Are you a Spotify subscriber but don’t know how to link Spotify to Google Home?

It’s really simple and easy to set-up, I promise.

As some of you may know I am a big Apple fanboy. Most of our devices we use are Apple products but when it comes to streaming, we prefer using Amazon Fire Cube for our TV shows, Amazon prime for movies and Spotify for music.

This can change as Apple has recently announced Apple TV + which will be released later this year and Apple Music continues to get better.

But as of right now we use the Spotify family plan which allows my wife and I to have individual accounts to play our own music.

Plus, Spotify is still considered the undisputed king of on-demand streaming music with a whopping 30 million plus song catalog. On top of that, Spotify adds 20,000 new songs each day, impressive.

With countless subscribers to Spotify it only makes sense to provide a how-to link Spotify to Google Home article.

The First thing you need is a Google Home, second, a Spotify account and third a smartphone or tablet to install Spotify app.

Okay, let’s get to it!

How to link Spotify to Google Home in 2019
  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. In the bottom right corner, Tap account.
  3. Tap Music in the Google Assistant section.

4. Select Spotify.

5. Link your Spotify Account.

6. Log in to Spotify. If you don’t have a Spotify account, you can continue to log in with Facebook or create an account by signing up to Spotify with your email address.

7. Read terms and conditions and tap Agree.

8. Congratulations! You’re now link to Google Home

Which Google Assistant commands can I use with Spotify?

“Hey Google…”

  • “Play Spotify.”
  • “Play my Discover Weekly.”
  • “Play hip-hop music.”
  • “Play ‘Homecoming: The Live Album’ by Beyoncé on Spotify.” (If you don’t say Spotify, Google Assistant will play on Netflix, if you have a Google Chromecast connected to your TV.)
  • “Pause.”
  • “Like this song.”
  • “Skip forward 20 seconds.”
  • “Play the next song.”
  • “What’s playing?”
  • “What’s this album?”

For more basic voice commands to Spotify, click here

Can you play Spotify on the Google Home devices?

Yes. Google Home, Max, Mini and any other Google Assistant devices that support Spotify.

Can I listen to Spotify free on Google Home?

Absolutely, whether if you are using a Spotify premium or free account both will work. Spotify free only plays songs inspired by the song, album or artist you requested stations created by Spotify.

If you would like to sign up to Spotify premium it’s currently $9.99 per month and for the family plan just $14.99 per month for unlimited music for you and up to five people who reside at your same address.

Now you are able to listen to any music you request on your Google Home through Spotify premium. Just simply say “Ok Google, play my fave playlist.” Enjoy!

What are the best home devices that will actually keep you cool this summer? Well, times have changed, it’s not like a few years ago when people mostly used air conditioners to cool down their home.

There are a lot of new options and I’m here to tell you all the best ways to stay cool this summer.

If you are trying to figure out what’s the best ways to keep your smart home cool, then that really depends upon your personal situation.  Do you live in a dry, hot or warm region?

Hopefully, this article will help you make your decision. I will update this post regularly to ensure that you have the latest information.

Now, without any further delays here are the best home devices that will actually keep you cool this summer.

1. Reduce Sunlight with Smart Blinds

On the summer days, when smart blinds are completely closed, you can have the ability to reduce heat gain in rooms by 45 percent according to the US Department of Energy (DOE). They can also reflect direct sunlight onto your home.

Using smart blinds not only control the amount of heat entering your home, but it also helps lower your energy bill since your air conditioner will have to work less.

However, smart blinds are nothing new, as they were mostly seen in 5-star hotels or in the lifestyle of the rich and famous. That’s probably because most smart blinds can cost between $300-500.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be rich and famous. Instead of replacing your existing blinds, you can control it with a smart blind kit. It’s easy to install and works perfectly.

Smart Blind Kit

There are several different brands in the market, but currently here are my top picks, Blind Engine Kit and My SmartBlinds Automation Kit which are both well-respected brands within the smart home community.

Smart Blinds

If you prefer replacing your exciting old blinds to smart blinds it can be a better option for long-term investment.

There are several companies out there that makes smart blinds but the one that is most respected is Lutron. Works well with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit.

The biggest knock on Lutron smart shades is that they aren’t cheap by any stretch.

But if you’re seeking for some affordability, Ikea will be releasing its smart blinds later in 2019, so it might be best to wait until then.

IKEA KADRILJ and FYRTUR Smart Blinds - YouTube

Either option depends on your comfort level but if I had to choose, I would look more into Blind Engine. It works right out of the box without a lot of time wasted installing the product.

If you are interested check out the reviews and current pricing on Amazon.

2. Ditch the Dumb Incandescent Lights for Smart LED Bulbs

Light bulbs generate heat, especially the incandescent ones. While buying the latest technology can cost a penny, choosing the right bulbs can save you money and keep you cool at the same time.

Replacing your incandescent and fluorescent bulbs with smart LED lights can last considerably longer, which will make a difference in cooling your home while saving money on your electric bill.

The Philips Hue collection is the best smart bulb on the market today but for more affordability check out my review on LIFX smart bulbs.

3. Install Smart Ceiling Fans

Yes, even ceiling fans are becoming smart, and this can be a much cheaper price point instead of using an air conditioner. But it’s also recommended that you run your AC and ceiling fan at the same time and this actually works.

I remember my wife, who was my girlfriend at the time used to have both AC and ceiling fan on to cool down the room on those hot summer days. Once the room cools down, she would switch the AC off. But this only worked when she was home, as there was no way to program her ceiling fan to switch on depending on the temperature in the room.

Now, you can do this more efficiently, with the help of smart ceiling fans.

Smart Ceiling fans can be remotely controlled and can be programmed to switch on and off depending on the current temperature and schedules. Smart Ceiling fans can also be linked to your smart thermostats such as using an Ecobee or Nest.

You have two options to transition into a smart ceiling fan. Buy the best smart Wi-Fi ceiling fan on the market today or you can make your old dumb ceiling fan smart by using Bond, a smart ceiling fan controller.

Indoor smart ceiling fans are a great option for cooling down your home as it also creates a decrease in energy use, which will increase in energy savings.

4. Use Smart Plugs for Appliances or Electronics

Another low tech, low-cost solutions is to use a smart plug, and there are several options available that can cost as little as $9.99. Smart plugs are great as they connect to your Wi-Fi and smartphone app, which switches them on and off.

The best solution for a smart plug is to connect to a fan which now can be controlled remotely. You can also use voice commands by speaking to Alexa or the Google Assistant.

Once the smart plug is plugged in the wall outlet, then it controls any device plugged into it. If you are on a budget, this can be a great option for you. Click here for my best recommended smart plugs on the market.

5. Switch from Dumb to Smart AC

In the last couple of years, smart air conditioners have become more popular due to energy savings for most consumers. Smart air conditioners not only less expensive, but it also will make your life easier in general.

But before purchasing an AC you will want to take a few things into consideration.  There are several types of air conditioning setups, such as central AC, window, and wall mounted units which you can buy in any major electronic store such as Best Buy.

Whatever smart air conditioner you choose will depend on your specific needs such as BTU (British thermal unit).

For example, my wife bakes for clients over the summer and due to the heat and having the oven on, can make it very hot in our home. To keep our home cool and prevent cakes from sweating we use an AC that can produce up to 18,000 BTU.

If you need help to understand exactly how many BTU’s you’ll need for your home, Energy Star has put out a guide to help you.

Another option is instead of purchasing a new AC, you can also make your existing AC smart with a smart air conditioner adapter through IR technology.

There are a few smart AC controllers on the market but Ambi Climate appears to be the best and most powerful smart air conditioner controller you can purchase today.

Ambi Climate has several modes, such as comfort, away, temperature and manual. It’s compatible with Alexa and IFTTT and it will auto-adjust your AC based on your personal preferences and what you command it within your smart app.

6. Install a Smart Thermostat

As we get closer to the summer people are starting to look for new ways to beat the heat. One great way to keep cool and save energy is by using a smart home thermostat to control your HVAC system.

There are several different options on the market but two most known is Ecobee and Nest Thermostats as they are highly recommended in reviews, forums and the smart home community.

Before you decide to purchase a Smart Home Thermostats make sure that they work well and get good reviews. Also, make sure that they will integrate with your smart home bridge.

Do you live in an apartment or do you have an entire house to cooldown? Are you planning to use Alexa, Google Home or Siri to control your smart Thermostats?

You want to take these things into consideration when shopping for a smart thermostat as this can be a big investment.

7. Smart Mattresses for Better Cool Sleep

Are you having trouble sleeping in the night because of discomfort due to the summer heat? As we all know getting enough sleep is crucial to our health and day-to-day function.

As we continue to head in the new tech age, we are getting introduced to more smart devices such as smart mattresses.

Smart mattress allows you to adjust your mattress for maximum comfort such as cooling the side of the mattress you sleep on.  One of the many functions a smart mattress can do.

One smart mattress on the market that’s been getting a lot of good reviews is Eight Sleep’s The Pod. It can independently control the temperature of either side which will help your partner who has a different temperature preference than you.

Eight Sleep’s The Pod can connect to Amazon Echo, Google Home, Nest, and Philips Hue.

The only cons of the smart mattress, they can cost a few thousand dollars. YES! They’re very expensive. But in my opinion smart mattress can be a great investment that can change your life and you can’t put a price on that.

Conclusion

While smart home automation has changed the culture and the way we live, it also helps save time, lower our bills and can helps us keep us cool during summer with these smart home devices.

With the summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to pick up these devices that will actually keep you cool this summer.

The following is sponsored by Gosund. All opinions are 100% my own.

Over the course of last year, I have reviewed several smart plugs.

So just recently Gosund asked me to take a look at their Smart plug, I said: “Why not!?”

Gosund seems to have their high points, due to what I’ve seen so far, as the smart plugs get the job done.  So, let’s dig into this smart plug and find out exactly why it’s the number #1 best seller on Amazon

Who is Gosund?

The company was founded in 2007 and is IOS certified which means it meets IOS standards, by demonstrating that the product or service meets the expectations of their customers.

Gosund specialized in IOT AI, smart home product design, production and sales having branches in the United States & Hong Kong.

Gosund has been a professional Smart Home products supplier for world leading companies. This has allowed, Gosund to become a professional brand for Smart home products.

What makes Gosund Smart Plug Different?

First, it’s really affordable, especially compared to many of its competitors. At its minimum price entry point, it allows anyone to start automating their crib. Once you buy one and see it’s working, you become hooked and want to keep buying more.

The app, Smart Life, has a clean interface, making it very easy to use.

Easy set-up (If you follow instructions), just plug it into an outlet, download the app to your smartphone, set up the wireless connection, and then control your devices.

When I first was setting-up the Gosund smart Plug, there were some connecting issues. I had to retry twice as it wasn’t picking up the device.

After reading the instructions again on the app, I realized my Wi-Fi (Only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network) router, mobile phone, and the Gosund smart plug wasn’t close enough to connect. Once I changed the position of the smart plug, my smartphone, and retry set-up, the device was found.

Here is a video from Gosund to help set-up your smart plug.
Gosund Smart Plug Installation Guide & pair with Alexa - YouTube
Gosund Smart Plug Features

Gosund has created a smart outlet plug-in adapter for people who want to add remote control and automation to their existing lamps, fans, or other electrical devices without breaking the bank.

Gosund smart plug gives you full integration with your smartphone, so you can control it anywhere with Wi-Fi enabled remote control, making your life easier and smarter. And it takes it a step further by having features such as,

  • Set timer
  • Share with family members
  • Create a schedule
  • Compatible with IFTTT

All of this in a budget smart plug which blows my mind.

The Gosund smart plug also syncs up with Amazon Alexa and Google Home devices. With voice integration, you don’t have to bring up the app on your phone to switch the devices on and off, you can just use the voice commands and say things like…

“Hey Google, turn of bedroom lamp.”

Or

“Alexa, turn off night lamp.”

WeMo Mini Smart Plug Vs Gosung Smart Plug

To be honest both smart plugs have its strong and weak points. But as some of you may know, I am a huge fan of WeMo Mini smart plugs

WeMo

Why? It’s well small block design, which allows you to fit two WeMo Minis into adjacent outlets.

The WeMo Mini smart plug offers some great features such as power monitoring, away modes or Apple HomeKit compatibility.

But, the cons for WeMo, can be its usability, it crashes, and it’s difficult to set-up as some users have complained from top critical reviews.

Gosund

After spending several hours with Gosung Smart plug, it has been working very well but for my wife Melissa, there seems to be a problem when using voice commands. So, it’s a hit or miss regarding voice control.

The smart plug is not designed to fit more than one into the adjacent outlet.

Also, the Gosund Smart Plug doesn’t include more advanced features such as power monitoring, away modes and it’s not compatible with Apple Siri or HomeKit.

So, what can you expect from this budget smart plug? It still delivers basic smart task and also works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Verdict

In my opinion, both are great smart plugs but WeMo is still the best when it comes to an overall package. WeMo is compatibility with IFTTT, Google Assistant, Siri, Apple HomeKit and Amazon’s Alexa. Making it one of the most well-connected smart plugs you can buy but at a premium price.

Basic Smart Plug with Powerful Features

While Gosund smart plug delivers the same basic features with an entry price less than $10, that might be all you need.

For example, the one features we would use is create a schedule to turn the lights on at sunrise and turn off, at sunset which would also give an impression you are home when traveling.

If you are a Google Home or Amazon Alexa user, you can simply use commands to shut the lights on and off.

And last, the ability to remote control things outside of your home which might be the most powerful feature of all. That ability makes your home safer, allows you to save time and most importantly, allows you to save money.

Final Thoughts

Once I have a chance to really test this out over the course of the next few months, I’ll be able to add more to this review.

From what I have seen thus far it’s a rather impressive smart plug device that will add value to your smart home and is definitely worth trying out.

Especially at its low price point than some of the other smart plugs that we’ve seen in the past. It’s definitely worth trying. If you are interested in buying one you can find the latest price on Amazon.

As some of you may know, I love YouTube. I’ve been watching tech YouTube channels since 2008 when I was searching for Apple Mac Pro reviews. This is before You Tubers was a thing, now most of the YouTube channels I watched years ago such as UrAvgConsumer are now YouTube celebrities. They went from unboxing in their Livingroom, to now, full blown studios, which is amazing!

Till this day, my wife asked me why don’t you start your own YouTube channel? To be honest, I’m shy in front of the camera, so there is some fear. But also, YouTube has become very competitive in 2019.

Back in 2008, you can get away with bad quality videos but today, it’s a combination of delivering high-quality video (4K), creating great content, engagement, branding and keeping up with the latest reviews.

This is why, I put together the best smart home tech YouTube Channels You Should Watch in 2019. Some of the channels have been around for a couple of years, some are just starting out, but both show the combination as I mention above to qualify as a good smart home tech YouTube Channel.

So, without any further delays,

Best Smart Home Tech YouTube Channels You Should Watch In 2019   Smart Home Life

When I first begin to watch smart home tech on YouTube, Smart Home Life was one of the first to pop up. Joe Dugandzic, the founder of Smarter Home Life, has been working with home automation technology for over 25 years. So, you can say he knows a thing or two about smart home tech.

Located in the Pheonix area, Joe decided to leave IT and web development career in 2015 to focus on creative work and online content creation.

Joe started his YouTube page back on February 20, 2014, and was able to grow his subscribers to over 33,000 subscribers and views to 5,560,436 as of March 2019.

Smarter Home Life is your destination for home automation and LED lighting product reviews, industry news, how-to content, Q&As with the audience, and much more. To find more on home automation check out Smart Home Life YouTube page

Automate Your Life

Automate Your Life was a page I found scrolling through YouTube in search of home automation ideas. The branding colors in the videos caught my attention and from there I dug a little deeper into Automate Your Life YouTube page

Brain Read is the founder and CEO of Automate Your Life and his goal is to tackle everything from Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Homekit, and everything in between. Brain is also driven such as myself to make people’s lives easier through smart home technology.

4 Ways People Can Hack into Your August Smart Lock

The August Smart Lock was released a couple of years ago, and since then there have been no reported hacks into the August Smart Lock that I have been able to find, but Jmaxxz a software engineer, security expert, and white-hat hacker showed a demo presentation of August Smart Locks vulnerabilities of a break-in.

Smart locks are still quite new and are vulnerable to cyber and physical hackers. I found that there were several ways to hack into a smart lock such as the August Smart Lock. These ways include:

1. Signal Interception

Most smart locks are compatible with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi which the signals are wireless. Hackers can use those signals to get the password.

2. Password Cracking

Most people have weak passwords which allow hackers to tempered with and easily have control of your smart lock. I recommend LastPass to generate a strong password that will create long, randomized passwords to protect against hacking.

3. Attacks by Malware

Since smart lock are connected to the internet it is possible to be attacked by Malware.

4. Audio Transducer (Using Voice to Hack A Smart Lock)

For the last five years, Amazon’s smart assistant Alexa has been there to answer our questions, play our favorite songs, read our schedule, tell us the news and dim our lights upon request. Don’t get me wrong, this has been great, but let’s face it, in order for this to work, Alexa is always listening for the magic wake words which means you ‘re offering up all sorts of personal data to Amazon.

Fortunately, you can delete your Amazon Alexa voice history with a few simple steps.

I know building a smart home can be exciting but you also want to manage and guard your personal data as well.

To delete your Amazon Alexa voice history, go to your Alexa App, tap settings > Alexa Account > Alexa Privacy. In the Alexa privacy page, you can, review transcripts, listen to voice recordings and delete voice history one by one or all at once.

Why does Alexa save Voice History?

According to Amazon, “We keep the voice recordings associated with your account to improve the accuracy of the results provided to you and to improve our services. If you delete these recordings, it may degrade your experience using voice features.”

To avoid the device from listening, you can mute the microphone, but this also turns off the ability to send commands which defeats the purpose.

How to Delete Your Voice Data History from Amazon Alexa?

If you want to delete your history the process is pretty simple, if you don’t want Amazon Alexa to keep them for whatever reason. This can all be done from the Alexa app and here is how to find and delete voice history data,

The First step is to open the Amazon Alexa app. Once you are in the app, open the menu on the left-hand side > tap setting at the bottom of the list.

Second Step, tap on Alexa Account > Tap history. This will show the history of voice interactions which includes all recordings that you can playback.

Third Step if you want to delete a specific recording, tap the conversation you want to delete and > Tap Delete Voice Recording

Can I delete Alexa History entirely?

To delete the entire history form website, go to Alexa Privacy, click review voice history.

Click > Delete all recordings for today, yesterday, this week, this month, all history (Entire History) or custom. I choose yesterday.

Click > Yes to Delete all recordings for date range you choose.

We will assume no since Amazon does confirm whether your data history is clear in the Amazon Alexa policy.

That being said Amazon Alexa can still be invading your privacyso pay close attention to your data. Accessing your data allows companies such as Amazon to use your data for advertising and other commercial purposes.

Can Other People Access/Delete my Alexa History?

Yes, it’s possible if you don’t lock your smartphone or share your Amazon password with anyone that person will also have access to your Alexa history.

The best option is to delete all your history and keep your password safe from Cybercriminals. A weak and reused password is a big problem online. The dark web is real and as the smart tech community continues to grow, you will hear about more hacks and data breach more frequently.

Passwords are the keys to your entire digital life, you want to keep them safely secure. To avoid any cyber hacks from cybercriminals, we used LastPass.

Last Pass is an online password manager that keeps our smart gadgets and online sites such as Amazon secure and hidden. It’s free, easy to use and the most preferred password manager by top brands and businesses online.

Conclusion

Amazon claims they have resolved many of the concerns regarding your data already. However, according to reports, it’s hard not to wonder if this is true. The chances of your data history from Alexa being hacked, stolen or misused by Amazon for their own financial gains is totally possible.

All in all, there are always ways for improvement and to help keep your human data safe and secure without you worrying about deleting your Alexa history.

Until then, continue to delete, keep your data safe and have fun with Alexa.
