Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme is a medical director at the Adonia Medical Clinic in  London. The Dr’s client base is primarily black women and she has a completely unique approach in which she treats her patients by paying close attention to their heritage. Dr Ejikeme is passionate about educating Black and Asian patients about the common ailments we are susceptible to. Read on for advice on how to combat these common skin complaints.

The number one concern for my Black and Asian patients are disorders of pigmentation. There are three that are most common which include Melasma; dark under eye circles and dermatosis papulosa nigrans; a skin disorder which looks like freckles/moles. Pigmentation can be ageing and make skin look lacklustre. Many think that the only solution to this is covering it with make-up, but there are innovative treatments and lifestyle changes which can help skin look healthier.

Pigmentation

Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder which appears as brown/grey symmetrical patches on the face. It can often be seen on the forehead, cheeks, bridge of the nose, upper lip and chin and is associated with hormonal changes, such as the use of the contraceptive pill and pregnancy. Melasma gets worse with sun exposure and some people note it fades after pregnancy or switching contraceptive pill. However, once melasma is triggered there is no cure, but there are many methods that can be used to significantly fade it. Other lifestyle changes which can help are avoiding the sun and ensuring you use an SPF every day and not just on hot days. When it is really sunny, wear a hat and sunglasses to reduce the amount of sun exposure to the skin. The condition can be helped with topical 4% hydroquinone. This is the most effective medication to suppress melasma. Other treatments include retinoids, chemical peels, micro-needling and lasers.

Dark Under-Eye Circles

A concern for many people of all ages, even as young as 20 are dark circles, or periocular melanosis. This is an area that can make you look tired or older than your years. There are many reasons for dark circles around the eyes. Often it is not down to pigmentation alone; the deep groove below the eye can also cause a shadow which can be due to fat loss or due to the ligaments below the eye becoming more fibrous. Pigmentation can also be caused around the eye due to allergy or trauma; thin skin around the eye leading to visibility of the muscle below; fluid retention and malar festoon, which is the puffy area seen around the eye. To treat this, it’s important to choose the right eye cream with antioxidant properties. Whilst this may not reverse the dark circles, antioxidants can be a very powerful way to prevent further pigmentary changes to the skin. My two favourite antioxidants are niacinamide (vitamin B3) and ascorbic acid. At Adonia Medical Clinic we have developed an innovative new treatment – Clarify-eye which tackles the most troublesome aspects associated with dark circles around the eye. Clarify-eye includes lymphatic drainage which eliminates toxins and reduces puffiness, we then apply specially-formulated eye creams to manage pigmentation and we use a unique chemical peel specially-formulated for the delicate eye area to renew the skin. The treatment is finished off with micro-needling which plumps and LED light to further reduce pigmentation.

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigrans

The third most common skin condition we see is, dermatosis papulosa nigrans  (DPN) – these are benign papules that appear on the face, neck, and chest of Black and Asian people. They have a genetic predisposition, made worse by sun exposure. They can appear as freckles and can be a few or hundreds. Most people like them and they can be left without any concern. For those that require treatment, a small needle with a light current is used to remove the papules from the face, skin and neck.

Lifestyle and Diet

For flawless and healthy-looking skin here are my top tips! Great skin really does start from the inside out, so  make sure you are having a nutrient-rich diet. A diet full of essential fatty acids will increase skin’s ability to retain moisture. Alongside a healthy diet, kickstart the day with a skin-boosting smoothie, rich in antioxidants by simply blending your favourite greens and fruits. Another top tip I tell all my clients is to drink 2-litres of water a day to keep skin looking and feeling hydrated. Get in to good skincare habits. Take the day off by thoroughly cleansing, a deep cleanse will help remove the build-up of impurities and pollutants from your skin. Add in regular exfoliation into your routine to remove dead-skin cells and promote renewal. Finally, a rule for all is to use an SPF daily to keep skin protected from the sun. A good SPF protects from free-radical damage that can cause early signs of ageing.  With the advances in skincare and aesthetics; pigmentation concerns can be addressed and treated to leave skin looking glowing again.

Sharp, shoulder-length bobs with a centre parting are proving popular in the salon right now. Clients are loving the poker straight, sleek, sharp, one-length look.

What are some of the most popular treatments that clients are opting for?
Texture releases or Thermal Wonders are trending. Clients love the fact that they offer a quick and easy way of keeping their natural hair smooth.

What style have you seen trending on Instagram over the last few weeks? This eye-catching look has been trending on social media. I love it because it’s such a vibrant style and it’s a perfect example of an alternative way of wearing and showcasing the beauty of natural hair.

Antidote Street is an exciting online shopping destination for Afro and multi-textured hair offering customers knowledge, power and choice. We catch up with the site’s dynamic and talented founder Winnie Awa to discuss her motivation for creating this disruptive and much-loved e-commerce space.

What inspired you to create Antidote Street?

I launched Antidote Street, alongside my co-founders (and then flatmates) in our Balham flat in 2014. At the time, I was transitioning from relaxed to natural hair and became quickly frustrated by how difficult it was to find product formulated with my hair texture in mind. With a handful of products and passion for changing the status quo in the underserved black hair industry, we set up Antidote Street, determined to provide easy access to the best brands, valuable hair education along with a beautiful user experience and excellent customer service.

Did you always have a clear vision of what you wanted to do

Absolutely! Antidote Street has always been about changing the status quo. The word, ‘Antidote’ literally means something that works against an unwanted condition to make it better. We visualised this digital street, buzzing and packed full of amazing hair products targeting black women but also had the personal touch and customer service of a market. You know how your butcher knows exactly what cut of beef you like?

Did you face any challenges when you began your own business? What lessons have you learned along your journey?

Securing brands in the beginning was tough! We even stalked a brand founder all the way to an event in Paris and video pitched on the spot and still did not secure that brand (haha!). They wanted to know if we had a salon which we didn’t. The fact that we weren’t the traditional bricks and mortar threw many brands because some of the product ranges were typically marketing towards salon professionals. Thankfully this has now changed and over time, we have been able to show the brands that we are not just another pure play retailer and that we care about their brands as much as they do! Tenacity is a word that comes to mind – not so much a lesson but a muscle that you learn to exercise over and over again in business.

How would you describe your typical customer?

Our customer values a seamless customer experience, education and convenience. We are pretty much obsessed with putting our customer FIRST and creating an offering that they can trust to recommend the best products for their hair & beauty goals.

What advice would you give to a budding indie black beauty business owner on how to create a thriving brand with limited resources?

My personal motto is, ‘if you don’t see the change you want in the world, take the reins and create it!’ The majority of brands on Antidotestreet.com were formulated by women who went ahead and did just that.  So if you have an idea, go out there and MAKE IT HAPPEN! Be clear on what problem you are trying to solve and who your product is for. Social Media has made it incredibly easy to connect one-on-one with your potential customer and it is free!

Who would you consider your ultimate beauty entrepreneur inspiration famous or otherwise?

My Dad. Oh ok okay, he is not a beauty entrepreneur but the more I learn about him, the more I am impressed. He is bold, hardworking and built an amazing life from nothing. I once asked him what made him successful and he said he had a real interest in his work and took it seriously. I try to apply the same principle in everything I do.

What have been some of the most profound learning experiences throughout your entrepreneurial journey?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Be agile, take bold moves and if it is wrong, you course correct quickly.

What does the rest of 2019 have in store for you and your business?

The future is so bright and exciting! We have some mega events planned later this year and cannot wait to share. Basically….watch this space!

I recently experienced the most random skin break out. I say random because I have fairly decent-ish skin, and only tend to break out when I’m pre-menstural, which I definitely wasn’t at the time. My diet was also fairly balanced and I wasn’t feeling particularly stressed so it was a little bit puzzling. My skin felt like it was truly in need of a detox so I was delighted when a sample of the BeGlow All-In-One Sonic Skincare system landed on my desk.

As far as first impressions go, I instantly fell in love with the look of it. Whereas skin care systems I’ve tried in the past tended to look a bit clinical and clumpy, on the contrary, the BeGlow looked resplendent in its sleek black packaging that exudes state of the art skincare innovation.

In terms of functionality, BeGlow is an all-in-one sonic skincare system designed to countour, deep cleanse and also provide anti-ageing properties to keep your skin looking as radiant as it possibly can. It works by providing gentle yet powerful pulsations which removes makeup and impurities more effectively than if you were to use your bare hands.
What I love about this particular system is the brush head is made of silicone, so it seems a lot more durable and hygienic than its counterparts (and I can confirm it’s super easy to clean). Upon my first attempt at using, I applied my favourite cleansing oil on my skin, pressed the control button and used in a circular motion. You can adjust the pulsation rate to a more vigorous setting, but I found the first setting was absolutely adequate and quite therapeutic. An added bonus is the anti-ageing applicator, which is a titanium plate which you press against your skin. The applicator has its own unique pulsation which helps improve blood circulation, reduce the visibility of pores and areas that require lifting. While it’s too early to conclude whether it has reduced my laughter lines after a few uses, my skin certainly felt amazing, like it had a really invigorating work out.

All-in-all BeGlow is a welcome addition to my skincare arsenal. Compact, durable, multi-functional, effective and easy to clean, I’d certainly recommend it to those who are looking to invest in a system that lives up to its claims.

BeGlow is priced at £199 and available to purchase at lookfantastic.com
