Monsoon Season Tree Trimming In Phoenix

Monsoon Season Tree Trimming In Phoenix - YouTube

Monsoons season starts on June 15th, which means that strong storms can damage your trees if they are not pruned to allow wind to flow through them. Historically, we used to predict our monsoon season after three (3) consecutive days with a dew point above 50%, but Arizona changed that to help us prepare for the season on a more consistent basis. With that change, we can now plan on having our trees pruned before mid-June in preparation for the upcoming summer storms. Heavy winds and rain can cause sever damage that will prevent your trees from growing healthy and to its full potential.  Trees still need protection from the sun so the trees should not be cut back too much, but rather thinned out on the inside to help with channeling the wind. Also, June is the best month to schedule your tall palm trees to be trimmed.  Many palm trees have fruit that starts to grow on them, so having them trimmed right as this new growth starts is the best time to remove these branches from causing a mess in your yard.  Here is a great link describing the best times to trim many of our trees here in the Phoenix, Arizona area: https://phoenixtrimatree.com/best-time-trim-trees-arizona/ If you have any other questions or would like a more detailed list of exactly what’s included in our regular landscape or lawn care maintenance, please give us a call at (602) 944-0421 or check out our website, www.azlawns.com. Should You Install Sprinklers Before You Sod In Phoenix?

Should You Install Sprinklers Before You Sod In Phoenix? - YouTube

Recently, a Phoenix landscaping customer requested a bid for new grass to be installed at their property.  Great!  Due to the many health benefits of having a grass lawn, we love installing new sod for Phoenix homeowners.  So what’s the problem?  The property owner did not want to spend the money for a new sprinkler system. Installing mid iron Bermuda grass without a sprinkler system can be a very costly mistake.  Newly planted sod requires heavy water to keep moist for 20-30 days to get established in a new yard.  It’s very difficult to get enough water onto the entire grass lawn without a sprinkler system. Without maximum coverage and closely monitored watering, you can either underwater (more common) or over water areas that may pool to much and that too can kill grass. I can’t say this enough – It’s vital to have a sprinkler system before installing sod.  My experiences in the past has been the grass usually starts to die within 24-hours after installation. Everything About & Growing The Red Hibiscus In Phoenix

Everything About The Red Hibiscus In Phoenix - YouTube

This video is about the Red Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) that are often planted here in our Arizona desert. The plant is very noticeable with the large, fist-size blooms of the flowers (different colors are available, but we notice the red variety grows the best). They also have large, dark leaves that make it look like a very thick and lush shrub. They get up to 6-10 feet tall and and about 3-6 feet wide, if they are planted in a proper area for optimal growth (they start at about 1-2 feet in height in a 5-gallon size). They bloom fast and although they are deciduous, they do drop their blooms daily, but since they are larger flowers there is much less to drop which make these a great colorful shrub with little mess for pools and your yard. They grow best in full sun with afternoon shade because they are native to southeast Asia. Since they are not native, they tend to be more prone to frost in the winter months if we get below 30 degrees and they are accessible to wind. They do require more water, especially when you first plant them. We notice they do better closer to turf areas where it’s slightly cooler in the summer months and more moisture in the air. We do water these with our traditional watering schedule with most other plants – see our recommended watering schedule here: azlawns.com/watering After doing some research, we also found that the flowers are mildly poisonous and we recommend clicking this link for more details: https://homeguides.sfgate.com/can-hibiscus-flowers-hurt-dogs-eat-blooms-71517.html These shrubs also attract hummingbirds and are a great shrub with color for covering a back wall or to show just outside of a window. It’s Spring! Time for Bermuda Grass Transition

Winter Lawn Transition in Phoenix - YouTube

It’s early April in Phoenix, AZ and we are starting to get warmer temperatures in the valley that is causing the winter rye grass to die.  That means the Bermuda grass (or whatever summer grass you have) will take over.  However, this period is always difficult to navigate through since the dying winter rye never looks very good. At AMS Landscaping, we always try to get through this period with the least amount of patchy grass as possible. Although it is not always easy, we try to catch it quickly enough to stay on top of the transition with heavy watering. That sounds silly that all we do is increase water, but we can’t stress this enough since the warmer weather will require more moisture anyway for all of your landscaping.  Especially as the winter rye dies and starts to leave patches of dead grass that are not always quickly covered with new, healthy Bermuda grass. Here are the main options we promote to get through this period: (1) Increase water by 50-100%, especially in transition areas. (2) Apply a high nitrogen starter fertilizer to quickly get the Bermuda grass to fill in the bare areas. (3) Use a thatcher to the large dead areas in order to remove the dead grass and promote the new Bermuda, or even lay down more Bermuda seed, if temperatures allow it. (4) The last option is to shut the water off to purposely kill off the winter rye to come back a week later, and scalp it out completely to make room for the new Bermuda growth. (we try not to do this option) There is an extreme option that we offer to completely remove the existing lawn with a sod cutter and install new sod. We have only done this one time to get the yard ready for a wedding that the customer had planned for the spring time and wanted the yard to be perfect in time for their special day. Here is a link to our recommended watering schedule for everything in your yard as the season starts to change: https://azlawns.com/watering/ If you have any other questions or would like a more detailed list of exactly what’s included in our regular landscape or lawn care maintenance, please give us a call at (602) 944-0421 or check out our website, www.azlawns.com.  Please subscribe to our YouTube Channel and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat at @azlawns. https://twitter.com/azlawns https://www.facebook.com/AMSLandscaping https://www.youtube.com/amslandscaping Request a Same Day Estimate! How To Shut Off The Water To Your Landscaping

Shutting Water Off To Landscaping - YouTube

Have you’ve been in a position where your drip system or lawn sprinklers won’t shut off?  Not sure which valve to shut off?  This video will show you how to manually turn the water off to your landscaping without shutting off the water to your home. If you have water that has been running for much longer than the timer is set, it is possible that the valve is stuck on manual run.  This can happen when the timer sent the signal to the solenoid, it was not able to close the diaphragm on the electronic valve.  This is how the water is supposed to shut down with the controller.

The best way to shut your water off to your landscaping without shutting the water off to your house is to shut off the backflow that is just before the valves to the landscaping. The easiest way to find the backflow is to start at the water meter to your house. That usually takes you to the shut off to the whole house, but right before that shut off is usually a bypass for the backflow which feeds the landscaping separate from the house water supply.

Here is a previous blog we have about the backflows and what they do to prevent potable water mixing with non-potable water:

How To Shut-Off and Test Backflow For Phoenix Residents

Once you have located the backflow, we recommend turning the levers perpendicular to the pipe to shut the water off to your landscaping until you can either fix the valve or contact a professional to make this repair.
