Be Safe

Last but not least, make sure to be safe. Painting may sound like a hazard-free project, but there are actually a couple of things you’re going to want to look out for. Make sure all of your outlets are properly secured and have safety covers. Also, make sure to keep the space properly ventilated, as paint fumes can be harmful to breathe in.

The important thing to remember is that you take the time to go about painting with a plan in place. Getting permission, gathering supplies, buying the right amount and color of paint, prepping the space beforehand — you’ll have to do some legwork before reaching for that paint roller. However, if you take your time and do your homework, your apartment will feel brand new before you know it.

Your bedroom is your getaway in life; hence, it ought to be the most comfortable place. It is the space that should express your personal taste, choices as well as collections.

Here I have compiled a list of some amazing ways you can give a makeover to your bedroom. Read on to know more about it:

Select A Subtle Theme

Ditch those dark and bold shades; instead, go for a soft pastel color or some monochromatic combination. You should pay attention to the color psychology, for example, shades of green as well as blue and even lavender are considered soothing for the eyes. They add a feeling of calmness to the environment. Whereas, the bold jewel shades can make your space appear cozier and comfortable. Some of the most fabulous jewel tones include plum, deep blood red, chocolate brown and more.

Make sure to use the lighter version of any color you like. For instance, if you like dark pink, choose powder pink shade as your bedroom theme.

Keep It Minimal

Your bedroom should be two things, comfortable and sophisticated. It does not matter what decoration style you choose; your bedroom needs to be cozy.

Keep everything minimal and don’t load your bedroom with unnecessary things. Furnish your space with all the essentials that you need in your everyday life. For example, a bed along with two side tables, a couch and dressing table are crucial. Everything else apart from these things is clutter, and therefore, it should be avoided.

Let Accessories Do The Talking

Even though you should keep minimal accessories, they are essential in order to make your room appear more eye-catching. Accessorize your bedroom in such a way that it depicts your personality, for instance, if you like art, hang around a nice abstract painting on one prominent wall of your room.

You can accessorize the floor as well. All you need to do is choose a beautiful rug for it and add that missing pop of color to your room. If your bedroom’s color scheme is lighter in the shade, go for a rug that is boldly printed and darker in color. On the other hand, if your bedroom theme is dark, stick to a pastel-colored rug. You may think that a rug is an expensive accessory, you can check out the incredible area rugs here. They are beautifully made, durable and come with a pocket-friendly price tag.

Invest In Luxurious Bedding

One essential thing that you need to take care of is the bedding you choose. It is something that can make or break your entire resting time. Thus, keep a check on everything, from the comforter to the mattress; it needs to be on point.

Purchase the sheets that are made up of 100% cotton and get a comfy fur comforter for you. Make sure to add some sensational and comfortable fabrics to your space. The more luxurious it appears to be, the better it is.

Let The Bedroom Breathe On Its Own

You need to learn to discipline yourself when you’re resting in your bedroom, which includes keeping your phone, laptop, and tablet away. Consider it your real getaway from all the stresses of the world and cherish every moment you spend there. Trust me; it would feel phenomenal to have a bedroom that is dedicated to you only!

These little steps mentioned above can help you significantly in redecorating your bedroom. Just don’t rush things and learn to enjoy every bit of it. Have a wonderful day!

The 6 Things to Keep Close by While Moving (and How to Pack Them)

When you’re packing up your home for a move, it can be easy to get caught up in making sure everything makes it into a box and onto the moving truck. However, it’s important to keep some essentials and important items easily accessible for a smooth move and a comfortable transition into your new home.

Overnight Bag

Whether your move involves an overnight stay at a hotel, crashing with friends for a few days, or going straight to your new apartment, an overnight bag will allow you to stay comfortable and fresh. The goal of an overnight bag is to have easy access to the items you will need during and immediately following your move. While the bag size and contents you pack will depend on the magnitude of your move, it is important to pack essentials like pajamas, a change of clothes, socks, undergarments, a sweater or jacket, and basic toiletries.

For a comfortable first day in your new apartment, make sure to pack a pillow and sleeping bag or bedding, as well as towels and a shower curtain. In case of move-in day injuries, a basic first aid kit may come in handy. Another must-have in your overnight bag is toilet paper, which will save you a trip to the store or frantically digging through your boxes. Other things to consider packing in your overnight bag include a pen, a notebook, and scissors. These are useful while unpacking to create a list of things you need to pick up from the store for your new home and to open all of your moving boxes.

If you’re moving with kids or pets, make sure to pack an overnight bag for them as well. Pack some items to keep kids entertained during the move such as coloring books and crayons, games, or favorite toys. Don’t forget any of their special items, such as a blanket or stuffed animal. For pets, pack their food and some water from home, as some animals need to adjust to the different taste of water in a new place. Also, pack their favorite toys and treats to keep your pet happy and occupied.

Medications

While you’re packing up your medicine cabinet, take some time to sort through your medications. Any expired medications or ones you no longer use should be disposed of properly. Medications that you commonly use, as well as your prescription medications, should be packed alongside your overnight bag. For shorter moves, consider packing a few days’ supplies of medications in a pill box. For longer moves, err on the side of caution and pack your entire supply. Pack any liquid medications in plastic bags or wrap them with plastic wrap to prevent spills.

Electronics

Electronic devices are not only important for communication during a move, but also entertainment, when all your books, movies, and games are packed away. Keep all of the electronics you use on a regular basis close by, including your laptop, tablet, and phone. If you store important information on an external hard drive, you should pack that along with your devices as well. Don’t forget to pack your chargers for each device so you can continue to use them!

Kitchen Essentials

By the time you move into your new apartment, you may find yourself sick of fast food and take out. When it comes to cooking your first meal in your new home, don’t worry about digging through all your boxes for your kitchen supplies. Instead, pack a box of kitchen essentials to get you through the first few days after your move. For easy sustenance and hydration while packing and unpacking, including on-the-go snacks and water bottles, preferably reusable ones. Consider packing an easy-to-make meal, such as spaghetti and pasta sauce, along with a can opener and a pot. Stock up on disposable plates, cups, and utensils, or pack a set of dishes and cutlery per person. If you need your morning coffee fix, also include your coffee maker and some coffee in your kitchen essentials box, along with a few mugs.

Cleaning Essentials

One of the first things you’ll want to do in your new abode is given it a thorough cleaning, and this is something you can start working on before the rest of your belongings arrive. Pack a box of cleaning essentials to get a jumpstart on cleaning, including:

  • Rubber gloves
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Disinfecting wipes
  • Rags
  • Sponges
  • Broom
  • Mop and bucket
  • Vacuum
  • Trash bags

For minor repair needs, you encounter while cleaning, pack a small tool kit.

Important Documents

Keep important documents in a safe place during your move, such as a fireproof lockbox, so they aren’t lost or damaged. Before your move, consider creating digital backups of your important documents by scanning them onto your computer or taking photos of the documents on your phone. Store your digital backups securely on an external hard drive or encrypted online. Important documents to keep close by during your move may be personal, financial, or move-related, including: birth certificates, social security cards, marriage certificates, passports, school transcripts, medical records, a pet’s veterinary records, vehicle titles and registrations, bank records, tax documents, copies of your lease, and your contract with your moving company.

By having your essentials packed and easy to access, you are setting yourself up for a successful move. With your necessities at hand, you can enjoy your first few days in your clean new apartment feeling refreshed and confident.

You’ve heard of Hygge and Lagom, comforting decor trends hailing Denmark and Sweden, respectively. But the next international trend set to sweep the design world is Cwtch. Derived from Wales, Cwtch (pronounced kutch) doesn’t have a direct English translation. It can be described both as a long, warm embrace as well as a cubbyhole or cupboard. The Welsh have used this term for centuries to describe a feeling of comfort and security that can come from a place, an object or a loved one. Homeowners are drawn to Cwtch’s ability to easily bring a level of coziness into their homes without forcing them to follow a set plan, meaning their decor can keep the unique attributes they love.

To incorporate Cwtch into your decor, bring in comforting and relaxing elements into your home. Focus on the items that bring you joy and remind you of where you come from, personalizing your space to suit your hobbies and needs. To help create a more intimate environment, take a second look at small spaces by bringing in a variety of textures and artwork that will help make the area more inviting. Larger rooms can also benefit from Cwtch by being separated with curtains to help increase privacy and bring in a warming element throughout the home. The key to Cwtch is to discovering what harmony and relaxation means to you so that your version of this Welsh design trend is unique to your personality.

Below are Invaluable’s 8 decor tips to bring more cwtch in your home
1. Personalize your space.
2. Create cozy nooks with curtains and dividers.
3. Opt for pieces with history.
4. Rethink your small spaces.
5. Showcase your passions and hobbies.
6. Warm up your home.
7. Don’t be afraid to mix and match.
8. Follow your personal style.

Security Measures for a Successful Move

Everybody wants to feel safe no matter where they live. The place that you call home should feel secure and comfortable — an area that you can relax and not have to worry. However, when you move into a new apartment or home, you’re faced with a new situation and may not know what risks await in your new home. There are a few ways to ensure that moving into your new place is a safe experience for everyone involved.

Making Sure Your Landlord Has Appropriate Security

The very first thing you should do is to make sure that your landlord has installed all of the required security and safety measures in your new place. Tenants have rights to adequate security, and if your landlord hasn’t provided windows that latch or fire alarms that work, they could be violating your rights, depending on where you live. Local laws concerning tenant rights are different not only from state to state, but often from town to town, so doing your research on what is and isn’t required should be a priority.

If your landlord isn’t required to have an alarm system installed prior to you moving in, having one put in doesn’t have to be stressful. Choosing the best alarm system to protect you and your belongings is as simple as deciding what you really want from an alarm system. While you can have entire home security systems installed, there are also portable personal alarms that you can not only have with you in your home, but you can bring them outside of it as well, adding an extra level of security if you plan on doing any early morning jogging.

Not All Threats Come From People

While it is important to protect your new home from intruders, even your home itself can pose certain risks. Slips and falls are surprisingly common home injuries, and keeping you or the moving company safe while moving in or out of a home is important. Check for loose stones on walkway, small ledges in front of entryways, or other hazards. Make sure that anyone entering or exiting your home is aware of them to avoid any potential spills.

Further, you’ll want to check outdoors for any signs of rust. Not only can rust pose a threat to those who have not been vaccinated for tetanus, but they can also lead to structural weaknesses, giving intruders entryways in your fencing, storage areas, or garages. Landlords may not be required by law to handle issues like these, so be vigilant when assessing the property.

Using a moving company is a great way to reduce the stress of a move, but you should always make sure you’re using a reputable one. Rely on recommendations from friends, family, or even aggregated reviews online to make sure you hire a company that won’t accidentally break or misplace any of your belongings.

Making Sure You Don’t Forget the Important Stuff

With all the things you have to get done on moving day, expect matters to get a little hectic. While you should absolutely pack and unpack your essentials first, it can be easy to forget important things that you might need on your first night in your new place. Ensuring that your locks are in good working order and that your AC and heating functions is vital — and since you’ll most likely be ordering out for your first meal, having working locks is pretty important.

While you most likely won’t be able to move everything on the first day, making sure you don’t forget key items is a good idea. Batteries for a flashlight if a power outage occurs, a broom or mop to clean up any spilled liquids or accidentally broken glass can prevent injury, and medical supplies just in case are all essentials you should bring for your first night in your new home.

Moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be if you are proactive about safety and security in your new home. Make sure your landlord has your back, don’t forget any of the important considerations above, and you should be comfortable in your new place right away.

Four Baby Steps That Will Transform You Into A Healthier Version Of You

With warmer temperatures here to stay and summer right around the corner, it’s safe to say that feeling like the healthiest version of you is a top priority for a lot of us. The thought of taking on an entire health and fitness routine can be overwhelming, so start small. By implementing a few new habits at a time, the switch to living a healthier lifestyle will feel less intimidating. With these four baby steps, we guarantee you will feel yourself transform into a healthier version of you. Get ready for it!

Get Outside & Walk

Maybe it’s just for ten minutes, or maybe it’s for an hour, getting outside for a walk will help improve your overall well being in many different ways. Not only are you getting your legs moving a bit, but the fresh air will also leave you feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the rest of your day. If you aren’t an avid exerciser to begin with, walking is a good way to ease into a consistent workout routine. With the warmer temperatures here to stay, there really is no excuse to skip a quick walk each day!

Drink Plenty of H20

Getting enough water each day is critical – several bodily functions depend on there being enough water in our systems. Digestion, healthy skin, getting enough oxygen into the body, and body temperature regulation are just a few of the things that depend on our h20 levels. We know it can be hard to drink enough every day, we struggle with it too. We find infusing our water helps make it more enjoyable. Lemon water is an easy go-to, but we also love adding cucumber & mint or strawberry, lemon, and mint into our Pressa Glass Water Bottle for a refreshing treat.

Plan Ahead & Prep

Meal planning and prepping is the best way to ensure that you will make healthy food decisions throughout the week. Planning out what you will have each day, then prepping what you can help prevent last-minute poor food decisions, as you will already have guilt-free choices on hand. We like to make a day of our meal prepping – Sunday morning grocery shopping followed by a day in the kitchen helps us get our minds right for the week. Plus, experimenting with new recipes can be fun! When starting up a new meal prepping routine, we suggest you keep things simple to avoid getting overwhelmed. Once you feel more comfortable prepping for a week at a time, that’s when trying out new things becomes an exciting task.

The 5 Minute Journal

A healthy mindset is just as important to your overall wellness as any workout or healthy meal. Having a positive outlook can help us make healthier decisions in every aspect of our lives. We like to start our day with The Five Minute Journal: A Happier You in 5 Minutes a Day. It is quite simple and very quick – at the beginning of each day, you journal what you are grateful for, what would make the day great, and what your daily affirmations are. At the end of each day, you journal 3 amazing things from the day, and how you could have made the day better. By focusing on the good in your life, each day will feel lighter and more enjoyable, allowing you to be the best version of you.
