Fiona is a talented stylist whom I met several years ago. Originally from Shanghai but based in Germany, Fiona was just starting out on her blogging journey. We had a lot in common especially our obsession with everything vintage, also our love of travelling and our appreciation of quality. Fiona began to use our bags on a daily basis and was kind enough to share our story and our products with her followings.
Fast forward to 2018 and during a catch up in Shanghai, we began discussing creating a special bag together. Beara Beara has done several collaborations in the past, however due to our already existing friendship we both wanted to do something a little bit special. We discussed what we both love and again the two aspects to appear were Vintage Style and Adventure.
Over a six month period we discussed both our ideas and settled on a handbag inspired by a classic old briefcase. We both loved the style although they are not used often anymore due to being quite impractical. We would transform this look into a stylish, unique, quality handbag.
The bag developed over time with new features and adjustments with each sample in production. Fiona took time to consider the tartan lining that is a feature of the design and also importantly what accessories would feature on the bag. We settled on a beautiful round front clip and also added the additional feature of being able to wear the bag with a leather strap, intended more for daytime use, or with a brass chain, which gives the bag a little extra class.
The bag was nearing completion and we again started brainstorming about adding a little extra something. This is where we settled upon a personalised leather hangtag, again inspired by old luggage tags. This would feature a co-branded logo on one side and Fiona’s favourite quote on the other.
The bag was finally finished and I was delighted to have Fiona visit us in London. Seeing her with the finished product was fantastic. She had had slight concerns about the size, however luckily enough I was right to insist that it was just big enough for a days essentials while not being a burden to carry. We had a great time hanging out, taking photos, discussing the past year and endlessly looking at what we had created together.
It was a fun and at times challenging project, however I think we both could not be happier with the end result. Thanks should also go out to our workshop for their patience with our endless adjustments and additions and for their as ever existent determination to create the best products possible.
We established our workshop in Bolivia in 2012 along with a local family. The team of five had been creating bags for the local market and had skills past down through the generations. They used antiquated equipment and tools, however they had incredible know-how and had access to excellent raw materials.
We began by designing a few simple designs and created a total of 27 bags that filled 3 suitcases and returned to the UK. Fast forward 7 years and we now employ over 100 people in the same (hugely extended) workshop. All employees have been trained and supported back into employment and the close connection that we have developed is the cornerstone on which the company is built.
When designing our new cafe we wanted to show our appreciation in some small way to those who have dedicated their time and efforts over the past few years to making quality Beara Beara products. We wanted to make these people a feature so organised a photoshoot with Bolivian photographer Henry Ponce Barco. Henry is a local of La Paz and spent two days with our workers in a spare room of the workshop. Henry was able to capture a glimpse of each individual character and should get great credit for the amazing results within a challenging environment.
We thank every one of our employees in Bolivia and we hope to continue to grow our amazing team over the years to come.
We don't claim to be experts in any way when it comes to society however one discussion that was had in our office recently was in regards to the woman's multitude of roles in the modern day. This was the premise when we designed the Margaret Satchel.
The medium size is a box shape satchel that fits 12 inch laptops and A4 paperwork perfect for the office or study. For mothers the flexibility is great for your precious little ones essentials. The front clip gives the simple look a focal point and easy access.
The small is a fantastic unique handbag. Slip in your Ipad or book for commutes or your bottle of water and umbrella for that weekend walk. Sling it over your shoulder for a hands free day or slip the shoulder strap inside and step out for the evening with a special clutch bag.
We thought long and hard about what makes a great men's backpack. The objectives were many but the top three from our research were style, durability and practicality. With this in mind we created the Harry.
Style is of course subjective however one thing we find widely popular is simplicity. No complicated patterns, no over manufactured shapes or branding. We developed a new brass coloured clip to be the focal point at the centre and worked a thick confident line upwards to the peak of the bag. These two give the bag a confidence and a style that is as suited to a rugged weekend adventure as to a cycle to work.
Durability is something that we have have focused on since day one. Our leather is super thick and our stitching is done by maestros who have generations of experience. Investing in a bag like the Harry gives you peace of mind for many years of wear and tear.
Practicality is also an important factor when considering a bag. You need a bag that will fit your daily needs, be comfortable and easy to use. The large central clip gives you quick access to the main compartment, the interior front pocket is great for valuables and the rear zip pockets gives you quick access to your phone or essentials.
The Harry is a not a ostentatious bag but is the epitome of a great all rounder that will be your loyal companion for many years
There are many inspirations in life and sometimes it's good to take a step back and observe. Art is very subjective and we love how a piece of artwork can have one meaning to one person and a completely different one to someone else.
How a piece of art is seen and how it makes you feel were our thoughts when we first discussed the idea of designing a bag that was more than simply aesthetically pleasing. We wanted our creation to evoke both thoughts of adventure and feelings of serenity while also having a strong personal appeal.
The Koey plaque was designed not only for it's overall look but also for it's unique detailing. As you look closer you can see swirling lines and curves, objects and movement. These, like all good art, evoke a variety of responses, depending on the viewer.
People ask what does it mean, or what is it? We simply invite you to have a closer look. How does it speak to you? Essentially there is no correct answer. However, given time, we hope the meaning will evolve for everyone who owns their own piece of Beara Beara art.
A final design is made up of many influences. Aesthetics, functionality, practicality, usability, materials, overall look, hardware, linings, construction, branding, interior. The perfect design is marrying these in a way that they complement each other and no one factor dominates a finished piece in a way that compromises another.
We play with shapes and sizes and discuss how the bag will be used, who will use the bag, where they will use it, why they will use it. This overall picture influences little aspects of the bag that flow into the finished design. It's a fun and interesting process and we look for as many opinions and feedback from the entire team. Jake is still our head designer but he takes on board our newest intern's opinion just as much as Ines, our Head of Production. It's a team effort and something that bonds us as a group.
The Manju became one of our most popular designs, in part due to it's simplicity and also due to it's overall classic yet chic overall feel. The fact that you can swap the leather strap for a chain has also been a nice feature that can subtly transform it from a daytime to evening bag.
The Manju is now available in a beautiful black satin finish leather. We would never claim to create the perfect handbag however it is our team's combined contribution.
Beara Beara is based in one of the busiest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world and we revel in the excitement and energy of London. Well, not always, but in general our team enjoys the fast-paced life of the city, the fact that no two days are the same; work-hard play-hard as they say.
This fast-paced life was the theme behind creating our new office bag, named Charles. We wanted a practical and low impact piece, simple lines, luxury lining, multiple inner and outer pockets, padded for safety. The top handles are extra wide giving you a sense of confidence when you grasp the soft leather in your hand.
We feel this bag belongs to those whose daily purpose depends on their laptops. It belongs in the hands of those who have ambitions, who strive to build a life for themselves without limits. You need to feel confidence when confronted by the competition that is business and having a trusty and stylish comrade by your side is really what the Charles was created to provide.
In life the most beautiful things tend to be simple. Overcomplicated designs make for confusion, uncomfortable to the eye, uncertainty.
It was back in 2015 when we created the Alex Handbag. We sat in our studio, playing with shapes and lines and concepts. We took inspiration from an old binoculars case which had a distinctive vintage vibe. We imaged people in the 19th century with elegant suits and Herringbone flat caps. Finally, we stripped back the design for Alex to reveal herself as a naturally beautiful rounded design and featuring a fun British red tartan lining.
Over the past three years Alex has consistently been in our top three best sellers and now we are releasing a black edition. We know how much some of you love a simple black handbag and the Alex gives you everything that you need; reliability, style, individuality, practicality, endurance etc.
We aren't going to promote the Alex with bells and whistles, she is a humble and simple soul that at the end of the day will be your loyal and trustworthy companion for many years.
Beara Beara is known for it's vintage vibe. Taking inspiration from old-school styles of the past century. This autumn we have taken a slightly different approach, letting our modern sides influence our designs. Of course there is still the subtle branding, simple yet quality hardware, and thick quality leathers yet with a simplicity that is distinctive.
We also went a step further than normal. We didn't just create one bag in several sizes, we created one bag in two styles and in several sizes. The Will comes in both satchel and backpack versions.
The satchel is flexible, has a secure padded laptop sleeve inside and is an amazing work/study bag for those inclined towards the satchel style.
The backpack is portrait shaped to fit comfortably on the back, has an added laptop compartment accessed directly from outside, padded straps and is an awesome bag for those who carry their bag a distance and prefer to be hands free.
Both styles come in a thick yet soft and flexible natural black leather, feature joining top handles and super soft black lining. The front pockets pull the design together and hint at our vintage origins while the beautiful front curve makes this bag distinctive.
This bag has been created for those city adventurers, made to take on the modern environment and compliment any style from the subtle to the flamboyant.
